Hello and welcome to the latest edition of engaged! In this issue we look at the advantages of remaining active in both body and mind. After all, our frames, despite any age-related failings, are designed to move and the brain is designed to think and create. There are many advantages to your general health and wellbeing that come from staying on the front foot both in terms of physical and mental exercises.

One other important thing is the enjoyment you can have. Ryman’s Triple A programmes are designed to bring a smile. It’s always a pleasure to walk through our villages and see the positivity oozing in one of our regular exercise sessions. Even while we are currently at a distance, we will continue to run Triple A via zoom. Of course, everyone deserves a sleep-in or a day of real relaxation on occasion. But on other days set yourself a challenge. Even if you set small goals, the longer-term gains will be incredible. Have fun!

Whether those tasks are puzzles, a sudoku each day, or some art and craft work, you will feel better for it. From even moderate exercise you will have stronger muscles and bones, and better posture and balance and generally more energy.

Let’s score a goal! When it comes to setting goals, we often think to ourselves: ‘well that is something I can do tomorrow’.

paperwork – these are all goals that we either enjoy or need to achieve to meet family and financial commitments.

But there are huge advantages to having some strong ideas about what you want from your life. Plans can lead to results and we hopefully can end up living the very best of lives.

Sometimes we need to look past these immediate goals, so we can create the broader framework in which we want to live. When thinking of families and friends we also need to be flexible.

Goals can prove pivotal. These can be long-term and others can be very much set on a weekly or even daily basis.

Of course our grandest goals, or even relatively simple ones are not always achievable. Consider what might be the setbacks you will face and if you will be overly disappointed if the plan does not work. In terms of overcoming challenges, try to think of solutions before any roadblocks happen. Front footing in terms of conversations and decisions will help us reach a point where we can see if the goal is achievable or if we have to take a step in a different direction.

For example, you can create two-year plans around holiday events and meet ups for you and your family. You can set aspirational targets for better health and wellbeing. But we don’t want to take all the fun out of retirement living and improvisation. So don’t be afraid of leaving some things to chance. Talking to a new resident, taking the time to look up old friends or even taking on a new challenge within the village or wider community can reward you. But back to our goal setting. We should think first about the many goals we are already setting ourselves daily, maybe without even thinking too much about them. Whether it is reading the newspaper, folding the laundry, doing house chores or sorting through

Goals can be made up of mini goals – giving yourself milestones along the way to reaching a bigger goal. Just writing down some of your priorities and what you want to see at the end of a plan can provide a boost to both your confidence and feeling of wellbeing about a project. Remember to reward yourself. Be it a short goal or working through to achieving a much longer-term target, its important to celebrate the wins.

Triple A Exercises SH OU L D E R ROL LS

SIDE TURNS

1. Start standing with feet at shoulder width apart with soft knees.

1. Sitting nice and tall, feet placed hip width apart on the floor.

2. While you inhale, bring your shoulders up as high as you can towards your ears.

2. Clasp hands together in front of your midline, making sure to tuck your arms in towards your ribcage.

3. Once you have brought your shoulders as high as possibly, roll your shoulder back as you exhale. 4. This will allow you to open your chest. 5. Repeat 8-10 times, focusing on taking your time throughout the movement.

1. Sit tall in a straight back chair, roll shoulder back to open chest. Hold arms out in front of your body, shoulder height with palms facing inwards. 2. Anchor your shoulders blades against the chair, inhale and open your arms out to the sides.

3. Rotate your torso including clasped hands to the right. Hold your position and gaze for 3 counts. Return to forward facing and alternate to the left. 4. Repeat 4-6 times to each side.

Lift your right knee up, towards your right shoulder and extend the right leg to the front (imagine kicking a ball) then return the right leg to knee lift position. 3.
