Greetings from Rachel... Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Upham’s Telegram. It is hard to believe that winter has come and gone and we’re now enjoying spring again. Everyone is commenting on how quickly this year is passing and as they say; time flies when you’re having fun! It has been a great few months at the village. We have welcomed a number of new residents and we’re looking forward to the completion of our two brand new independent apartment blocks, named Kippenberger and Hinton. As always, our residents are enjoying fantastic activities and events and there are many more activities to look forward to in the coming months leading up to Christmas.

We will be celebrating the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of The Nutcracker, by enjoying a nine-course feast at our fabulous fine dining event. We will also host the Ryman South Island Bowls Competition and we’re looking forward to Cup Day celebrations. This is what village living is all about – there’s never a dull moment at Charles Upham! Kind regards,

Rachel Garrard Village Manager

Road Code refresher We recently held a Road Code refresher course at the village. It was run by Yvonne Palmer from Age Concern Canterbury. The course included tips on driving and feeling more confident behind the wheel, and it was very popular with our residents. Chris and Wendy

Art with Mark We are very lucky to have an artist among our gardening team. Gardener, Mark Adams (pictured), surprised residents with a fantastic piece of artwork for International Month. Since then Mark has shared his passion at a recent Q&A session. After explaining that everyone can do art, Mark showed staff and residents just what he was capable of. Using paint, an old Warehouse Stationery card, a pallet knife and one brush, Mark astonished his audience with how fast he could produce an impressionist landscape. Everyone loved talking to Mark and the session continued long after with questions. Inset top: Head Chef Marko Meingasser pointing to his caricature. Inset bottom: The residents loved Mark’s rabbit comic reel.

If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.

also pleased to go one better than last year. “We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’

Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.

Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.

Steve came second in last year’s competition.

Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.” Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was

Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents. Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.

myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Office Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care

system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.

“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

into their environment, which is active, motivating, and most of all, welcoming. Both Lynn and Christine are South Islanders. Lynn was born in Dunedin and grew up in Mosgiel, while Christine was born in Christchurch but grew up in Cust on a farm. Christine attended Rangi Ruru and eventually, after school, trained as a teacher. She taught in schools in Canterbury and Nelson before meeting and marrying Lynn. Lynn was a watchmaker for 20 years, until his eyes started deteriorating. He built up a contracting business, which he sold after 8 years, and then continued with a further two businesses, which he started.

Lynn and Christine Andrews are an active couple loving the community at Charles Upham Retirement Village. Lynn and Christine moved to Rangiora 15 years ago to assist Christine’s mother and have been here ever since.

Christine and Lynn, parents of two girls, are both volunteers. Lynn volunteered in the fire brigade and St John’s ambulance, while Christine volunteered at the New Life School. They are still actively volunteering at Fernside School today. Since moving into the village, the couple feel more secure with the modern housing and amenities available. It has given them the opportunity to give back some of their time to the community and can also socialise with friends at the village.

The pair moved into their townhouse in 2016 and in the two years since moving in, they have grown

Building relationships Our village has a special relationship with Fernside School and its students. Some of our residents regularly visit the school to help students with reading, discovery time, and to help create costumes for the school production. The serviced apartment and special care residents attended the school’s production, which

was, according to the residents, simply outstanding! To congratulate the students, staff and residents recently treated them to a delicious lunch and an ice block! Top: Resident Lynn Andrews helps out the boys. Right: Resident Katherine Sturgeon loves to read stories to the kids.

Ethel and Bethel Bingo

Father’s Day

At our bingo night, staff dressed up so well that some residents had trouble recognising them. Resident Hugh Paterson won the first line prize, a bag of Oddfellows, while Colin Ross won the overall prize of prunes and toilet paper. Everyone is ready for our next bingo date.

A surprise Father’s Day outing to the Toy Collector Museum in Christchurch delighted many of our residents. The Toy Museum, that displays an eclectic collection of toys, fascinated everyone. A wonderful day to celebrate the fathers in our village.

Introducing Madelyn

I love the work, as it makes me feel like I am taking care of my own family.

Hello, my name is Madelyn Premacio, and I am the Clinical Manager at Charles Upham.

in New Zealand, I worked as a caregiver for two years and absolutely loved it.

I grew up in Cebu, the Philippines and graduated with a Bachelors Degree in nursing. I worked in a government hospital while studying for my Masters Degree in Nursing Administration before teaching student nurses.

I have always worked in aged care, I love the work as it makes me feel like I am taking care of my own family. Working at Ryman is the best – we all share the same goal and give our best to achieve it.

My family had the opportunity to come to New Zealand in August 2007. Before I graduated the nursing course

Rebecca Nelson performs Residents were very happy to welcome back the fabulous Rebecca Nelson for another fantastic performance in the village centre. With special anecdotes of her travels during each song, Rebecca kept her audience spellbound. Several residents of Welsh descent loved it when Rebecca flawlessly sang the Welsh Anthem; Mae Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau. The classical singer also graced everyone with a truly special rendition of Hallelujah during which ¯ she performed a verse in Maori. Afterwards residents gathered for an afternoon tea, and of course, got the opportunity to speak to the singer herself. Inset: Resident Pam Williamson was very happy to talk to Rebecca, as Rebecca is married to Pam’s best friend’s grandson.
