Museum visit
Greetings from Dean... Hello and welcome to the winter edition of the Hillary Herald. We have been extremely busy at the village with the rollout of the myRyman care application. This will truly revolutionise the way care staff document their progress notes. The most exciting part of this is that staff will have more time to spend with their respective residents! In other news, we would like to welcome Kevin Bowgett to the role of head gardener. Kevin was previously the head gardener at a retirement village in Havelock North. We have done a thorough walk through of the village and we will be giving the gardens a refresh and replacing some of the older plantings.
We are also on the lookout for volunteers to become ‘village friends’ to our less able residents. If you are interested, have a special talent or just have stories to share, please come and see me. I look forward to seeing you at the fantastic events that we have planned for the village. As always, my door is open if you have any queries.
Kind regards, Dean Jackson Village Manager
Musical moments We enjoy supporting the local community and are proud to have recently hosted the prestigious St Kentigern School Choir to perform at our village. Many families and residents in and around the village have current and past connections with this iconic school. The evening was a huge success and started with wine and nibbles for an audience of approximately 200 people and followed with an amazing musical performance. Becky and Pauline

St Patrick’s Day This year, we celebrated St Patrick’s Day in the village centre lounge for our independent residents. As far as the eye could see, it was a sea of green! People put in a huge amount of effort to dress up and there was some fantastic costumes that won best dressed prizes. In fact, there was one couple who were so well disguised we didn’t immediately recognise them! Our fabulous kitchen team put on a wide array of green finger food to fit the theme. A fun day was had by all! Above: Olive Roser Gofton with residents Anne Gibbon, Yvonne McNabb, Doug Gibbon and Fred Baker celebrate their wins for best dressed! Right: Chef Clemens serving his delicious food.

It’s got to be
good enough for mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.
“I thought, what would I want for mum?” As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for mum. Or dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs is a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

Meet Kirsten
Institute and served a three-year apprenticeship to gain my qualification. In April 1957, I arrived in Auckland Harbour on the Monowai from Sydney. I had travelled first class from Denmark as my travel agent had told me that only animals and extremely poor people travelled in economy! Through Danish contacts, I found a job as a housekeeper in my first week. I was impressed by what I saw and quickly felt at home. I met Henning Holzmann and we decided to marry. In 1960, we travelled to Europe to marry in front of our family and friends. We both wanted to establish our family in New Zealand so on our honeymoon we drove a VW Combi through Germany, Switzerland, Italy, Greece, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Kashmir, India and Sri Lanka where we boarded a boat to take us home.
We were blessed with two children, both born in New Zealand. I am the proud grandmother of four grandchildren! Hello, my name is Kirsten Bojsen-Moller and I was born on 15 October 1928 in Denmark. My mother had a photographic shop in Slagelse in the 1940s and it’s there that my interest in photography developed. Upon leaving school, I was accepted into a photography course at Copenhagen Technical
We were blessed with two children, both born in New Zealand. I am the proud grandmother of four grandchildren! Henning became a builder and I became a photographer. After 27 wonderful years together, my husband passed away in his mid-60s. I have had a very good life and I am now living comfortably in my independent apartment at Edmund Hillary.
Museum visit A van-full of our fast-car-loving independent residents headed off to the Hampton Downs International Motorsport Park to visit the Bruce McLaren Heritage Centre.
The museum is a work in progress and will be well worth visiting again in the future. We were fascinated by the size and speed of the racing cars, and we only wished we could’ve gone for a spin in them!
We were greeted by the very enthusiastic and knowledgeable volunteer, David, who gave us a comprehensive talk and tour.
Lunch followed at the wonderful old Rangiriri Hotel where we enjoyed delicious meals before heading back home.

Easter celebrations
Valentine’s Day
For Easter this year, the care centre residents celebrated with an Easter Happy Hour held in the care centre atrium. The residents enjoyed the great entertainment provided by Ian Dustin and also ate delicious finger food! The Easter picture frame was very popular!
Red roses, music and laughter were all present for our Valentine’s Day breakfast this year. Our independent residents dressed up for the occasion and it was lovely to see everyone enjoying themselves. Special congratulations went to Trevor and Robyn Agnew who were celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary.
Even the staff got into the Easter spirit by showing off their bunny ears!
Joy Barton, Joyce McNee and Alison Harris enjoyed chatting over the delicious breakfast.

Introducing Clemens
One of my proudest achievements is working with the Swiss National Circus in cooperation with the Cirque de Soleil.
Hello, my name is Clemens von Ellerts-Martinoli. I am a very passionate, quality driven, food enthusiastic, Swiss-born chef.
I had heard about New Zealand. It was a leap of faith, as we moved without ever having visited the country.
I am married to Bruna and we have two wonderful sons; Yannick and Ryan. I have lived in various countries including the USA and Australia.
We arrived in Christchurch in 2007, and at the airport I got separated from my family and wearing all black, I was mistakenly channelled into arrivals with the All Blacks team who were welcomed by a haka! I thought you Kiwis were an incredibly welcoming bunch to new immigrants!
One of my proudest achievements is working with the Swiss National Circus in cooperation with the Cirque de Soleil. We catered for a winter show in Switzerland. I’ve always wanted to live near the coast and was fascinated by what

I like working at Edmund Hillary as a chef. It can be very challenging but very rewarding at the same time!
Summer BBQ Our special care unit celebrated summer with their annual outdoor summer BBQ. The resident’s families turned up in droves to celebrate the fun day with them and it was evident throughout the afternoon that everyone enjoyed themselves immensely. We couldn’t have asked for better weather, it was a spectacular day for an outdoor party. Everybody had a good chat, while dancing and enjoying mouth-watering food.
