Charles’s Chapters

Greetings from Louise... Hello and welcome to the autumn edition of Charles’s Chapters. We have had a spectacular summer and hope to have a mild autumn too. I want to thank the grounds team for their hard work to keep our gardens looking fantastic throughout summer. There have been a few changes at the village; we said a fond farewell to our clinical manager, Michelle Day, who relocated to Whitianga and welcomed Lucy Kawana as our new clinical manager. Lucy comes from the Kapiti coast and brings with her a wealth of knowledge and experience as she previously worked at Canterbury DHB. Welcome to the team, Lucy!

We also had a busy start to the year with our annual Children’s Party and village BBQ's. While all this will be a hard act to follow, the next few months will also be filled with abundance of activities to enjoy! Please remember that my door is always open if you have a query. Kind regards,

Louise Trilloe Village Manager

Great Gatsby Recently our village was transformed into an Art Deco extravaganza for a Great Gatsby themed ball to celebrate Christmas. Our residents dressed up in suits and apper dresses, danced to the band and feasted on delicious delicacies from our kitchen team. It certainly was a night to remember!

<generic recipe> Bob Scott bowlers take on Melbourne While most of us were sleeping off our Christmas feasts on Boxing Day, four residents from Bob Scott Retirement Village were heading to Melbourne. The winners of the Ryman lower North Island regional bowls tournament, Arie Molenaar, Shirley Wilson, Ron Scott and Reta Morris, were eager to take on Australian bowlers in the Glen Waverley Bowls Carnival. “The atmosphere was brilliant. There was a lot of interest in us and people asking how we were doing,” Arie says. The team also enjoyed their visit to Ryman’s first Melbourne village, the Weary Dunlop Retirement Village, where they had a tour and morning tea with the residents.

They all agree that it is the best thing to have a bowling green in a village as it brings people together.

They all give a very big thank you to Ryman and Denise Thompson, Ryman community and relations team leader, and Russ Nicholls, from the Glen Waverley Bowls Club.

Cashin Scholarship Winner 2018 Emma Glasson is all set to pursue her dream career after winning the $5,000 Cashin Scholarship. The 18-year-old from Invercargill has started her first year studying for a Bachelor of Commerce and she says the scholarship has eased the pressure on her family. Emma’s mum Deanna is a senior caregiver at Rowena Jackson Retirement Village in Invercargill and started there in 2012 after the family moved south from Christchurch. Emma says the earthquakes were tough on the family. “The earthquakes took a toll on us all and mum and dad decided that Invercargill would be a good place to move to.’’ Emma is the seventh winner of the scholarship established in honour of

Ryman director Mike Cashin. Blair Cashin, Mike’s son, said Emma was a deserving winner. “We were delighted to support Emma’s ambitions to study accountancy. She’s part of a family whose lives were disrupted by the earthquakes but she is a determined character who has done well at school through her hard work.’’ The scholarship is open to all Ryman staff and their families.

Ryman Healthcare is proud to be partnering with Child Cancer Foundation in the Haier Big Hoot. From 3 March till 6 May, 47 owl sculptures decorated by New Zealand and international artists will be displayed across Auckland. One of these owls has been sponsored by Ryman Healthcare. There will also be 60 owlets mostly decorated by children on display. Auckland sculptor Jeff Thomson has created the Ryman owl, which has landed at a location in Birkenhead. Jeff’s Tin Owl is made from corrugated iron and is quite striking against the other painted fibreglass owls. If you live, or find yourself in Auckland, grab some friends and go on a wander around the beautiful city and see if you can find Ryman’s Tin Owl! Introducing Cristy Pagaduan Hello, my name is Cristy Pagaduan. It’s been four years since I immigrated to New Zealand from the Philippines! I started working as a roaming nurse for Ryman and it was really a good opportunity to see new places of this picturesque country. I was assigned to three different villages before settling at Charles Fleming. I love Waikanae, and am happy to call it home. Before moving to New Zealand, I was involved in volunteering for a hospital in my home town, then eventually worked as medical-surgical nurse. It was during this time that I met my husband, Julius, who is also a registered nurse. Julius now works at Wellington Hospital.

Working in aged care is new to me, as this is not common in my country. With the help and support of the village staff, I adjusted well into my new job. Looking after the elderly is challenging but fulfilling. I like working at the village as I feel we treat the residents as family, rather than patients. The staff at Charles Fleming nitely St Patrick's Daydefi was a lotwork of together asfun a team and a family. I love at Edmund Hillary with feeling likegreen I make a difference every outfi ts, green food, time I come to work! and of course, Guinness!

teel S is v a Meet M Hello everyone, my name ame is Mavis Steel and I live in the resthome here at Charles Fleming. I was delighted when asked to give a profile of myself! I took up residence in Charles Fleming early November 2017. The move was required as I no longer had family support in the Napier region where I had lived from 1958. Sadly, my late husband Ronald passed away a few years back while living

in Napier, and I am very grateful to my friends for being so supportive during that time. It was a big decision to move, but I knew it was the best thing for myself and my family. With the positive attitude that I have always had I quickly realised it would be the best step forward. I have always been a very social person and find myself easily entertained here at Charles Fleming. There are many activities on offer throughout all areas of the village. I play bridge with the townhouse residents once a week, then I go out into the community to play at the local Waikanae Bridge club. I give thanks to the staff as I need to be the first stop for lunch on those days! They are always looking out for me. Previously, I was a qualified nurse, working as a nursing supervisor. I was fortunate enough to work all over the world. Though I still miss my friends in Napier, I am enjoying the new friendships I am making and can assure you all that I am very happy here in Waikanae!

Our annual Children’s Party was a roaring success with 80 children attending! The Wellington theatre company, Little Dog Barking, entertained the crowd with their puppeteers, and even the parents and grandparents joined in the fun. The face painting proved to be popular, as did the band who managed to get most people up on the dance floor. The exhausted, but happy children, were farewelled with a small gift. Thank you for spending the spectacular day with us! We are already looking forward to planning our next one.
