Fashion show!

Greetings from Cathy... Hello and welcome to our winter edition of Bob’s Banter. The chilly mornings and shorter days are upon us, however, at Bob Scott we are all very lucky to live and work in such a warm and cosy environment. It’s been a busy time at the village, especially for independent residents activities coordinator Terri Taylor and our fantastic Bob Scott knitting group. As you will see in this issue, the group managed to create the incredible Field of Poppies mural to commemorate Anzac Day. Well done ladies! This will be a treasure for the village for many years to come. On another note, we have had a second fashion show. This time our supermodels strutted their stuff in outfits from Ballentynes Fashion Central in Lower Hutt. They all looked stunning!

We have some exciting events coming up, including our own World of Wearable Arts showcase with costumes made by residents, as well as the mid-winter solstice celebrations and an inter-village quiz afternoon. Until next time, take care, stay warm and I look forward to seeing you around the village. Kind regards,

Cathy Hiku Village Manager

A mural for the fallen To commemorate Anzac Day this year, Terri Taylor, our independent activities coordinator, came up with the idea to knit a poppy mural. She wanted to make a field of poppies with hill in the background.

Crooners & Swooners In early July, crooner James Tait-Jamieson will visit the village for the not to be missed concert Crooners & Swooners. James will perform hit classics from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Nat King Cole, Sammy Davis Jr and many more. So be sure to book your seat!

Resident Marea Wright agreed to help, and over a few months contributed two boxes of knitted poppies of various sizes in red and black wool, while Terri started on knitting the hills and the sky. Other residents soon joined in and the project began to grow over the few weeks.

Look forward to seeing you there,

Once the knitting was finished the knitted background was attached to a backdrop made out of old caregiver uniforms. The poppies were then sewn on individually.

We are really proud of Terri, Marea, the knitting group and everyone else who helped to make this spectacular piece of art! For Anzac Day, Lt Col Ken Collard spoke to the residents, Rory O’Connor read the Ode and Kackie Jansen read the poem; Flanders Fields. Top: Terri and Marea with the finished mural. Right: Lt Col. Resident Profile

Meet Betty

New Zealand at the age of 28. Initially my plan was to stay for two years, but 63 years later I am still here! I met my future husband on the Captain Cook. My husband didn’t know where he was going to be based so we thought that we wouldn’t be seeing each other again. But, as luck would have it, he was based in Wellington near me! We were married two years later in the presence of our New Zealand friends as our families were still back in England. We settled in Christchurch and had two children, Elaine and Geoffrey. After 12 years living in Christchurch we moved to Timaru. My family spent many wonderful holidays in our beloved campervan. Our favourite place to visit was Whakatane, where we eventually retired.

I turned 90 years young last l year and am very proud to reach such an age!

Hello, my name is Betty Suttron. I live in a serviced apartment here at Bob Scott. I turned 90 years young last year and am very proud to reach such an age! I was born in London and lived and worked there until 1955 when I decided to come to

I sadly lost my husband but I stayed on in Whakatane until I decided to move to Bob Scott to be closer to my daughter and grandchild who live in Upper Hutt. I like to keep active and have a mobility scooter to get me down to the local shops. I love living at Bob Scott and have lots of companions at hand. The activities are great, especially musical housie!

Mothers and babies

Craft beer afternoon

Our village has been fortunate to have a Mothers & Babies group regularly visit our hospital residents. On this occasion, we welcomed 15 mothers and their babies! The residents loved talking to the mothers, and cradling and cuddling the wee ones. These visits bring a lot of joy and laughter. We can’t wait for the next visit.

We had an exciting trip to the Kereru brewery in Upper Hutt with our Men’s Club. On arrival, we were met by one of the owners who told us all about the history of the brewery and the process of brewing beer. It wouldn’t be a proper outing without also tasting the beer!

Introducing Tysson

Bob Scott has been host to quite a few fashion shows with our independent residents modelling on the day. Our first show, showcased clothing from Blackpepper, and this time round we showcased clothing from Ballentynes Fashion Central.

I have worked in the resthome, hospital and dementia care units. My first job as a caregiver was in a small dementia unit, and I learned many valuable skills from this role.

Six gorgeous models meandered around the audience and at the end of the show, residents had the chance to view and purchase their favourite outfits!

Recently, I won the kindness award, an accolade I am proud to have received.

I have always been passionate about caring for older people and I strive to deliver the best care possible. My skills have also seen me travel the country.

I joined Bob Scott in 2016 and since then, my personal growth has been substantial, the training is ongoing and hugely beneficial. Recently, I won the kindness award, an accolade I am proud to have received. I married my soulmate in January, which was one of the happiest days of my life. My life revolves around my family which is not limited to just my immediate family, but my extended Ryman family too!

Fine dining with a twist Many of our fine dining evenings throughout the year have a theme, and the theme for March was a masquerade dinner. Blue table runners decorated the tables while matching light blue candles flickered, creating a stunning atmosphere. Our kitchen team outdid themselves with a sumptuous dinner of red pepper terrines, succulent fillet steak with piped potatoes and roasted vegetables. Of course, the most divine chocolate dessert with Chantilly cream was devoured by all. Like there often is at Bob Scott, we had a humorous side to the evening with some residents wearing rather unusual but fun masks to show they’re always game for a laugh! The whole evening was an absolute delight.
