Commemorating Anzac Day
Meet Pauline & Seton
Village market day
Greetings from Neville... Hello and welcome to the winter edition of Kiri’s Arias. It has been an exciting time since our last newsletter as we now have a fully built village with the addition of independent apartments. Welcome to all of our new residents! You can read about the apartment opening on the next page. Our independent resident reviews on the Aged Advisor website rated us so highly we were a finalist in the 2018 Aged Advisor People’s choice awards for the North Island. Thank you to our residents for taking the time to review us and providing us with such a high rating. We were really pleased that Ryman Healthcare offered to donate a substantial amount of excess building products to Reporua Marae in May.
A ceremony acknowledging the gesture was held in our conservatory and we were pleased that residents and staff with connections to the Marae were able to attend. Finally, we have been busy rolling out the myRyman Care app, with a tablet being installed in every care resident’s room. This means that staff can spend less time on paperwork and more quality time with residents. The rollout has been hugely successful. My door is always open if you have any queries. regards, Kind regard

Pink Ribbon Breakfast Our first Pink Ribbon Breakfast can only be described as a huge success. Many residents attending were resplendent in pink, including Seton Clare in Pauline’s pink jersey! We had lots of spot prizes and raffles and raised almost $2,000 for the New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation. I think it was one of my best events ever! Strauss opening It was a fantastic day for the official opening of our new 20 independent apartment Strauss building. The building was opened by Gisborne Mayor, Meng Foon and Ryman’s chief operations officer, Barbara Reynen-Rose. Mayor Foon congratulated the village for being a wonderful asset in Gisborne. He also congratulated village manager Neville Parkinson on his happy team. Barbara praised the construction team and design team who did such an amazing job. The building fitted in with the rest of the village and allowed easy access to the village centre under one roof. Guests at the opening were keen to view the apartments and after a delicious morning tea the staff were kept busy with tours! It’s got to be
good enough for Mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’
“I thought, what would I want for Mum?”
Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for Mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for Mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.
As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for Mum. Or Dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs are a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Weary Dunlop chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

Meet Pauline & Seton
This was followed by 13 years at Melbourne Cash, 14 years at Cook County Council and 10 years for the Gisborne City Council. His local government career also included 18 years on the council with nine years as deputy mayor. Seton was also a regional civil defence controller during cyclone Bola in 1988. The couple got married in 1964 and have three sons, Simon, Wayne and Jonathon. They are also blessed with four grandchildren. The move to Kiri Te Kanawa meant leaving their lifestyle house in Bushmere Road. After 18 years there it was a big decision. “The welcome we received from the management, staff and residents has made this move enjoyable.”

Pauline and Seton Clare moved into their new independent apartment in March this year. Pauline moved to Gisborne from Nelson in 1960 and worked for her parents’ business, Tiny Tots Arcade. She also worked at the Sandown Hotel as a cook for over 10 years. Seton’s career started at the National Airways Corporation where he worked for seven years.
Kiri Te Kanawa Retirement Village was chosen as their final port of call for several reasons. Firstly, the care and professional help that Seton’s brother, Wilton, received at the village, factored high in their decision. Secondly, the excellent reports by people associated with Ryman Healthcare and the comprehensive range of activities and trips on offer. And finally, the brand new apartments with excellent views towards Hexton and the surrounding hills. The couple couldn’t be happier.
Anzac Day Every year we commemorate Anzac Day, and this year our ceremony was well attended by the village residents and their families. Hospice Tairawhiti Songsters sang songs, while guest speakers included Monti Soutar, staff member’s Tina Soutar’s husband, townhouse resident
Hubert Wolter, and Health and Safety officer Paewai Tume. Reverent Lenore Bryant officiated the ceremony. Afterwards, the residents and guests enjoyed a fantastic morning tea. Pictured: Residents Neville and Yvonne Jenkins attending our Anzac Day service.

Woman’s Day
Cinco de Mayo
For International Women’s Day we had several speakers including clinical manager, Jenny Wood, residents, and assistant to the manager, Yvette Brown. Our two activities coordinators, Carol Bothamley and Peter Shaw provided fantastic music, and activities coordinator Claire Davies also made gorgeous corsages for the residents.
Residents from the special care unit celebrated a fun Cino de Mayo day. They made delicious nachos to share that went out the door really fast. We can’t wait to have those tasty nachos again! Above: Elaine Horomona, Helen Lamont and Flora Brown helping in the kitchen.

Village market day During May, the village centre transformed into a fantastic market. In the months leading up to the market, many residents were busy making, baking and creating goodies to sell. Resthome resident, Ross Allerby, delighted everyone with his amazing seashell art, while resident Frances Bailey cooked up a storm of preserves and cookies. On the day we also held raffles, sold pre-loved items and much more! Thank you to everyone who came, as well as the volunteers who lent a helping hand. We raised $742 for Alzheimer’s NZ.
