Brass band performance
Greetings from Louise... Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Charles’s Chapters. It’s been a long winter, so we are very happy to welcome back the warmer months! The gardeners were very busy transforming our gardens and the cherry blossom trees were certainly a delight to see. The village has been very busy over the last few months. During International Month in July our staff put together a concert to celebrate the Filipino culture. In August we celebrated Wellness Month, which included a healthy breakfast for our residents and staff. We also celebrated Father’s Day with entertainment in September. October brought our wearable arts showcase and Oktoberfest celebrations.
We continue to hold raffles to fundraise for this year’s nominated charity – the Stroke Foundation NZ. We have already raised over $2,500, and our village will continue to raise as much as we can for this worthy cause. Remember, if you have any queries or would like to find out more about village life here, please do not hesitate to pop in and have a chat or give me a call. Kind regards,
Louise Trilloe Village Manager

Movie magic During September our village centre was transformed for the Movie Magic Party! Some independent residents and staff dressed up as their favourite actor or character, while others wore their very best for the night. There were some spectacular costumes including pirates, a Blues Brother, Holly Golightly, Eliza Doolittle, Rita Hayworth, and Cleopatra. Resident Alison Somers was dressed in fifty shades of grey – very clever! Geoff from Double Blend, provided music together with his niece, Ainslie Allen. The crowd loved with Ainslie’s Elvis renditions, and the dancing didn’t stop until the band retired for the evening. Lots of tired but happy feet! A truly red-carpet evening for Charles Fleming. If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

also pleased to go one better than last year. “We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’
Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.
Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.
Steve came second in last year’s competition.
Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.” Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was

myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Officer Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care
system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.
“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

Upon our return to New Zealand that same year, I retired from the Defence Force and subsequently became the CEO of the Liquor Advisory Council, followed by being a political and economic advisor to the Japanese Embassy before retiring officially. Brasso Brass Band
Upcoming events
We recently welcomed the local Kapiti Coast Brass Band back to perform at the village. The 13-piece brass band, led by the talented David Miller, entertained several residents for a wonderful afternoon of music. The programme included a wide variety of musical styles with some fantastic pieces such as Hallelujah and How Deep is Your Love. Everybody had a wonderful afternoon and we look forward to next year when they will entertain us once again! Above: The band in action.
