Introducing Jill
Meet Sandy and Colin
Music week
Greetings from Jill... Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Evelyn’s Portraits. It is with great pleasure that I write my very first manager’s column. My initial weeks at the village have been most enjoyable and I have loved meeting many of you. I feel privileged to be your village manager and to work with an amazing team of staff. It has been lovely to see the spring flowers appearing and to experience some warmer weather. It might be time to dust off the walking shoes and get out in the fresh air! I’ll see you on my walks around the village. We have been very busy over the last few months with some fantastic events. Among these were
Wellness Month, International Month, Father’s Day and many more. A big thank you to the activities team for their hard work. In the run-up to Christmas we are looking forward to the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of The Nutcracker as well as all our Christmas functions! My door is always open if you have any queries. Kind regards,
Jill Clark Village Manager
Art Showcase It was a wonderful weekend full of art at our annual Art Showcase. The village, in association with the Hibiscus Coast Artist Group, displayed artwork from the talented group of artists who wowed everyone. Residents, their families, staff and the public enjoyed speaking to the artists and purchasing some of the artwork. A portion of the proceeds went to this years charity - The Stroke Foundation. Introducing Jill Being Village Manager at Evelyn Page marks a new learning curve for Jill Clark, but the former teacher loves learning. During her 35 years working in the education sector, Jill has amassed a string of qualifications herself and is just finishing off her Masters of Advanced Leadership Practice. Now she is applying that knowledge and experience into a completely different setting. “I love coming to work because every day is different. You don’t know what the challenges are when you walk through the door.” Having been a competitive bodybuilder for 10 years proves that Jill likes a challenge. However, the main one facing her now is how to grow the Orewa village’s already impressive reputation. With Evelyn Page recently taking out the prize for Ryman Healthcare’s village of the year, Jill sees only positives and says it’s a good time to come in. “Coming in after winning village of the year – no pressure!” she laughs. “But whilst we have reached a high standard and need to maintain
that, we can always aim higher because I’m sure there’s more to be done.” Jill, who lives in Browns Bay, said she instantly got a great feel for the place when she stepped through the doors. “I thought straight away ‘I really want to work here’ and after first talking to Paul [Sutton, Regional Manager], Barb [Reynen-Rose, Chief Operations Officer] and then Gordon [MacLeod, Chief Executive], I was impressed with the Ryman philosophy.” Jill says there was plenty of interaction on her first day when a large proportion of the village’s 526 residents attended an afternoon tea specially laid on to welcome her. “It was a really big turn out. I think they were curious as to who this new person was.” Now, she is looking forward to the fun of getting to know them all and continuing the efforts that have made the village such a great place to live and work. “It’s all about working hard for the Ryman cause and I’m fine with that,” she smiles.

If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.
also pleased to go one better than last year. “We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’
Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.
Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.
Steve came second in last year’s competition.
Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.” Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was

myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Office Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care
system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.
“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

Resident Profile
Meet Sandy and Colin
Sandy was born in Nelson in 1946. Her parents were in the Air Force and the family moved to several bases in both New Zealand and Singapore when she was a child. Sandy followed her parent’s footsteps and forged a career in the Air Force. Sandy and Colin met in the mid-1980s after both their first marriages had broken down. The pair hit it off and were soon married. The couple decided on an early semi-retirement and moved to the sunny seaside town of Noosa, Australia where they managed holiday apartments. There, they made fantastic friends, started playing tennis and learned how to play bridge. Sandy and Colin then embarked on an extensive tour overseas seeing many countries in Europe and North America.
We are now enjoying life at Evelyn Page, meeting new people and sharing great meals. s. Sandy and Colin Regan are the new kids on the block, having moved into their apartment at Evelyn Page in July. Colin was born in Wales in 1935, and in 1950 immigrated to New Zealand with his family. After finishing secondary school, he completed his MA in Geography at the University of Auckland before becoming a teacher.
In 2012, the couple finally wound their way back to New Zealand and settled in Orewa close to their children and grandchildren in Auckland. One family member had the temerity to move to the Sun Valley in Idaho! The couple have settled into the village really well and have already made a lot of new friends. They have found the friendships with both staff and residents welcoming and reassuring.
Midwinter solstice In June, we held a delicious breakfast to celebrate the midwinter solstice as well as helping contribute to two great causes - the New Zealand Breast Cancer Society and Prostate Cancer New Zealand. The kitchen team worked hard to create a delicious feast and
had great success with the residents complimenting the food. The proceeds of the breakfast were split equally to support both organisations. Pictured: Resident Carole Wilson enjoyed the festivities.

Sensational senses
Diversional therapy
The special care residents loved playing Guess What’s in the Bag. There was much laughter while each blindfolded resident tried to guess what the object was that they pulled out of the bag. A great way to use your sense of touch!
Hospital residents embraced Wellness Month by making homemade purple playdough. We added some lavender oil to the mixture and the entire lounge smelled like a lavender field afterwards.

Elvis is in the house Elvis impersonator Brendon Chase wowed both residents and staff with his hip-jiggling renditions of the King’s greatest hits on Friday. The ladies swooned and the gents turned up their collars as Elvis turned his attentions to various individuals in the 100-plus crowd filling out the village centre. New manager Jill Clark led the charge in getting everyone up and dancing when ‘Shake, Rattle and Roll’ came on! Brendon sang a great range of tunes, from the rockier numbers to the ballads, including renditions of ‘My Way’ and ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water’. Elvis-fan Ann Waddell had made sure to get a position right at the front and was wowed by the performance. “It was brilliant,” she said. “Listening to him sing all those songs took me right back to my youth.”

Music week During Wellness Month we celebrated a week of music. The Whangaparaoa Rock ‘n’ Roll club were invited to the village to the delight of our residents. The club not only danced for the residents they also shared a bit of their history and the culture of rock ‘n’ roll. The club has been operating for over 20 years on the Hibiscus Coast and runs lessons from beginner to advanced. After their performance the dancers then invited the residents to try out their moves on the dancefloor!
