MESSAGE FROM DAEIL - 2010 THE DAEIL PRESS

01 Principal’s Message by Lee Donghyung

Speak high in the saddle and always have confidence!

“ What are the reasons and processes to be a Daeil Foreign Language High School principal? ” - Private school principals are appointed by “the chairman of the board”. From this process, I was appointed Daeil foreign language high school principal this year. I became a Daeil Foreign Language High School Spainish teacher in March of 1984. I served in various positions at Daeil. I was head of the Language Education Department, head of the International Department, head of School Affairs, and vice-principal. And now I am the school principal. I tried to work hard for many students and teachers because they trusted and expected me to do well.

“ What are your duties as the Daeil Foreign Language High School principal? ” - Daeil Foreign Language High School is composed of 1400 students and 90 teaching staff. The School principal’s role is managing the school’s programs, personnel management, office management, managing facilities and media, managing students’ hygiene, financial management, and having a relationship with other schools and communities. The school principal’s duties are written in 20 article of The Fundamentals of Education Act. Referred to that, it shows “School principals have to control school affairs, supervise teaching staff and teach students.”

“ What do you think of Daeil students? ” - First, Daeil students are very sociable. Whenever and wherever I meet them, they greet me brightly and politely. So I have a good impression of them. Also I think the school uniform is one of the school’s trademarks. People who visit Daeil praise students’ tidy appearance and careful guidance. Whatever tests, sports, or club activities they participate in, they are very active. When Daeil students win prizes, participate in Daeil Hanmadang, or Daeil Festival, many people are impressed by Daeil students. Besides, Self Study and Academic Club Presentations are one of the advantages we have here compared to other schools.

“ When do you feel worthy as a principal? ” - Watching our students enjoying their school life. - When graduates visit Daeil and say that it has become better than before. - When Daeil gets credit for university entrance results, the increase of academic ability and teaching proficiency. - When our students who have participated in extracurricular competitions win a prize. - When our students feel proud of our school. - When school parents appreciate the school in that it offers highquality education.

Press reporter, Lee Donghyung, Principal Gong, & reporter, Oh Minju

“ When do you feel it is difficult to be principal? ” - I haven’t felt difficult so far as school principal. When some students have difficulty getting used to school life and complain about school facilities or policies, I feel happy because I can work for them. But, I think it might be difficult if I can’t find better reform measures.

“ What is your plan for the future? ” - My goal is to help our students be superior in personality and abilities, compared to any other school students. So, I will set the vision and brand of Daeil, and establish strategies for its development. As our school was first founded as a foreign language high school in Korea, we will focus on raising talented people who are good at foreign languages.

“ Do you have any last words to give to our students? ” - I want our students to speak high in the saddle and always have confidence. In order to do this, you should set up your dream and goal firmly and always try hard to develop your knowledge, sensibility, solicitude, and modesty. You are growing up by receiving other people’s help. I want you to learn virtues from the school which is necessary in order to become responsible and talented people. Some exercise will help keep yourself in good health. The privileges of young people are courage and challenges. Believe in yourself and keep developing your abilities. And make good friends in your high school years. Friends are great companion in life. Have a conversation about studying with your friends, then it will become less burdensome than before. If you and I work together, it will be much easier to make Daeil a much more enjoyable place.

Interview with the Student Council Leader,

Bae

Jaehoon

by Lee Kyeongwun

Q) What was your motivation to be the president of the school council?

Q) Please introduce your major public pledge and action plan.

A) Well, I thought our school, DFLHS has many defects in various aspects. However, in the 2 years since I came here, not many things have been improved for the students of DFLHS. Over the years listening to complaints and opinions by many students, I wanted to become the person who starts those changes on behalf of my friends, juniors, and seniors. With the support of my family, friends and my officers, I dared to run for election to be the president of student council. Hope, belief and support motivated me to be the president.

A) Frankly speaking, those 5 public pledges are nothing but little promises which were supposed to be changed a long time ago. I will change the fundamental problems of our school step by step, such as communication system between the students and the school, for the better.

Q) How did you feel after you were elected? A) Actually, I couldn’t believe that I was elected because I thought I’ve messed up everything, from the ramp cheer to the final speech. Once I realized that this was real, I felt very thankful to all the people who supported me, including my friends and officers.

Q) What is your determination from now on? A) Heeding every voice of the students of Daeil, I will change and improve everything from the smallest things to the biggest problems to try to make our school, Daeil Foreign Language High School, the proper place for the happiest school life. I promise to my colleagues, juniors and seniors that I will not be arrogant or neglect even small things but stick to my original intention. “I’ll take off my clothes if you want me to.” I will always be listening to students with my ears open and I’ll take the lead in solving the challenges we face right in front of us.

04 The Entrance Ceremony by Hahn Dongho

On March second, Daeil FLHS held an entrance ceremony for freshmen. Most of the students came to school with big anticipation. Although they had come to school on PST Test days, they still tended to get confused about the direction. Because they came from various areas, they didn’t know each other – which made them very tense. After all the students and their parents had been seated, the ceremony began. It began with formal steps, which include greetings and singing the national anthem. The freshmen representative made an oath with all the students. The principal, Gong Yeonsuk, put the Daeil badge on his school uniform too. Then, the heads of each language department were awarded with a one-year scholarship. A wonderful event was waiting during the ceremony. Barcarole, Cascade, G.O., and Concertino members had performances to celebrate the freshmen’s entrance. All the freshmen were amazed by the performances, and some of them admired the performers.

After that, students went back to their classrooms in order to get some basic information. One of the different things was the separation between boys and girls. Daeil FLHS separate them in order to prevent boys and girls from dating each other. Also, every student’s eyes twinkled with their own strong will, but they were overwhelmed by the tough atmosphere of this high school. In this way, the entrance ceremony was awesome and through this procedure, 431 freshmen finally officially became the students of Daeil FLHS.

Many colorful posters were put up on the bulletin board and in the school cafeteria. The loud voices shouting about their promotions were all over the school. The classroom which was dedicated to the publicizing was full of the students’ passion and spirit. Selecting newcomers for each club was officially held on March 20th, a Saturday. During lunch time on the 18th and 19th, each club received its applications in the main entrance of the school. In earnest, on the 20th they held interviews and auditions to select the freshmen. The clubs which hadn’t done their selection made more interviews over the next days, and finally finished on 24th. We hope every student who was selected for the clubs makes a fresh and heartwarming relationship with their seniors.

Club Activity

Press For 24 years and counting, the Daeil Press has strived to inquire, write, submit, edit, publish, and has been renowned for our quality articles. Congregating every other week in our “office,” groups comprised of pairs select and write for a particular subject of choice (Politics, Economy, Health, etc.), following the editor’s revision and mending of grammatical errors and awkward phrases. After numbers of thoughtful consideration put into our works, we distribute the finalized version of our articles to the school once a semester. Apart from publishing articles to the people of Daeil, the Daeil Press also provides our fellow students with academic displays and water balloon throwing booths during the school festival. With all of these specialties provided for you, why not enjoy this year’s festival with the Daeil Press?

Cascade On July 15th, Cascade, the only male choir circle in Daeil, gave a performance in Yool Gok Sil. The word ‘cascade’ means a small waterfall and it refers to men’s nice vocal harmony. For Cascade, the Daeil Festival is a place of harmony. The members of Cascade from the 26th and 27th classes all looked like that they had practiced hard. Especially the 26th members sang not only part-singing and acapella but also solos from each members. This caught the attention of many students who were watching them. Moreover, on that day some members of cascade from the 25th class and graduated seniors graced the occasion with their presence.

Inwhaji Inwhaji enchanted Daeillites by displaying black-andwhite pictures and pictures of the club’s activities. Their photographs showed precious moments that we do not want to forget. Their film displayed the different feelings of each photographer. Certainly, Inwhaji’s tradition, “The Paparazzi Event” was successful in the 26th Daeil Festival as well. “The Paparazzi Event” is the secret photo event at which a member of the club takes a picture of the person you like or love if you request it.

Huimori This year, the Daeil Festival started with a performance by Huimori. People who saw Huimori’s performance were impressed by the magnificent sound. The harmony of the instruments was wonderful. Huimori performed “Gilgunak”, the march music of the kings from the age of the Joseon Dynasty, this year. Unlike last year, Huimori also created a new performance. It was a beating drums part, called “Syengmubuk”. It was fresh and impressive. On the last day of the Festival, Huimori performed with Concertino. The harmony of Korea instruments and wastern instruments earned big applause.

S.of.T S.of.T, the rock band at Daeil, showed us a wonderful performance, just as they’ve always done. The performance of S.of.T is one of the hottest ones in Daeil. This year, the show was performed in Yool Gok Sil on the first day of the festival. Before the show started, the hallway leading to the room was crowded with students who were waiting for the show. It was a really hot day, but it looked like the performance cooled down the sizzling heat of the room. The stage was filled with the passion and shouts of the audiences. It was a great opportunity for students to relieve their stress.

Duality Duality, the astronomical observation club, had numerous things for students to enjoy during the whole school festival. They decorated the room to look like the universe with luminous lamps and a constellation projector called a planetarium. And on one side of the wall they hung a board to stick star-shaped post-its with students’ wishes written on them. There was also a tarot card divination, the most popular event of Duality every year, through which you can find out about your future. And as for mini games, ‘The face turning’ game, ‘Flipping over the coins’ game and ‘Initial sound quiz’ were prepared and candies were given as a prize. This year, too, many students had a pleasant time participating in many events held by Duality.

Cani Cani, the Daeil animation club, wore costumes of animation or cartoon characters. Also they sold magazines and caricatures of teachers. All items were made by Cani members. The magazines were elaborate and the teacher’s caricatures were really similar to teachers’ appearance. So many students were impressed by their work.

La Academia Following last year’s Little Mermaid, La Academia which is the Spanish culture club, performed another amusing play. They dramatized Sleeping Beauty and created an even more exciting story, Sleepless Beauty. Especially, the reversal at the end made the play more interesting. The performance was mainly played by the 2nd graders and 1st graders performed dances such as Joropo, Jalisco, and Flamenco. These passionate dances helped students understand Spanish culture better. Even though the acoustics in the auditorium were not so good, the performance was fantastic and worth their effort.

DIC is an acronym for Dreams in Cinema. As its name indicates, it is the only movie making club in Daeil Foreign Language High School. On the second day of 2010 Daeil Festival, DIC showed various videos with hundreds watching the audience. This year, they made 3 CF parodies(Wangtukung, Tucson, T.O.P), 1 music video(‘Ballerino’ sung by Leessang) and 2 films. The first one, ‘Change’, featured strange experience one couple had and the second one, ‘Five’ was a horror movie which made their audience gasp an d scream in horror. All of their work was so great and everyone could see how much they had tried. In fact, making a film requires much more efforts than it seems. So, why don’t we give them a round of applause?

Shalloon Shalloon is the Russian culture club in Daeil. Performances by Shalloon always gets passionate support from audiences. This year, they presented the play ‘A Snapping Turtle and a Rabbit’. One of the most remarkable things in this year’s show was the rap by the main actor Lim Hyundo, who played the turtle. Although he is in the first year, he was praised for his natural acting. Beyond this, Shalloon pleased the audience with various attractions.

Drama Club The only and the best English Musical Club in Korea’s high schools! Dramatic Romantic Active Music Association CLUB, Drama Club! Their 24th performance, “FAME” came alive at the 26th Daeil Festival. It was deserved that fantastic stage lighting, wonderful performances, exciting dances and music, and the passion of the Drama Club’s performers enchanted Daeillites. The unique and touching musical, “FAME”, showed their power to grab the audiences attention holding the audience. Finally, their great performance drew Daeillites’ enthusiastic applause with passion and shouts of the audiences. It was a great opportunity for students to relieve their stress.

C.C.C Which stands for “Creative Computer Club” is the club that takes charge of managing Daeil’s computer lab and holds a tournament during the Daeil Festival. They had always held a Starcraft tournament, but this year, they held a FIFA Online 2 tournament and brought great joy not only to the contestants but also to the audience who watched the games. They also displayed parodies of movie posters. The most popular one was a parody of a movie called “Poetry” in which teacher Kim Jae-Hun seems to be deep in thought. Through these activities, CCC was an energizer for students who were tired of heavy work.

Yong-Bong Yong Bong is a culture club for students who study Chinese culture. At the 26th Daeil School Festival, Yong Bong’s members presented a play like they did last year. They adapted a Taiwanese drama, “Hana-Kimi” hwa-wang boy & girl, into a play. Their play was a romantic story, but the play also contained many comic scenes and martial arts. Thanks to these well-organized compositions, all Daeillites could fully concentrate on the play.

Piano, soprano, alto, tenor, bass, and the conductor came together as one. Various genres and cute motions made the performance a lot better. Their performance made the audience feel happy and peaceful. The last song, the Ascension, was sung with graduated students who belonged to Barcarole. Their long tradition and solidarity will be everlasting.

DIVA DIVA has a short history -but! it is the only volunteering club in Daeil Foreign Language High School. At the 26th Daeil Festival, they organized a couple of games and waited for students to play them. There were two games, mole catcher, and bowling. Especially in the mole catcher game. DIVA staff members became the moles, so they had to be hit by the participants. If a player scored high points in both games, DIVA staffs provided some drinks and candies to the participants. Also, they exhibited some club pictures, so many people could enjoy the festival. Sometimes, one of the staffs danced with music, and it was so funny!!

Concertino

Laube

Concertino, an orchestra in DFLHS, gave us a great performance on the last day of the school festival. They performed the last stage. Concertino created beautiful harmony under the coaching of the music teacher. They started their stage with original soundtrack of Korean drama ‘추노’, and they played both classical and modern genre of music. One of the most impressive moments was the encore performance <Frontier>, with Huimori, the Korean traditional music band. It made the audience feel the harmony of Western and Oriental music. Concertino finished its stage with big applause and anticipation for the next year’s performance. They deserved all the applause.

Laube, which means “dew of dawn”, is the French culture club in DFLHS. They performed on the first day of the school festival. Laube gave a great performance by singing many songs with will-organized dances. They sang songs which are familiar to us like <Champs-Elysees>. And there were other songs, which made us feel the beauty of the French culture, such as <Les rois du monde>. They made their performance more interesting by changing their outfits during the performance. After the performance by Laube, we could feel more familiar with French culture.

Club Activity Papyrus Papyrus opened a book-cafe this year. They prepared board games, iced tea and red-bean sherbet (patbingsu) for Daeillites. These things refreshed Daeillites who were tired form the extremely hot weather. Although their book-cafe was located in the school library far from other clubs, its popularity was so hot. Students said that refillable iced tea and cold red-bean sherbet were greatly suited to the hot weather.

Hakbosa Hakbosa is a club which mainly makes a newspaper for Daeil Foreign Language High School. It is also the only club that publishes a Korean newspaper in Daeil. As well as making the newspaper, they did some different work at this festival based on their purpose. In the festival, the members of Hakbosa held an exhibition of illustrated poems written by themselves. A lot of students were definitely impressed by their masterpieces. On the top of that, Hakbosa devised an interesting event, mail delivery. If someone wanted to send letters to another student, members of Hakbosa delivered it instead of him. It was a great opportunity to show one’s feelings to others. They also did some enquetes and published their own collection of poems. All of the members did their best to hold these events. Everything of these was progressed in the lobby of the main building so it made the atmosphere of there more fresh and vivid. Although their exhibition and event were related to some kind of literary work, they were interesting enough for students to participate in.

Pastel Pastel drew a lot of interest especially from girls. Annually Pastel members display their own works. This year, they painted movie posters such as ‘Avatar’, ‘The Devil Wears Prada’ and so on. That seemed like real movie posters. Also they povided special events like tattoo and nail art. There were many kinds of peculiar patterns and various colors. Their skill was so superior, like the experts in the nail art shops. Besides, the relaxed atmosphere of Pastel was something they were proud of.

Yokozuna Yokozuna is the Japanese culture club; they annually perform a play which is a famous drama, “The Cantabile of Nodame”. It was so humorous and impressive that most of audience members in the hall enjoyed it. The story was about Chiaki and Nodame’s romance. Chiaki is a handsome, talented boy who is very famous in school. Nodame is a bright girl, talented in playing the piano. Their romance was made up through their beautiful music. The story line up was great. They performed as they were real actors. Also, the humor in the play was so impressive.

DFBS

Attic Attic’s performance was held on the second day of the Daeil Festival. The girls’ stage was full of brightness. They all looked like princesses. They sang beautiful songs such as “Cinderella”, “Can’t Help Falling in Love” and so on. Attic gave pleasure to the audience with their special performances.

Daeil Foreign Language High School Broadcasting Station showed a lot of videos such as a music video, a parody, a hidden camera, an animation and so on. The Daeilites were completely absorbed in their funny videos. Especially, popular stars such as Yong-hwa, Jeong in CN BLUE, Seo-hyun, Ga-in, and Jo-kwon’s congratulatory messages attracted the audiences’ attention.

Logos Logos, though its history is not that long, is one of the most popular clubs in DFLHS. Its popularity isn’t made by the fact that it is the one and only English debate club in Daeil alone. although members of Logos are fluent in English of course, by debating in English, they improve their English speaking skills much more and learn how to be perfectly logical and systematic in their arguments. Members actively participate in lots of English speaking competitions (e.g. KMUN, YTN English Debate)held nationally. Also, they held DDC, Daeil Debate Championship, in July and December for Daeilites.

Sorae Sorae, the theater club in Daeil, showed us a passionate play. The play was extremely well-organized and the performances of the actors and actresses were powerful enough to impress every heart in the audience. In addition, there was a twist that surprised the audience. The twist was related to a mysterious death. All in all, the play pleased the audience.

IS

G.O. ‘Glitter of Omnipresence’, or G.O. as its known, is the popular dance club in Daeil. On July 14th, the club showed us some powerful dance performances. The members of G.O. danced to the songs of Rain, SNSD, SHINee, After School, T-ara and so on. all the stages were fantastic and G.O.’s members were fascinating.

IS, which stands for ‘Information Specialist’, is the only club that takes charge of public activities in Daeil. Until last year, IS had opened a cafe but their arrangements for the festival were completely different this time. They held a bazaar, which sold secondhand goods such as books, workbooks, pens, etc. Their members collected stuff from students. At first, it seemed a little bit difficult because some students didn’t pay attention to their plan. But IS accomplished all they set out to do. They will donate all the goods from the bazaar to Cambodia. Besides, they invited other clubs, S.of.T and G.O., to offer fantastic performances to Daeil Students.

Caleb Caleb, the only religious club at Daeil, had a marvelous concert at Toegye hall on the first day of our school festival. There were many interesting things to watch at the concert. What they performed were worship dances and hymns. Some Caleb members performed amusing worship dances with rhythmical hymns. The other Caleb members organized a band and played lots of cheerful hymns. Also, some of them sang famous pop songs and hymns.

Liebe EUREKA EUREKA is the only science club in Daeil Foreign Language High School. At the 26th Daeil Festival, EUREKA performed some experiments. First, they dissected two rabbits in the laboratory. This attracted students’ attention. Second, EUREKA sold some snacks and beverages frozen by liquid nitrogen. Because liquid nitrogen is minus 196℃, we can freeze something with it. We expect that EUREKA will show more interesting experiments at the 27th Daeil Festival.

Liebe, the German culture club, had prepared for the Daeil Festival for a long time. They had intended to show the audience ‘Sand animation (a style of live performance art. An artist creates a series of images by drawing lines and figures in the sand with their hands)’. Unfortunately, on the day of the Daeil Festival, they couldn’t because of an unexpected problem. However, they sang beautiful songs and danced with joy. Their great performance made the audience happy and smile. They were applauded as they left the stage after finishing the performance successfully.

07 Daeil Hanmadang by Song Yoonsoo

On 26th May, 2010, Daeil Hanmadang was held in Jamsil Student Gymnasium with a loud cheering. Daeil Hanmadang is an annual intramural athletic competition which is held every spring. After the opening ceremony, Huimori and G.O. performed their fantastic shows to celebrate the event. All students were divided into three teams: Western department, Oriental department and International department. And they gave a lot of support to their team’s representatives while they were playing. In advance, each department’s cheering squad had prepared all necessary materials for cheering such as slogans, towels and balloons. Also, each team had made T-shirts in their own color so that students could distinguish which department they belonged to. The Western department’s T-shirts were blue, the Oriental department’s were yellow and the International department’s were red. There were 5 events: dodge ball, basketball, tug of war, relay racing and three-legged racing. All events were played 3 times because the match was held among students of the same grade. Whenever their team won, they gained points and cheered on their players. It was such a keen competition in terms of cheering and scoring points. The three departments were nip and tuck in the match. At the end of the competition, an award ceremony was carried out by one of the teachers. All three departments received awards. The Western department won the Popularity Prize. The Oriental department won the Unity Prize and International department won the Passion Prize. On this day, all Daeilites from 1st graders to 3rd graders were strongly united and enjoyed the activities.

08 Diva’s Cambodia Volunteering by Kim Kyoungmi, Ko Ara On July 17th, Diva and ADRF team members departed Korea and after five hours, they arrived at Siem Reap, the Cambodian Airport. The next day, they visited the Akira Museum. It is the landmine museum that helps people realize the cruelty of war and the importance of peace. After lunch, they looked around traditional markets and visited a Cambodian folk village. This was a good chance for students to learn the culture of the country. From the 19th to 21st, their days were all quite similar. In the morning, the volunteers educated Cambodian students in the Watdamnak Primary School. Volunteering was not difficult. It involved singing songs and teaching dance routines, playing dodge ball, and playing games of slapmatch. Because the volunteers were Korean students, they taught mainly using traditional Korean games. It was a good way to teach and share cultures. In the afternoon, the volunteers did physical labor, such as building a volleyball court, making a garden, and painting a mural. They dug the soil and plowed the field. The weather was hot and humid but Cambodian children encouraged them to keep

Interview Session

working. July 22nd was the field day, so they held several activities that the children could enjoy such as an obstacle race, a group jump-rope contest, a relay, balloon games and many other events. Afterwards, the sport prizes were awarded to the children. That was the last day with them. Though it was only a short time spent with the Cambodian kids, teaching and playing with them, Diva members became attached to them, so it was hard to leave the school and the kids. The next day, Diva went to a shanty town to volunteer. they washed Cambodian children’s hair and distributed food to them for free. The next day, the last day of volunteering, Diva visited Angkor Wat which is th World Heritage site in Cambodia. However, even there, students could see the sorrowful sight of Cambodian children peddling souvenirs. After eating dinner, they went to the night market and got ready to leave. They departed Siem Reap and returned to Korea late at night. It was a never-tobe-forgotten experience for them and would remain as one of the most worthwhile things in their life.

For more detailed information, we had the honor of interviewing one of DIVA’s members. Let’s get a vivid explanation of what they did!

Q: Did you have any difficulties while you were staying there? Living conditions were different there, so we had more difficulties than we had expected. First, it was too hot and humid! It was much hotter than I had expected. I heard that the humidity was nearly 90%. Because of this climate, there were many bugs and sometimes even lizards came into our room! Well, if you travel to Cambodia one day, I think you might have trouble with food, too. In Cambodia, they use some exotic spices with strong scents. Q: What is your most memorable episode? As I said before, our main activity was hanging around with the children. There seemed to be no problem until we found a nineteen-year-old elementary student! He

was even older than us. So at first, we didn’t know how to get closer to him. But later, we became friends by taking each other’s photos. Q: Any advantages of international volunteer work? Volunteer work is a very valuable experience in itself. Still, there are some merits that you can enjoy when you participate in ‘international volunteer’ work. First, it can be a chance to meet people who have lived in completely different surroundings. They speak different languages, eat different food, do different things and so on. In Korea, we don’t have much opportunity to interact with them. Also, through international volunteering, you are able to feel like you’re serving as a member of a global society. I think this is especially important because now we’re living in a global village.

09 Campus Tour to

Seoul National University by Kim Donghee During 2010 summer vacation, Daeil Foreign Language High School had lots of interesting events. One of the staples, and most anticipated events, was the College Tour. On August 4th, about 250 second graders and 8 teachers went to Seoul National University (SNU), the most prestigious university in Korea, which 24 seniors entered this year. They took several school buses there after having lunch and afterschool programs. After arriving, they got off the bus and moved to the auditorium. A lot of seniors welcomed them with open arms. There were plenty of seniors, of all different majors. Beginning with a welcoming speech by the president of the alumni, seniors and students started to talk. The seniors gave lots of helpful advice on how they studied and how students should study. Also, students asked them

10

about plenty of questions. It was a worthwhile experience for both seniors and students. As soon as the valuable time with seniors was over, ‘SHINE’, the Seoul National University student ambassadors, held an information session. ‘SHINE’ introduced lots of things about Seoul National University, for example, its symbols, club activities, and scholarships, and so on. And then, they amicably answered the questions which the students posed. At the end, students took group photos in front of Seoul National University’s building. This college tour was very useful and helpful for students. Also, almost every student who attended was content with that college tour. It became a memorable experience to students.

Spring Hiking with Chinese Language Departments’ Students by Song Yoonsoo

Climbing Mt.Bukhan is an annual event for students in the Chinese Language Department. On May 1st, 2010, the climax of spring showed the flowers in full blossom. From the 1st year to the 3rd year students, all Chinese majors went to Mt.Bukhan after finishing all their schoolwork. Some of the teachers, of course, climbed with them. Until we got to the entry of the mountain, everyone laughed and chatted with each other. But before long, there were some people who were out of breath after a continuous climb. From time to time we could see some students sitting and relaxing in gazebo or on rocks. Everyone looked tired but they never lost their smile and grinned with delight. Some people brought snacks like candy or cucumbers as well as water to refresh their exhausted bodies and hydrate themselves. Our brief route was like this: we went through Munpilbong which is the first peak of Kalbawi ridge → came down along the Kalbawi Ridge → then arrived at Academy House The trail got rougher and rougher as we climbed the mountain. An uphill slope and rocky ground made mountain climbers get tired out. But we could see the entire city below and the beautiful mountain scenery pleased our eyes. A valley resonant with the songs of birds pleased our ears, too. When the climbing had entered its final stretch, all students and teachers made time to have a talent show. Representatives from each grade except for third-year students showed off their singing or dancing abilities. Everyone had a joyful time watching the talent show. Although climbing the mountain was an arduous experience, it was a good chance to enjoy nature and have a pleasant respite from their tough schoolwork for a while.

1 1 D-Dorm Life by Han Seojung

#1. What things have changed in D-dorm? D-dorm has changed a lot this year. First, D-dorm changed its name to ‘D-dorm Academy’. It means that D-dorm is not just a dormitory where students sleep anymore, but can also be an extension of classes. As a part of that plan, a study hall was built and D-dorm offers math, Korean and TEPS classes (which is called the boarding school program). It’s on a trial basis just for first-year students this year. And an elevator was built for student’s convenience. The latest model refrigerators have also been installed for greater comfort.

#2. Everyday life in D-dorm Because we live with friends, there are many incidents in D-dorm. For example, when we live at home, our mothers wake us up in the morning but there’s no one to wake us up in D-dorm(Our teachers wake us up every morning but after we adjust to it, it doesn’t help us anymore.). If all of our roommates oversleep, we cannot avoid being late for school. Incidents can also happen because of a mishap in machinery. When it rains cats and dogs, a fire alarm can set off in error. It has rained so much recently, so there was a malfunction in the fire alarm system. Because of the malfunction, students misunderstood that a fire broke out in D-dorm and evacuated the building. Like those things, we can make many fun memories in D-dorm.

#3. What’s good about D-dorm? The best advantage of D-dorm is that we can sleep longer than those who commute from their houses to school. For that reason, the most important criterion for entry was distance to and from school until last year. From this year, D-dorm starts its boarding school program. So, D-dorm students don’t have to compete for after school classes. D-dorm also has a merit of close friendship. A friendship between roommates is different from that of classmates. They are just like family. They even feel more with their friends than with their families. Roommates can open their hearts to each other and say what they really think.

12 Ourhome Needs to Be Our Home by Soung Seunghyun

These days, many students often prefer eating out to eating school meals. There are a few reasons, but the main reason is a decline in the flavor of the school meals. So there is much dissatisfaction with the catering service, Ourhome. Complaints have been made since the first semester. So I’d like to tell you what the problems are. First, the recipes are sometimes too creative. A new term, “lemon bulgogi” was coined during the first semester. Students named it because lemon slices were added to bulgogi. The dish was so awful that most students were forced to give up eating it. This was a slightly extreme case but it highlights what the problem is. Students don’t expect excellent cuisine like in a hotel. We just need food which is nutritious and good to eat. So we ask Ourhome to make food using conventional recipes which are focused on flavor. Second, the menu is a little repetitive. Some dishes such as bulgogi are repeated too frequently. Maybe there is no nutritional problem posed by a repetitive menu, but students are easily fed up with the same food. If this is not a too unreasonable request, please diversify the menu and don’t repeat the same dish in a week. The quality of school meals is important for students to stay in school. We stay in school longer than when we were middle school students. Actually, the time that we stay and study in school is longer than we stay at home. So, most

14

students have to eat school meals twice a day(three times a day for students who live in the dormitory). This is why the school meal should be better than now. Every student has felt the falling-off in the flavor of the school meals so they sometimes choose to eat out although they have already paid for the school meals. Students are not the only ones who think that there is a problem with the school meals. Some teachers in school have agreed about the falling-off in the school meals and parents have found it, too. Some parents have organized a group to inspect the quality of the school meals. They sometimes visit the cafeteria and check the school meal. Thanks to parents, the school meals have improved and the catering service are trying to improve its quality. The catering service rearranged the structure of the cafeteria so that students don’t have to wait too long to get their meal. Before the change, people were jammed up in the cafeteria, to get their food. Now, the flavor of the school meal has improved, too. It’s much better in comparison with before. As I said, the school meal is very important for students. Fortunately, the quality has improved a lot after students and parents’ complaints and requests. We thank Ourhome for endeavoring to improve food and really wish Ourhome to be “Our Home” to provide students with good food.

13 Do You Feel It? by Soung Seunghyun

Hello, everybody. Though last summer was extremely hot and sweltering, the DAEIL students attended school almost every day during summer vacation. Recently, the school restarted and students will be busy studying again. Maybe, some of you didn’t recognize some changes at DAEIL because you were so busy. For those who didn’t feel the changes at DAEIL, we, THE DAEIL PRESS will keep you posted on the changes. Feel and enjoy them!!

Casual Uniform If you walk around the school, you may recognize a big difference in students’ clothes. The casual uniform was recently introduced to the first and second year students. Actually, the casual uniform was permitted only for the third year students until 2009. Even though the casual uniform might seem so casual, it’s a regular school uniform. So students can go to school or come home in it. Meanwhile, there are a few differences between the casual uniform and the existing formal uniform. First of all, the design of the casual uniform is much simpler than the existing formal one. It is a T-shirt with collars and has much less buttons than the existing one. It is also cheaper, that is, the casual uniform’s price is only two-thirds of the existing one. Moreover, it’s time-saving. It takes us much less time to put the casual uniform on and take it off. Many students are pleased to wear the casual uniform.

Saxophone This year, there was such a big change in music classes for the first year students. Thanks to the enthusiastic music teacher, we started to learn saxophone from the first semester. The music teacher, Mr. Um claimed to teach students saxophone because he thought that music class should help students enjoy culture rather than having them practice the bamboo vertical flute only to get a grade. He constantly insisted that he would teach saxophone and the school finally accepted his proposal. Give him a big applause! The school provided students with the chance to be familiar with the saxophone. For instance, we watched a saxophone ensemble at Seo-Kyeong University. The ensemble interested students a lot. We have been learning to play some pieces of music in music class such as “Swan(Le Cygne)”, “Hymne A La Joie”. A few students rendered a beautiful version of “Hymne A La Joie” at DAEIL’s festival. It was very impressive. Learning saxophone in music class is still an implausible idea in other schools. Most students are satisfied with this class and passionate to learn the saxophone. Meanwhile, the music teacher has his own buzzword “enbusheo”, which means how to blow the mouthpiece. He keeps repeating this word because he always wanted to emphasize the importance of how to blow the mouthpiece.

Cafeteria Most of you probably recognized the structural change in the school cafeteria during summer vacation. Before the change, people were jammed up in the cafeteria to get meals. It was so congested that it looked like a traffic jam. Thanks to the change, we don’t have to wait so long in the cafeteria.

14 Cheer Up!

D-100 Event for the College Scholastic Ability Test 2011 by Ko Ara

In November, there is one of the biggest tests held in Korea annually. This year, over 700,000 people applied for this exam. This is a significant event which can determine one’s future life. You can probably figure out what it is. The answer is the College Scholastic Ability Test. High school students in Korea put all their effort into getting a high score on that test. It is no exaggeration to say that Korean students have studied over a decade in order to perform to the limit of their own capabilities. Seniors of Daeil Foreign Language High School, especially, have been trying their best as well. Thus, in order to cheer them up, first and second year students held the CSAT D-100 event. In advance, all club members had written messages of support in small notebooks and decorated the pages with drawings. We also bought small gifts for our club seniors which they would need while they’re studying. PRESS members prepared ice tea, big cushions and Kitty-shaped fans. On August 10th, we delivered everything we had prepared. The highlight of the event was when third grade students blew out candles after listening to their juniors singing. Some clubs had also prepared a short performance in order to give pleasure to their seniors. Drama Club members, for example, danced to the song by Orange Caramel. On the same day, there was another CSAT D-100 event held separately among D-Dorm students in the reading room for female students. Teachers and junior students decorated the blackboard with balloons and a banner. Third graders also received words of encouragement from the younger students. However, they couldn’t watch videos from first graders due to technical reasons. The freshmen had produced several videos by themselves. They intended to send the message that all effort will be rewarded in the end. It was a shame that they couldn’t show their videos. The major purpose of the CSAT D-100 event was to encourage third graders. However, it was worth more than that because it also helped Daeil students have a closer relationship with one another.

VOLS Interview with Chae Jieun

VOLS is the abbreviation for “Voice of Logical Soul”. This club represents DFLHS’s debates about current issues. This club meets once a month and debates about current issues. Actually, we debate other issues that are not necessarily current issues. As we are the issue-debating club, students who want to enter a social-science university can get merits. Also, it can be a good spec even if it is not a Social-Science Univ that you are going to enter. So you can cover a lot of fields, become cultured, and learn basic knowledge. Above all things, you can have an opportunity to enjoy the essence of debating. All you need to have is the ability to speak. But your statement should make a point and add up. Also, it is important to show your opinions confidently. But these aspects can be learned and filled with VOLS.

CRO is the abbreviation for “Contemporary Review Organization”. It is the club that debates about current issues. This club using free study hours meets with each other regularly and discusses current issues in depth. At the end of the year, we publish a collection of works based on our records. Club members can cultivate the power of understanding, learn background knowledge, and diversify their point of view to see problems. Also, we can prepare for debating interviews, be ready for essays, cultivate reasoning skills and creativity, and it’s helpful for improving oral expression skills. We estiamte reasoning skills, freshness, ability to handle problems, confidence, attitude and personality, and so on.

YUPAD Interview with Jung Dameun

YUPAD is the Youth Political Science and Diplomacy Alliance club. After the foundation, we join up with many other schools including 5 foreign-language high schools of Seoul: Hankuk Academy of Foreign Studies (용인외고), Sangsan High School, and Hanil High school. Currently, over 30 schools are joined. The work of YUPAD is divided into two. The first one is school activities and the other one is national activities. School activities are separated into personal activities and group activities. Each member clips some articles about political science and diplomacy, writes their own opinions about articles and posts on the Internet cafe. For group activities, we decide one country and do research about the government system and current issues of the country. Using this information, we write reports and make a presentation. For national activities, we attend the General Assembly and hear celebrities speak, such as UN Ambassadors. This club can interact freely with various students that are interested in Political Science and Diplomacy because it is based on national unity. Also, we publishes a booklet once a year on a national scale. Because all the activities are recorded in each school, it can be helpful to enter University. To be a member of YUPAD, above all things you should pay steady attention to Political Science and Diplomacy. We also select students who are active and have a very strong will to work sincerely. The YUPAD’s doors are open wide to anyone who has a defining purpose about his/her future.

BUSINOMY Interview with Jung Yuhee

BUSINOMY is the abbreviation for “Business & Economy”. This club is trying to embody economic analysis through our own observations. This club studies economics through regular meetings, and also aims to do well on the TESAT. And as the member of UHEC(United High School Economy), we attend regular meetings with other school members across the nation and publish ‘Ecoteen’ once a term. We offers an opportunity for practical activities like voluntary education, the publication of issue and debating over the economy. Also members can make a relationship with other school students interested in economics. We are seeking members who are enthusiastic about the economy and enjoy doing creative activities. We do not require any great depth of knowledge. You can improve those things with BUSINOMY.

DMUN Interview with Gil Hyejin

DMUN is the abbreviation for “Daeil Model United Nations”. The members of this club who are interested in participating in MUN attend a mock UN general assembly. We take the role of a delegate from every country at MUN and discuss recent international issues. We analyze the issues with a critical eye and each student expresses his/her position as the delegate of each country. All participants try to find a solution that can handle international concerns through diplomacy and negotiation. That is, we participate in the educational activities that students of various backgrounds can experience, a direct decision-making process, and the diplomatic working of the UN. As we participate in MUN, we can develop interest in international or domestic issues, broaden our thinking ability and understand the international flow of issues. Also, as we have to deduct a resolution through the process of combining the opinions of every country, it can be helpful for students who want to work in diplomatic fields. Your English speaking ability can improve, too! We recruit a person who is interested in the international issues and able to express clearly their own opinion in English. The interview will be in English and we ask students their opinion of social issues.

18

Interview with Yoo Jaeyoung

VANK is the abbreviation for “Voluntary Agency Network of Korea”. So, we are called “the cyber diplomacy delegation”. Now at VANK, students and adults are participating as cyber diplomats. VANK at our school is divided into 4 derpartments. There is the department of mistake-corrections, international friendship, Korea promotion, and International Press Translation. The activity of VANK is mostly comprised of outside works. Promoting Korea and correcting mistakes about Korea are typical examples. From these activities, our skills in foreign languages improve. When you enter a university, the activities of VANK will be helpful to enter the Department of Political Science and Diplomacy, Languages, History, and Geography. When doing the activities of VANK, we can feel interested and love Korea and feel great when Korea’s position enhances. Also, we can have wider sights and ambitions as we make a change with people of various countries. There is no standard to be a member of VANK. Anyone can apply for VANK. But we examine how much you are interested in Korea and if you become a member of VANK, how hard you will work in the role of a cyber diplomat. Everyone who loves our country can be a member of VANK. Make your dream come true with VANK!

SCHOOL NEWS - 2010 THE DAEIL PRESS

16 Teaching Practice by Oh Minju Teaching practice involves university students who want to be teachers, participating in teaching students in a particular school for a short term (about 1 month). Like this, some student teachers selected Daeil Foreign Language High School in which they can have the chance to teach students. They were around 20 student teachers. They joined us for a very short time. The teaching practice program lasted from April 5th to May 1st. There was a midterm test from April 26th to April 30th. Even though it was a very short time, both the student teachers and the students had a good time. The student teachers listened to Daeil teacher’s

lectures and taught students themselves. They prepared the classes very well, and taught very well. Throughout this process, they learned teaching skills. When the student teachers left Daeil school, each class made a small gift for them. We made rolling papers and decorated the classrooms. They were impressed by these events. Also they made small gifts for their students. On the last day with them, we took a picture for keeping the memories. For a month with them, we had a very special time. And the memories with them, we keep in our heart forever.

17 Carpe Diem

- Learning How to Seize the Day by Kim Jihyun This was the 8th year of the DELP in Canada program. All the students stayed in Coquitlam with their homestay families for 3 weeks. During those days, students studied in Pinetree Secondary School. On the first day, they had a test for evaluating each students’ English level. They were divided into 5 classes, and all the classes were keyed to the need of each student. They had not only grammar, vocabulary, reading classes, but also other interesting classes such as drama and computer class. After class, every day, they participated in various activities such as lacrosse and European handball. They also visited many famous places like Capilano Suspension Bridge, Victoria, and Whistler. Each student made precious, priceless memories. The thing which greeted me first when I arrived in Canada was the beautiful sky. White houses, green trees, and the peaceful lake… all the things I’d dreamed about were becoming a reality. The school life in Canada was really fun, as I expected. Especially our homeroom teacher, Mr. Radic was the most famous and most fun teacher in Pinetree School. He always made us laugh and treated us from his heart. Most of all, he always tried to teach us how to enjoy the day. I really envied Canadian students’ school life. They have so many activities to enjoy after the class. It looked like

they have more opportunities for developing their own aptitudes. In contrast to Korean students, Canadian students get many chances to find their personal abilities. In Korea all educational systems are aimed at entering specific universities so most students only study hard to get accepted by prestigious universities, not to reach their dreams. I’d never played so many sports in my life. We played different sports every day. At first, because of the scorching temperature, students didn’t show an enthusiastic attitude. But once the game started, it soon became a war. Everyone was sweating buckets by the end of the game. Actually, on the last day of school, all the teachers spoke highly of our enthusiastic attitude. We also visited many famous places such as Stanley Park, Capilano Suspension Bridge, Victoria, and Whistler. We could always enjoy the beauty of nature. I was surprised at their clean environment. Canadians really love nature and always try hard to preserve its beauty. Of course, if I stayed in Korea during the vacation, I could improve other subjects more. And actually, in Korea, lots of homework was waiting for me. But I don’t regret my decision to go to Canada because I learned so many valuable things.

1 8 Visiting ‘Goethe-Institut’ by Kim Joonyoung

On the 22nd day of July, all of the students of the German major class went to the Goethe Institute, an institution of German language. It is located on the 5th floor of Seoul Square building. The Goethe Institute is the place which teaches students about German language and guides them in the right direction to be successful in that field. It is a little bit similar to a private academy. When the students arrived, two German teachers came to greet them, and they prepared for the presentation. The presentation was mainly about culture of Germany, like food, sports, clothes, famous places and so on. They also explained briefly about the history of the German division and showed the Brandenburg Gate, the emblem of unity of German. In the next program, teachers divided students into two groups. One team watched a movie while the other team read books in the library. They did this work in an alternate way. When one team finished watching, the other team took their place and watched the movie. The team which

finished watching went to the library and read books. The movie was, of course, a German movie. Prior to watching it, the teacher suggested deducing with some pictures about the events that take place in the movie. Students followed the direction and next, they watched the movie without subtitles. Although they didn’t understand perfectly what characters were talking about, they could assume what was going on based on the reasoning they did before watching. The library is about German too. The librarian informed us of the instructions and let students read books. While browsing, they selected the books and read them. Some students read magazines. Many students felt strange while reading German books, since it is very hard for them to understand. Through these activities, students got useful common sense and found more concrete reasons why they have to learn German. They realized Germany is more than just a European country.

The Korean Studies Workshop program is the annual special occasion that is held by the KUGSIS(Korea University Graduate School of International Studies) and the KF(Korea Foundation). This year, on July 9, 35 teachers and educators from the U.S.A visited Korea and our school. Student guides gathered together at 2 o’clock with posters to welcome their visitors. After taking pictures together, they looked around our school. And at Dasan hall, 2 of our school student representatives gave

a presentation about our school and education curriculum. Also, the visitors gave lessons about the U.S.A to first and second year students. The visitors prepared some souvenirs, so gave those out to students. Afterward, they visited their guide’s home and ate dinner together and learned about Korean culture. All the visitors from the U.S.A. had a great time in Korea and it was also a great chance for Daeil students and teachers.

Catch the Opportunity

Park with his hom estay brothers

to Stay in Germany by Lee Subin In March, 2010, the German Embassy in Korea informed the public about a program to encourage students who had been studying German. The purpose of this program was to provide an opportunity for students who were good at German, from about 90 countries, to stay in Germany for a month. The German Department of Foreign Affairs covered all the expenses of this program. To apply for this opportunity, he or she should be a high school student and live in Korea. Also, the maximum number of applicants from each school were 5. Application process was like this : first, all applicants should have a written test at the German Culture Center. After that, the superior students who were selected through the test took an oral examination. The result of the examination was announced in May. Only 4 members could seize the chance to stay in Germany for free. Proudly, our school’s student, Park Seongmin(20325), got the opportunity by passing the tests. It was not that surprising because he had already been known for his great ability in German among his friends. Before he entered high school, he had a pen-pal who was a German. From then, he became interested in Germany and studied German by himself. The program was from August 14th to September 13th. For a month, he experienced many things that could be never forgotten. He stayed in Bonn for 5 days, in Berlin for 5 days, in Munich for 5 days and for two weeks in Pinneberg, another German city. He experienced German culture; he ate bread for every breakfast and dinner, learned about German modern music and radio systems, visited museums, and so on. In addition, he met his homestay family and lived with them for two weeks. He said that they were so kind and friendly that he could never forget them. He also said, “it was my first visit to Germany and it left me many unforgettable memories. I could learn about German culture as well as the German language. I think Germany is worth visiting. Now, I really want to return there. I am missing all the things that I had experienced.” Park has been considering entering university in Germany. He plans to prepare for a German language examination. His experiences for a month in the program will be helpful when he tries to make his dream come true.

2 1 First Year Spanish Dept. Students

Visit Latin American Cultural Center by Lee Inah

On July 23rd, 1st year students in the spanish department gathered in front of the main gate of our school. There were two buses for classes 1-9 and 1-10, which were bound for the Latin American Cultural Center. As soon as all the students got on, the buses departed. On the bus, many students in class 9 enjoyed talking and playing. After about one hour, we arrived at the center. It was not as big as we expected, but looked antique. Soon after opening, the students entered the museum and art gallery in two groups. In the museum, there were more than 300 artifacts of the Maya, Aztec and Inca. There are 5 exhibit halls including 1,2,3,4 halls and a central room. At first, we could see the Spanish Fountain, a Steinway piano, the sun of Aztec, and Chinese and Mexican china in the central hall. The sun hanging from the ceiling was especially impressive. There were various kinds of earthenwares in exhibit hall 1. For example, there were earthenwares of the natives, which represent the fruitfulness of the Mayan people and their gods. All of them were very delicate and cute. In the 2nd exhibit hall, There were some artifacts which were used by the natives in their daily life such as a belt which protected them from the cold, ‘metate’ which was used for making tortillas, a table made of jade and a mortar. We were able to imagine ancient civilized men’s daily life from the artifacts. The most interesting hall was located on the 3rd floor. There were many kinds of masks there. The masks of funny faces, animals and

22

monsters were displayed. The most impressive mask was the one which represented human’s life, death and sickness. It was well made but a little bit terrifying. There were tools for ancestral rites in hall 4. ‘The tree of life’ and ‘The stone of the sun’ artifacts were especially delicate and vivid. After we looked around at everything, we moved to the art gallery. In the gallery, there were a lot of pictures with vivid colors. However, despite their vivid description, they looked somewhat gloomy. I thought that’s because the history of the people might be fed into pictures. Also, there were some sculptures of the latin people. Many sculptures depict people dancing. Also, there were some sculptures of fat and curvy people. Because we had some time before lunch, we decided to look around the sculpture garden. All sculptures were realistic, delicate and artistic. My friends and I took photos in front of some sculptures. After looking around at all of the artifacts and sculptures, we eventually went to the restaurant in two groups. Some students ate tacos, and the others ate paella. Both dishes were great and we were able to understand latin culture better through the experience. It was a great experience to feel and understand the latin culture. And it was still more meaningful because we are learning Spanish. I hope to visit Latin America some day.

Daeil Debate Championship by In Hoyeon

DDC, which stands for Daeil Debate Championship, is a debate competition held by LOGOS, the only official English debate club in Daeil. DDC is considered a very special debate competition because of its form where participants get the topic 30 minutes before the debate starts. The debate topics given in the competition range from social problems to everyday issues. Participants form groups of three and each member of the team has a certain duty. First of all, the government team is made up of the Prime Minister, the Deputy Prime Minister, and the government Whip. The opposition team is made up of the Leader of the Opposition, the Deputy Leader of the Opposition and the Opposition Whip. First, groups compete four times with random teams and the top four groups qualify for the semifinal. Students can watch the debate by the semi-finalists, which is another special advantage of DDC. And two groups finally go to the final where the debate topic is given in advance, which is called the ‘preparation round.’ The 2010 DDC was held successfully. The last two groups in the final competition were the group of Heo Dowon, Won Kyeonghun, and Kang Sangwoo and the group of Kang Minyeong, Lee Hyo jeong, and Kim Jihyun. Each debater gave a great speech and appealed to both the judges and the audience. The observation board of Logos gave a judgement on which group the winner was. There were five

judges. The group of Heo, Won and Kang won by score of 3:2. After all debates were finshed, Winners and best speakers got prizes. The group which won in the final got the most honorable award, the winning team award and 10 best speakers received the best speakers. Kang Minyeong was awarded the first best speaker award, and interestingly, one of the first year students named Park Woojeong got the fourth best speaker award, which surprised everyone. I also participated in DDC, did four debates and watched the semi-final and the final. As a participant, I certainly can say that it was a precious experience which helped my English speaking skills improve and helped me know about the English debate. The most impressive aspect that I experienced in DDC was the way the seniors debate in such fluent English. Speakers such as Heo Dowon, Kang Sangwoo, and Kang Minyeong gave an impressive speech that persuaded the audience as well as the judges. All the participants learned both debate and English speaking skills from them. DDC has become a great part of Daeil’s special occasion. It has provided the great opportunity to debate and enables students to improve their English debating skills. Furthermore, DDC has designed a new form of debate for the better. It will surely continue to play important role as the best debate competition at Daeil.

The second 2010 Daeil Debate Championship was held by LOGOS at D-Dorm from November 25th to November 26th. Logos OBs and english teachers assisted debates as judges.

23 INTERVIEWS Interview

with WPC Champion, Lee Youngchan by Ryu Jieun

On May 24th, Daeil’s fourth WPC in 2010 was held. WPC stands for Word Power Championship. It is held once a semester. The first and second grade students attend this contest and among them, the students who get good grades are supposed to be rewarded with a prize. This semester, the winner of the 4th WPC was a second year student named Lee Youngchan. The Daeil PRESS interviewed him. Q) W hat is your special know-how for studying for the WPC? A) Actually, I prepared for the WPC for about 3 weeks. This year I started to study the WPC book after the mid-term exam. I usually studied it at break time, lunch time and on the school bus. I focused not only just on words but also examples related to the words. Studying the examples was very important because they were given in the examination. You don’t need to memorize them but just keep repeating them. In addition, the word quiz with friends was a helpful way to study for the WPC. Q) D o you think the WPC is useful for improving your English skills? A) Of course it is. Studying WPC words is good for the College Scholastic Ability Test and also useful for TEPS. My vocabulary score of TEPS improved by preparing for WPC. The level of the words in this book is appropriate for Daeillites,

24

I think. However, sometimes there are a few unnecessary and unessential words. You don’t need to concentrate on those words but just look through them.

Q) Give a piece of advice to Daeil students who want to be a winner of WPC. A) I know that many students believe WPC is needless to improve English skills. However, the words in WPC books are useful and important. You don’t need to spend a lot of time for studying WPC. Just use your break time. Actually, the quantity of words you have to study is not enormous. Challenge yourself to be a winner of the WPC! You can do it! Q) Can you make a sentence with WPC which can motivate Daeil students to study hard? A) W : What makes you hesitate to try? P : Possibility of failure? C : Challenge yourself and you will make it!

Interview: Lauren Schultz by Lee Donghyung

This year, We have new English native-speaking teachers. And today, I interviewed Lauren, one of our new teachers.

Self-Introduction, please. My name is Lauren Schultz. I grew up in a town called Peterborough which is located in the province of Ontario in Canada. It’s tiny compared to Seoul, with only about 75,000 people, but it’s a lovely place with lots of lakes and rivers and forests all around. I majored in English Literature in university, and I have been teaching English for three years now. This is my second semester at Daeil. Why did you choose Daeil Foreign Language High school? There were a few reasons why I wanted to work at Daeil Foreign Language High School. First of all, this school has such an interesting atmosphere. It’s fun to work in a place where I can hear people speaking eight different languages every day, and where I have coworkers from a dozen different countries. Even the school building itself is interesting, constructed on so many different levels, climbing up the side of the mountain. When I came to Daeil for my job interview, I met Dr. Woo, Mr. Kim, and Ms. Joon Kim. They were so kind and understanding that I knew I wanted to work here. It’s really important to have good bosses and good coworkers, and I am so happy that I do. Plus, Daeil has a great reputation, so I feel quite proud when I give someone my business card and they see that I work here. People are always impressed! What do you think of our students? I like Daeil students so much. They are smart and dedicated. They ask interesting questions; I learn even as I am teaching. I really enjoy having conversations with students in class and in the hallways. I even enjoy just walking to the cafeteria, and hearing the sounds of the rock band practicing from one of the upstairs windows or seeing students playing basketball outside. As I said, the school atmosphere is great. I had a great time attending the special events last semester, which show a different side of Daeil students. The team spirit at Daeil Hanmadang was really exciting, and the Daeil Festival was a wonderful showcase of Daeil’s artistic talent in music, drama, dance, photography, and drawing. The students here are usually kind and polite to their teachers. But even if they are badly behaved or lazy once in a while, they are usually funny at the same time, so it’s hard to be angry. Most often I just want to laugh instead. What do you want to say to our students? What I’d like to say to Daeil students is that you have all of the gifts and

talents that you need to succeed in life. Keep studying hard and doing your best, but once you have done your best, relax. Please, don’t worry about the future. Worrying will not change anything. Don’t let yourself be overwhelmed by stress. Take time to enjoy life and friendship and being young. It’s more important to be happy than to be perfect.

Why are you so interested in Korea? And how about life in Korea? The first time I started to be really interested in Korean culture was in 2006, when I saw two Korean movies on an airplane: The Beast and the Beauty with Ryu Seungbeom and Shin Min-a and The Art of Seduction with Son Yejin and Song Il-gook. They were just romantic comedies, but the characters seemed so different from the ones in American movies. I couldn’t understand them at all—why they acted the way they did, what their motivations were, or what they were thinking. That made me really curious. At the time, I didn’t know that I would move to Korea one year later. There were a few other things that made me curious about Korean culture: I had heard about North and South Korea in the news. I had some Korean-Canadian friends in high school and university. Also, my grandfather fought in the Korean War in the 1950s, and he and my grandmother visited Korea again in the 1980s. So I felt like to really understand my grandfather and my family history, I should learn about Korea. So when I had the chance to move to Korea to teach English after I graduated from university, I decided to go for it. When I came to Korea in 2007, I couldn’t read hangeul, I could barely use chopsticks...I didn’t know much. But I really wanted to learn. Living in Korea was almost like putting together a puzzle—it was fun, but difficult to see how all the pieces fit together. Seoul is also a huge, modern city, much bigger than where I grew up. I remember the first time I rode the bus in Kangnam and look out the window. I thought every woman walking by on the sidewalk looked like she was in a fashion show! After a year of living in Korea, I went home to Canada, but I couldn’t stop thinking about Korea. I told my friends about my favourite parts of Korean life. I missed living in a house with a cozy ondol in winter time I don’t know how long I will stay here, but since I got back, I’ve tried even harder to learn about Korean language and culture. That way, no matter where I go, I will leave a piece of my heart in Korea, but I will also carry a piece of Korea with me in my heart.

Interview with Cat Whitehouse by Kim Seungje

Would you like to introduce yourself to DFLHS students?

My pleasure! I’m Cat Whitehouse and I’m from London, England. I’ve been living in Korea for just over one year now.

Would you like to introduce England to DFLHS students?

I’d rather introduce London, as I feel more like a “Londoner” than simply an “English person”. Well, I’m totally biased but London is an awesome city. There is so much history and amazing architecture, it’s multicultural and there are galore parks and museums! I miss walking by the Thames at night, meeting friends in Chinatown for dim sum, and checking out the latest exhibition at the Tate Modern. Oh, I should dispell some myths: It isn’t always foggy (in fact I have probably only seen a fog a handful of times!). Also, it isn’t always raining (although I do always carry an umbrella, even if it’s sunny... just in case), and we don’t just eat fish and chips!!!!!!!!!!!!

Why did you come to Korea and teach English Conversation?

Hmm, well in the UK I attended the School of Oriental and African Studies, a very unique university that specializes in Asia and Africa. Although I majored in Vietnamese, I made friends who were studying Korean, and through them I learned some things about Korea - the language, culture, music, food etc. I fell in love with the language and had already decided to move to Asia after graduating, so I ended up choosing Seoul! I already had many Korean friends before I came here, so I felt comfortable here from the first day I arrived ^^~

What do you think about DFLHS?

The atmosphere here is wonderful... the school has a great reputation and it’s deserved. As somebody who loves learning foreign languages, the academic environment here is very stimulating. Also, although I can’t say I enjoy the trek up and down the mountain each day, the view from my classroom is awesome!

26

What do you think about DFLHS students?

Honestly, from day one, I’ve been so impressed by the students because of not only their academic ability and motivation, but also their general attitudes - polite, curious, funny and a bit cheeky sometimes.

What do you want to say to DFLHS students?

I want to encourage them to always act on their dreams and stay focused. Don’t waste your time on trivialities or on simply talking and thinking about what’s really important to you. Take action! How you spend your time says it all.

What do you like to do when you’re free?

I love learning languages (currently I’m still learning Korean, Vietnamese and French) so often you can find me in a cafe around Hongdae, drinking coffee and studying. I also enjoy reading, one of my favorite authors is Haruki Murakami. Also I love going to art galleries and jazz clubs and taking photographs. Finally, I really enjoy listening to music so you’ll always see me wandering around with my headphones in.

We want to know about your future dream.

I want to go to university in Seoul to study Korean. And I would love to live in Vietnam again, in Hanoi, if I ever have the chance, just for a little while.

Interview: French Teacher

Jean-Baptiste Berman by Nam Seokjin

Q) Could you introduce yourself to the Daeil Students? A) Bonjour ! My name is Jean-Baptiste Berman but you can just call me Jean. I come from Lyon in the South-East part of France and I arrived in Korea in February 2008. I am 27 and I am married to a Korean woman. I majored in Business Management Studies in France (Lyon) and in England (London). I attended the Korean Language Program at Seoul National University and I worked for a French academy in Seoul. In February 2010 I became a teacher at Daeil. Q) What made you come to Korea/Daeil? A) It all started in England. I met many foreigners during my Business training there, and that was the first time I met Korean people. In our group of friends, I was especially getting along with a Korean girl. We got close to each other and finally we started to date. I found out a lot about Korea and Korean at that time. After the program was finished, I decided to go to Korea. And there, I found about Daeil because I taught some of the Daeil students at the French academy. Daeil students were brilliant so they gave me a really good impression of the school. Then one day, I found a job opening at Daeil and here I am! Q) Did you always want to be a French teacher? How did you decide to be a French teacher in Korea? A) The idea of being a teacher never reached me before coming to Korea. In 2008, I started teaching one to one while I was studying Korean. The contact with students was really good and sharing my language and culture with them was always a real pleasure. From the beginning I liked many aspects of the work. Many of them were matching the ones I wanted to have for my professional life. For this reason I decided to become a teacher. Q) What do you like most about Korea/Daeil? A) There is a lot to say. Korea and Koreans impressed me from the beginning. The Korean way of life, the relation with others, and the culture are the three things that I like about this country the most. Being part of a photo club, I also really enjoyed travelling in Korea. Your country is really beautiful. What I like most about Daeil are my colleagues and

students – I also like very much when students greet me in the corridor and make the effort to learn a few French words.

Q) What do you think about Daeil Students? A) Daeil Students really impress me by their ability of hard working and their curiosity. In the French department this year, many students are making a remarkable work and even more. Some organized a choir, others participate in extra classes to prepare for French exams and others learn poems and interpret them with talent. I want to thank them all for being so active. Keep on doing the good work! Q) Do you enjoy being a teacher? When do you feel happy as a teacher? A) Yes, without any hesitation. Being a teacher has never been a deception. In Daeil, I can say I have never been particularly unhappy. The students are always so funny and respectful to their teacher’s work. If I should define a really happy time as a teacher, I would say it is when all the students are listening carefully, participating actively and having a good exchange during the class. Q) What are your future plans? A) Professionally, I want to develop my skills of teaching. In order to do so I started a training program to get a French Teacher Diploma. In a more remote future, I’d like very much to own an academy in Seoul. And personally, I want to keep on learning Korean to know even more about Korean people and culture. Q) Is there anything you want to say to Daeil students? A) I want to tell the students to stay strong and face discouragement. Do not doubt your abilities. You will always find the help you need and the answers to achieve your goals or your dreams. Believing in yourself and trusting others is the key. If you can do great things alone you can do even more with a partner. Today you are learning a foreign language which is a difficult task because it requires time, energy and practice. Take the time, gather the energy, allow the practice and never give up without a fight! Way to go !

Interview: with Chinese Conversation Teacher,

Hwang Sunhee

by Kim Changyun / Hahn Dongho

When did you come to Korea and Daeil Foreign Language High school? And what was the occasion? Actually, I had taught Chinese students in a Chinese high school before. In August 1998, I got out from it and continued teaching in Korea. I started working for Deail FLHS in March 2003. At that time, my boy friend was working in Korea, and Chinese was a trendy language here. That’s why I decided to come here.

What were your hardships or obstacles when you first came to Korea? 我刚来韩国的时候韩国语说得不太好,所以在普通高中上课的时候经常闹笑话,弄得我很尴尬。 When I first came to Korea, I didn’t speak Korean very well. This led me to making many mistakes in average-Korean high schools, and I was totally embarrassed.

What do you think Daeil students’ characteristics are? - The students are very talented in every area and express themselves well. - They are enthusiastic and courteous. - Their studying atmosphere is very good, and they set their objectives in order to study. - Their studying activities are various and fantastic. They use their remaining time wisely including participating in many extracurricular contests. - They compete fiercely although they have much stress.

There are many students who prepare for the HSK(Chinese Proficiency Test). Could you give them some advice? - 多掌握词汇; 一有时间就看看<HSK短语王>中的单词。 - 多听听MP3; 下载HSK听力反复听听。 - 多看看HSK书上的单词和惯用语。 - 多看看HSK语法书上的量词和连词。 - Conquer as much vocabulary as possible : they should study vocab books such as <HSK Voca King>. - Listen to MP3 files : download HSK listening files and listen to them as often as possible. - Study voca and idioms from HSK textbooks. - Study conjunctions and counting measures from HSK textbooks.

Lastly, give some advice to Daeil students. 希望趁年轻该学习的时候就全力以赴地学习,该玩儿的时候就尽情地学习,多留下美好的回忆,省得以后后悔。 Use your youth as an opportunity, and do your best when you have to study. But, when you want to play, play enthusiastically and make great memories. And avoid doing something that you will regret later.

¡Hola! Me llamo Antonio. by Lee Inah

What made you decide to come to Korea? I wanted to visit Korea during the Seoul Olympic Games. I was here in 1988. I liked Korean culture and people, so I decided to teach Spanish here. Did you want to be a Spanish teacher from past? Or what was your original dream? When I was young, I had a lot of dreams. I liked science, literature and math. Through the years, I studied many things including teaching Spanish as a second language. Please introduce your country, Peru. My country, Peru, is located in South America. It has three distinct regions: The Coast, The Andes and the rain forest. Peru is home of the Incan Empire, the Incan Citadel of Machupicchu and the astrological Nazca lines. Also, it is the home of the Amazon River and exuberant vegetation. It has lots of traditions and a great cultural heritage. What do you like or dislike about Korea? What I like about Korea is the kindness of Korean people and its culture. Also, it’s a safe place to live in. What I dislike about Korea is traffic jams. That’s it. Have you had any funny episode while living in Korea? One day, I went to a restaurant with my friend. I was talking with him in Spanish. And there was a Korean student trying to understand what we were talking about. After 5 minutes, he came to our table, and said “I have been studying English for more than 5 years, but I can understand anything that you’re talking about.” Which team did you cheer for in the World Cup? I cheered for Spain, Korea, Argentina, Brazil and other South American teams. What do you think about your students? They are wonderful, smart and ambitious in their studies. Everybody wants to be the best. I like this attitude a lot and I enjoy teaching them. Who is the most interesting student you’ve taught? It’s hard to mention one, because I have many interesting students who always make my classes fun. Is there anything you want to advise students who are learning a foreign language? To learn a foreign language, it is necessary to practice it frequently and use it in any situation without fear to commit mistakes. Please say goodbye in Spanish. ¡Adiós!

Interview with Nam Hyosoon, Who is a Professor in the School of Law at SNU by Kang Jueun / Nam Seokjin / Lee Jooyeon

Introduction

Nam Hyosoon Bachelor’s degree in law from Seoul National University Master’s degree in law from Seoul National University Doctoral degree in law from Nancy 2 University(France) Professor at the College of Law and Law School, Seoul National University Member of the Ministry of Justice’s Committee for the Revision of the Civil Law

Q) What is the most essential qualification as a person who deals with the law? Well, there are 4 kinds of people who deal with the law such as a lawyer, a jurist, a judge, a prosecutor. I think the most important and common qualification is ‘fairness and impartiality’. But be warned, there is no fixed standard. Depending on the time and the place, people’s perception of fairness and impartiality can differ. So we must look for the standard according to the time and the place. The second most important quality is having an open mind.

entering law school. This is the aim of law school. The traditional way was after passing the bar exam, students went to the Judicial Research and Training Institute and according to their entrance and graduation grades, they were divided into judge, prosecutor, and lawyer. If not, some people used to get a degree from the department of law and become a jurist. But now, after graduating from law school, students take the bar exam(It’s different from the traditional bar exam. It’s for becoming lawyer.) Amid successful candidates, the judges and prosecutors are selected. Besides, not every student who graduates from law school becomes a judge, a prosecutor, or a lawyer. Excluding the 60 to 70% of students, many enter business, journalism or become chief executive officer. There are many jobs to choose from and there is no determined path. It is up to you to choose your own path.

Q) Is any basic knowledge required before studying law? There is no special knowledge required. However students should acquire extensive knowledge because theory alone is useless when it is related to applying the law. So when studying something, read and learn as much as you can.

Q) There are many students who want to enter ‘law school’. Could you give them a piece of advice? Well, up to now, opportunity was given only for students who are studying in the law department. However, because ‘law school’ has been created, the opportunity to study law is now available to all the students from various departments. Of course, not all universities have a ‘law school’ so there will be some students who will go to the department of law in another university. As I mentioned, when studying law, it is important to study various fields. Even if you memorize all the legal provisions, without expertise, it is impossible to applying these to real situation. therefore, students should have a strong background in their specialized field before

Q) What do you think is the definition of law? I think that law is making and enforcing the rules that help people to live happily and fairly. It is similar to the rules of a sports game. With laws, all the athletes could participate in the game with good grace. It’s the same logic. Also, as I mentioned, the standard of law varies depending on time and place. The most basic concept is that the law is for maintaining public order and people’s well-being. However the social value is different according to the era. so a social agreement is needed. In the world, there are diverse perspectives over one issue. So we consider the most common and effective value as a standard of the law. Finally, there are many people who think the law is far from our real life. However, I want to emphasize the fact that it is closely related to our dayto-day lives.

Q) Many people say that law school is a system for the rich. What do you think about this? Back in the day, if you were a top student, you could enter the School of Law. But nowadays, tuition costs are in the range of 8 ~ 15 million won per semester. It costs 100 million won a year. So only the rich tend to enter law school. However, the College of Medicine has been costly from the beginning. If you make it in the legal profession, you can get back the money that you spent to enter the legal profession. Also, you can get a loan or scholarship for expenses. But this is not to say that all people can succeed in the legal profession. So you have to choose and decide for yourself.

Q) What do you think about the famous saying ‘A law is a law, however undesirable it may be’? When a law is enacted, there are always some advantages that it wants to preserve. The problem arises when ‘the advantages’ are beneficial only to a few people instead of the whole nation. However, even though a law may be undesirable, it was enacted by following the proper procedure. Therefore, people should first observe all laws, but try to abolish any undesirable law under joint agreement to realize a society of justice.

Q) What does a law school do? Universities had to abolish colleges of law in order to establish or to maintain law schools. At the time when both institutes coexisted in the same university, students learned law as a ‘pure study’ at college and then learned how the law is applied in the real life and cases. But now, both courses are included in the law school program so students can study the law intensively.

Q) Why do you like law? That’s like asking Kim Takgu, “Why do you like bread?”. I think there are few people who love their work and feel sure about it from the beginning. I just came to like what I am doing now.

Q) When do you feel happiest studying the law? When my own theory, which is different from others thoughts, is accepted, I am glad that my hard work paid off and feel like I gain recognition as a scholar and that I am ‘alive’ as a scholar myself. Also, when my work gives pleasure to people, I feel glad.

Q) The legal profession is the occupation that seeks fairness. But the lawyer often defends clients even though they committed a crime. What do you think about this? Of course a lawyer has to defend their clients, even though they did something wrong. But it is a part of the work of the lawyer. While the role of the prosecution is finding the guilt of the defendant legally, the role of the lawyer is finding the innocence of clients legally. Bad men also need somebody who can defend them because they also have a just right. So, in this sense, we have to understand the role of the lawyer.

Q) What reasons are there to enter the legal profession? First of all, the basic requirement to enter the legal profession is ability. Ability means obtaining excellent results. It wasn’t that the law is “right” for me. Also, it wasn’t that I didn’t like the law. But I enjoy the life of a professor at the School of Law. I think the most important thing is whether you enjoy your job or not.

Q) What would you like to say to DFLHS’s students? You may think that you can’t enter law school because your academic grades are not good. But if you really want to be in the legal profession, the university is not important. As you guys are the students receiving a strong education, you will glow anywhere. Only people who do their best can reach the “TOP”. Also, if you study optimistically, you will succeed.

24 Resignation of

the Prime Minister -Designate by Kang Jueun Prime minister-designate Kim Tae-ho gave up his nomination after opposing politicians hurled corruption allegations at him during two days of confirmation hearings. Kim Tae-ho, the 47-year-old former governor of South Gyeongsang, was named the prime ministerdesignate on Aug. 8 in a massive cabinet shake-up by President Lee Myung-bak as an experiment of generational change and reform. He graduated from Geochang Agriculture High School and entered Seoul National University Agricultural Alpine Association. After entering the association, he became interested in political issues. In 2002, he became a county headman in Geochang, and in 2004, he was appointed as a governor of South Gyeongsang. After he became a governor, he did many things for residents of the province. First, He tried to make South Gyeongsang into a province of green development. He worked as the chief director of South Gyeongsang Ramsar Environmental Foundation and successfully held the Ramsar General Assembly. As a local government he passed a special law about south coast development for the first time. He also tried to rehabilitate the Ibis and so on. He strove to make great developments. Finally he was appointed as a prime ministerdesignate. He officially announced that he would focus on carrying out a people-friendly policy, mentioning that he is the son of a farmer. In an interview with the media, Kim pledged to communicate with the public, and said he hopes to foster a renewed sense of optimism about the direction of the country. Kim also said he wants to be an inspiration to young Koreans. At first, he was presented as an original and clean person. But now, he is suspected of corruption. Let me

32

give you some facts about him. Firstly, it is suspected that he had been bribed by Park Yeon-cha, the convicted former head of Taekwang Industrial. Kim was accused of receiving tens of thousands of dollars from Park in April 2007, and the prosecution suspected that the bribery money changed hands at a Korean restaurant in New York City. Park gained advantage from licensing golf courses. Secondly, the Gyeongnam Geochang Sanglimli Apartment where he lives is suspected to be leased at an unreasonable price. The market value of this house is about 250 million won and the lease is also about 150 million won. But Kim is confirmed to lease this house about 10 million won. Lastly, deductions of credit cards turned out to be 0 won. His pay was 450 million won for last five years. He is suspected to hide his expenses. He is also charged with increasing his properties. His properties have grown 10 times for last 4 years. He is charged with exploiting officials to work as drivers for his wife and so on. After all, Kim gave up the prime ministership. He became the third prime minister-designate who has failed to get through the confirmation process. “I feel very sorry to the people for causing troubles and concern with my problems,” a grave-looking Kim said in a press conference .“Today I’m going to give up my nomination. I figured I should cause no more trouble to President Lee’s state affairs management.” Although Kim said he felt victimized in some ways, he said he believed his political woes stemmed from “lack of discretion.” “The most important virtue in a human being is trust,” Kim said. “What can I possibly do without the people’s trust even if I were appointed as a prime minister?”

25 Japan’s Apology for Colonization by Kim Changyun

Japan’s apology Japan made an apology for their past colonial rule. On the 100th anniversary of Japan’s coercive merger, on August 10, Japan’s Prime Minister Kan Naoto expressed “feelings of deep remorse and heartfelt apology for the tremendous damage and suffering brought by the colonial rule.” And they also promised to return our precious artifacts, e-guae (records of an ancient Korean royal dynasty) as soon as possible. Appraisal by Korean society Our administration evaluated this statement positively. They said that the statement was “a step forward” and it will be a way to better relations between two nations. After the statement, President Lee Myung-bak and Japan’s Prime Minister Kan Naoto had a telephone conference. During the telephone conference, they reached an agreement that, taking this opportunity, two countries should strengthen cooperation further. President Lee also urged proper assessment of the statement. However many parties and organizations in Korea appraised the statement a little bit negatively. Han-nara (The governing Grand National Party) said the statement was notable but it was insufficient because it did not mention the illegality of the coercive merger and the use of many Korean women as sex slaves for Japanese soldiers. Min-ju(The Korean Liberation Association) also said that the statement was disappointing and just empty words, because Japan sticks to their idea that the merger wasn’t illegal.

Appraisal by Japan society Appraisals by Japan society are also various. In political circles, negative appraisals were more frequent than positive ones. Among many parties in Japan, only two parties, Ja-min and Gong-meong, evaluated statement high. The rest of parties (those of conservative inclination) said that the statement was just self-torture diplomacy. Many politicians also expressed dissatisfactions about the statement through the media. Newspapers’ appraisals were different in inclination. Yomiuri said the statement was “future-oriented”, and Asahi said the statement will be considered as the cornerstone of Japanese-Korean cooperation. But ultraright paper Sankei said that the statement was a distortion of history. Meaning of the statement The apology was still insufficient for Koreans, because it didn’t mention the problem of comfort women, didn’t admit the merger was totally coercive, and didn’t promise any detailed action after the statement. The reactions of Japanese society were also disappointing in that some people in Japanese politics and media were still not apologetic to us. So the statement might be appraised as “empty word”. The statement also has some degree of meanings. Many statements before this were issued for many nations in Asia as a group. The current statement was the first statement published by a Japanese Prime minister only for Korea, so we can appraise this point positively.

26 How the Korean Government

Copes with the Cheonan Incident by Soung Seunghyun

The government has still not found the reason for the Cheonan sinking, which happened on May 26th. The mass media quote anonymous persons who believe that North Korea sunk the patrol ship. However they do not provide verifiable evidence. The suspicion that North Korea sunk the Cheonan will be problematic in two aspects. First, the suspicion that North Korea sunk the Cheonan is not reliable enough to persuade international society to believe the incident was really North Korea’s deed. Scientifically verifiable evidence is indispensable to get the agreement of international society about who sunk the Cheonan. Even if it proves to be North Korea’s deed, the incident is unlikely to disturb either America or China from restarting the six-party talks. As a matter of fact, China has already started to bring in North Korea back into the six-party talks by inviting Kim, Jongil to Beijing. Second, the relation between South and North Korea will worsen. It’s needless to say that examining the reason for the Cheonan sinking is an important matter. Nevertheless, the government should not let the relation of both Koreas grow worse. For that reason, the government is taking steps in the opposite direction. Recently, President Lee scolded the Korean people, saying that we Koreans are oblivious that we are ‘in a state of armistice’. Does he mean that Korean people should always be ready to get involved in a war? He strongly implied several times that North Korea was responsible for this incident without any decisive evidence proving it. It is doubtful whether he wants peace and stability for the Korean peninsula. Has the government given up its efforts to bring peace and reunification to both Koreas? In conclusion, we shouldn’t stick to the speculation that this incident was North Korea’s deed unless we can prove it and make international society believe it. Also the Korean government should take serious and long-term measures to maintain peace and stability in Korea before denouncing North Korea for the hostile act. Also we have to accept calmly that even if the incident should prove to be North Korea’s deed, international society may or may not decide to take sanctions against North Korea as much as the government wants.

27 Candlelight Vigil and Changed Attitude by Oh Minju Two years ago, there were many people in the public squares demonstrating about importing American beef because of the fear of Mad Cow Disease. We called them the “Candlelight Vigil”. What were the ‘Candlelight Vigil’? Do you know what they were exactly? First, they occurred in June 2008 against the negotiation about importing American cows. Koreans got into rage about it. So they decided to do peaceful vigils in Seoul Square. This movement led to a second negotiation, and the government decided not to import those risky cows, except for some safer parts of them. After the candlelight vigils occurred, the president of South Korea, Lee Myeongbak, offered his sincere apology to Koreans. In his statement, he first said “I was unable to understand people’s feelings and I recognize that. It is all my fault. And in a second statement, he said that from now on he communicate with people more and even try to accept the ideas of his opponents. Through his words and actions; he seemed to be apologetic and self-examining. But now he has changed his attitude. He said, “Although many apparent facts about mad cow have proved untrue no one, especially the high-class people who participated in these vigils, have changed their mind in 2 years, and now he even imputes this event not to his fault. Moreover, ministers who resigned because of the critical negotiations two years ago were reappointed soon after. People resent these actions. This time, the change seems to have happened because Lee’s political power has increased in his support rate is 50% now. Many experts say, above all, the president’s cognition is the problem. That is, two years ago, he apologized to people, but he didn’t accept the people’s demands. We can see his political goals but the projects he wants to launch: making Se-jong city and the four canals. Many people and environmentalists do not support these policies but he conducts those projects by his direction. From his recent statements, it is hard to recognize the president’s real desires. However, we have to take interest in policies, and from now on we will pay attention to his acceptance of people’s real demands and their hopes.

28 Crisis in Bangkok by Hyun Doyeop Two months of bloody street battles in Bangkok have come to an end after the red-shirted protestors surrendered to the overwhelming might of the Thai army. With the protests ending with dozens dead, it is a catastrophe for a country that seemed to be rushing towards prosperity and pluralism. The fact that the scale of the disaster has so far been contained should not deflect attention from the dangers ahead. With the stock exchange and several other treasure palaces of Thailand in flames, unrest spreading outside the capital and a curfew in effect in much of the country, it is not scaremongering to worry that civil war may ensue. The Thai government places the blame for this chaos on Thaksin Shinawatra, a former prime minister toppled in a coup, who is now in exile. In one way, it is correct that Thaksin did play a malignant role in sabotaging a

peaceful, negotiated end to the protests, and that at the very least, he did not guide his supporters, as he could have done, which may be, the “red-shirt movement” now dwarfs his individual ambition. It has rather become a wholesale response to an incapacitated political system. With so much blood spilled, the protestors will now be even less inclined to trust the government of the current prime minister, to organize a free and fair vote, and to respect its outcome. Thus, an interim government of national unity is called for, and the Thai government, currently unprepared for any pragmatic, long-term solution in response to the national crisis they have quashed with violence, should arrange means for the stabilization of the state, as the angry shouts of the protestors and the cracking of flaming bottles might be heard again in the streets of Thailand in any moment.

29 Obama’s Healthcare Reform Bill by

Lee Jungeun

“I am not the first President to take up this cause, but I am determined to be the last.”— Sept. 9, 2009, President Barack Obama Last year September, President Barack Obama appeared before Congress to state his case — again — for healthcare reform. This bold statement opened an impassioned speech, in which Obama went on to decry the number of uninsured Americans, “skyrocketing” healthcare costs and the unbearable burden placed on taxpayers. He even called the U.S. “the only advanced democracy on earth” that allows so many of its citizens to go without health care. Then in March 22, 2010, President Obama finally passed the ‘Healthcare Bill’, which was his most essential policy, in the House. It seemed impossible to be passed due to severe party strife, filibusters from the Republicans, and some inner revolts by people in the anti-abortion faction. However, in the end, this bill was passed by 219-212 votes, to be signed into law. This bill was said by some to be the same as a ‘Health Insurance Reform Bill’, and every congressman in the Republican party was negative. Also, Democratic congressman, who were in a contrary position on supporting abortion, left the party and voted against it. From that, the healthcare bill was barely passed- 3 votes over the minimum number needed to pass, 216. The close vote indicates an atmosphere of confrontation even after the healthcare bill has been passed. The Democrats celebrated the bill on three points-a historical advance of justice, an improvement to all Americans’ life quality, and the start of a new day in the United States of America. In contrast, the Republics denounced it as “shaking the nation by unbearable red ink management.”

Why did this polarization happen? We can view this problem from three perspectives. Firstly, let us see the side of people who can benefit from the new healthcare law. Out of 55 million people who do not have medical insurance, 32 million people, except illegal immigrants, can now get it by government’ support. Additionally, people whom the insurance companies do not want to cover, such as child patients, mental (psychiatric) patients, and pregnant patients, can have medical insurance like other people. Secondly, let us see the side of people who are burdened by the new healthcare law. Every employer has a duty to give their employees medical insurance. If they don’t, they must pay a fine instead. Government levies tawes of about 3.8% on personal-income-earners who earn more than $200,000 annually, couples who earn more than $250,000 yearly, and businessmen who invests in financial capital or owns real estate. Also, people who have the finest medical insurance, “Cadillac Plan”, will be taxed by the government starting in 2018. Finally, according to the new healthcare bill, the current medical business world will suffer a blow. The federal government will cut the budget of “Medicare”, which is about $400 billion, spent in hospitals, medical insurance companies and welfare centers. Instead of it, the government will maintain a budget for healthcare reform, which will cost $938 billion for the next 10 years. From these three viewpoints, we can learn that people who get benefit from the reform are low-income, and middleclass people. Furthermore, people who are burdened by reform are rich and in a higher state of living. From now on, America is not a place where only high-income people and large enterprises take priority. It has become a nation where the focus is enlarged to the whole populace. In theory, America was known as a citizens’ nation, but actually, the country was criticized because of the major enterprises and high-income special interests who determined the nation. Now, that situation seems to have been changed by Obama’s healthcare reform. The passing of the “Healthcare Reform Bill” was a bit dangerous, but the blow of renovation could be the start of something positive. It may bring new good fresh start to the United States of America.

30 Monopoly of the

Broadcasting Industry by Han Seojung The 2010 Soccer World Cup held in South Africa was exclusively broadcasted live by SBS. The 2010 Vancouver Olympics were also delivered by SBS only. The three main broadcasting stations, SBS, KBS and MBC, negotiated three times, but the negotiations were broken down because of a gap between their demanding prices. KBS offered a purchasing price of about twenty-four billion won. But SBS offered thirty-billion won and forty billion won to KBS and MBC. Also, SBS insisted that only SBS would broadcast the opening ceremony, the final match and the qualifying match of North Korea and South Korea. If SBS monopolizes the right to broadcast the Soccer World Cup, their actions are against the law, and the Korea Communications Commission ordered SBS to correct their monopoly. The Korea Communications Commission argued that SBS infringed viewers’ rights. If SBS put television broadcasts of sports games on TV without considering viewers’ rights, it is an illegal action. Ninety percent of the whole nation can watch SBS, but 10% cannot watch it because they cannot afford it or live in very rural areas. The Korea Communications Commission said, “To guarantee people’s comfortable watching environment of TV, we should think of one tenth first, above nine tenths.” It means that we should not ignore 10% of people who cannot watch the Soccer World Cup, even though 90% can watch it. If some people who live in island regions or shanty towns cannot watch the World Cup, the Korea Communications Commission is responsible for it. Because of their responsibility, the Korea Communications Commission has been loudly blamed. Critics point out that the Korea Communications Commission should have indicated their position clearly. Excluding fines, there are no other measures to restrict the invasion of viewers’ rights. Because of this, the Korea Communications Commission cannot effectively prevent illegal actions. About this incompetence of the Korea Communications Commission, people who work in broadcasting say, “Firstly, the standard of viewers’ rights should be clearly defined.”

32 Fallacies of Our Snacks by Hahn Dongho Have you ever been to the snack bar? For Daeil FLHS students, going to the snack bar is a part of their everyday life. During their break time, they usually go to the snack bar and eat sort of sandwiches, chips, or drinks. Whenever they don’t have time to eat lunch or dinner, they usually go to the snack bar to solve their hunger. What’s more, there are many kinds of snacks in the snack bar, so many students tend to go there. However, there are some big problems with our snacks. Firstly, the meat patty of the sandwiches and the breads are proven to be very bad for our health. According to a TV program, <Consumer Sue>on KBS, there are lots of fatty and non-nutritious sandwiches in every school. For example, producers use low-quality meat such as chicken heads, cows’ greasy skin to make meat patties. This is okay if students eat it once or twice a week. However, when they consume this on a regular basis, it could cause serious problems in students’ bodies. Also, many of these snacks contain lots of seasonings. Seasonings such as MSG are proven to be bad for our health. Other snacks in supermarket don’t contain these types of seasonings. In addition, companies are told by the drug & food administration to confirm that their products don’t contain any seasonings. Therefore, products in our snack bars are in seriously harmful. According to an article, most of the food in school snack bar contains MSG

and other bad seasonings. Furthermore, most of the snacks in our school lack nutrition. They contains lots of fat, sodium, and sugar. However, they don’t contain enough vitamins or calcium for students’ health. This situation could lead to serious malnutrition for studying students of Daeil. Also, great intake could cause obesity. As we consume lots of food from the snack bar, it has the potential to harm our bodies. Although they are very, very delicious, students need to cut down to keep their bodies healthy. How about we stop eating these snacks regularly?

The products in the above picture are unrelated with the contents of the article.

33 More Sleep, Better Grades by Lee Kyeongwun

We have been told since childhood that we need eight hours of sleep for the best health, safety and performance. And yet, high school students don’t get this recommended eight hours. Pulling all-nighters to cram for exams is just one of the many reasons students don’t get the recommended amount of sleep. Does a lack of sleep affect your school work? Of course! If you haven’t slept in a while, your body will do whatever it can to try and catch up on sleep. That means that while you’re trying to get through the day, your body is taking little “catnaps” without you even knowing it. As your body does this, you’ll find it much harder to concentrate. Lack of sleep can lead to inability to concentrate, think fast, or make wise decisions. For high school students, the inability to concentrate or remember facts during a test increases the stress and worry of competing for top grades. so it’s essential to improve your sleep if you want to improve your grades. Here are some things you can put into action. First, get the right amount of sleep. Experts tend to agree that between six and nine hours is adequate for the average person. Second, once you know the right amount of sleep for you, make and stick to a schedule. Sleeping at the same time each night is beneficial. While loss of sleep accumulates over time to contribute to tiredness and drowsiness, sleeping does not accumulate. Third, do not classify naps as the real thing. I know you’ve heard the benefits of short naps, but nothing substitutes for a full night’s sleep. You’ll not only be more alert while doing homework, but you’re less likely to doze off in class during lectures. To aid yourself in falling asleep, avoid caffeine in the evening and instead, meditate or exercise. Fourth, don’t try to compensate for sleep with caffeine and coffee. Using these to compensate for lack of sleep is not worth the side dangers of diabetes, heart attack and addiction. Sleep and school performance go hand-in-hand, so make sure the transition from a busy day to a restful night’s sleep is smooth, and eliminate the things in your life that tend to make sleep less, rather than making you feel restored.

34 The Secret of Cosmetics by Lee Jooyeon

Everyone wants to be pretty, and society generally prefers beautiful people regardless of sex or age. So, people use various cosmetics, from skin lotion to eye cream, to lip sticks, to compacts, and so on. Well, you might think the more you apply the cosmetics, the more moisturized and wrinkleless your skin becomes. And you may believe that with cosmetics you can become a ‘barbie’. But surprisingly, the cosmetics you have depended on are full of toxins. There are many kinds of cosmetics which include chemical substances. Cosmetic companies don’t tell us about the potential danger of their products. They make famous, beautiful actresses say “You can also become like me.” Sadly, it’s not true. Scientists say that there is no solid evidence that the chemical substances in cosmetics lead to cancer or any severe disorders. But they say that the substances do pose possible danger. Actually, when the company make cosmetics, they put many kinds of materials in one product, combine various chemicals, and create new substances which are dangerous and toxic. Also, even if cosmetics have beneficial ingredients, our skin can’t absorb them 100%. It’s better to intake these ingredients through food than put packs on our face. Let’s think about ancient people. Did they have any cosmetics? I don’t think so. Then it means their skin condition was not good? No. There was a research that compared the skin of average women with that of a buddhist(bhikkuni). Their age was same. The only different thing was how many cosmetics they used. Buddhist used only skin lotion and general women used various cosmetics-skin, lotion, eye cream, nutrition cream, BB cream, essence etc. Elasticity, the extent of moisture and overall skin condition were checked. Surprisingly, the buddhists’ skin was far better than the common women. The second astonishing fact is that, qualitatively, there are no differences between high cost brand’s cosmetics and cheap cosmetics. People think the brand and price of cosmetics are the most important thing when they buy them. However, the high cost doesn’t guarantee its quality and ingredients. The cost is just paying for their advertisements, and models. Korean women in particular use too many cosmetics. In other countries such as Europe, USA, and Canada, women use 2 or 3 products. Whereas in Korea, the average number of cosmetics they use is 6 to 7. This is twice or three times as many as other women in the world . Experts say it’s just too much and it can be harmful to your skin. They say the best beauty product is water. Water makes your skin more transparent and splendid. Interception of Ultra rays, intake of proper food and a positive mental attitude are the most important things to keep your skin in good condition. Remember, cosmetics are not magic products that make you look like a barbie. Clever and limited use of cosmetics can make you beautiful and help maintain your young skin.

35 Increasing Earthquakes: Are We Safe? by Song Yoonsoo Recently, massive earthquakes have happened around the world like a string of dominoes. In 2010, unfortunately, several countries experienced catastrophic disasters such as high magnitude earthquakes, including Haiti and Chile. On January 12th, a 7.0 earthquake struck the country of Haiti, destroying buildings and roads, cutting off the communication system and making the whole world wonder about this poor country. It was reported that more than 3 million people were dead or injured. After this shock, there were also at least 20 aftershocks exceeding a magnitude of 5. The whole world was in shock over this incident. Following the case of Haiti, a quake with a magnitude as high as 8.8 occurred in Chile, on February 27th. It was one of the biggest shocks made by natural phenomena-the fifth greatest earthquake since the 1990s. It caused heavy casualties, exceeding 300. After this disaster, the international society promised to support them and provide aid. Although Chile experienced an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.8, the scale of damage was not so great compared to Haiti. Thanks to their thorough preparations, Chile could

avoid the immense damage that occurred in Haiti. In addition to these calamities, earthquakes happened in China, Indonesia, and elsewhere. These phenomena occur more frequent and the magnitude becomes greater, causing worldwide panic and fear. People began to pray for the whole world to avoid difficult situations that occurred in Haiti and Chile. Then, are we safe from these earthquakes? The answer is “no.” In fact, the incidence of earthquakes in Korea is increasing even though Korea is quite away from circumpacific earthquake zone. For instance, in Siheung, Gyeonggido, there was a 3.0 earthquake and this was considered to be a national event. Korea is no longer safe from the earthquakes. Therefore, we need to design earthquake-resistant buildings earthquakeresistant to prevent damage. Conducting evacuation drills is also essential. By preparing appropriately, we can minimize damage. Because earthquakes are difficult to predict, the best thing is to make provisions for them.

36 by Eom Harang Do you know of the Big Bang? I mean the astronomical phenomenon that is well-known as the beginning of the Universe. It was a great explosion that radiated a massive amount of heat and light, which triggered the space expansion. At that very moment, the universe expanded 1023times larger, from a dot of high pressure and heat to vast area measured by light years. However, according to some recent studies, some of these ideas are proven to be false. Some say that the Big Bang is not the beginning of the Universe. Actually, the universe had started before the Big Bang. It had begun 13.7LY(=light year) before, from nowhere(or void, chaos) for an unknown reason. After 10-36seconds from the beginning, the inflation started. The inflation was a space expansion triggered by vacuum energy which space had in itself. Its expansion speed was far faster than the speed of light and even that of the Big Bang. The inflation made the universe expand 1030times larger in 10-34seconds. This is much faster than the Big Bang’s speed, so if you had seen both phenomena, you would feel that they

42

are similar to a light ray and a snail. When the inflation ended, vacuum energy started to be converted into heat. Soon, cold, hollow space expanded by the inflation became a blasting furnace of high pressure and high density. This is the Big Bang. This theory argues that the Big Bang didn’t start from a dot of high pressure and heat but from everywhere in space. As evidence, astronomers point out that transformed cosmic microwave background(CMB) light is observed in every direction of the universe. If the big bang had started from a dot, CMB would have been observed in only one direction. Picture of a variable star, V838 MON, taken Feb, 2004. This was once the brightest star in the milky way.

37 Twitter, The Father of the Information Age by Lee Donghyung We are living in the 21th century, the information age. As the world entered the information age, the internet spread worldwide. In this information age, people pursue their own characters and think of various aspects. And this tendency allows fields such as fashion to be revitalized. Blogs, where people can express their own opinions, became very popular during these trend. So, I am about to take a look at Twitter, one of the most popular homepages. Twitter means ‘Bird chirp’, so, Twitter is a space where people can write brief stories which they want to communicate. In 2006, Twitter was made by Jack Dorsey, Evan Williams, Biz Stone, as a ‘Micro blog’ or ‘Mini blog’. The first glory day of the mini homepage was ‘Mini Hompi’. Mini Hompi is serviced by a site, like Cyworld, Buddy Buddy and so on. In these site, we can meet friends and put up pictures and stories to update our own homepage. But nowadays, the users using these sites are decreasing. The Second Glory Day of the mini homepage was ‘Blog’. Blog is the compound word of ‘web’ and ‘log’. The most famous blog site is ‘NAVER’. It is easier to decorate than mini hompi, and it can upload large amounts of data compared to mini hompi. But it is not easy to meet people and share ideas.

Finally, the third glory day of the mini homepage is ‘Twitter’. Twitter is a social networking and microblogging service that enables its users to send and read messages known as tweets. All users can send and receive tweets through the twitter website. Tweets are posts written in 140 characters, and on the tweets, you can upload pictures, songs, and any other data that you want to share. The best thing about Twitter is that, people can use this service on smart phones, iPod touch MP3 players, and so on. Because of this, Twitter is known for its fast communication system that transcend CNN. For example, Barack Obama, the president of the United states of America, saw great results from campaigning for presidency via Twitter. In Korea, The rival appeared. That is ‘me2DAY’. me2DAY is the new microblog in NAVER. Similarly, people can write their post in 150 characters. But it exists only in Korea. That is its shortcoming. Twitter is used by many people. Star performers use Twitter to inform people of their news, such as pregnancies, release new album, and so on. People can even get information related to traffic through Twitter. Despite of all this benefits, it also has side effects. Typically, the incidence of people who impersonate star performers is increasing, and they do bad things in impersonating star performers. Recently, in Korea Twitter, there was an illegal election campaign. All things have positive effects and negative effects. It depends on you. But in the information age, one thing is for sure. Mini homepage like twitter and me2day is a good opportunity for you to meet new friends and share ideas with each other. Get Tweeting!

38 The Era of Smartphone Is Now Coming by Kim Donghee

Have you ever used a smartphone? If not, you will experience it soon because the era of the smartphone is now beginning. When RIM Corporation released its smartphone called ‘Blackberry’ in 2004, there were just a few people who knew about it and used it. Many others were unaware of what the smartphone was. Nowadays, three years after the first well-known smartphone ‘iPhone’ was released by Apple Corporation, the smartphone is now becoming a very hot issue all over the world. The following sentence summarizes how a smartphone affects your life: ‘The day begins with smart phone and the day ends with smart phone.’ It means that smartphone has exerted a strong influence on many parts of people’s everyday lives. A smartphone is a mobile phone that offers more advanced computing ability and connectivity than a basic ‘feature’ phone. It has a unique operating system that a basic ‘feature’ phone doesn’t have. People can install and use plenty of user-created applications on this operating system. It allows people to use the internet, multimedia, office programs and other useful functions at the same time by using just one handy smartphone. So people say the smartphone as ‘PC in hand’. The smartphone makes our lives more convenient. Smartphone users can download any application they want to use at ‘App store’ or ‘Android market’ on the internet. By using lots of applications, people can do whatever they want more easily than before. For example, people can know departure and arrival schedules of buses with the application called ‘Seoul Bus’. Also, people can use GPS-based maps to easily find a destination. Moreover, people can play lots of games, use the internet and connect to social networking services. The smartphone market is growing quickly day by day. The smartphone market has grown by 24% in 2009, while the overall mobile phone market has declined 7.9%. Furthermore, experts expect that the growth rate of smartphones will rise 43% in 2010. According to Financial News, in 2011, more than half of mobile phone subscribers will be expected to use smartphones. Likewise, the smartphone is becoming a general trend in every part of life. Use of smartphones increases the quality of our lives. If you don’t have it, how about joining the trend?

39 How Amazing!

The Red Core Apple Appeared. by Kim Seungje

Have you ever heard about ‘the red core apple’? You may have heard about seedless watermelons or yellow watermelons but this is probably the first time you’ve heard about the red core apple. Chungju City, which is famous for apples, has decided to spread the red core apple as the future generation’s strategic item. The red core apple is an apple with a red peel and red flesh. The apple was developed by NFG, the company which is headquartered in the Netherlands and Switzerland. One CEO says, “At first, we could not eat the red core apple, because it was too small and sour. After fifty years of studying, we made it bigger and sweeter. Now, it has become more delicious than any other apple.” The taste of the red core apple is similar to summer apples. It is easy to store, because its flesh is hard. It contains 50 times more Anthocyanins (antioxidant ingredient) than a normal apple. Anthocyanins are known to have anti-aging and eye protection effects. Chung-ju City used 70 seedlings last month. They are grown in isolated places to be experimented upon. The seeds will be distributed to farmers after 2012. The core red apples are expected to become value-added products as they are differentiated. This will greatly help Chungju City’s apple farmers. In fact, core red apples have existed before today. They were cultivated in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan in Central Asia. However, they were vapid. It was difficult to keep the plants alive for a long term. The newly made apples are interbred between Central Asia’s apples and regular apples. Genetic manipulation has not been performed, so we can eat them safely. Similar to the core red apples, there exist pomatoes (whose roots are potatoes, stems are tomatoes), raparadishes (whose roots are radish and leaves are cabbages) and so on. These are created thanks to the development of cell fusion technology. Cell fusion technology is popular because it combines each crop’s benefit. More varieties are still under development. More surprising combinations of crops will come to amaze us. Wow!

Have you ever heard about ‘the red core apple’?

40 The Dawning of a New Era: 3D Technology by Ko Ara In 2009, one of the most anticipated movies in history was released. ‘Avatar’, directed by James Cameron broke the old world record. It became the biggest box office success in history, collecting more than two billion dollars worldwide. Winning 3 Oscars, it is regarded as a revolutionary milestone by both critics and audiences. The most significant achievement of the movie is that it popularized a promising technology of the future: 3D technology. What is 3D technology? Can you explain exactly how it works? A key concept you need to understand is ‘visual disparity’. When viewers look at objects, they receive somewhat different images in their left and right eyes. The difference between the two images is called “disparity.” When they are combined into a single image by the brain, this disparity creates the sense of spatial depth and solidity. In short, we can produce 3D images by creating this visual disparity on purpose. Therefore, although the movie is projected onto a flat screen, our brain interprets the images as having depth like 3-dimensional objects. Especially in the case of shooting 3D films, producers use a special camera with two lenses designed to record both the left and right images at the same time. After the box office success of ‘Avatar’, a new trend has been established among movie makers. A number of 3D movies, like ‘Alice In Wonderland’, ‘Shrek: Forever After’ and ‘Step Up 3-D’ have been made. Some people might regard this phenomenon as a passing fad. However, we should pay attention to the fact that 3D technology is affecting more than just the movie industry. The game industry has also begun creating 3D games. Last year, ‘Resident Evil 5’, ‘Star Trek D-A-C’, etc. were released to the public and there are a lot of new games planned for launch last year. In addition, 3D television, which enables us to feel an increased sense of reality, is now available. Many consumers bought it in order to enjoy 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa more vividly. Furthermore, 3D technology can be utilized in medical treatments. According to research, it will decrease the rate of misdiagnosed cancer up to 50%. Experts predicted that 3D technology can also be adopted in architecture, advertisement, education and so on. There is no question that the 3D generation has arrived.

| JPT & JLPT Japanese Language Proficiency Test

#1) The Japanese Language Proficiency Test (日本語能力試), or JLPT, is a standardized criterion-referenced test to evaluate and certify the Japanese Language proficiency of non-native speakers. It is held twice a year in East Asia and once a year in other regions. The JLPT now has five levels, with Level N5 the most basic and Level N1 the most difficult. From 1984 to 2009 the test had 4 levels, with Level 4 the most basic and Level 1 the most difficult. But a new level was inserted between 2 and 3, meaning N5 corresponds to the old Level 4. The Japan Foundation estimates that approximately 150 hours of study were necessary to pass the Level 4 exam and 900 hours of study were required to pass the Level 1 test, although the figures may be significantly higher for native English speakers. In 2008, the Japanese government announced a plan under consideration to use the JLPT to screen applicants for long-term and permanent resident visas. The test is held on the first Sunday of July and December each year. #2) Revised test : Test sections Level

42 How to Be Free from

‘Infinitesimal Calculus’ Phobia : For Liberal Arts Students by Lee Inah

Expanded range of possible questions of Mathematics (Na)

Since the range of possible questions for liberal arts students in Korea is reported to have expanded, students should be able to solve ‘Infinitesimal Calculus’ questions from the 2012 College Scholastic Aptitude Test (2011.11.10). This change was made for two reasons: first, this concept is required if you study politics and economics in a university. Second, it can prevent students taking Mathematics (Ga) from moving to Mathematics (Na). Then, how can we prepare effectively for the new exam format?

Target Fundamental Concept & Key Point

In 2012, the test will include 15 problems from ‘Infinitesimal Calculus and Basis of Statistics’, while 30 questions for Mathematics (Na) will be taken only from MathematicsI until this year. Because of this completely changed source of questions, the gap between students’ abilities is expected to widen. Students, currently in the second grade of high school, may feel a burden since they are required to study much more than their seniors. However, this change could give them an edge. The reason is that since the range of test is broadened, the level of difficulty is expected to decline. According to one high school teacher, what is required for students is just an ability to solve questions asking several basic concepts. Therefore, students should study mathematics focusing on fundamental concepts and key points.

Focus on the Textbook & Workbook

Students may have difficulty since there are no sample questions. This means that they cannot grasp the level of the test or know what material to concentrate on. Also, they cannot use the sample questions from Mathematics (Ga), since they are too difficult for them. For these reasons, the importance of textbook and workbook rises. Some experts predicted that these can be the source of questions. Furthermore, they advised them to solve write-out questions in the textbook.

Be confident

In order to be good at mathematics, the most important thing is to be confident. Don’t be afraid of falling behind! If you make a steady and persistent effort, you will certainly achieve your goal.

43 Abolition of ‘Foreign Language High School’ Failed At Last by Kim Junyoung At the end of the last year, the abolition of foreign language high schools has been highly controversial all over the political world and educational world. The movement towards the abolition of foreign language high schools is largely due to the fact that the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology proclaimed the ameliorated plan, which ordered foreign language high schools to diminish in size and number of students. It was a primary issue of Korea last year. Eventually, this debate was wrapped up by allowing foreign language high schools to maintain their system as specialized high schools but requiring to adopt new admission protocols. The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology announced a reorganized plan for the entrance examination. It is mostly about the requirements of academic reports which are needed to enter specialized high schools. To be specific, foreign language high schools and international high school have to pick students based on their academic reports, English achievements, interviews and studying plans. According to the government’s new plans, foreign language high schools should reduce their scale or should be changed to autonomous private schools. If they want to remain foreign language high schools, they should reduce their number of students to 25 per class. Also, high school

which have the right to select students, such as foreign language high schools and International high schools, should abolish the entrance exam and select students based on a form of “self studying”. In other words, foreign language high school and International high school should choose students based on their English report, interviews, study plans and the recommendation of teacher. Other competition records and Interviews which are related to subjects shouldn’t be among the elements of consideration. In the “study plan” evaluation, students have to write about their visions for the future as well as experience of self studying and reading books. Moreover, there won’t be consideration of other subjects besides English. Similar to those of foreign language high schools, the listening comprehension tests of international high schools will be abolished and 20 percent of the new students will be picked out based on subjects and social care.

44 New-Comers: Singer-Entertainers in Korean TV Shows by

Lee Subin

What is the true meaning of an ‘Entertainment Show’? These days, it means the recreational acting that makes the audience laugh to release their stress. Its main purpose is to make the public laugh by showing entertainer’s talents. Then, who is leading the present Korean entertainment shows like ‘Hot Brothers’, ‘One Night and Two Days’ or ‘Man’s Qualification’ ? In the old days, only entertainers and comedians used to appear in all those programs. This was common in those days. However, today, many singers have become entertainers and won popularity from audiences by appearing in entertainment shows. Their talents even surpass those of the original entertainers. There is more than one singer who is a great success in those shows. The most exemplary singer who achieved success in entertainment is ‘Lee Seungki’. He made his debut as a singer, but he began to appear in the entertainment show, ‘One Night and Two Days’ and became more popular than anyone had expected. Now, he has even gotten into acting and plays the main character in a TV drama. Another good example would be ‘Simon Dominic’, a.k.a ‘Simon D’. He was an underground rapper and wasn’t very famous among Koreans. However, after he began to appear in the TV program ‘Hot Brothers’, a lot of people began to recognize him as a TV star. Now he even appears in other TV shows as a guest entertainer because the Korean audience love to see him on TV! The great guitarist, ‘Kim Taewon’ is the leader of a rock group. When he began to appear in the entertainment show, most people didn’t think that he would be so popular in those shows. That was because he had very strong image as a rocker. However, he played an active part in TV show, ‘Man’s Qualification’. As a result, his image has greatly changed and people of all ages know him well as a star TV entertainer. With his popularity, his rock band also receives more attention. Some people say that for singers to appear in these shows is not desirable because their original duty is to sing, not to make the audience laugh. However, today we cannot ignore the impact of these singer-entertainers on TV shows. We want for these singer-entertainers to keep their identities as singers and also participate actively in entertainment shows, so that they can open up the new era of entertainment in Korea.

45 The Infinite Challenge by Nam Seokjin

These days, TV shows dubbed ‘real variety shows’ are gaining popularity. The ‘real variety show’ means a TV show that doesn’t have a set script but runs by its casts’ instant reaction. This kind of program was welcomed by many viewers who were fed up with the existing contrived shows. Among the many real variety shows, there is one special TV show called ‘MouHan Do Jeon(MHDJ)’ - in English ‘The Infinite Challenge’ - , which is the pioneer in that genre. So, what makes MHDJ so special? Firstly, MHDJ presents extraordinary challenges which were thought to be impossible for entertainment programs to do. For example, there were special features on sports - sports dance, aerobics, bobsledding, wrestling etc. - , cooking, modeling, farming and so forth. Through these various challenges, viewers can indirectly experience what they can’t do at normal times and can gain some unexpected excitement and experience. Secondly, MHDJ is not a just-for-fun TV show. In many special features such as <Guilt and Gil> and <Pimple Break>, it satirizes social problems and political issues of today like the BBK incident or the Yong-san Disaster, and tries to tell the public the truth that has been suppressed by government power and false media. Also, special features on sports touched viewers and received praise for showing great sportsmanship and effort. For instance, in the boxing episode, MHDJ shed light not only on the match’s result but also on both the Korean and the Japanese boxers’ lives, providing insight into the lives of athletes. But still, they never forget to add some humor. Thirdly, MHDJ’s seven members are like our friendly neighbors who live next door. As they are introduced as ‘below average men’ in MHDJ website, they seem to be a little bit too average to be regarded as TV celebrities. But because of this, viewers feel more close to the members and feel sympathy more easily than other TV shows with unrealistic content and all-star cast. Besides, on account of its nature of ‘no-script progress’, each member’s daily life is brought up as a topic of conversation and joke, which makes viewers feel as if they are friends. Lastly, MHDJ cares for people. When the oil tanker’s oil was spilt in the costal waters of TaeAhn, MHDJ donated one thousand million won, built libraries for children, held a song festival to please the people of TaeAhn. Moreover, two member, No Hongcheol and Jung Hyungdon, offered free fish stew and perm for elders. And after the coast was restored, they publicized it in a special feature. In addition to this, MHDJ makes its own calender each year using its members’ pictures and donates all the proceeds made from the sale to charity. It earned about three billion won with the 2010 MHDJ Calendar and is planning to give all the profits back to society, paying for box lunches for poorly-fed children and senior citizen living alone. This is an example of considerate donation for the needy, similar to past years’ donations for relief in Africa, scholarships for youth heads of household, and so forth. We see that, MHDJ really shows concerns for people and fulfills its promise to ‘care for people’. MHDJ is a real variety show which is led by seven members who consider theirselves to be below the average but accomplishes great feats when they work together. We can only hope that this seven men’s exciting challenge and this likeable TV show will continue forever.

46 A Deep Connection between Coach Huh and Maradona by In Hoyeon The 2010 South Africa World Cup has successfully ended with great results. Some countries achieved their goals but some countries did not. The Korean national football team had great games and results so that many Koreans unite as one and feel proud of themselves as a nation. Among the games, the most interesting was the match against Argentina which was considered one of the strongest teams because of the star players like Messi, Tevez, and Aguero. But before this game, there was a special connection that drew people’s attention.

The coach leading the Argentina team in the World Cup was Maradona and the coach of the Korean team was Huh Jungmu. Surprisingly, they once met in the 1986 Mexico World Cup as a member of each national team. At that time, Maradona’s Argentina was the greatest team in the world and the Korean team was considered one of teams that other teams mostly wanted to have a match with because it was thought to be easily beaten. As expected, the game was one-sided. All the Korean players made most of their efforts to defend Maradona who dominated the world of football then. But Maradona was so great that he handled the ball brilliantly and cut through 3 or more defenders by himself. What was interesting here was that Huh Jungmu kicked his thigh while Maradona was slipping through defenders. After this event, some of the foreign press called Korean football style “Taekwon Football” which implied Korean national team’s violent football style. Eventually, Argentina beat Korea 4 : 1. In the 2010 South Africa World Cup, they met again. This time, as coaches leading national teams in the World Cup where they met once before. Though there had been many worries about their abilities as coaches, they showed satisfying performances and the two teams had a great game. It was a game where everyone played well, especially “Messi”, the best player at the moment who made the difference between the two teams. What a wonderful tie it was! Maradona often said that he wanted to revenge himself on coach Huh. He mentioned Huh Jungmu’s kick everytime and he said he would take vengeance upon Huh by the victory. Now the game ended. And football fans all over the world are looking forward to watching the positive connection on the field again.

Because of the right below photo, Korean football style was called “Taekwon Football”

Movie Review for “The Blind Side” by Kim Jihyun

The Blind Side is a 2009 American drama-sports film written and directed by John Lee Hancock. The movie is based on the true story of Michael Oher, one of the best American football players in the United States. He was a homeless and traumatized boy who had never had a family, but with the help of a caring women and her family, he became a promising player. For people who don’t know much about the American football, the movie starts with the brief explanation of the game. By showing the importance of an offensive lineman, the movie engages viewers in the story. Then, despite concerns that the movie might be little boring, the movie soon pulls the audience into the story. The film has a solid story since it is based on the book The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game. Isn’t it amazing that a small effort to care for someone can actually change the person’s whole life? Living with the Tuohy family allows Michael to learn how to trust people and to express some of his feelings that he had developed due to a life of poverty. The important thing is that Michael is not the only one whose life has changed. After Michael became a part of the Tuohy family, the Touohys’ lives also became more lively and energetic. This real story of family and of Michael’s growth into a top football player will have you cheering with its mix of gridiron action and heartwarming emotion. These days, we rarely see a movie that relies on drama alone to carry it(using neither special effects nor complex makeup, just a story that resonates with the viewer). Regardless of advances in film production technology, the most important factor of the memorable movie is a touching story. The Blind Side opened in 3,110 theaters on its opening weekend in the United States and grossed a strong $34,510,000 in its opening weekend, the second highest gross of that weekend behind the New Moon. Though the movie won numerous awards and nominations, particularly for Sandra Bullock, the film’s star, it didn’t see results in Korea. It attracted less audiences than did other action movies such as Iron Man 2. This suggests that people in Korea try to watch movies just for the sake of arousing interest nowadays. They don’t want to think deeply about dramatic stories. But this doesn’t mean that the action movies are bad. For those who want to experience the same feeling you had after watching The Blind Side, I recommend the movie Jerry Maguire(1996). There are subtle differences between its plot and that of The Blind Side. However, since it is also about sports and success, I’m sure it will touch your heart as The Blind Side did.

On this day, all Daeilites from 1st graders to 3r nd after five hours, they arrived at Siem Reap, the Cambodian Airport. The next day, they visited the Akira Museum. They took several school bus with open arms. There were plenty of seniors, of all different majors. Beginning with a welcoming speech by the president of the alumni, seniors and lenty of questions. It was a worthwhile experience for both seniors and students. As soon as the valuable time with seniors was over, ‘SHINE’, the xample, its symbols, club activities, and scholarships, and so on. And then, they amicably answered the questions which the students posed. At the en very student who attended was content with that college tour. It became a memorable experience to students.Spring Hiking with Chinese Language pring showed the flowers in full blossom. From the 1st year to the 3rd year students, all Chinese majors went to Mt.Bukhan after finishing all their sch But before long, there were some people who were out of breath after a continuous climb. From time to time we could see some students sitting and rel ucumbers as well as water to refresh their exhausted bodies and hydrate themselves. Our brief route was like this: we went through Munpilbong whic limbed the mountain. An uphill slope and rocky ground made mountain climbers get tired out. But we could see the entire city below and the beautiful m ents and teachers made time to have a talent show. Representatives from each grade except for third-year students showed off their singing or dancing njoy nature and have a pleasant respite from their tough schoolwork for a while.Ourhome Needs to Be Our Home. These days, many students often pre action with the catering service, Ourhome. Complaints have been made since the first semester. So I’d like to tell you what the problems are.First, the dded to bulgogi. The dish was so awful that most students were forced to give up eating it. This was a slightly extreme case but it highlights what the ood using conventional recipes which are focused on flavor. Second, the menu is a little repetitive. Some dishes such as bulgogi are repeated too frequen equest, please diversify the menu and don’t repeat the same dish in a week. The quality of school meals is important for students to stay in school. We most students have to eat school meals twice a day(three times a day for students who live in the dormitory). This is why the school meal should be b aid for the school meals. Students are not the only ones who think that there is a problem with the school meals. Some teachers in school have agreed They sometimes visit the cafeteria and check the school meal. Thanks to parents, the school meals have improved and the catering service are trying to he change, people were jammed up in the cafeteria, to get their food. Now, the flavor of the school meal has improved, too. It’s much better in compariso nd requests. We thank Ourhome for endeavoring to improve food and really wish Ourhome to be “Our Home” to provide students with good food.Che 00,000 people applied for this exam. This is a significant event which can determine one’s future life. You can probably figure out what it is. The answ ay that Korean students have studied over a decade in order to perform to the limit of their own capabilities. Seniors of Daeil Foreign Language High dvance, all club members had written messages of support in small notebooks and decorated the pages with drawings. We also bought small gifts for o we delivered everything we had prepared. The highlight of the event was when third grade students blew out candles after listening to their juniors singi y Orange Caramel. On the same day, there was another CSAT D-100 event held separately among D-Dorm students in the reading room for female s he younger students. However, they couldn’t watch videos from first graders due to technical reasons. The freshmen had produced several videos by th urpose of the CSAT D-100 event was to encourage third graders. However, it was worth more than that because it also helped Daeil students have a clo program to encourage students who had been studying German. The purpose of this program was to provide an opportunity for students who were g rogram. To apply for this opportunity, he or she should be a high school student and live in Korea. Also, the maximum number of applicants from eac tudents who were selected through the test took an oral examination. The result of the examination was announced in May. Only 4 members could seiz urprising because he had already been known for his great ability in German among his friends. Before he entered high school, he had a pen-pal who or a month, he experienced many things that could be never forgotten. He stayed in Bonn for 5 days, in Berlin for 5 days, in Munich for 5 days and f modern music and radio systems, visited museums, and so on. In addition, he met his homestay family and lived with them for two weeks. He said t memories. I could learn about German culture as well as the German language. I think Germany is worth visiting. Now, I really want to return there. I am mination. His experiences for a month in the program will be helpful when he tries to make his dream come true.First Year Spanish Dept. Students V were two buses for classes 1-9 and 1-10, which were bound for the Latin American Cultural Center. As soon as all the students got on, the buses depar ut looked antique. Soon after opening, the students entered the museum and art gallery in two groups. In the museum, there were more than 300 artifac way piano, the sun of Aztec, and Chinese and Mexican china in the central hall. The sun hanging from the ceiling was especially impressive. There we eople and their gods. All of them were very delicate and cute. In the 2nd exhibit hall, There were some artifacts which were used by the natives in thei ble to imagine ancient civilized men’s daily life from the artifacts. The most interesting hall was located on the 3rd floor. There were many kinds of m eath and sickness. It was well made but a little bit terrifying. There were tools for ancestral rites in hall 4. ‘The tree of life’ and ‘The stone of the sun’ ar with vivid colors. However, despite their vivid description, they looked somewhat gloomy. I thought that’s because the history of the people might be nd curvy people. Because we had some time before lunch, we decided to look around the sculpture garden. All sculptures were realistic, delicate and estaurant in two groups. Some students ate tacos, and the others ate paella. Both dishes were great and we were able to understand latin culture bette panish. I hope to visit Latin America some day..Daeil Debate Championship .
