Out & About
Greetings from Debbi... Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Shona’s Artyfacts. My first few months here at the village have flown by. I have enjoyed getting to know our village, its residents, their families and staff. I look forward to getting to know you all better in the coming months. We have been very busy over the past few months with various activities and events. We celebrated International Month, Wellness Month and Father’s Day. We also welcomed the Dame Malvina Major Foundation to the village for a spectacular showcase. Keeping with the music theme, we also had the energetic Beat Girls entertain us, you can read more about that below.
We are also looking forward to the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of The Nutcracker in October. There is a lot of maintenance activity happening around the village in our gardens, pathways and walls, so please keep an eye out for obstacles. Please feel free to contact me if there is anything I can help with and I look forward to seeing you around the village. Kind regards,
Debbi Fairlie Village Manager
Musical Moments Recently we welcomed the Beat Girls to the village. They wowed an audience of 100 residents, their families and staff. The band’s repertoire includes hits from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. They are very popular, and we can’t wait to welcome them back to the village! Jacqui

Malvina magic! The Dame Malvina Major Foundation shone at a recent concert at the village. Soprano Katherine McIndoe, 24, and baritone Ben Reason, 21, who are both studying on a Foundation scholarship at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, performed romantic duets. Queen Margaret College student Iris Ma, 13, thrilled the audience by playing Mendelssohn’s Venetian Gondola Song, and 14-year-old Anna Li played River Flows In You, by South Korean composer Yiruma. Dame Malvina also attended, and many residents were pleased to be able to talk to her. It was a fabulous concert which captivated its audience. If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

also pleased to go one better than last year. “We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’
Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.
Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.
Steve came second in last year’s competition.
Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.
“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.” Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was

myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Office Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care
system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.
“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

Resident Profile
Lorna Savage
I met my husband, Larry, at a dance in Nelson. Larry was a promising rugby player who later got picked for the All Blacks team. We married in April 1953, before moving to Pahiatua, where Larry worked as a civil engineer. Larry and I have two children, Philippa and Grant. We moved back to Wellington in 1960 and remained in the Lower Hutt area. During this time, I returned to working as a hairdresser for several years and owned my own salon in Fairfield in the 70s. When I moved to Shona McFarlane I was amazed at how many people I know from that time! I was always a keen gardener, and I love floral art. I am also an avid antique collector.
I love living here as it is friendly and homely.
Hello, my name is Lorna Savage. I was born on 25 January 1930 in Nelson, the third of four children, After leaving school I trained as a hairdresser, I loved sports and played indoor basketball and represented Nelson in my marching team – we won the South Island Championships. I am also a keen supporter of the All Blacks.
In 2014, I decided it was time to look to the future and moved into my serviced apartment here at the village. I chose the serviced apartment because I had made several friends in the village who lived in townhouses and I would still be able to see them, but had the benefit of daily meals and housekeeping. My favourite activities are Triple A, going on outings and the Happy Hours. I love living here as it is friendly and homely.
Father’s Day To celebrate Father’s Day this year our residents gathered in the village centre with their families to enjoy a delicious lunch of fish and chips. Meanwhile, singer Alan Hooper entertained the crowd with a fantastic performance that captivated his audience.
It was lovely to see so many fathers come to the event accompanied by their loved ones. We hope you all had a wonderful time and we are already planning our next event. Pictured: Residents Hank Van Duyn and Mike Murfitt.

Fashion Show
Out & About
The serviced apartment residents had the pleasure of a fantastic spring fashion show with Te Omanga Hospice. Several residents modelled the clothes for a delighted audience and afterwards residents were able to enquire about and buy some of the pieces.
Recently several of our residents enjoyed an outing to Paraparaumu beach. It was a fantastic afternoon exploring and walking on the beach. Naturally, we also enjoyed a great afternoon tea before heading back home. Above: Resident Michael Flude strolling in the winter sunshine at Paraparaumu.

three times! It was a great childhood growing up between two diverse cultures. I met my husband Paul in 1992. We got married and bought our first home in Stokes Valley. Our son Caleb sadly passed away at birth, however, we welcomed three more children; Cody, Bailey and Natasha. We also have a lovely dog – Matrix. When I am not working I enjoy renovating, camping, and being with friends and family.
Game time! At Shona McFarlane we take table tennis very seriously and consequently challenged our sister village, Bob Scott, to a table tennis challenge! In September the first match took place at Bob Scott village and what a close game that was! We managed to hold onto the lead and won 13-11.
