Greetings from Sharon... Hello and welcome to the summer edition of Wilding’s Rallies. It has been a joy to see the gardens breaking into full colour, with the tulips, daffodils, camellias and rhododendrons making a riotous display. We hosted many cultural and musical groups over the last few months including the NZ Symphony Orchestra, Rebecca Nelson, and several kapa haka groups. Our team has ensured varied and sometimes colourful events have been undertaken for Father’s Day, and for the Ryman Healthcare and Royal New Zealand Ballet season of The Nutcracker. The sports buffs were entertained with our resident-based bowls teams playing off against

some of the staff for ‘The Trophy’. This was a well fought match with the residents taking the match in the latter stages. We geared up for many entertaining events over Cup & Show Week, with some dusting off their fascinators to help celebrate. These are just some of the celebratory events we have been involved in. Now we are looking ahead to the rest of summer. From the whole team we wish you a happy, safe and family-filled Christmas. Kind regards,

Sharon Armstrong Village Manager

Top turnout for Scam Savvy It was so wonderful to see so many of you turn up for Scam Savvy presentation in late August. Karen Vick from the Hornby BNZ came and gave us lots of new information and things to think about on how to keep safe. Claire

Farmyard fun day If you can’t get to the farmyard, Anthony Wilding’s activities team will bring the farmyard to you. There was a stampede to get to the village centre when the pets came for an afternoon of fun in September. The animals – including miniature horses, a goat, chooks, a calf and rabbits – were a hit with young and old. Even the visiting rat had a lot of interested admirers – from a safe distance. The farmyard fun was nicely timed to coincide with the end of the school day, so the little ones could come and enjoy the animals with their grandparents. A great afternoon was had by all and everyone – even the rat – was well behaved. Above: Children, residents and staff enjoy sharing time with the animals. Inset: Harry Jackman meets the wee rat.

RYMAN E H T

H E A LT H C A R E S E A S O

If you notice the Christmas decorations going up a bit earlier in our villages this year, it’s to celebrate our partnership with the Royal New Zealand Ballet’s season of The Nutcracker. We know our residents will enjoy being immersed in the whimsical story of the Nutcracker as our villages are transformed – think sugar plum fairies, gingerbread houses and toy soldiers. There will be a range of activities on offer – from appreciating Tchaikovsky’s beautiful

musical score, to having a go at making themed-decorations for display. The ballet will be touring throughout New Zealand, opening in Wellington on 31 October, and finishing in Auckland on 15 December.

Ryman chefs take top prize At the recent New Zealand Hospitality Awards, our in-house Chefs; Steve Iraia and Paul Korunic, took the top two prizes.

also pleased to go one better than last year. “We’ve got the two top positions in the country, which is a brilliant result.’’

Steve has been the chef at Princess Alexandra village in Napier for 10 years. He was named the winner in the senior lifestyle section.

Steve and Paul had 75 minutes to cook meals for eight people consisting of four hoki loin dishes and four dishes featuring beef cheeks.

Steve came second in last year’s competition.

Ryman Hotel Services Manager Andrew Gibson said he was proud of the chefs, as the dishes they prepared had to be practical and suitable for Ryman menus.

“I’m absolutely ecstatic, it was a bit like taking care of some unfinished business.”

Village chefs serve up more than 10,000 meals a day to our residents. Chefs prepare the food fresh on-site, with three main course choices, including a vegetarian option.

Both Steve and Paul’s classic recipes feature in Ryman Delicious menus. Paul, Chef at Anthony Wilding village in Christchurch for the last four years, was

myRyman rollout crosses the finishing line Our myRyman electronic care system has been rolled out to all our villages in New Zealand. myRyman is a robust electronic care system located in each resident’s room. It allows nurses and care assistants to view the full care profile of each resident at the touch of a button. Information is recorded in real time, dramatically reducing paperwork. In 2015, Chief Operations Officer Barbara ReynenRose went looking for an electronic care

system but couldn’t find one she liked, so Ryman decided to build its own version.

“It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.” Chief Executive Gordon MacLeod said the project would keep Ryman Healthcare at the forefront of aged care. “What we have achieved is very, very rare. To take a concept that involved a complete change in how people work and make it into a system that is operable 24/7 in a care operation is incredible. “It makes us excited about what’s possible, and where we can take it next.’’

Resident Profile

Meet Anne

My father, a major in the British Army, was posted to Greece, and we were invited over. My mother, sister and I travelled to Athens and then up to Salonika. One of my fondest memories is of my sister and I playing at a park alongside the river. A big ship was sailing past and the soldiers started cheering. I later discovered the ship was carrying Scottish military, and they had seen my little sister was wearing a kilt. At the tender age of twenty-five I decided to come over to New Zealand on a six-week ship voyage. Every Saturday evening there was a dance. It was here I met my future husband, Svend Erick. I disembarked in Wellington and Svend in Lyttleton, but we kept writing to each other until I finally decided to move to Christchurch.

Every Saturday evening there was a dance. It was here I met my future husband, Svend Erick. Hello, my name is Anne Jorgensen and I am a care resident at Anthony Wilding. I was born in 1933 in a suburb of London, one of three children in our family. During the war my brother and I were evacuated to Derbyshire and was placed on a farm. There I found a love for the countryside.

We got married in a little church called St Augustine’s in Cashmere, then settled down in a house in Bishopsdale. I worked for ANZ in Cashel Street, in a similar job to when I was in London. We had three daughters: Anne-Marie, Sonja and Nina. I’m blessed to have six grandchildren. I moved to the village in 2017 and love the lifestyle here.

Older Persons Day Wimbledon Wing care residents celebrated the International Day of Older Persons in October. They listened to 50s music, and saw visitors and volunteers dress up in garments from ‘years gone by’. The residents loved travelling down memory lane, recounting stories and chatting to visitors.

The International Day of Older Persons is to celebrate contributions that older people make to society and to raise awareness about issues that may impact them. Pictured: Chris and Christine Hill relax as part of an international day of celebrations.

Father’s Day

Kapa Haka visit

On Father’s Day we stop and celebrate. Here at Anthony Wilding, in every area throughout the village, we celebrate the day. This includes an afternoon tea together, a happy hour and a fish and chips lunch with the Fathers.

To celebrate Maori Language Week, we welcomed kapa haka group Te Toi Huarewa. The young people sang beautiful waiata, as well as performing poi and a powerful haka. Our residents enjoyed this visit and would love to see the performance group again.

Introducing Anna

Hello, my name is Anna Benadie and I am a senior caregiver at Anthony Wilding. I’m originally from South Africa, and I moved to New Zealand in 2008 with my partner, my son and daughter. My daughter returned to South Africa in 2012. We gained residency just over a year ago, and we are so happy to be living in and a part of New Zealand.

I love to interact with the residents and take great pride in taking care of them.

I started with my second family, Anthony Wilding,

in 2011. I began to work in the Canterbury hospital wing where I stayed for 18 months. Then, with my qualification in dementia care, I started working as senior caregiver in the special care unit when they opened. Every day is a great challenge and no day is the same. I love to interact with the residents and take great pride in taking care of them as every single one is special in their own way.

Classic cars Our Men’s Club members were treated to a turnout of some classic cars in the village centre in September. The independent residents enjoyed a talk about British MG cars, and then got to see a couple of 50s models parked up at reception.
