Search & Rescue

Greetings from Joy... Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Hodgkins Happenings. We are getting through the cold weather and looking forward to spring and longer, warmer days. The activities staff have been busy keeping everyone entertained and the residents have enjoyed a variety of activities, events and concerts. We’ve celebrated St Patrick’s Day, Anzac Day and Mother’s Day. Recently it was announced that the new charity for this year is the NZ Stroke Foundation. We kicked off the fundraising with a quiz night, and what a great turnout it was. We raised $547 and are well on our way to meeting our village target of $3,000.

In other news, we celebrated our cultural diversity with International Month in July. The staff enjoyed getting involved by showcasing their skills in cooking demonstrations, making dishes from many countries, including Sri Lanka, India, Japan and the Philippines. Everyone enjoyed it immensely. There are many events coming up, so please keep an eye on your calendars. My door is always open if you have a query. Kind regards,

Joy Notman Village Manager

Musical moment We are pleased to have the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra perform a concert at the village at the end of August. Following the performance, the musicians will join us for a delicious afternoon tea. We look forward to seeing you there. Kate

Royal wedding celebrations To celebrate the Royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, we decided to hold a very special bridal showcase. Many of our staff modelled wedding dresses which were provided by both staff and residents. The residents were treated to a fantastic afternoon tea while they decided which wedding dress was their favourite. Of course, everyone looked lovely and it evoked many memories of the residents’ own weddings. Above: The fantastic array of dresses provided by staff and residents. Inset: Staff members Becky Keen, Keiko Simpson and Shannon Butler with the three most popular dresses.

It’s got to be

good enough for Mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for Mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for Mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.

“I thought, what would I want for Mum?” As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for Mum. Or Dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs are a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Weary Dunlop chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

Meet Mervyn

My first job was at Perpetual Trustees where I was in the legal department but as I did not understand Latin, I couldn’t continue with law. I changed to the accountancy department and started attending university lectures and eventually became a chartered accountant. I later completed a Bachelor of Commerce. When I retired I started working as a finance manager for the NZ Fire Service. Outside of work I was involved in Scouting (leadership training) for most of my life. I was awarded Life Membership after 68 years of service. I owed a great debt to Scouting for helping me became a strong boy, and thus I decided to give back to the movement.

Outside of work I was involved in Scouting... I was awarded Life Membership after 68 years of service. Hello, my name is Mervyn Cranefield and I was born in 1932. My first home was in Calder Street, but my parents lost the house during the depression era. I lived in Pine Hill, Broad Bay and North-East Valley and attended the schools there. I went to King Edward Technical College and while there I passed the Accountancy One examination at the University.

In 1959, I married Judith Scott, a school teacher who taught maths and history. We have two children, both of whom completed a PhD. Jocelyn and Stephen are also both musicians, Jocelyn plays the cello in orchestras and quartets, and Stephen is the lead clarinet in the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra. We are also blessed with three grandchildren. Judith sadly passed away in 2014 and I decided to move into Frances Hodgkins last December.

Welcome new Kiwis At Frances Hodgkins we celebrate many milestones and none are more important than celebrating those who adopt New Zealand as their home. Arlene and Paul Martillana recently became New Zealand citizens. They are both part of the Frances Hodgkins family as Arlene is a housekeeper

and Paul is a caregiver. We are very happy that they decided to make New Zealand their permanent home, and so together we celebrated the occasion with them with a spectacular Kiwianathemed afternoon tea. Welcome to the Kiwi family Paul and Arlene!

Congratulations

Several of our independent residents enjoyed a fantastic afternoon at Taieri Mouth. Taieri Mouth is a small fishing village at the mouth of the Taieri River, and we took advantage of the scenery to enjoy a delicious afternoon tea.

Many good things come out of our kitchen, and one of those is our Chef Rachael. Rachael has recently celebrated a very special 10th anniversary at Frances Hodgkins. We are very proud of her and we hope she stays with us for many years to come.

Pictured: Our residents enjoyed the outing and can’t wait to go again.

in Dunedin. We are enjoying having a grandson near us. Kate, her husband Neville, and their daughters Aliana and Sienna, live in Waitati. Sienna is well-known to most residents here as she loves to come and help during school holidays. I love being part of the Frances Hodgkins team, and really enjoy the activities and the part they play in village life. Once again, I look forward to spending a few more years in this role!

Search and Rescue The Men’s Club had an enjoyable and informative afternoon at the Rescue Helicopter HQ. The men learned about the way the rescue helicopters work and found out more information on the operations that are so vital to many. They also had an up-close look at the helicopters and got to talk to the staff about the equipment used during a rescue mission. The experienced paramedics kept it informal and entertaining with anecdotes of jobs and their personal experiences. The afternoon ended with a relaxing afternoon tea and a few laughs. Pictured: A close up look at one of the helicopters used in rescue missions.
