Winter solstice
Greetings from Jodie... Hello and welcome to the winter edition of the Princess Alexandra Post.
will provide better access for our residents and we hope that we will have it up and running soon.
I hope that you are all keeping warm and safe during the colder months.
We have also gained approval for a new bowling green! I am sure that come summer time we will see many bowlers making the most of it.
Despite the cold weather we have been keeping busy at the village with fantastic activities and events. Among them was a very emotional Anzac Day, a fantastic Mother’s Day and a delicious winter solstice dinner. We also celebrated another centenarian, resident June Nicholson, who enjoyed the day with her family and friends. Congratulations June! In other news we are very excited to confirm that we have a new lift under construction. The new lift
There are many great activities coming up, so please keep an eye on the engage calendars. Feel free to pop in and see me anytime. Kind regards,
Jodie Robb Village Manager

Happy Birthday June! We recently celebrated a very special birthday. Resident June Nicholson turned 100 on 30 May and she celebrated this special birthday in the company of her family and friends. June was born in Inglewood, New Zealand and she grew up on a poultry farm. She married a banker and they have two daughters. At her birthday party, June received cards from the Queen and Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and spent most of the afternoon chatting away with family and friends. Her family also brought in a gigantic cake and bubbles for everyone to enjoy. It was a happy party throughout the afternoon and we hope that June felt special, as she should do. Happy birthday June! It’s got to be
good enough for Mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for Mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for Mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.
“I thought, what would I want for Mum?” As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for Mum. Or Dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs are a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Weary Dunlop chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

Meet Elizabeth
I decided to save up for an adventure – a big O.E. to the UK. At 21 years old, I had finally saved up and boarded a ship to the UK. During the voyage I met my future husband John. John was one of six students on a Rotary Group Study Exchange going to England. We hit it off right away and from my experience I can definitely recommend a ship romance! I worked in London for six months and then I travelled around the UK and Europe with six other girls. After a wonderful 12 months, we returned to New Zealand and I married John. For 42 years I was a farmer’s wife on the Opiho Station in Northern Hawkes Bay. We raised four children and masses of sheep, cattle and dairy cows. What an experience that was! I am an avid gardener and when my children were grown, I was asked if I would like to open our garden to the public to encourage tourism in the area. I consented, and for the next 12 years we met hundreds of tourists from New Zealand

and other countries. It was interesting meeting people from cultures so different than our own. We also established a small nursery propagating

plants from the garden. I am pleased to say that my garden featured on Maggie’s Garden Show on TV One in 2000. I have many fond memories of that time.
I was born in 1933 and educated in Auckland. I was the youngest of five children and have many wonderful memories of growing up and time spent with my family. My parents went through two World Wars and a severe economic slump. My father was a Gallipoli veteran and during WWII, I can remember the ration books and the lack of treats. What we lacked in material possessions was made up for in how we learned to value other things, such as people.

Shore. Unfortunately, John passed away shortly after. I spent three years on my own before I decided to move to Princess Alexandra. Two of my children now live in Australia, one runs the family farm here and the other lives in Napier, near me. The village has been home for 14 years and I can truly say that it has been one of the best decisions of my life. It gives me peace of mind in beautiful surroundings.

Quiz time!
Harmony singers
Our annual village quiz afternoon was filled with laughter and smiles, as residents from all areas of the village showcased their knowledge. The atmosphere was great and a few residents won spot prizes. We can’t wait for our next one!
The Harmony Singers came to perform for us in the care centre. Our very own resident Philippa McCord is part of their group and it was great to see so many of us supporting her. They are wonderful singers with a theatrical flair.
Pictured: The village quiz is very popular among residents and staff.
Pictured: The performance was fantastic and we can’t wait for a repeat.

I have two daughters, one is living in Wellington and the other has recently moved to Hawkes Bay. I also have two brothers; one is in London and I am very excited as I will be visiting him later in the year. My other brother lives on a farm in Porangahau where we grew up. When I am not working I love to get out into the garden, and when I am not gardening, I like to relax and read with a nice Pinot Gris!
Winter solstice We banished the winter blues with a spectacular mid-winter solstice feast. Our resthome residents thoroughly enjoyed their lunch and the dining room was beautifully decorated in blue and white to fit the winter theme. During the afternoon we also welcomed the Ukulele Ladies who performed several well-known tunes. The delicious lunch was almost as good as a true Christmas feast, with the residents loving the festivities. We can now look forward to spring – and warmer weather!
