International Month celebrations

Greetings from Liz... Kia ora and welcome to our summer edition of Woodcote News. I cannot believe we are on the countdown to Christmas already. As they say; ‘time flies when you’re having fun.’ As I reflect on the past year, I am extremely proud of the beautiful gardens and the wonderful care and kindness our staff give to the residents. The feedback I receive from residents and their families is overwhelmingly positive and it is great to see new residents settle in and enjoy life at Woodcote.

We were excited to celebrate the Royal New Zealand Ballet and Ryman Healthcare season of Hansel & Gretel, some staff and residents recently attended the Isaac Theatre Royal performance. We also held our own Hansel & Gretel show at the village to everyone’s delight. I would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and happy holidays. Please pop in and see me if you are passing. A few highlights for me this year have been the resident’s trips to Kaikoura by train and to Hanmer Springs for a swim in the hot pools. Another fantastic trip organised by our activities staff was the visit to Burnham Military Museum, which many of our residents enjoyed.

A note from Susie... Hello everyone, isn’t the warmer weather wonderful? Our townhouse and serviced apartment residents took advantage of the weather and took a trip to Hadstock Daffodil Farm near Leeston. We also welcomed Ryman’s 2019/2020 charity partner The Breast Cancer Foundation to the village. Breast cancer affects so many New Zealanders and it was fascinating to find out more about the wonderful work the Foundation does. We also loved a Dame Vera Lynn tribute by Vicki Lee. Residents and guests enjoyed the fantastic performance. If you would like to know more about life at Woodcote, please give me a call and I would be happy to show you around our lovely village. Fabulous concert! Talented duo, Two’s Company, brought out the smiles with a fantastic musical performance that had many tapping their feet. Peter and Jacquie Faulkner, from Aongatete, near Tauranga, have been touring our villages to present a wide array of tunes from different parts of the world. During the show, Jacquie explained that Latin, French and Spanish featured in their mix and Peter added that the pair will play original songs that he had written. The audience was spellbound by the musicianship as residents basked in the sunshine. The residents especially loved the show and we can’t wait to welcome them back to the village. Meet Nell

a small school called Puaha and eventually transferred to Waltham, where I found the class size of 45 students a bit intimidating. Christchurch West (now Hagley College) was next and eventually I started my training in nursing at Burwood Hospital where I helped patients with burns. During this time a couple of friends and I were invited to a social event at the Marist Albion Rugby Club where I met my husband Michael. We have two children, Donna and Matthew. Michael passed away nearly ten years ago, and I found it a bit lonely in our Rolleston home. My daughter let me know about the option of townhouses at Woodcote and I have not looked back. I really liked the fact that my townhouse was refurbished before I moved in and the garden was ready for me to make my mark.

I have made plenty of friends here and love catching up at Happy Hours. Hello, my name is Nell Riordan and I am a townhouse resident at Woodcote village. I have been living at the village for nearly three years and love the community spirit here. I was born on the West Coast, and when I was a tot my parents moved us to Little River. I attended

At the village I really enjoy participating in the Triple A exercise classes. I like to have a cup of tea before we begin and sometimes the programme is so busy that I contemplate another cup of tea afterwards! I have made plenty of friends here and love catching up at Happy Hours where I can have a drink with great company. It was the best decision to move here.

Gondola adventure It was up, up and away for our residents as they soared above the Heathcote valley in the gondola. There were smiles on everyone’s faces as they saw the incredible views of the Banks Peninsula, the city and the Southern Alps. When the residents reached the top, they got out to browse through the shop before a

delicious Devonshire tea at the cafĂŠ. Then they climbed on a bus to experience a ride through the tunnel while listening to the history of the reconstruction of the region. A wonderful day out and about. Pictured: It was a fun trip in the gondola!

applied and was very pleased to be successful. I have found the village to be very friendly, supportive and inviting. It’s a fantastic place to work and I love getting to know the residents, their families and my colleagues. I have been married to my husband Shane for over 16 years and we have an 11-yearold daughter, Emily. Outside of work I enjoy being outdoors on our lifestyle property with all our farm animals.

International Month Woodcote residents thoroughly enjoyed a trip around the world in 40 minutes to celebrate International Month. The dining area was transformed into an aeroplane piloted by resident Bill Hutton (pictured centre) and refreshments were served by our wonderful air hostesses Christine Tweedie and Sue Hurcumb. Each destination supplied the residents with some local music, costume and food. Countries visited included India, France, Mexico, England, Scotland, China, Japan and the Netherlands. Some of our residents tried their first sample of sushi, Haggis and bhaji while our pilot gave us some interesting facts about each country visited. What a great way to celebrate our diversity.
