Meet Ian and Kristeen
Greetings from Lynn... Hello and welcome to my last Evelyn’s Portraits. After seven years in the village, I am moving to a new role within Ryman, but I am confident that I am leaving you in the hands of a well-established team with a great can-do attitude. I thank you all for your kind wishes and I look forward to watching Evelyn Page continue to shine. With winter upon us, the wild weather makes us really appreciate the warmth and security of the village. It’s also great to know that we now have a permanent generator for our village and care centre for any unexpected power cuts! Over the last few months we have had a lot of events and activities in the village with the Anzac Day service being very moving this year.
We are looking forward to many more activities, including the winter solstice. In the care centre, our myRyman care tablets are now installed and we look forward to working with this new system, enabling staff to spend more time with residents! Thank you once again for making my time in the village so much fun and so rewarding. We will update you on the appointment of a new village manager. Kind regards,
Lynn Charlton Village Manager
Orewa Boulevard Arts Fiesta I love spending time at our local clubs, I regularly take morning or afternoon teas so they can learn more about our fabulous village. We also had a stand at the Orewa Boulevard Arts Fiesta with Destination Orewa. On the day we provided transport to the public with our village vans and ferried people to and from the fiesta. I had a fantastic time handing out goodie bags on the day. From Jo

Anzac Day Service To commemorate the brave men and women who fought in the wars, we held a fantastic service in the village centre. Our minister welcomed everyone and we sang hymns and read out prayers. Our choir sang In Flanders Fields, and led us during the national anthem. We were delighted to welcome Warwick Hojem to the village. Warwick is from the South African Military Veterans Association, and he spoke about the parallels he sees between the New Zealand and South African forces during World War II. Warwick also spoke about the South African forces involved in the battle for Delville Wood in July 1916. The South Africans had joined the British forces in the bitter fighting, which later became known as the 1916 Battle of the Somme. Finally, the Ode was read, the wreath laid and the Last Post and Reveille were played by our bugler, Kerry Roberts. The event ended with our residents sharing their experiences during morning tea. Resident Ron Cackett was also proud to show off the Anzac book and tell his story. The book is special to him as he also appears on the cover! It’s got to be
good enough for mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.
“I thought, what would I want for mum?” As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for mum. Or dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs is a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

infant clothing factory before she went into nursing at Auckland Hospital. In 1958, we were married at Mt. Albert Baptist Church and this year we are celebrating our 60th wedding anniversary! A few weeks after our first son was born, we moved to Ballarat, Australia. Ian started lecturing at the School of Mines, and we also welcomed our second son. In 1964 we returned to Auckland and Ian started working at the Auckland Technical Institute. Later, he became the head of the Science Department and was awarded the Sir Woulf Fisher Scholarship in 1966. This award gave us the opportunity to go on a three-month trip around the world.
We are now enjoying life at Evelyn Page, meeting new people and sharing great meals. s. Hello, our names are Ian and Kristeen Turner and we live in our serviced apartment at Evelyn Page. We met at the Mt. Albert Baptist Church and we both attended Avondale College. Ian went to Auckland University and Auckland Teacher’s College. He later taught physics at Penrose High School. Kristeen worked as a machinist at an
Our third son was born in 1967. Kristeen over the years took up piano teaching and pipe-organ lessons and was a church organist. She worked in several public institutions such as: The North-Shore Mental Health Network; the Christian Broadcasting Association as a letterwriting counsellor; and as an Industrial Chaplain. She also takes great pleasure with writing and transposing music. Ill-heath has forced us to give up our family home and we are now enjoying life at Evelyn Page, meeting new people and sharing great meals.
St Patrick’s Day At Evelyn Page, St Paddy’s Day is an annual event not to be missed! The whole village adopted their Irish alter egos and celebrated the day with Guinness beers, Baileys Irish Cream and “green” food. To top it off, we had a very special guest, our Ryman Healthcare Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod. Not one to miss out, he soon joined the dancers on the dance floor! Musical interlude
Anzac High tea
We were treated to a very enjoyable afternoon of music by the Auckland Big Band. To join the community band you are only required to be able to read music and play an instrument. Players from France, Thailand, Mexico, Japan and, of course, New Zealand, have joined the band.
To commemorate Anzac Day, we decided to get the residents from the care centre to enjoy a special high tea in the atrium. It was a fantastic afternoon with many great stories being told over cups of tea.

the world (on my terms) and do my OE. I travelled to America and spent the summer at a children’s camp in St. Louis, Missouri. This is also where I met my darling husband! When I returned to New Zealand, I started my employment at Evelyn Page. My husband Jonathan and I married in 2012 and we now live on a farm in Kaipara with our Dalmatian JJ. I love working in the kitchen and strive to deliver the best for our residents every day.
Build your castle Every year Destination Orewa and More FM radio station organise a sandcastle competition at Orewa beach. The event has grown every year and it is now very popular among our residents and the general public. This year, four of our independent residents decided to team up to recreate our village out of sand! The rain and wind howled around them, but the weather didn’t deter them from their mission. Unfortunately, our team did not take home the prize – but they are winners in our book! It was great to see so many of our residents and staff who came to support our team. Some even decided to lend a hand! Pictured: Our fabulous team; John and Fran Pritchard with Kevin and Myra Hunter
