VOLUNTEER & PHILANTHROPY CENTRE + WAYANG KULIT CULTURAL CENTRE

Client: National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre Location: Kampong Glam (flanked by Baghdad Street, Kandahar Street and Sultan Gate) Project Duration: Across 2 Semester (Approx. 24 Weeks) Project Overview: The project is to design a National Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) and plus. The plus programme should be carefully decided and designed to ensure that it integrates and enhances the act of Volunteer and Philanthropy within the centre. The project should also engages the public’s imagination with a place for partaking, discovering, learning and creating charitable activities with consideration of site context, form and spaces. The facility shall have a build area of minimum 2700m 2, not exceeding 3 storeys.

PROJECT SITE The project site is located within one of Singapore’s historical district, Kampong Glam. Kampong Glam is a conserved development area due to its heritage and historic significance. The selected site (marked in red) is flanked by Baghdad Street, Kandahar Street and Sultan Gate. The site includes the conserved 2-Storey shophouses No. 45 and No. 47 along Sultan Gate. The project site poses an enormous challenge due to the many restrictions and regulations imposed on the development of the conserved area. The existing context of the project site serves no purpose, it is a green voided space in the condensed precinct.

SITE ANALYSIS Revisiting the Kampong Glam Conservation Area, the area is rich in it’s historical and heritage values. The immediate site is within the a number of landmarks such as the Sultan Mosque, a National Monument. Several other landmarks include the Aliwal Arts Centre, Malay Heritage Centre and shophouses that fills the precinct. 4

1 – Haji Lane 2 – Sultan Mosque 3 – Bussorah Street 4 – Malay Heritage Centre 5 – Aliwal Arts Centre Due to the many unique values of the precinct, the conserved area has turned into a popular destination for the tourist. Locals, young and families, also regularly visit the precinct due to the the influx of cafes, bars and boutiques along Haji Lane. Muslim cuisines, textile and pop-up pasar are available along Bussorah Street. The Sultan Mosque is always crowded with locals and toursts as it is one of the most reputable Mosque in Singapore due to its size and history. The Aliwal Arts Centre hosts several events to bring art into the cultural district.

SITE

FORM GENERATION The National and Philanthropy Centre was designed carefully in response to the precinct, adjacent and culture of Kampong Glam. The form takes into consideration of the scale, shape and frontier of the shophouses. The ingress was decided upon a circulation study. The terracing and scaling rebalances the building’s voume in the condensed Kampong Glam.

VOLUNTEER AND PHILANTHROPY The Volunteer & Philanthropy +plus Centre is the host to a diversified range of events, workshops/classes and essentials for the creative industries to nurture a giving culture. A social and charity-driven centre that reflects a collegial spirit and ethos for the community based on an understanding of the spatial and experiential Sentiments to connect and inspire those in need to Live and the community to Give. The Act and Art of Giving correspond with the centre as a social space that influence the way we live and give in the context of contemporary Singapore. All in all, the centre will creates opportunities of influences for a social, understanding and giving culture.

WAYANG KULIT Wayang Kulit is, also known as "Shadow Puppeting", is arrived through the first-hand study of the physical and culutral aspect of the Kampong Glam. The past of Kampong Glam has inspired the basis of the project. The Wayang Kulit performance had often happened in Sultan Gate in the past, however, due to the lack of skills and performer, the culture and heritage of the performance has been lost. Hence, the idea of bringing the old culture and heritage back will reignite hopes to reconnect the Kampong Glam with the past, to enhance cultural understanding and to connect between the old and new generation. Furthermore, Wayang Kulit is a night-based activities which will bring values to the vincinity at night. The quality of Wayang Kulit is shown through the facade design of the building - creating inversed panels and translucent screens that mimick the elements of a typical Wayang Kulit performance. This will allow the building to bring light, shadow, movement and actions to life.

VERTICALITY The centre takes into careful consideration of the site context. The elevation of the site reflects the grid and verticality of Kampong Glam's shophouses. This also creates a site-sensitive elevation with the opposite shophouses and the adjacent house - Mamanda.

POP-OUT FACADE In different parts of the centre, there are pop-out spaces facing out of the building or into the courtyard. Such spaces are used to highlight the specific activities happening inside the building - from the production of wayang kulit to workshops and discussion of philanthropic activities. This hopes to draw attention to the purpose of the building and spread awareness of such functions.

CENTRAL COURTYARD The centre has a central courtyard that highlights the Wayang Kulit Performance and other communal activities. This courtyard space create a visual connection and relationship to other parts of the building.

COLLABORATION SPACES Within the spaces in the centre, the organization of the functions are allocated in collaboration clusters. This means that different types of activities may happen in a cluster. Furthermore, a central-multi-functional space will be used to connected the different activities. Such multifunctional spaces may act as a spill-out or flow-out spaces to attract collaboration efforts from the public and other organizations.

PROGRAMMED INFLUENTIAL CIRCULATION The circulation within the centre is designed in a way that users will be able to go across, about or along the rooms. This is to created an extended experience for users to discover and witness the happening of a philanthropic activities - and create opportunities for users to participate in them.

RELATED EVENTS The spatial allocation of the rooms are carefully allocated to create a seamless (or related) activities that guide users through their exploration journey in the centre. For example, user reading on the exhibition will also be able to witness the puppet making and the back-stage performance of Wayang Kulit at the same time. This will draw curiosity of the users to further learn and explore the agenda - so to participate and create.

SITE

The project site (marked in red) is located opposite the Volunteer and Philanthropy Centre, along Baghad Street. The existing context of the site is a carpark lot dense with 11 trees. The site is surrounded by 3 roads (1 vehicular access road and 2 service road) and backed by shophouses.

DESIGN CONCEPT & STIMULI The design concept of the Pasar-Playground aims to nurture collaborative and community spirits of Kampong Glam. A physical stimuli - Weaving - is used to design the architectural and spatial elements of the Pasar-Playground. The act of weaving is a noticeable idea of the precinct - from physical craft products of Bamboo Baskets & Furnitures to movements through Kampong Glam. The design also carefully reacts with the urban fabric of the site.

SPATIAL RELATION The Pasar-Playground is a place that bridges a playground of permanent, temporary events, retails and community acitivities. The arrangement of spaces ensures engagement and synergy with the users. The general programme includes: 1. A Retail Bazzaar: sales of product related to V&P Centre 2. Playground: social & activity space for community 3. Pasture: cafe & bar for food consumption 4. Platform: acts as a stage for performance and display The organisation of the programmes and spaces aims to nurture collaborative culture between each function. It also encourages users to move inwards into the structure. The allocation of each spaces carefully reacts with the opportunities and challenges of the immediate vicinity of the site, such as making use of the access and service points as well as the existing trees for shading and experience.

WEAVING AND CIRCULATION Weaving, the physical stimuli of the structure, is exercised through combining different building elements into a singular component. The singular component will flows through another, similar to the physical product of weaving. The design also considers the movement of the users, it ensures that the users have a maximum experience of the out-reach portal through the manipulation of prolonged circulation. Users will also be able to experience the act of weaving while he moves through the building. Through the manipulation of the building structure and the movement of the users, the Pasar-Playground will be able create overlapping spaces. These grey areas will create familiar experience for the users which allows them to appreciate the content of the activities.

The programmes of the Pasar-Playground overlaps and crosses with one another. The elements of the structure creates a seamless flow that blends and transcend across the different functions and use of the spaces.

SENSORIUM YOUTH RETREAT CENTRE

Client: A.G. Girls Home and Boy’s Town Location: Pulau Ubin, Jelutong Campsite Project Duration: 12 Weeks Project Overview: The Youth Retreat Centre is a back-to-nature rehabilitation facility for youth at risk. The facility focuses on a short-term immersion programme which aligns the youth to a nature sensitive educational programme which overall mission is to help the youth to rehabilitate. The facility shall have a built area of between 1200m2 and 1500m2, not exceeding the height of 6m. The facility should house 20 youth, director’s family and 4 staff.

CONCEPT & PROGRAMME

STRATEGY

Sensorium, the concept, is developed through the analyzation of the opportunity and information of the client and it’s centre. Through the analysis, word such as ‘open’, ‘unrestricted’, ‘peace’, ‘green’, ‘sea’, ‘wildlife’ are often noted. All the words are connected to the idea of freedom and nature. Hence, the project is conceived around a focus on the use of Green Therapy Treatment. Green Therapy is driven by the use of 5 senses and interaction. A place which will stimulate the sensory of the users - SENSORIUM.

To ensure that the aspect of sensory covers through the entire facility, I have conducted several research on intimate interaction with nature and tactile materials. The research is separated into the different aspects of senses Touch, Smell, Taste, Sight, Hearing.

As the youth retreat centre is a rehabilitation facility, several programmes and rehabilitation activities are introduced to aid the youth in recovery. The programmes are: Cooking, Interaction, Photography, Farming, Green Therapy and Crafting. The programmes aims to enhance the interaction of the user’s sensory more intimately. All in all, the programmes shall not only be participatory but to also integrate into the youth’s lifestyle while living in the retreat.

SIGHT - Maximising views toward nature - Addition of plants - Cross-viewing - Retaining of existing species on site TOUCH - Usage of different natural materials - Encouraging users to “touch” such materials - Play or interact with nature - Use of reactive plants SOUND - Brining and enhancing positive sound - Remove and nullifying negative sound - Promote conversation TASTE - “Tasting” of nature through eating - Programme that combines planting, cooking and eating SMELL - Bringing plants, flowers closer to users - Encourage touch-and-smell - Smell through cooking

DESIGN GUIDELINES To ensure that the facility may use most of the site, a site analysis was conducted. The following are several design guidelines to help forward the development of the retreat centre. MAXIMISING SPACE NEAR THE HORNBILL AREA As the hornbill area is a prime area due to the benefit of sight and sound, other sensory aspect has been placed in touch, smell and taste. This was done through the allocation of kitchen and dining area near to the prime area. By maximizing the spaces, the youth will be able to experience all 5 senses at the prime location. HIGH CEILING HEIGHT ON ACTIVITY SPACES The high ceiling height on the activity spaces creates an illusion of the space being fused with the surrounding nature. This is also done through the help of the use of nature materials and the sea breeze from the shore. Hence, this will enhance the sense of touch and sight on the activity spaces. SUSTAINABILITY Due to the free and open design of the facility, the facility promotes the flow of nature ventilation. The skylight also helps to illuminate the interior spaces. With the passive design, green walls and the slanted roof, for the recycling of water, the facility minimizes the electrical dependence on operating the building.

WEATHER ANALYSIS The building utilises the sea breeze and sunlight available. The open design allows natural wind flow and illumination by the sun. These utilization also helps the user to be involved with living in the nature.

SPACE ALLOCATION The spaces are classified to segregate the private, public and activities area. The classification also increases the user's interaction with sensory and other therapy programmes.

CIRCULATION The circulation within the building enforces the public and private use of spaces. 3 Key-axes defines the building. The width of corridor of each route is proportionate to the amount of users that uses the route.

GREENS The natural greens (eg. shrubs and flowers) are planted along the circulation path of the youth. These greens enhances the sense of touch, smell and sight of the sensorium.

VISUAL & SOUND The location of activities and dormitory are carefully located to maximise views and sounds towards and from nature. The sea, birds, waves, hornbills and sunlight are manipulated to enforce sensory.

TASTE & SMELL To ensure all sensory aspects are met, taste and smell are included through the programmes - farming, cooking and communual eating.

LEVEL ONE

LEVEL TWO

MATERIALS AND TECHNOLOGY As the retreat centre focuses on stimulating the sensory aspect of the users, materials and finishes are important factors on achieving this. The materials and finishes that are used in the building are tactile materials with various range of surfaces – from smooth to rough surfaces. Natural materials, such as plants and rocks, are also used to further enhance the experience. All of the materials are placed close to the living quarters of the youth to maximize their interaction with the materials. For example the slate wall cladding merges the function of structure and furniture. Holes and gaps are deliberated casted to allow furniture to be placed – eg. television, books and decoration. Through this, opportunities will be created for users to have a closer interaction with the different tactile experience available in the facility. The sectional drawing (on the next page) shows the detailing and fixtures of the trellis, bifold doors, green plantation, timber decking, skylights and handrails. All of which plays apart in creating a horizontally wide opening dormitory for the users which will affect their visual sensory.

PAVILION HOPE

Client: Singapore Association of Mental Health Location: Bugis Junction Project Duration: 2 Weeks Project Overview: The pavilion acts as a portal and platform to reach out to the community and to campaign for SAMH's initiatives that benefit society. It offer the community a new space of social awareness for volunteerism and philanthropic activities. This pavilion of pursuance aims to nurture a culture of contributions by creating the spatial narrative on giving that seeks to influence hearts and minds.

CONCEPT The Pavilion is designed to raise awareness for mental health. To achieve SAMH's mission and vision of improving mental resilience, preventing mental illnesses and promoting mental health, "Hope" is used as the concept for the pavilion. The pavilion sends a hopeful message through empathy by the use of experience, materials and light. By visiting the pavilion, one will learn to understand, appreciate and value good mental health and learn more about mental illnesses.

SPACE & JOURNEY The pavilion has 2 key areas - the experience tunnel and the outdoor space. The experience tunnel allows visitors to experience the emotions and the stories of recovered mentally ill patients by using a one-way direction journey to narrate and create emotions and experiences of being a victim of mental illnesses. The outdoor space is where the visitors will be able to interact with the recovered patients to learn more knowledge and to seek help and advice, if needed. The outdoor area also includes food store, toilet and seats to stimulate activities. The journey through the pavilion mirrors several stories and experiences of recovered mental illness patients by exhibiting their stories and facts in the pavilion. The size, volume, space, light and materials are manipulated throughout the pavilion to stimulate the journey – such as, a dark and cold atmosphere to create a atmosphere of lost, absence and emptiness, and light and warmth to signify hope, the end of the negativity and the start of positivity.

MATERIALS & TECHNOLOGY The 2 main materials used in the Pavilion are Concrete and Timber. The use of concrete and timber creates a contrast between the cold and warm atmosphere. The careful placement of the materials creates a unique experience of light and darkness. To increase the mobility of the pavilion, only light-weight modular concrete panels are used. The pavilion can be easily dismantle and rebuilt. Plants are also added to bring values of positivity into the outdoor space.

GRADUATE’S PAVILION @ 5

Client: Ngee Ann Polytechnic Location: Ngee Ann Polytechnic, Blk 5 & Blk 7 Project Duration: 2 Weeks Project Overview: This project is to build a folly to celebrate our seniors' graduation of their polytechnic journey. The folly is restricted to a 3x3x3m cubic volume of space. The folly is to be enjoyed by the students as a gathering, meeting point and photo-opportunity spot. It is important that the folly celebrates the graduating students' new journey ahead and to remember their alma mater. The folly uses a Grid Structure Digital Fabrication method generated with software “Rhino”.

CONCEPT A time for celebration induces feeling of happiness As the pavilion hopes to celebrate the emotions and takeaways from reaching the end of the graduate’s polytechnic journey. The pavilion was designed in an organic shape to provoke different emotions at different angles of the structure. The sizes and patterns of the metal panels grows and increases as the pavilion reaches higher. This signifies the graduate’s growth - ending on a high pointy note of the folly. This celebrates the journeys and emotions of our seniors had during their marvelous years (twist and turn, high and low) and hope that they will reach a new height in their life after graduation. The folly also make use of the natural daylight and grassy scenic background of the site to provide an aesthetically pleasing area for the graduates to capture their last moment in school. The folly is also intended to be an ecofriendly pavilion in terms of material.

MATERIAL & TECHNOLOGY WOOD FOR FRAMEWORK Wood is chose to be used as the material for the interior of the folly –floor, seats, and framework. Given the warm hue that it carries, wood is able to create a comfortable and welcoming ambience –supported by the continuous motion/flow of the design of the folly. Furthermore, the warm and comfortable ambience represents Ngee Ann’s spirit of always being a ‘home’ to the graduate. The timber will be laminated and water-proof to prevent rotting and ensure the structure’s integrity over time. METAL CLADDING Metal plates are used for the material on the external surface of the folly through the use of cladding. The stainless steel cladding is coated with reflective and anti-rust coating. The reflective surface is to portray the reflection and fruits of Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s upbringing, the bright future that the graduates will have. The metal plates also further intensify the curvature of the folly and create more dimension and depth to the bends. TECHNOLOGY The organic shape of the folly is generated through the programme"Rhino". A grid structure network has been applied to create the frame structure and the plate covering. The framework and plates are then generated in a 2D surface in AutoCAD. Then, the surfaces are sent for fabrication and be installed with Bolts and Nuts to form a 3D structure.

CONTEMPORARY HOUSE

Project Overview: The project is a competition hosted by Design Intervention. The task was to designed a home for a couple aged 30-35 years with two children age 4 and 7. The design shall meet the essential needs of the young family, such as, but not limited to: storage for books, toys and miscellaneous paraphernalia.

7

MODULAR PERSONAL SPACE

Project Duration: 6 Weeks Project Overview: This project is to build a personal space for a toddler and it's caregiver. The space shall not exceed 125m3 and should include the use of bamboo material. Through the interview and study of the client, the personal space shall reflect well on how the caregiver uses the space and cater to their own personal needs.

CONCEPT

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT & EXPERIENCE

A client study and interview was conducted to help stimulated a concept. The caregiver notes that the toddler is extremely curious and likes to climb and move around. The curiosity of the toddler gave me an opportunity to find different ways that would excite a toddler to explore. Hence, I came up with the concept of MODULAR in which the toddler is able to climb and explore through different modules to play, rest, eat and participate in other activities.

Hexagon modules was selected for use due to its friendly nature of being able to combine with its shape easily. It is also selected due to its strong structural aspect. Big hexagon modules are used where the caregiver (of height 1.7m) needs to be around - eg. Living Area, Pantry, Toilet. Middle size hexagon are used where the toddler sleeps or plays with her friends. While the toddler naps, the caregiver may take the opportunity to have a break on the outdoor hexagon module to enjoy the outdoor atmosphere. Many different small hexagons are used and stacked upon each other to create a maze-like experience for the toddler to move and climb around – serving as a exploratory playground.

8

CLOVE PAVILION

Project Duration: 2 Weeks Project Overview: This project is an experimental project to learn about the generation and developing of concept through a theme. The theme of the project was "BIOMIMICRY" and a clove was used as the concept stimuli. The pavilion shall be inspired by the spice -clove, in anyway.

CONCEPT

EXPERIENCE

Clove, given as the stimuli of the project, it was used as the driving force for the design of this project. The clove pavilion demonstrate the journey of a clove’s life cycle - from life to death and to it's afterlife. The journey of the clove’s lifecycle will be experienced by the users of the pavilion. The lifecycle of a typical clove was studied, from a green closed clove to a warm hot and dried clove. The taste and smell of the clove, as spice, was also taken into consideration in the designing the space. The shape of the pavilion is borrowed from the shape of a clove.

The clove pavilion has a small-closed entrance which signifies a newborn clove. As the user moves deeper into the pavilion, the facade and the walls of the pavilion changes from a green wall to a raw timber texture. This represents the cycle of the drying of a clove. The internal wall of the pavilion has a gap between the floor to create curiosity on the user to encourage them to move deeper to explore. Once the user reaches the end of the pavilion, there is a choice of an exit or an eatery area. The eatery area is surrounded by walls, textured rough to represents a dried clove. The eatery area is also opened towards the sky. This allows the heat and warmth of the sun to heat up the eatery space - creating the "spicy hot" taste of a spice clove.

9

VILLA BAIZEAU

Project Overview: Villa Baizeau is a 3D Modelling and Rendering project. Villa Baizeau, designed by Le Corbusier, built in 1928, is a modernist house that carries an umbrella which shades the interior rooms; from the ground floor to the upper level the interior space flows from one room to another, thus establishing a constant air current. The 3D Model was built and rendered with Revit and SketchUp Vray.

10

TREE TOWER

Project Overview: Tree Tower is a 3 day project held in Bali, Indonesia, during a Bamboo workshop. The project exploits the use of bamboo as primary structure to create any building based on any concept stimuli. The site was generically located in a forest within Bali. Concept: The Tree Tower is derived from the concept of a Tree -due to the dense forest available in Bali. The Tree Tower has 3 levels and is shaped as a inverted triangle which is inspired by the shape of a tree -thinnest on the bottom and widest on the top. The Tree Tower is primarily used as a viewing platform, the first level is to view the grass level. The second level provides a rare view on the canopy layer of the forest and the highest level provides a tree-top view over the forest. To ensure that the Tree Tower is stable, a thick bamboo column in placed in the middle of the tower to ensure stability. Tension cables are also used to balance the tower.

A

SHELTER +

Project Overview: Shelter+ is a temporary housing project that I had worked on while I was working for Ngee Ann Polytechnic, etc.lab. Shelter+ hopes to serve as a humanitarian temporary housing solution in the AsiaPacific region. During my involvement in this project, I had conceptualise, design and prototyped the product. The product was also showcased during 2017 BEX Asia Exhibition in Marina Bay Sands. ISSUE The Asia-Pacific region is one of the most disaster-prone areas in the world, with frequently occuring natural disasters including earth quakes, tropical storms, flooding, landslides and volcanic-eruptions affecting millions of people every year. According to the UNOCHA, The Asia-Pacific accounts for 44% of all disaster worldwide, and affecting about 690 millions people between 2012 to 2017. Hence, etc.lab hopes to design, introduce and build shelters in the affected regional countries to provide as a form of disaster-relief shelter, temporary or low-cost housing.

FRAME

SOLUTION Shelter+ is a rapid post disaster shelter that is planned and designed to be later upgraded to a more permanent status. This is achieved by integrating future possibilities of transformation and alteration into the structural basis of the shelter. By achieving this, the refugees will be able to obtain and build their house at a faster rate, increasing the rate of permanency.

The end-goal of Shelter+ is to create a durable and sustainable environment for the victims of the disaster. To achieve this, it is important that the structure will be able to provide for the creation and growth of a community. The variability of Shelter+ allows the shelter to have multiple types of layout whilst using the same construction method. With this, different types of unit may be built to fit the different needs and functionality of the community. For examples, some units that can be built are, but not limited to: housing unit, community unit, utility unit, storage unit and more. Shelter+ also ensures that the use of finishing materials are flexible and suits towards the local context. By using a familiar material, Shelter+ will be able to create a sense of familiarity for the refugee’s new home. Regional materials, such as bamboo, rattan, timber and thatch may be used.

Project Overview: Graduate's Folly @ 22 is a similar project as Graduate's Pavilion @ 5. Graduate's Folly @ 22 is a non-curriculum design studio work that was constructed for my senior's graduation. The project uses similar concept and design technique that was taught in pavilion @ 5. The entire project was designed, prepared and constructed by my team and I. The folly was built and used as a non-conventional hangout space and photo-opportunity for the graduates.
