Hilda’s Highlights
Greetings from Wendy... Hello and welcome to the Christmas edition of Hilda’s Highlights! This year has definitely flown by! We have been very busy over the last few months with the Romeo & Juliet season and Wellness Month, where our residents were encouraged to join in the Triple A classes. We also celebrated Diwali. Our staff dressed up in traditional attire and we held a competition for the best decorated unit. Congratulations to our winner – the special care unit! Staff also entertained residents with a traditional dance, which was fantastic to see. Thank you to all involved in making the day so special. We look forward to all the year-end festivities coming up, especially the Christmas lunches, carols by candlelight
and the late-night van trips to see the Christmas lights in Hamilton. I would like to thank our wonderful staff who work so hard throughout the year and also a big thank you to all the residents who volunteer around the village. We really appreciate your help. I wish you a happy festive season and a prosperous New Year! Kind regards,
Wendy Taylor Village Manager
Romeo & Juliet To celebrate the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of Romeo & Juliet our staff and residents embraced the romantic theme! Our activities included poetry readings, Romeo & Juliet quizzes and an afternoon of masquerade mask making. The Riverlea Theatre Actors group also entertained our residents in the community centre with their light-hearted version of the famous Shakespeare tragedy, which was a great hit with residents.
Charity partner announced In June, Alzheimer’s NZ was announced as Ryman’s charity partner for the year. Ngaire Dixon, chair of Alzheimer’s New Zealand, was delighted with the announcement as dementia and Alzheimers will become more of an issue in the future. There were more than 62,000 New Zealanders with dementia
in 2016, and the this is forecast to grow to 170,212 people by 2050. Ryman villages include 710 dementia beds and demand for care is growing. Every dollar raised for Alzheimer’s New Zealand at our villages this year will be matched dollar for dollar by Ryman Healthcare.

Summer menu launched! Our Delicious menus have taken our villages by storm since the launch in February this year. The much-anticipated summer menus combine age-old favourites along with a few new additions, such as the inclusion of couscous. Hospitality manager Andrew Gibson said that the team concentrated on refining the menus for this edition.
Outdoor bowls
“We’re building on the success of our previous menus by refining the recipes. We know what works now and we’ll build from there. But we also included a few new dishes.” Among these new dishes are chefs Paul Kuronic and Steve Iraia’s crab cake dishes. Paul and Steve both won silver at the New Zealand Hospitality Championships earlier this year, and residents will now get a taste of their creations. And the best new dish on the menu? “Definitely the brisket!” Andrew enthused.
This year’s champion Ray Pryor (right) with second place winner Trevor Sutton
Our residents who participate in outdoor bowls are given points for all the games they attend, as well as points for their scores during the games. The overall winner is then announced during Happy Hour. This year the Hilda Ross Outdoor Bowls Trophy went to Ray Pryor and second place to Trevor Sutton. We hope that more people will be encouraged to join, so we can challenge our sister villages!
The summer menus were rolled out in October.
Cashin Scholarship open for entries
Diamond celebrations Recently two of our residents celebrated a special anniversary. David and Joan Graham have been married for 70 years! David currently lives in a townhouse and Dorothy in the special care unit. On the day, they met their family in the lounge and we all celebrated their special anniversary with a beautiful celebratory cake.
Fozia Tasheem has no doubt that winning the first Cashin Scholarship changed the course of her life.
The 2018 Cashin Scholarship is now open. Ryman staff and family members undertaking tertiary study in 2018 can apply.
Fozia was studying accounting and information systems at Victoria University and funding her studies was a struggle.
For more details contact David King at: david.king@rymanhealthcare.com
Fozia’s mum, Hushn Bano, was working at Malvina Major as a housekeeper, and Fozia took a part time job there. “I did everything I could at the village to get extra shifts.’’ In 2011, she applied for the first Cashin Scholarship and it could not have come at a better time.
Congratulations Joan
and David!
Now 25, Fozia has just been promoted to a co-ordinator’s role at Datacom in Wellington, so her career is on the up.

Our resthome residents had a lot of fun with the parachute and various balls and balloons. They managed to reach their target of not dropping any ba lls for 15 minutes! The residents said at th e end that was tougher than any gym or Triple A workout! Well done to everyone who participated.
In 1949, my family immigrated to New Zealand, which turned out to be a fantastic decision. We settled in Hamilton in 1950. I attended Pirongia primary school and then Te Awamutu College. When I left school, I entered the building industry and qualified as a carpenter. After 10 years I had to leave because I had a timber allergy.
My keen interests are cycling, rugby, cricket and golf. I represented Waikato in golf tournaments. I also love fishing and even caught a Marlon once. I suffered from a medical misadventure and was lucky to be introduced to my daughter’s doctor who had me admitted to Hilda Ross. I can’t speak more highly about the great care from the staff and wonderful environment of this village. Our own little paradise. My medical problems how now been solved and I have moved to my own townhouse at the village. My life’s motto is that you get out of life what you are willing to put in!
Black Pepper fashion parade
Top Kidz Kindy Every month the children from Top Kidz Kindy visit our resthome residents and share their morning tea and have a combined fun activity. This month our residents were invited to the Top Kidz Kindy for morning tea and entertainment. June Shattock and Val Langlands really enjoyed reading books with children.
Hello! My name is Stan Francis. I was born in Edmonton, North London, to a Portuguese mother and a father with French ancestors.
I married my wife, Jennifer, in 1967. We have two children and now two grandchildren. My wife became ill with cancer and I nursed her for many years before she sadly passed away.
Recently we held a Spring Black Pepper fashion parade, which was very popular with over 130 attendees. Ten of our townhouse residents made a turn as models and the residents had the chance to check out the newest fashions. We also had a lovely afternoon tea with fantastic platters.
