Possum’s Post

Season’s Greetings from Philip... Hello and welcome to the autumn edition of Possum’s Post. The village is looking picture perfect with the gardens in full bloom. Thank you to our gardening team who have done an outstanding job. The year has started at a cracking pace with plenty of new residents moving into the village as their townhouses are completed. We are on target for construction to be completed by the end of May. The care centre has also had a number of new residents move in since the start of the year and we are now at full capacity. The good news is that our current residents will have access if they need to move to the care centre.

Our village has been busy with various activities including our annual Children’s Party, village BBQ and our monthly fine dining. The kitchen worked hard to make delicious food for these activities. There are many more activities coming up so keep an eye on your calendars. Please stop by and enjoy a coffee in the café! Kind regards

Annual

We welcomed the children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren of residents and staff for our annual Children’s Party. Our Disney themed party was spectacular – we even had a clown visit us. The children raced around playing on the bouncy castle, or getting competitive with the sack races and egg-and-spoon races. They then munched on candyfloss and delicious food, and afterwards they got to pet animals from the Little Bo Peep’s Farm. We hope that everyone had a great time and we can’t wait to plan our next one.

<generic recipe> Bob Scott bowlers take on Melbourne While most of us were sleeping off our Christmas feasts on Boxing Day, four residents from Bob Scott Retirement Village were heading to Melbourne. The winners of the Ryman lower North Island regional bowls tournament, Arie Molenaar, Shirley Wilson, Ron Scott and Reta Morris, were eager to take on Australian bowlers in the Glen Waverley Bowls Carnival. “The atmosphere was brilliant. There was a lot of interest in us and people asking how we were doing,” Arie says. The team also enjoyed their visit to Ryman’s first Melbourne village, the Weary Dunlop Retirement Village, where they had a tour and morning tea with the residents.

They all agree that it is the best thing to have a bowling green in a village as it brings people together.

They all give a very big thank you to Ryman and Denise Thompson, Ryman community and relations team leader, and Russ Nicholls, from the Glen Waverley Bowls Club.

Cashin Scholarship Winner 2018 Emma Glasson is all set to pursue her dream career after winning the $5,000 Cashin Scholarship. The 18-year-old from Invercargill has started her first year studying for a Bachelor of Commerce and she says the scholarship has eased the pressure on her family. Emma’s mum Deanna is a senior caregiver at Rowena Jackson Retirement Village in Invercargill and started there in 2012 after the family moved south from Christchurch. Emma says the earthquakes were tough on the family. “The earthquakes took a toll on us all and mum and dad decided that Invercargill would be a good place to move to.’’ Emma is the seventh winner of the scholarship established in honour of

Ryman director Mike Cashin. Blair Cashin, Mike’s son, said Emma was a deserving winner. “We were delighted to support Emma’s ambitions to study accountancy. She’s part of a family whose lives were disrupted by the earthquakes but she is a determined character who has done well at school through her hard work.’’ The scholarship is open to all Ryman staff and their families.

Ryman Healthcare is proud to be partnering with Child Cancer Foundation in the Haier Big Hoot. From 3 March till 6 May, 47 owl sculptures decorated by New Zealand and international artists will be displayed across Auckland. One of these owls has been sponsored by Ryman Healthcare. There will also be 60 owlets mostly decorated by children on display. Auckland sculptor Jeff Thomson has created the Ryman owl, which has landed at a location in Birkenhead. Jeff’s Tin Owl is made from corrugated iron and is quite striking against the other painted fibreglass owls. If you live, or find yourself in Auckland, grab some friends and go on a wander around the beautiful city and see if you can find Ryman’s Tin Owl! Introducing Judy Chapman Hi, my name is Judy Chapman and I am the van driver for Possum Bourne Retirement Village. I have been working in the village since July 2016. I went to Pukekohe High School and have lived here most of my adult life apart from two brief years in Brisbane, Australia. I have always worked in customer service roles. I was manager of a furniture shop in Pukekohe for 11 years. I also worked at Mitre 10 and for Joshua Cymbidiums who exports Orchids. In my spare time I like gardening, yoga, general fitness and spending time with my four grandchildren. My husband Harry (Harold) is one of the gardeners in the village and also drives the other van.

The part time roles we have provides us with the time to enjoy our other passion, fishing. We can often be found in the Manukau or Waitemata Harbour in our boat reeling in a few big ones. The best thing about working at Possum Bourne Retirement Village is the residents. St Patrick's Day was a lot of at on Edmund Hillary withenjoy They put a fun smile my face as they green outfi ts, green food, exploring our beautiful countryside on our andtrips of course, Guinness! Out & About and they are so grateful for the places I take them.

On his 70th birthday, Del decided to O challenge himself by cycling, unsupported, ch from Cape Reinga to Bluff! From that point fr on our lives changed dramatically. Plans for more cycle challenges came thick and fast. m

indy C d n a l e D Meet Hello, our names are Del and Cindy Henley. We moved into our lovely apartment at Possum Bourne in November 2017 – and settled in immediately. We have three adult children and four wonderful grandchildren. We originally trained as teachers and taught at many schools in the North Island. When we hit our 50s, we sought a change and developed a boutique wedding business in Gordonton in the Waikato. When we retired, we moved to Orewa and took up cycling for exercise.

We undertook three unsupported W marathon bike rides in Australia. From m Perth to Adelaide over the Nullarbor Plain, Pe Adelaide to the Gold Coast via the Great A Ocean Road, and, more recently, Adelaide O to Darwin through the outback. We still enjoy cycling around Pukekohe W and are currently planning the biggest challenge we’ve ever attempted. In May 2018, we will begin a 7,000km cycle ride across Australia, from Cairns in the east to Perth in the west. Again unsupported, we’ll cycle through vast, often isolated areas, towing our tent, food and belongings behind us in trailers. This time we are riding to raise funds for the Neurological Foundation of New Zealand. To follow our progress, please go to our blog: www.cairnstoperthcycle.blogspot.com Donations can be made at: givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/cairnstoperthcycle
