Greetings from Joy... Hello, and welcome to our summer edition of Hodgkins Happenings. There has been landscaping work outdoors on the bank as well as kitchen and dining room renovations. The landscape gardeners have started creating a beautiful outdoor area with paving, grass, gardens and pergolas. It will be a magnificent area for our residents to enjoy when it is completed. We recently celebrated with a long time staff member Joanne Steele. Joanne, our night shift carer, has been working at Frances Hodgkins for 25 years. What a milestone! She started work before the village was officially opened in June 1995 and remains a loyal and dedicated carer. We were delighted to have Barbara Reynen-Rose, Ryman’s recently retired chief operations officer,
join us for the celebratory afternoon tea. Joanne is featured in our staff profile which I’m sure you will enjoy reading! Our residents have recently enjoyed many outings, entertainers and guest speakers. Eating fish and chips at Lake Waihola has proved a very popular outing and we look forward to doing this more over the summer months. If you’re ever visiting the village please pop in and say hello, my door is always open. Kind regards,
Joy Notman Village Manager Ph: 03 455 0277
A note from Kate... Life here at the village has been busy, with a whole host of great events and information sessions. We have welcomed Deb, the Breast Cancer Foundation NZ National Educator, to the village. We were delighted to hear from the Ryman charity partner for 2019/20 about their new initiatives and the progress being made with their research. Our residents recently heard from veteran broadcasters Bill Southworth and Dougal Stevenson, who talked to them about Dunedin as a heritage capital. Ryman Healthcare also sponsors a Heritage Matters radio programme, broadcast on OAR 105.4FM.
Serviced apartment available now!
I currently have a serviced apartment available. Please let me know if you would like to view it and join me for morning or afternoon tea.

A charming performer We were pleased to provide a warm welcome to Rebecca Nelson on a visit to Frances Hodgkins. Residents enjoyed a variety of songs including war time favourites and classics. Rebecca spoke about her travels and singing the New Zealand national anthem for the All Blacks in the United Kingdom. She finished her show with Vera Lynn’s We’ll Meet Again, with everyone singing along. Residents also loved when Rebecca mingled with those that had come to watch the show. Rebecca performs regularly at Ryman Heathcare villages, and has also crossed the Tasman a few times to visit our Melbourne villages, Weary Dunlop and Nellie Melba. Above and inset: Rebecca enjoys spending time with the residents after her performance.

Meet Sybil
I was educated at Queenstown Primary School and Queenstown District High School. My first job after leaving school was with the wildlife division of the Department of Internal Affairs. I transferred to the Government Tourist Bureau in Dunedin in 1955. I married David Kirkwood in 1959. David and I travelled overseas to visit David’s home country of Northern Ireland, and to represent Lodge St. Patrick of which David was a long-standing member. David passed away in 2006. I have two daughters, Robyn and Janice (who both live in Wellington) and one grandson, George, who is serving in the Royal New Zealand Navy. After my daughters completed high school I returned to employment, working in the retail shop Whitcoulls and then the Dunedin Public Library.
I am thoroughly enjoying living in my new home at Frances Hodgkins. Hello, my name is Sybil Kirkwood, I was born in Queenstown in 1935 and I now live here at Frances Hodgkins in a serviced apartment. I was the oldest of three children born to Cybil and Catherine (Kitty) Roderique. My brother died as the result of an accident in 1967, my sister Eileen lives in Dunedin.
Having a keen interest in sport I represented Central Otago in hockey and Otago in cricket. I also played lawn bowls for Caversham Bowling Club. I was involved with the Girl Guides and spent a term as an assistant provincial commissioner. I’m a longserving member of the Caversham Presbyterian Church and a retired Justice of the Peace. I am thoroughly enjoying living in my new home at Frances Hodgkins.

Otago Polyfest Serviced apartment and resthome residents were amongst thousands who enjoyed the Otago Polyfest cultural event. They attended the festival during Māori Language Week also known as Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori. Young people and their kaiako (teachers), who spent many hours perfecting their
cultural performances, later said that they’d loved the attentive audience at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin. Residents were happy to spend the afternoon supporting the performers, including many school groups. Pictured: The outing to Polyfest was enjoyed by all.

Crafting flax flowers
Serviced apartment resident Mervyn Cranefield was recently awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for his services to scouting and the community. Following the ceremony he returned to the village to have a lovely afternoon with fellow apartment residents congratulating him on his achievement.
Residents love their time with each other and staff during craft and culture sessions held in the village. Activities Coordinator Rosa Hickling was taught how to make flax flowers by her mother-in-law so she brought along some flax to share her skills with our residents.

Introducing Joanne
I love the freedom night shifts have given me.
Hello, I’m Joanne Steele and I’ve been a Ryman employee for 25 years as a senior nightshift caregiver. It has been wonderful watching Ryman grow into the great provider of healthcare for the elderly which it is today. I love the freedom night shifts have given me. They’ve allowed me to enjoy raising my children, who have grown into successful adults. I worked when the family slept, and never had to worry about school holidays, sickness, sports or other out of school interests as I was there during the day.

I am Nana to four grandsons, which is giving me the opportunity to share in the new generation… it’s great! My family is scattered around the world, and I love the travel. My other interests are gardening, church volunteer work, theatre, day trips and spending time with family and friends. It is great to be part of the Frances Hodgkins team, even through all the changes over the years. I hope to continue for a while yet!

Water station visit Our Men’s Club found an afternoon visit to Dunedin’s Mt Grand water treatment station very informative and interesting. They stepped out of our van, pulled on the high visibility vests supplied, and then started the tour. They learnt about the water cleaning process, found out about the sources and feeder lines for the water, and that Dunedin’s main water supply from Deep Stream gives the city’s residents a strong water resource. They were most impressed by the fact that all water for the city comes into the station and goes out to the households by gravity. Pictured: The Men’s Club took in a sunny afternoon during their visit to the treatment station.
