Street food originated in Asia on the streets of Thailand, Cambodia, Japan and Vietnam and is massive in the states with several documentaries popping up on Netflix lately, Yes, street food is all the rage right now and with good reason. So, wouldn’t it be great if we didn’t have to travel half way around the globe to experience the very best of world cuisine! What if we could pop out with the family for a quick lunch at a local pub that cooks and serves street food, you’d tell me I was crazy right? Well, thanks to Jon and Nicky at the Three Cottages we can do just that. They have bought street food to Chesterfield and made it accessible for all the family. With their reinvigorated menu, gluten free options and dishes for meat lovers and vegans, you too can have a taste of the orient, minus the mosquito bites!

hat a busy but fantastic month we’ve had. We celebrated Simons 40th birthday with family and friends. Let’s just say Simon had the time of his life but instantly regretted it at 9am the next morning. We celebrated at The Crafty Dog; Neil did a fantastic job of setting up an area for us at the back. Thanks Neil!

This month we were lucky enough to be able take the girls to Disneyland Paris in the school holidays which was expensive but worth every penny. The weather was amazing, the park was busy but not unbearable and the hotel was great. We went for the cheapest hotel ‘Sante Fe’ as we knew we wouldn’t be spending too much time in it. The hotel was excellent and exceeded my expectations, I would highly recommend! Although, the queuing system at check-in is horrendous but I’ve heard it’s like that at all the hotels. I would absolutely go again but I think we’ll wait till Florie is a little older. If you are planning on going to Disney, be sure to take lots of snacks as it is rather expensive and if you do decide to eat in a restaurant, be sure to book well in advance as by the time you arrive all the tables have gone!

Another highlight for me this month was watching an acoustic performance by The Levellers at the beautiful Buxton Opera House. I was blown away by the performance and it's motivated me to try to go to more gigs this year. All in all, a good month for me, it’s been busy but then we both work full time, have two children and run the magazine so busy is just everyday life. Thanks for reading and I hope you all had as much fun as I did this month!

It was the Vegan Knights Market this month which was fantastic! It was the first of its kind and ‘Cakes by Bobbies Den’ did a fantastic job of organising it, well done Jen! I purchased some tasty cheese from Hard Times Vegan – go for the chilli cheese it is sooo good! It works well with the chilli marmalade from Ashgate Preserves. (I’m sure you’re not supposed to put marmalade on cheese, but it was lovely) I would also recommend the chocolate from Cocoa Elora if you like a dark chocolate with a glass of red. I’m not normally a chocolate fan however it was that good I ate Simons bar too! It’s normally the other way around so Simon had to forgive me. Page 6

pril by all accounts was the best month of 2019 so far. Granted there has only been four months, but it will take some topping!

I turned 40 in April and as sad as I am to say goodbye to my 30’s, I have a feeling my 40’s will be epic, they started well, anyway! My amazing partner Bekah organised a 40th birthday meal/party at the Crafty Dog on Chatsworth Road. Around 30 of my closet family and friends made the effort to celebrate with me, although I don’t think it was hard to persuade them, given the selection of craft beer for sale! In line with British tradition people bought me drinks and as the night progressed, these drinks turned into shots at the bar! No self-respecting 40 year old should be seen at the bar downing shots of tequila with people half his age, but on this occasion, it’s exactly what happened! Being as though I don’t have a drink from one month to the next the following day was horrendous! I stayed in bed all day, only leaving it to frequent the toilet! It was 5pm before Bekah ‘forced’ me to get up and commence my role as a parent, a role I was doing my best to avoid. Parenting multiple children is hard enough, without a hangover fit for the movie! By 8pm I was back in bed (thank god).

1am the following morning our alarm went off and it was time to get up! Now, the only time you don’t mind getting up at 1am (if there is one at all) is when you are going on holiday. Bekah and I had decided to take the kids to Disneyland for my official birthday. We booked two full days in the park and a day in Paris. We arrived at Disney around midday and the kids were absolutely shattered as we had been up since 1am. As we entered the park I made the kids pose for a photo. Disneyland claims to be ‘the happiest place on earth’, but Eva clearly missed the memo and Florie seemed somewhat underwhelmed, but it made for a great photo!

Disney is a magical place but it also very busy and the queues, at times, are quite lengthy. This meant that I had to put on my project manager hat and attack the park in the most efficient manner, maximising ride times and ensuring that we did everything we (mainly me, mainly Star Wars and Marvel) wanted to in the allotted time. After a day of my itinerary the girls had had enough and I had to relinquish control to someone far less qualified for the job, Eva age 8 (going on 30). For me the best of Disney lay within their live shows. The Marvel superhero and Mickey’s Magical adventure were spectacular to say the least. We all had such a good time, but we were ready for a holiday when we got back, luckily I had booked the rest of the week off to spend with my family over the Easter period. I hope your April was as good as mine and you have a great start to the summer. Peace, love and positivity Simon

Cover Artist

Cover Art: Brenden Jones What influences Brenden during his time at Tattoo HQ. Words: Simon Paterson Images: Brenden Jones

How old were you when you got your first tattoo and did your parents know?

I was 15. I had all intentions of getting a tiger tattooed but didn’t have enough money, so I ended up with a tiny butterfly on my ankle. My parents didn’t find out until we went on holiday later that year. My mum didn’t seem to mind at the time, so I had a wizard on my arm … this time she did mind, I got a clip round the ear and she didn’t speak to me for over a week.

Thank you very much. Graphic Design is something I want to get into, the cover art is all hand drawn, not a computer in sight. I’ve recently been looking at doing a BA honours in illustration/graphic design to broaden my skill-set. It’s something I’ve always been interested in doing and it will help me grow as an artist. How did you come up with our front cover design?

What was the first thing you tattooed on someone else, who was it and was it any good?

By accident really, I was initially going to do a traditional tattoo-style panther, but when I sat down to draw, the rose idea just popped into my head.

So, I have one tattoo, it is a Frank Turner album cover (Love Ire & Song, best album ever, give it a listen) done at Tattoo HQ no less. When did you set up Tattoo HQ and what has been your biggest challenge to date in running your own business?

In the art world, there has been a bunch of people over the years. M C Escher caught my eye as a child, I would say my favourites by him are House of Stairs and Other World. In the mid 80s, I got into graffiti art which I think translates into my tattoos. Mode 2 was, and still is, my favourite graffiti artist.

My first tattoo was done in 2001 on a lad from Scotland, a tribal style sun with extremely wobbly lines.

I set up tattoo HQ in 2009 with my business partner Chris. We’ve just celebrated our 10th birthday in the shop. I would have to say that the biggest challenge is keeping going for another 10 years! What advice would you give to someone looking to get their first tattoo?

I would advise anyone looking at getting there first tattoo to take their time. Find an artist whose work you really love and make sure the image is something that you want on your body for the rest of your life. Definitely don’t go for the cheapest, it may well cost you more in the long run getting it covered up.

What or who inspires you?

You can give one piece of advice to your younger self as you're about to leave school, what would you say?

Work hard to achieve your goals and enjoy what life brings. Our thanks to Brenden for taking the time to produce two stunning, unique cover designs for us, S40 and S41 Local cover pages. Check out his social media to keep up-to-date with his work.

Not only are you an exceptional tattooist, but clearly a talented artist. Our front cover is graphically designed, is this line of work something you may explore in the future? Page 14

Words: Nicola Chapman Images: Frazer Longford & Jason Cotton

I

n January 2018, Frazer Longford’s friend decided to take his own life. He wasn’t the first friend to do so, he was the third. This had a big effect on Frazer and he struggled to come to terms with it, he wanted to understand why it happened to so many men, what had motivated them? He wondered why blokes don’t open up and ask for help. “It was whilst discussing this on my journey to work with my car share buddy, vocalising my thoughts, that I figured out I wanted to help men friends and colleagues, who might be struggling, I wanted to reach out and say ‘look whatever you’re going through, I’m here for you’.”

It was a brave step that Frazer took next - he booked a meeting room at work and invited all the men along at 9:15am one morning. “All the men turned up, wondering what was going on, and I stood up and told my story, shared my experiences and said just that…‘whatever you’re going through I’m here for you’.” Jason Cotton was one of the men in the meeting room that morning. Page 16

“What Frazer said really resonated with me, I’d struggled with my mental health, I’d had similar experiences where people close to me had taken their own lives, leaving me and the people around them without answers and what Frazer did fired me up to do something.”

Frazer and Jason decided they’d book a meeting room, again at work, and invite men to come along to a safe space where they could talk. They put up posters in the lifts and the gents' and walked round talking to people. Jason admitted “I found this really awkward, it was difficult to broach the subject with men and talk to them about their mental health and emotions, I could sense the tension as we approached, there was a lot of stigma around the whole subject. Whereas Frazer seemed much more comfortable”. Around 20 people attended that first session; Frazer and Jason had no training or experience but wanted to help men talk. They kicked off the session with no plan and no idea how to run the session.

People “Looking back at the first session, it was a little clinical”, explained Jason, “but we’ve learned and adapted along the way. At the session Frazer told his story again, to the group of men sitting around a meeting table. We developed a confidentiality rule, what’s said in the room, stays in the room, which we reiterate at each session – and people opened up.”

“We want to provide men with a space where they can speak and express themselves, or where they can just listen to others and say nothing. For some people just hearing from others who’ve been there helps. There’s absolutely no pressure to speak, there are no expectations.” After 14 months running sessions at work, Frazer and Jason have recently expanded to offer the same style sessions at Stonegravels Parish Centre.

Jason explained, “the sessions are for men over 18, there’s no need to book you can just turn up, there’s no need for an appointment and they’re free of charge. People can stay as long as they want to stay, some people leave after 30 minutes if they have other commitments, other people stay much longer. We welcome everyone who arrives, but they don’t have to introduce themselves, there’s no register… people are met with a handshake, a cup of tea, coffee, biscuits and snacks. "We have six people welcoming men as they arrive; Frazer Longford, Jason Cotton, Lisa Longford, Francesca Whyld, Rebecca Tustin and Trisha Black, women who’ve been affected by men, in their lives, who have committed suicide. The women are sometimes invited to talk at the beginning of the session, to provide another perspective, but then leave and the men talk amongst themselves. At the session connections form, based on shared experiences, the people in the room tend to pick up on something said by someone else, something that resonates with them, and offer their own perspective. “We have had young men who’ve lost parents, men who’ve suffered relationship or family breakdowns, men struggling with financial problems, divorce, abuse,

Page 18

www.s41local.com

addiction. The reasons people come are wide and varied, everyone is welcome – the sessions are simply for men who are struggling to cope and want some support and someone to talk to.”

Frazer described poor mental health as, “an illness that makes the mind fuzzy. By talking you’re clearing the clouds, it can help you see things with some clarity. If you don’t clear the clouds, it will get worse and worse.”

Jason describes how the atmosphere in the room changes from the beginning of the sessions. “We’ve seen men arrive in tears but leave looking as though a cloud has lifted, feeling lighter and less weighed down. This is just by talking, being listened to, and sharing time and space with other people who understand.” “Coming along to a session can be a turning point for people, it’s a really big and brave step to take and we recognise that. We do everything we can to make sure people feel comfortable and to offer support. We’re not counsellors, therapists or medical in any way, we’re just two guys who have experienced what people are going through, who want to support other people, to have positive impact on their mental health and stop people feeling the only option is to commit suicide.” The next Stonegravels session is on 13 June at 7pm. You can find out more on the facebook page: Men-Talk.

Men-Talk will also have a stall at Chesterfield Pride this year on Sunday 21 July.

It was a unanimous decision by all those judging and we all think the picture above beautifully encapsulates the spring theme. Words: Bekah Anstey Dancing, gymnastics and swimming are amongst many of GR Glazing’s talents. Well, he can talk you through just about everything, but ask him to bust out a back flip or a pirouette and he may struggle. The owner of GR Glazing is a proud dad of two girls, AKA dad's taxi, costume maker and a blank canvas for make-up application. Gareth is totally outnumbered at home, with partner Sarah and two very cute daughters. Introducing the proud owner of GR Glazing - Gareth Richards GR Glazing is a double-glazing company based in Chesterfield, which has been giving complete satisfaction to customers for many years. With high expectations, owner Gareth really does pride himself on his standard of work and quality of the materials he uses. Gareth is extremely experienced and had lots to say about his business.

He is timely and ultra professional from start to finish and I can’t recommend him highly enough. I will definitely use him again." Phil Green "Really impressed with Gareth. He was honest, reliable and straight forward. There was no sales jargon or pressure. He came on the day and did exactly what he said he would do and got loads done in just one day. Charged exactly what he said he would. Tidied up well and was trustworthy enough for me to let him lock up. Would highly recommend" Abi "Really great job by Gareth. We have had two new windows now and on each occasion the work has been of a high standard, finished quickly and efficiently. Will be using him again" Amanda

41 has the pleasure of working with local, independent businesses in Chesterfield. Many of these businesses choose to advertise with us every month, such as Diverse Recruitment. As a result of this we get to know the people behind the brand, and this got us thinking! Our readers are the ones who buy products and services from our advertisers, so wouldn’t it be great if they got to know a little more about them too. I give you our ‘everyday entrepreneur’ series. First up is Garry Chambers, the family man and creator of Diverse recruitment. What motivated you to start your own business? I wanted to have control of my own destiny, build something that was meaningful and eventually have the affordability to spend time with my kids, which in my opinion is more valuable than anything. What advice would you give your 16-year-old self? I would say try to focus on a career that embraces what you are good at. I am good at talking to people and building relationships, find what works for you and ignore external pressures of what you should be doing. What’s the best and worst thing about running your own business? The best is getting people into sustainable jobs and really helping them to achieve something they’re proud of. Coupled with receiving good feedback from clients and gaining repeat business. The worst is possibly doing your best to get people into work and they just don't turn up and fall off the face of earth, but this doesn’t happen very often! How do you manage your day and what does a typical day look like? I try to hold a morning meeting every day, this is to discuss who is doing what – however this can change with one phone call. No day is ever the same which I love about my job, some days are great then some are absolute stinkers, I suppose we all have this in common.

to apply. Should this be relevant to the candidate then I go through all the compliance required to make their journey as smooth as possible.

I’ve known Garry from Diverse Recruitment for many years and had the pleasure of working with him, but how well do you really know someone you have worked with? I wanted to find out so asked Garry some fun questions, my answers and his are below. Check out how I did! What did you get Terri (Garry’s beautiful wife) for Christmas? Bekah: I think that Garry would go for the easy option - perfume, although I do think he’d go for an expensive one. Chanel? He’d then spend the rest of the day looking at football results or speaking to candidates. Garry: Quite a few materialistic things, I got her a foot and hand cast of our son which she loves.

What’s the best present you have ever received? Bekah: Something football related.

Garry: It sounds so cheesy, but it would be my 2 beautiful boys. If I had to say a gift it would be that my wife bought me an Xbox for our first Christmas together. If you had to live on one meal what would it be? Bekah: Curry. The go to takeaway for most men is a curry, right? I think he’d need a beer (or 2) with it though.

Garry: Steak (sirloin or Fillet), Chips and Peppercorn Sauce with Broccoli and Onion Rings. As you can see, I was way off the mark and didn’t know Garry at all! It’s a good job we started this series then! If you’re looking for staff or a job, I would highly recommend the services of Garry at Diverse Recruitment. 01246 252 350 garry@diverse-recruitment.co.uk www.diverse-recruitment.co.uk

What is your recruitment process for a candidate? This can be quite varied dependant on the job. I meet with the candidate to give them all the information required for them to decide if they want

Over The Hill!

Bakewell's 'best kept secret' revealed ... if you like garden machines! Words: Paul Chapman Images: Torne Valley

T

orne Valley is a bit of a hidden gem in the garden machine business, located just over the hill in Bakewell. It's a family run business, managed by Robert Sherratt who lives in Holymoorside. It’s the kind of store where you will always walk out with a purchase even if you just go in for a browse! Stocking garden and horticultural supplies, their brands include Viking, Stihl (the only local Stihl stockist), John Deere, Atco, Countax and other quality manufacturers. “We only stock quality brands” says Robert, “cheaper brands really aren’t worth stocking in the long run, as we have learned from our experience. Quality is remembered long after the price is forgotten. Gardening should be pleasurable and not frustrating because machinery won’t start”.

Torne Valley have three branches and is independently owned. The Bakewell store is located on Haddon Road, next to the petrol station, Epworth over in Lincolnshire and head office at Tickhill in Doncaster, which has a heavy farming influence. Each branch tailors its products to fit the geology of the area in which it is based, Bakewell sell a lot of machinery for both small and large gardens alike. “Customers are always surprised at the range of over 30,000 product lines we stock” Robert explains. “Apart from the garden machines and ride-ons, we have a range of hand tools and hardware, garden products, animal feed and products, horse tack, even kid's mini tractors, trailers and cars! It really is a huge range, but machinery is where we excel.” The range of products include lawnmowers, garden strimmers, brush cutters, a full range of

hedge trimmers plus a huge selection of leading edge rechargeable lithium ion products which are light weight. “The Sthil products really are a pleasure to use” adds Robert, “easy to handle, start at the flick of a switch, quiet and great for the environment. We presently have rechargeable Stihl strimmers at £99, which are very popular, we really can’t get enough of them.”

“The same is true of the Stihl MS180 chainsaw, this 31.8cc 14” petrol chainsaw retails at £250 but we’re doing them at £189 and, again, they are selling really well. Whether it’s garden maintenance or cutting up logs for the burner these are a great machine!" At Torne Valley, they spend a great deal of time and effort to ensure they price stock competitively. “We are careful when buying stock, the size of the business enables us to bulk purchase during the off season when we can really push to obtain good prices. This enables us to pass these savings on” says Robert.

“As Spring hits us and the garden bursts into life it’s time to get the old garden tools out and if you’re thinking of replacing them please give us a call. “At Torne Valley we’ll listen to your needs and recommend the right machine for you, we’ll then demo it, and once you’ve decided on what you want, we’ll set it up and run it so you’re really familiar with it. No opening a box and scratching your head as you figure out how to put the new lawnmower together” Robert says.

“If you buy from us, you know it works, you know it’s right for you and you build a relationship that will probably see you coming back time and time again … the internet doesn’t do that!” Robert laughs.

When you next need a garden machine, pop over the hill to Torne Valley and see if they can help, don’t forget to mention where you saw them, and if you feel peckish, take a walk into Bakewell, I’ve heard they have some sort of pudding that’s worth a try!

Doing Ordinary Things Exceptionally Well Meet the team and new advertisers Pinewood Properties. Words: Bekah Anstey (S41 Local) This month saw the Estate Agents of the Year Awards (ESTAs) 2019 held in London, I am lucky enough to get the low down from one of Chesterfields top Estate Agents Pinewood Properties, well, actually they are officially the ‘Best Estate Agent in the East Midlands’. I met up with Stacey Davis-Bowler, Director of Pinewood Properties, to have a chat about the awards and his teams’ achievements. Stacey congratulations on your success, you are all clearly still buzzing from your trip to London, can you tell me a little about the ESTAs and the awards your team won? The ESTAs to Pinewood Properties are so important, we look forward to them every year. They are the largest independent customer service feedback and awards scheme for the residential property industry in the UK. This year we were lucky enough to win 7 team awards and 1 individual award which is a huge achievement for us and I’m extremely proud of this. • Best Estate Agent in Derbyshire • Best Estate Agent in the East Midlands • Best Agent with 2 to 5 Branches • Best Letting Agent in Derbyshire • Best Letting Agent in the East Midlands (as voted for by landlords)

Stacey, running a successful business for many years must mean you have a secret formula, can you share this with our S40 and S41 Local readers? I absolutely do have a secret formula but I’m afraid I can’t share this, however what I can tell you is that at Pinewood Properties we offer a unique service and it keeps bringing our customers back to us. I have clients from back in the day (2004 to be precise), these clients I specifically remember cold-calling from my spare bedroom when I first started my business and they have stayed with me all this time. Customer service is something we’re very good at here at Pinewood Properties, we value our customers and treat them with respect when we visit. Sometimes it can be something as simple as making sure you take your shoes off when you walk in, being respectful is key. Stacey what are you most proud of from the last 12 months? There are 29,000 agents in the UK, some have huge portfolios and have been running many years. I only launched our premium service 15 months ago and it has really taken off. I’m proud of the team for not only achieving some fantastic results but for winning some amazing awards not only at the ESTAs but also with EA Masters, Mansfield Chad, Allagents.co.uk and the Derbyshire Times Business Awards where we were highly commended in the Customer Service category. f you visited Vegan Knights Market in Chesterfield on its maiden voyage there are two words you might have been unlucky to hear ... SOLD OUT!

The market opened at 10am and at 10.01am money was already changing hands with visitors snapping up vegan and sustainable goods a plenty with many traders completely selling out by end of the day!If you were lucky enough to grab one of Hard Times Vegan Cheeses before they SOLD OUT (S41 did) you, like me, will be looking forward to purchasing your next one at the second Vegan Knights Market Chesterfield scheduled for July 14th (S41 will). Chesterfield market has been trading for over 800 years so it’s always fantastic to see the marketplace buzzing with visitors of new and old embracing all aspects of the day. Chloe Boulton helped to create a wonderful atmosphere singing songs from her huge playlist and there were even a few market goers dancing away .... mindful not to spill their beverage purchased from the Winebox! Street food from Sunshine Deli, Vegan Junk, Pizza Pi and Home Kitchen ensured shoppers were well fuelled ,ready to fill their tote bags up with goodies from traders such as Cup and Saucer Tea, Urban Flamingo, Stephs Sustainable Stuff and Vork Pie (love that name).

Our furry friends were well catered for with items from Dash Vegan and the inspirational Lisa from Artisan Pet Care, with her holistic approach to healing our best friends.

The youngest trader on the day was Ryder aged 7 (just!) from Ryder's Rhinos, he sold succulents to raise money for Charlies Place - animal rescue centre - at £50 donated we think he did amazing!

Page 32

Another young tag team was Bobbie - Eve (7) and Maisie (7) from Bobbie Fox & Maisie Bee creations who sold an array of handmade goods raising £60 to plant flowers favourable by bees and butterflies, these will be planted at Ashgate Hospice. What’s great about Vegan Knights Market is you do not have to be Vegan to visit and enjoy the event - The event is open to everyone as a destination family market with entertainment so you can make a day of it and take your time browsing.

So, what did I buy??? Something from every street food seller - before you judge I bought for the whole family! I purchased smokey balsamic dressing from Ashgate Preserves, a Loles soap to tackle my daughter’s eczema, vegetable sauerkraut from Tummy Tonics, a brownie from Rate Good Brownies, a marshmallow lollipop from Ananda Foods and a soy wax melt from Harriet and Lola's candles....... All suitable for those following a Vegan Lifestyle also suitable for those just interested in new and amazing products! Visitors left with full bellies, even fuller shopping bags and happy with the knowledge they had supported small local, independent businesses, just like we do at S41 and Cakes by Bobbies Den. We hope to see you at the next event!

David & Barbara Wallace Founders of Nenna Kind Words:Bekah Anstey Images: Nenna Kind

T

his month’s Local Heros are a very deserving couple who I have seen supporting events on many occasions, they are the face of The Nenna Kind Centre and always attend local fundraisers to provide a personal touch. Barbara and Dave Wallace, it’s your turn! Nenna Kind was established back in 2010 by Barbara and Dave at the request of their daughter Helen. The centre is named “The Nenna Kind Centre” after Helen Hinde, Nenna because her niece couldn’t say Helen and called her Aunty Nenna, and Kind because a little girl at the pre-school Helen worked at thought her name was Mrs Kind and so she got nick named “Nenna Kind”. Sadly, Helen lost her long battle with cancer in January 2011, but her legacy will live on through the centre, where they hope to give help and encouragement to all who are affected by cancer. Their first challenge when setting up the centre was

Page 34

to find premises, furniture and all the other things needed to make it a welcoming and comfortable place. With the support of Barbara and Dave’s family and friends this was achievable, and the cancer support centre was launched. Now it’s all well and good having premises and inspiration, however, they required many volunteers in order to offer the services they wanted at the centre. They had to be right for Nenna Kind, they wanted people that could empathise with those affected by cancer, so that they could support through active listening and understanding with the centres service users. Barbara knew it would be difficult to understand concerns, fears and emotions of a cancer sufferer if you haven’t had personal experience. Lovely volunteers came forward, and they now have eleven volunteers and six therapists, without whom the centre wouldn’t exist! Not only do the volunteers listen to clients and give therapies, they also muck

www.s41local.com

in and support with running the centre, even down to cleaning the office and modelling at fashion shows! Nothing is too much trouble and every task is undertaken with a smile. Barbara and Dave cannot begin to express how grateful they are, but I’m pretty sure they all know!

Nenna Kind provide lots of services and benefits advice through Derbyshire Workers Rights, alternative therapies such as healing, reflexology, massage and shiatsu. But the thing I like the most about the centre is that if a service user is just feeling tired and having a low day, they can just drop in to the centre for a sit down and a drink for as long as they want. David and Barbara were nominated for this month’s local hero award by Helen Plumb

Barbara and David set up the charity to help others diagnosed with cancer. Their help is appreciated by all, the comfort that Barbara and her team give is amazing. There are activities for everyone within the centre, they provide transport to Weston Park for all patients which is a big support. It’s simply an amazing charity.

In addition to the services provided within in the centre is a free bus service to Weston Park hospital. David himself is one of the drivers and has taken 100’s of cancer sufferers to numerous medical appointments over the years. A special mention has to go out to the Jarvis family and in particular the late Phil Jarvis. Their tireless fundraising has enabled Nenna Kind to purchase and run a second mini bus! Barbara and Dave it’s clear to us here at S41 Local that you have a huge impact on the lives of others, without your help patients and their families would not be able to access lots of support that make the dark days manageable and we cannot thank you enough.

Anyone For Tennis? Fit for life!

Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club (CLTC)

C

hesterfield Lawn Tennis Club are holding an open day on the 7th July from 1-4pm, there’s no need to book you can simply turn up and give it a go! Enjoy a FREE group coaching session - for all ages and abilities. Find out about the club’s holiday camps for kids and enjoy the amazing indoor & outdoor facilities. Here’s why you should give it a go…

I am certainly no tennis expert, but I have seen the impact that tennis has on both Simon and Eva when they have played at Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club. They come back high on life, full of positivity and bouncing off the walls. Now we all know that any form of exercise releases endorphins which triggers positivity in life, it also controls weight and improves overall wellbeing. However, tennis gives you that something extra. It is known to boost brain power, yes boost brain power! I should get myself down to the tennis courts pronto! Tennis requires the brain to be creative, and it involves planning, tactical thinking, agility and the coordination of different parts of the body. Studies show exercises that require a lot of thinking — such as tennis — can improve brain function in ways that aid memory, learning, social skills and behaviour. Charlie at Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club has launched an initiative in Chesterfield to get key stage 1 and 2 children involved in tennis to help improve brain power and develop lots of key Page 36

skills. Chesterfield Lawn Tennis Club are taking tennis on the road and running taster sessions in schools, so far, they have seen a whopping 2,000 age 4 -8-year olds, 76 of which are now regular tennis players at the club. They turn up with equipment and a lesson plan to work with children to help improve coordination, confidence, teamwork and communication. I met with Charlie and was inspired by the work they are doing within our local community, here is what he had to say.

‘My philosophy is to let the children have fun, it’s important for children at this age to enjoy physical activity to ensure they continue with it. It’s my job as a coach to make sure the sessions are fun, engaging and super active’ "The best part of my job is to see the children that possibly wouldn’t have had the opportunity to play tennis, really enjoy our sessions and want to get involved more, this is very rewarding. The smiles and laughter from the children are also another great part of my job, if they’re laughing, I know I’m doing something right." "The children of Hasland Junior School had an outstanding day at the Tennis Roadshow. Children left the session having developed an interest in tennis and loved the coaching they received" Callum Hiron: P.E Coordinator Hasland Junior School For more information call Charlie 01246 238 798

Raising the 'Rooves' The next big thing?

Words:Nathan Hamer & the Rooves Images: Lewis Roddis & Maddie Priest

C

ut back to Easter bank holiday at the O2 Academy, Sheffield. Two friends and I went to see, possibly, the greatest band in all the seven kingdoms; The Rooves. Melodic indie riffs, perfectly blended with the unmistakable ‘Sheffield’ sound, with their ‘Jaws 2’ single being compared to the Arctic Monkeys, it’s clear these guys have the potential to go far and S40 & S41 Magazines are behind them all the way!

On the drums we have Brendon Potgieter, on guitar we have Dan Haines and Leyton Ramsdale, playing the bass is Ross Castledine and on lead vocal is Charlotte Henry.

Nathan: Firstly, thank you for taking the time to do this interview and congratulations on a great gig at the O2. So, where did you guys all meet and how long have you been together? Charlotte: We’ve been together almost two years now. We all went to the same secondary school (Brookfield Community School in Chesterfield), but it wasn’t until Sixth Form when we formed the band. Brendon, Ross and I were at a friend’s house party and I was with a couple of my mates playing the guitar and singing, just as a joke. Brendon sent Dan a video of me singing ‘Toxic’ by Britney Spears and it kind of all just took off from there. I remember him showing me a demo of ‘Games Without the Fun’ without vocals, I wrote the lyrics to it the next day and brought it to rehearsals, and that was the first song we ever wrote together!

Nathan: Hope we get to see a Toxic cover at your next gig! I like it though, and where did the name ‘The Rooves’ come from?

Dan: We needed a name for ages and our old bass player was talking to Jon McClure from Reverend and the Makers about our band, it was on the roof of The Avenue Club (Chesterfield). He suggested "The Rooves" as a name. None of us liked it at the time but it was better than just saying we had no name, so we went with it.

Nathan: That’s got to be up there in terms of most random band name stories! So, how would you describe your sound and who are your influences? Page 38

Dan: Indie rock kinda vibe but with funky guitar riffs thrown in every now and then. Brendon: We started off covering a lot of songs by ‘The Strokes’ and ‘Arctic Monkeys’ at practice and ever since then we’ve enjoyed including them in our setlists. I would say they’re our main influences. Charlotte: Or at least that’s where our sound is rooted.

Ross: Initially, we were strongly influenced by large indie rock bands as can be heard in songs like ‘Jaws II’ and ‘Nausea’. But as we began to explore our sound, we branched out becoming more individual, taking slightly jazzier inspiration from bands like ‘Boy Pablo’ and ‘Her’s’. Nathan: You can definitely hear that in your songs. So who writes the songs and where do you get your inspiration from?

Charlotte: We don’t really have a set way of writing songs; our songs seem to stem from either little guitar riffs or melodies we think sound groovy. I’d say we all contribute to this too, it’s kinda difficult writing songs now with us all being at different universities but we’re constantly sending voice memos into the group chat with new ideas. Lyrically speaking, Brendon and I wrote all the songs on our first EP together. On our more recent EP I wrote a song called ‘Blue, 1903’ which took inspiration from Picasso’s Blue Period amongst other things. Leyton: We began writing Nausea with a riff that I made about 6 months prior to finishing it. Me and Brendon weren’t fond of the song originally but decided to stick with it, luckily, as it’s one of our most popular songs to play live!

Nathan: So fortunately, there won’t be any disputes over who gets the royalties and an ‘Oasis’ style break up. Do you have any pre/post gig rituals? Ross: During our recording sessions at 2Fly in Sheffield, we’d go to eat at Nando’s during the breaks, this eventually developed into the first choice for food after soundchecks for a large majority of our gigs.

www.s41local.com

Leyton: Eating at Nando’s has become an essential part to our pre-gig routine, I’m not sure we’d play the same without it. The free beer helps too. Nathan: If you could date any musician past or present who would it be and why?

Dan: DJ Steves from Kurupt FM, he seems like a nice lad. Ross: Gotta be Cal Chuchesta for me, best teeth in the game. Who's the biggest diva in the band?

Brendon: Dan is the diva. Say no more.

Nathan: Who was your favourite teacher at Brookfield?

Leyton: It has to be Mr. Styles, he was actually in his own band called “The Recroots” and was the one who told us about 2Fly studios where we recorded our first 2 EPs.

Nathan: So, who's your tip to be the next big thing? Dan: ‘Brown Lion Zoo’ and ‘Redfaces’ are worth checking out if you haven’t heard of them. I went to 'Brown Lion Zoo’s' “Lifeline” release show in Nottingham where both bands played, and it was one of the best gigs I’ve been to.

Ross: ‘SPINN’, while having made massive leaps recently, are definitely on the brink of something huge. Really nice group of guys, it was a pleasure to have supported them last year.

Nathan: Cheers, I’ll be sure to check them out. To finish off then, what have you got coming up and where can people keep up to date? Brendon: In terms of new music, we’re releasing a new song called ‘Television’ soon. This is a track we’ve all put a lot of effort into, we spent a few days in Liverpool recording it at Sugarhouse productions, they have recorded with the likes of Pale Waves, Viola Beach, and more.

Charlotte: BBC introducing have asked us to play YNOT for them on the Friday which we’re all very excited about. Leyton: We’re also planning to do a small tour in the summer. So far, we’re playing in Nottingham early June, Manchester on the 5 August and headlining the Leadmill in Sheffield on the 9 August. Hopefully, followed by a gig in London.

Brendon: Keep up to date by checking our social media and to listen to our music just search ‘The Rooves’ on all the major music platforms.
