Helping our environment

Greetings from Tracey... Hello and welcome to the winter edition of Shona’s Artyfacts. As you know, I have taken on the position of village manager at our sister village Rita Angus Retirement Village. Thank you to those who sent well wishes and dropped in to say goodbye. As I write this newsletter for the last time, I think back to when I first came to the village, hoping I had made the right decision. But, as I sit here, I am bursting with pride and happiness thinking about my time here at the village. I can proudly say that Shona McFarlane is my second home. It has been an amazing six years and I am forever grateful to the fantastic team who have walked beside me, and helped make the village what it is today.

It has been a busy few months with many great outings and events held at the village. Our Anzac Day service this year was especially memorable. In other news, staff and residents have been encouraged to get their flu shot and it was pleasing to see so many take up Ryman’s offer of free vaccinations. I would like to close by saying thank you to the residents, staff, friends and family who have made my time at Shona McFarlane so fantastic. Kind regards,

Tracey Sprott Village Manager

Time for croquet We’re very happy to continue our sponsorship of the Waimarie Hutt Valley Croquet Club when they move premises to their new home at the revitalised Fraser Park! It’s a great club with members of all ages. If you’re interested in croquet I encourage you to give me a call and I can put you in touch. Jacqui

Show time! Recently we decided that a variety show would be just the thing to celebrate the royal wedding of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. We recruited our very own ‘royal’ couple and hosted a ‘royal’ wedding, with lots of residents attending the festivities. We celebrated with a delicious tea party, while some fantastic acts entertained the crowd. We enjoyed a great opera, a talented magician, and a performance by the students from Avalon School. The resounding laughter was just the thing to warm everyone up on a cold day. Above: The Avalon School’s Kapa Haka group performing. Right: Resident Peter Cartwright and activities coordinator Angela Ravlich put on a convincing show as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle. Inset: Our host, Leo Barnett in action.

It’s got to be

good enough for Mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for Mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for Mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.

“I thought, what would I want for Mum?” As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for Mum. Or Dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs are a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Weary Dunlop chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

Resident Profile

Hugh and Peg Gilman

Peg and Hugh have three sons. While they were growing up Peg worked part-time, mostly in dementia and Alzheimer’s care units. Hugh became a teacher and taught physics in a New York State college and at a Black College in Atlanta during the height of the civil rights movement in the 60s. Hugh went on to do manufacturing scheduling and data processing for a pump company (in Massachusetts) and then for another firm making saws and files. The couple moved to Wellington in 1983 and lived in Northland. Peg went back to university and obtained a master’s degree in religious studies while Hugh worked at Databank as a project manager. He also introduced the Resident Withholding Tax at the behest of IRD for the trading banks of New Zealand.

We met while attending the University of New Hampshire.

Meet Hugh and Peg Gilman. Hugh was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1940 and Peg was born in Massachusetts in 1945. The couple met while attending the University of New Hampshire. Peg graduated with an honours degree in Occupational Therapy, while Hugh obtained two degrees in physics. They courted for a year before marrying.

Peg loves horses and owned three of them. Although she has given up riding (after many years of winning ribbons and falls!) she still sponsors a pony at the Riding for Disabled, where she also volunteers. Peg is also a painter and a member of the Karori Arts and Crafts centre. The couple are proud grandparents to four grandchildren and have been in their townhouse at Shona McFarlane for five years. They love it here and wouldn’t have it any other way.

Helping our environment Recently, our townhouse residents got together to clean up Petone beach. Resident Erica Whyte came up with the idea to help the environment and our residents enthusiastically jumped on board. However, resident Alby Watkins appeared to have collected more driftwood than rubbish!

It was a great day out and with the numerous bags collected, it means that we can help to keep our beaches and oceans clean! Right: Resident Albert Watkins enjoyed helping the environment.

Anzac Day

Out & About

This year our Anzac Day service was especially memorable. The village centre was full with residents and their families attending. The service brought a few tears, but it was also an opportunity to come together as a village to remember the brave men and women who fought in the war.

Our independent and serviced apartment residents recently visited ReMakery in NaeNae, who grow and sell their own vegetables to raise money. The community project aims to provide 2,500 meals per day for our local children at the school.

Above: Resident Noeline Fergusson and activities coordinator Roni created the fantastic Anzac display.

Above: Residents Judy Keesing and Margaret Wollerman were thrilled to see so many pumpkins in the storage!

My role requires a motivated and enthusiastic attitude – I love stepping up to the challenge!

I have been part of the Ryman family for eight years, where I started as a senior carer at Rita Angus. In 2014, I moved to Shona McFarlane and I am currently working as the resthome activities coordinator.

I am looking forward to many more adventures at the village – the place I consider to be my second home. I am proud to call myself a Rymanian!

Wine time Of all the activities we have enjoyed over the last few months, the wine tasting at Martinborough Vineyard was definitely a highlight! A group of independent residents visited the vineyard and loved tasting the different wines on offer. The vineyard, established in 1980 is a pioneering producer of wine in Martinborough, with a special commitment to pinot noir. It was the first winery to plant pinot noir grapes in the region and has earned a reputation for excellence. What better way to spend an afternoon? Above: The residents had a lovely time out and about and are looking forward to their next adventure.
