Pokrajinski muzej Ptuj - Ormož je splošni muzej z zbirkami in oddelki za arheologijo, zgodovino, kulturno zgodovino, etnologijo, restavratorskimi delavnicami in drugimi službami. Njegov nastanek sega v leto 1893, ko so na Ptuju ustanovili Muzejsko društvo in razstavili arheološke najdbe v tedanji nižji gimnaziji. Leta 1895 so zbirko dopolnili s številnimi podarjenimi muzealijami različnih zvrsti. Po donatorju prof. Francu Ferku so muzej imenovali Mestni Ferkov muzej. V Sloveniji so zlasti Ptujsko in Dravsko polje, Haloze in Slovenske gorice tista območja, ki zbujajo pozornost zaradi števila in raznovrstnosti tradicionalnih pustnih mask. V zbirki so na ogled tradicionalne pustne maske: orači, rusa, medved, baba nosi deda, haloški Jürek in Rabolj, ploharji, kopanja, picek, kura, vile, dornavski cigani, koranti, hudič in kopjaš. Večinoma niso osamljen pojav, kajti podobne like srečujemo tudi drugod v Sloveniji in Evropi. Regional museum Ptuj - Ormož is a general museum with collections and sections for archaeology, history, cultural history, ethnology, restoration workshops and other services. The beginnings of the museum go back to 1893 when the Ptuj Museum society was established and archaeological findings were exhibited in the then lower grammar school. By 1893 the collection had been completed with numerous artefacts of various types donated to the museum. The museum was named Ferk’s Municipal Museum after the most important donor of the museum, professor Franc Ferk. The exhibition hall soon became too small for the expanded collection, therefore the Municipality allocated the former Dominican monastery to the Museum where it moved in 1928. After 1945, the castle complex was placed under the Museum’s stewardship, which has thus acquired the majority of its present facilities. At the same time the Museum expanded its field of action and in 1963 acquired the title of the regional museum Ptuj. Nowadays, the museum operates in the wider geographical area of Ptuj and Ormož, both famous for rich remains from the prehistory and antiquity (Roman Poetovio), from the period of migrations of peoples, medieval times and modern age, bearing witness to the cultural and economic importance of Ptuj and its surroundings as well as to the rich folk heritage. In particular should be mentioned numerous carnival customs and masks which were first exhibited as part of a bigger ethnological collection in 1956. The present collection, located at the castle of Ptuj, was opened in 1998 and displays all traditional carnival masks typical of the region. In Slovenia, the Ptuj and Drava Fields,Haloze and Slovenske Gorice hills represent the area which draws attention by the number and variety of traditional carnival masks. The collection displays the traditional carnival masks: the ploughmen, the rusa, the bear, Jürek and Rabolj from Haloze, the loghaulers, the trough, the cockerel, the hen, the Fairies, the Gypsies from Dornava, the Korants, the Devil, and the spearmen. In most cases, these carnival masks are not a unique feature, for similar ones can be found elsewhere in Slovenia and even in Europe.
