Greetings from Durham... Hello, and a warm welcome to the autumn edition of Ernest’s Editorial. It has been a busy start to the year as we completed exterior upgrades on our care centre and are now busy updating the main building with a paint refresh and balcony repairs. Thank you for your patience during this time.
Bob Scott, in Wellington. Jane, our receptionist has been promoted to assistant manager here. Janine Snape, our clinical manager, has also accepted a promotion with Ryman as project clinical manager and will be based in Auckland. We wish them well! So far, this year we have held some fun events including our Children’s Party and village BBQ. There are many more activities coming up so please keep an eye on your calendars for these wonderful events.
We rolled out the myRyman care application which means that we are now paperless! With a tablet in every care resident’s room, their information is always on hand at the touch of a button. This will allow staff to spend more time with residents.
Kind regards,
I want to congratulate Cathy Hiku, Jane Hockey and Janine Snape. Cathy, our assistant manager, has been promoted to village manager at our sister village,

We invited the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of our residents and staff to the village for our annual Children’s Party. Our theme this year was 'Welcome to the Jungle' and we certainly embraced it with our staff dressing up as explorers! We had activities for the children to engage in and the jungle course seemed to be the most popular. We also had catch-thepiranhas, face painting, bouncy castles and animal balloons, which Zoe made. It was a fantastic day and we can’t wait to plan our next one.

About! Nothing says summer like a trip to the beach. A group of residents decided that would be the perfect way to spend the day. The walk on the beach was very relaxing and everyone took a moment to appreciate the scenic surroundings. Afterwards, we went to the local cafe for a cuppa before returning to the village.

<generic recipe> Bob Scott bowlers take on Melbourne While most of us were sleeping off our Christmas feasts on Boxing Day, four residents from Bob Scott Retirement Village were heading to Melbourne. The winners of the Ryman lower North Island regional bowls tournament, Arie Molenaar, Shirley Wilson, Ron Scott and Reta Morris, were eager to take on Australian bowlers in the Glen Waverley Bowls Carnival. “The atmosphere was brilliant. There was a lot of interest in us and people asking how we were doing,” Arie says. The team also enjoyed their visit to Ryman’s first Melbourne village, the Weary Dunlop Retirement Village, where they had a tour and morning tea with the residents.

They all agree that it is the best thing to have a bowling green in a village as it brings people together.
They all give a very big thank you to Ryman and Denise Thompson, Ryman community and relations team leader, and Russ Nicholls, from the Glen Waverley Bowls Club.

Cashin Scholarship Winner 2018 Emma Glasson is all set to pursue her dream career after winning the $5,000 Cashin Scholarship. The 18-year-old from Invercargill has started her first year studying for a Bachelor of Commerce and she says the scholarship has eased the pressure on her family. Emma’s mum Deanna is a senior caregiver at Rowena Jackson Retirement Village in Invercargill and started there in 2012 after the family moved south from Christchurch. Emma says the earthquakes were tough on the family. “The earthquakes took a toll on us all and mum and dad decided that Invercargill would be a good place to move to.’’ Emma is the seventh winner of the scholarship established in honour of
Ryman director Mike Cashin. Blair Cashin, Mike’s son, said Emma was a deserving winner. “We were delighted to support Emma’s ambitions to study accountancy. She’s part of a family whose lives were disrupted by the earthquakes but she is a determined character who has done well at school through her hard work.’’ The scholarship is open to all Ryman staff and their families.

Ryman Healthcare is proud to be partnering with Child Cancer Foundation in the Haier Big Hoot. From 3 March till 6 May, 47 owl sculptures decorated by New Zealand and international artists will be displayed across Auckland. One of these owls has been sponsored by Ryman Healthcare. There will also be 60 owlets mostly decorated by children on display. Auckland sculptor Jeff Thomson has created the Ryman owl, which has landed at a location in Birkenhead. Jeff’s Tin Owl is made from corrugated iron and is quite striking against the other painted fibreglass owls. If you live, or find yourself in Auckland, grab some friends and go on a wander around the beautiful city and see if you can find Ryman’s Tin Owl! on a bitterly cold southerly day in No November. We moved back to Burnham Ca Camp, into a larger house as we now w welcomed a daughter and another son in into our family.
ire a g N & l l i B Meet
So Soon we were moving again, this time to Lin Linton Camp. After this, we were back ag again at Burnham as Bill was to leave with th the replacement troops for Malaysia.
Hello, our names are Bill and Ngaire Morgan. We were both born, educated and married in Nelson.
Th This tour was very different from the firrst, Bill was the Regimental Sergeant Major (RSM) and our home was in a huge military base that housed English, Scottish, Ghurkas, Australian and New Zealand soldiers. During this time, Bill trained for six-months at a time in a jungle camp in Borneo, where troops were deployed during the Indonesian Confrontation.
When we got married, Bill was working on the survey team at the Ministry of Works and Ngaire was a student radiographer at Nelson Hospital. Ngaire worked with Dr Dore, the first radiologist in Nelson, and his encouragement made it possible for Ngaire to sit for a UK qualification in which she was successful.
On our return to New Zealand, Bill was commissioned and appointed as Accounting Officer Burnham Camp, then Investigating Officer Southern Region, and finally Area Commander NMWC at Nelson. To our great pleasure Ngaire was invited to go back to radiography at Nelson Hospital X Ray Department.
We lived in Burnham Camp, and with compulsory training, the camp was a very busy place. By the time Bill was posted to the Army School of Infantry in Waiouru, we were proud parents of two sons. While we had a very comfortable home in Waiouru, it was a cold and bleak place. The opportunity for a posting to Malaysia arrived after four years so Bill took it.
In two decades, many changes, much progress and a super team gave Ngaire plenty of help and even A&E was interesting!
After some months our family were fortunate to have had the chance to join him, we lived in lpoh, a Chinese tin mining city.
We finally moved into the Ernest Rutherford Village in March of last year. After a life of so many challenges it has been a real holiday, the comfort and security of our Ryman home has made us feel very welcomed, and we have settled happily into our ''final posting."
We came back to New Zealand after a two-year tour and arrived in Christchurch
After leaving the Army, Nelson RSA invited Bill to be the veterans representative at Veterans Affairs, which he found very satisfying.
