Summer garden party
Greetings from Lynne... Hello and welcome to Malvina Overtures. It has been a busy year so far in the village. Our serviced apartment residents are loving their newly refurbished apartments, which have been upgraded from studio apartments to stunning one-bedroom apartments! The new village lounge has been very popular during the last couple of months as everyone gathered to watch the Commonwealth Games and matches during the cricket season. The window glazing of the atrium has also been completed. I am sure the new roofing insulation will make a big difference to help keep the area warmer in the winter, especially the wall heaters. Thank you to everyone for being so patient during
the work with the scaffolding. It’s so lovely to have our stunning view back. The foundation work for our new Figaro independent apartment block is still ongoing, so I appreciate your patience in this. It is so exciting to watch the progress. Our gardeners, Brian and Hugh, can’t wait to get in the gardens after all this work. Please remember that my door is always open if you have a query. Kind regards,
Lynne Peirse Village Manager
Fabulous art expo On Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 June we will be showcasing local artists at our annual art exhibition. We will be hosting the event together with Wellington Art Club artists, and we even have two residents who will showcase their work! There will be light refreshments available on the day and you can purchase artwork if you wish. Hope to see you there, Bronwyn Featured artwork ‘The Monastry’ by Helen Wilson

Anzac Day service To commemorate Anzac Day, a wonderful service was held in La Scala to remember those who fought for our country and our freedom. Huge numbers turned up for the service and many of our residents participated by sharing their memories of the war. Major Roger Horton conducted the service with the support of the Salvation Army band. Special guest, Major Mark Richard, from the RNZAMC also shared his experiences in more recent overseas conflict. It was a touching ceremony, which reminded everyone of the great sacrifices New Zealanders made during the war. Above: The Salvation Army band in action. Right: Resident Frank Cook-Willes and activities assistant Edgar Mamaril laying the wreath.

It’s got to be
good enough for mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.
“I thought, what would I want for mum?” As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for mum. Or dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs is a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

Meet Lindsey
We later moved to Hamilton so that we could attend high school. I consider myself to be slightly shy, and a bit of a homebody. Although I didn’t have any travel aspirations, one thing I was particularly good at was giving speeches. I could project my voice well and my father helped to coach me in speech writing. It made me quite nervous, but I always felt good afterwards. After I finished school I was employed at a large department store called Hooker and Kinston. I worked in the office under the careful mentoring of Ms Nobel, who was a wonderful teacher. I soon met my husband Ronald who was a farm manager at the time and we courted for two years before we married. We welcomed a son and a daughter to our family, and we bought a farm where I helped out from time to time.
My favourite place to visit is the sea, as I can remember going on many trips to the beach when I was young. Hello, my name is Lindsey Boyles and I am a new resthome resident. I was born in Waverly, Taranaki, and was the eldest of three girls. My parents were sheep farmers.
My favourite place to visit is the sea, as I can remember going on many trips to the beach when I was young. The closest beach was Mount Maunganui and we spent many wonderful holidays on the beach. I love living at Malvina Major and especially the delicious food, always getting help and support when I need it, and most of all, the excellent staff.
Garden party To celebrate one of the best summers we have seen we decided to go all out for our annual garden party. The independent and serviced apartment residents donned their best hats and had fun with fantastic music and food. Summer party: Dorothy Hitchins, Evelyn Smither, June Lawson, Margaret Mousey-Smith and Mary Tresch.

Going green
Board games
Every year we celebrate St Patrick’s Day with a lot of fun and laughter. This year was no exception! Our independent and serviced apartment residents and staff loved dressing up in hilarious costumes and having a drink with their friends and family to toast the Irish holiday.
Debbie Quennell, our wonderful lifestyle assistant, is working hard to bring new activities to the village for residents to participate in. One of these activities is blackgammon and Bill Atkins decided to challenge her for a game. We heard it was a close game!
It was a sea of green at our Irish party.
Resident Bill Aitken and Debbie Quenell enjoyed some friendly competition.

Introducing Lynnette
Hello, my name is Lynnette Patel and I am the resthome activities coordinator. I was born in Fiji, but have lived in New Zealand for most of my life. My mixed ethnic background (Indian, Chinese, European and Samoan) has enabled me to feel at home in the village with its multicultural society.
I love spending time with my family. I am also an avid baker and cake decorator.
I used to work in sales, marketing and brand management in the beauty industry. However, after I had my two little ones, I wanted a change in my career

and have always wanted to work with older people. So, when an opportunity at Malvina Major arose I jumped at the chance! In my free time, I love spending time with my family. I am also an avid baker and cake decorator. I spend a lot of my time tinkering away in the kitchen. At Malvina Major I enjoy interacting with residents and listening to their stories. I love what I do, no two days are the same!
Let’s talk about the men Our resthome Men’s Club has never been stronger. The group meets regularly to catch up and chat about their interests, careers, hobbies and areas of expertise. Staff and relatives also get involved with the fun activities and discussions. Recently, our activities assistant Edgar Mamaril, was joined by residents Frank Cooke-Willis, Michael McCellonel, Desmond Snea, Peter Sheriden and Norrie Lewis, for an amicable discussion on politics and current events. Pictured above: It’s always a lively discussion when the men get together!
