Triple A accreditation

Greetings from Christina... Hello and welcome to the winter edition of Wallace’s Words. As always, the last few months have been filled with fun and laughter at the village. We have had some exceptionally memorable events at the village recently. One such event was our royal wedding themed Happy Hour. We celebrated everything British with a fantastic raffle with loads of prizes. Everyone was having fun when there was a surprise announcement that townhouse residents Ngaire and Ray would have their very real wedding at the village. You can read more on this on page 3. We were very excited to host the Minister for ACC, Iain Lees-Galloway, and our Chief Executive,

Gordon MacLeod in celebration of the Triple A programme’s ACC accreditation. What a fantastic milestone for the programme. In other news, our new bowling green has been installed. Despite the winter weather there have been some very keen bowlers trying it out. They tell me it’s wonderful, and very fast! They are all looking forward to the summer bowling now. Until next time, take care, stay warm and I look forward to seeing you around the village. Kind regards,

Christina Brenton Village Manager

Come fly with us Julia Wallace residents and friends of the village recently enjoyed a performance by James Tait-Jamieson. James performed hit classics from the likes of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and many more. A wonderful afternoon tea followed the concert. Chrissy

Royal surprise While royal wedding of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex captured the attention of millions, another couple stole the spotlight at Julia Wallace! When Ngaire Crockett and Ray Gilmore tied the knot in the village atrium, they did so in front of two families. Their family and their Ryman family. The evening started out with a royal wedding themed Happy Hour with the residents dressing up for the occasion. Little did they know what was to come! The big moment was only announced when Village Manager Christina, Sales Advisor Chrissy and Activities Coordinator Sheree took to the stage and let everyone know that Julia Wallace would host its own wedding. It was a very special occasion that everyone loved. Pictured: The wedding party; David Turner, Ngaire Crockett, Ray Gilmore and Marion Turner. Right: Celebrant Murray Mills officiated the ceremony.

It’s got to be

good enough for Mum In May 2018 Kevin Hickman announced he was standing down from the board of Ryman, ending 34 years of service at the company. There is no doubt that Ryman Healthcare would not be the company it is today without Kevin, and everyone at Ryman wishes him all the best with his retirement. The Ryman story began back in 1983, when Kevin was a former policeman turned private detective. He was asked to investigate a resthome fire in Christchurch, and he did not like what he saw. “The fire was in an old villa and there were four people to a room all with shared toilets,’’ Kevin recalls. “To me it was crazy, the standards were so poor. But that’s how resthomes were in those days.’’ Kevin would never dream of putting his mother into a place like that if she needed to go into care. “I thought, what would I want for Mum?” And so, Ryman’s philosophy that care has to be “good enough for Mum” was born. Kevin teamed up with John Ryder, an accountant, and together they made a dynamic pair. Ryman – a combination of Ryder and Hickman – Healthcare was registered and they bought their first property to convert into a resthome in 1984.

“I thought, what would I want for Mum?” As well as providing care that was better than anywhere else, the company had to be sustainable, with its systems constantly refined and improved upon. The size of the villages and the facilities offered may have changed over the past 30 years, but Ryman’s core philosophy remains the same. Care is still at the heart of what we do. And it’s got to be good enough for Mum. Or Dad!

Lawrence Slow cooked Italian meatballs are a resident favourite at our Weary Dunlop Retirement Village. It’s a hearty dish that blends well with our new Harvest menus, and residents love the texture and flavour. Furthermore, it’s a healthy option and is easy to prepare. You simply combine the ingredients and let the oven do the cooking – leaving more time to spend with your loved ones. Weary Dunlop chef Lawrence with resident Enid McCauley

Resident Profile

Meet Stephen

first townhouse here at Julia Wallace in 2007. My wife sadly passed away, and in 2016 I moved into a serviced apartment. I love village life and am actively involved in the village choir as the conductor. Every third Friday I hold an informative discussion group with other residents. We discuss world affairs and other topics of interest. Up until a year ago, I used to go to the local primary school where I would help out the children with reading. I loved doing this work as I believe that children should have strong role models. Recently, I celebrated my birthday in Australia with my family. The group of friends at the village decided to send me a Happy Birthday card, and so I decided it was only right to send one back!

It was a fantastic birthday made even more so by the special cake! It was an amazing replica of my favourite books.

Hello, my name is Stephen Stringfield and I was born on 14 May 1928. My wife, Margaret, and I have lived in various locations around the world. We moved into our

Getting older has not stopped me from being active or participating in all the village activities. On the contrary, I think that my time at Julia Wallace will continue to be spectacular!

Olympic games We held our very own Olympics in the resthome. Several games were played, including our own version of table tennis! Residents loved this event, and townhouse resident Avon Moss and resthome resident Bob Smith, delighted everyone in an entertaining match.

Afterwards the celebrations continued with a delicious afternoon tea where everyone debated which game was the best. Pictured: Our residents were fiercely competitive during the games.

Everyone was very competitive and enjoyed receiving their medals!

Dance class

Men’s Shed

We have recently held a series of dance classes. Our residents have been enjoying learning ballroom and line dancing. It has been a lot of fun and we all learned a lot!

The men’s shed has proven to be extremely popular at the village. Recently the group have made a stepladder planter. The end result was fantastic and we can’t wait to see it filled with spring flowers!

Introducing Benjamin

Hello, my name is Benjamin Benny and I am a chef here at Julia Wallace. I was born and grew up in the South of India, but I now live in Palmerston North. The thing that attracted me to New Zealand was the natural beauty of the country – it made me want to stay permanently!

I joined the team three years ago and I am proud to say that I am part of the Ryman family.

to say that I am part of the Ryman family. I started out as a casual chef and am now working permanently. Working at the village is fantastic and my team members and colleagues are all great! When I am not working I spend a lot of time on music as I am a professional piano player. Sometimes I head out to play for the residents if I have a moment to spare.

ACC accreditation ACC Minister Iain Lees-Galloway and our Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod threw off their suits and ties and got stuck into a Triple A class with our residents. Iain visited to promote ACC’s ‘Live Stronger for Longer’ programme, which Triple A has received formal ACC accreditation for. This is another great milestone for the Triple A programme after last year’s fantastic 10-year anniversary celebrations. It was heaps of fun and, after all those calories were burnt off, everyone was rewarded with a special Triple A cake!
