Hello and welcome to my absolute favourite edition of the year –December (but shh, don’t tell the others)!

The run-up to Christmas is always such a busy, exciting time for the magazine, and my diary is packed with family events and festive fun! We took Florie to see the ‘Christmas Lights Switch On’ in town, and it was absolutely buzzing with energy and excitement for the holiday season. We had delicious pancakes at Qoozies, I picked up a new book from Waterstones (Empire of the Damned – can’t wait to dive in!), Florie had a musical ride on the carousel, we admired the gorgeous Christmas trees in the Crooked Spire, and we joined Sally Anderson’s fantastic art and craft workshop on Vicar Lane. Sally is an incredibly talented artist, and we’re thrilled to have her work gracing this month’s cover! It was such a wonderful day, and we left feeling so grateful and filled with the Christmas spirit.

There is no wonder Chesterfield is the happiest place to live in the East Midlands! (Source: Right Move Index).

Winter Windows Trail

A wooden hand-finished Christmas bauble by Sally Anderson could be Yours. All you'll need to do is a bit of detective work as you enjoy the festive Winter Windows Trail.

Can you help Robin, the Christmas bird with a red breast, who's lost a bunch of Santa’s letters!

We know the letters have been lost in one of 12 businesses dotted around Chesterfield town centre, and that helpfully the lost letters have been marked on a trail map! All you've got to do is find the 12 businesses and all the letters that are painted in the windows, then figure out the festive phrase they make up. Write your answer on the trail map that’s available from any of the businesses involved and deliver your completed entry to Cawa Coffee on Low Pavements in the town centre, where you can exchange it for your hand-finished festive bauble.

Trail maps are available from all 12 businesses that have had their window painted by Sally, featuring a Robin. But please note, not all businesses are open seven days a week!

I caught up with Sally as she was putting the finishing touches to one of the windows, helped by her daughter Eve who was on work experience.

The pair of them were clearly enjoying their day, and received loads of positive comments on how great the windows looked as people passed, I couldn’t get my mother-in-law to pose for a picture as she randomly passed by though!

Sally said “I’m thrilled to be involved in this fabulous Christmas project in Chesterfield as part of the ‘Winter Windows Trail’ with Chesterfield Borough Council and Beam”.

Sally is a local illustrator with a passion for creating art that brings joy and creativity to communities. Sally has worked on everything from children’s book illustrations to large-scale murals, including an NHS mural, and is now bringing Christmas magic to Chesterfield.

The maps are available from Sunday 1 December until Thursday 6 January 2025. Whilst you’re out and about following the trail be sure to call into these fab businesses and give them your support, you can never start your Christmas shopping too early.

This project is part of the Animate Chesterfield public art programme which is being delivered by Chesterfield Borough Council in partnership with Beam, a cultural development organisation working across the North of England.

We must give a massive thanks to Sally for colouring one of her images for our Christmas cover too. I hope you love it as much as we do.

I caught up with local gents Andy Yates, Clinton Peters, and John McAssey - the team behind Board & Bean; to chat about games, food, themes, and their grand opening!

Board & Bean Café is a total vibe (as the young ones say). Imagine if Urban Outfitters served amazing cake and coffee. Walking in, I instantly felt the “cool” factor and knew this was a place I’d be coming back to again and again. From the custom gaming tables to the flickering holograms above, it’s clear this isn’t just a business - it’s a passion project, and it shows in every detail. Saying I was impressed by the lengths the team have gone to create something truly special is an understatement.

The team aimed to create not just an "Instagramable" venue, but also an accessible and inclusive space.

“We’ve created a casual, inviting space that’s fully inclusive and open to everyone,” says Andy. “We’ve put a lot of effort into making Board & Bean accessible and We’ve been consulting with neurodivergent groups to ensure we accommodate and understand that everyone has different needs.”

“it’s a chilled place where we want people to come, relax and have fun. We have created an atmosphere where people want to spend long periods of time, and return as often as they can,” adds John.

I moved onto the star of the show, cake, no, sorry the board games. With hundreds to choose from, how do we know where to start and what do the guys recommend?

“The first game that got me hooked was Small World, and it’s a great place to start if you’re after challenge, strategy, and fun!” Andy says with a smile. “At the start of the game, you’re assigned a random race and trait - you might be a flying orc, for example. The goal is to take territory from other players, which earns you coins. The player with the most territory at the end wins!”

“Playing online is fun, but nothing beats gathering with friends and family for in-person games,” says John. “A fantastic game to kick things off is Mafia De Cuba, a thrilling party game full of stolen diamonds, treachery, and deception!”

“I am obsessed with Twilight Imperium,” Clinton adds enthusiastically. It’s a galactic conquest game that requires strategy, political manoeuvring, and economic bargaining. No two-play throughs are the same, and once you have got it down, it’s amazing every time.”

With over 400 games available to play at Board & Bean, there is something for everyone. Whether it’s a works night out, an afternoon with the kids or a regular Wednesday session with friends, the guys have got you covered.

Throughout the year the team will host themed nights, ranging from movies and TV to Dungeons & Dragons, Blood on the Clock Tower and quizzes!

It was great getting to know the guys at Board & Bean and having a sneak peek at Chesterfield’s coolest new venue. I am super excited to be attending the opening night on the 30th of November and I look forward to many happy times at Board & Bean in the future with my friends and family.

After ten years behind the helm of Dream Doors and over 1,000 bespoke kitchens sold and installed, Mark and Rachael Holmes decided it’s time to move onto their next adventure; retirement and travelling.

I caught up with Mark and Rachael to talk humble beginnings, highlights, hand overs and gratitude!

Understandably, Mark and Rachael Holmes, the original owners of Dream Doors on Sheffield Road were a little emotional when discussing the handover of their wonderful, local business to Mykel and Tanya.

“When we first started Dream Doors, it was me, some samples and a van, but it wasn’t long though until we found our perfect showroom on Sheffield Road and we have had many happy years here, filled with great memories,” smiles Mark.

“I joined Mark once the showroom opened in 2015, and we have met so many amazing people and customers along the way. It’s going to be strange not getting in the car in the morning with Jasper (the family dog) and driving to the showroom,” Says Rachael with a warm tone to her voice.

Stepping into the showroom, you’re immediately welcomed by a warm, homely atmosphere that invites you to linger and explore. As the kitchen is the heart of every home, this husband-and-wife team has crafted a space that perfectly blends comfort with inspiration. It showcases the finest products Dream Doors has to offer, all while maintaining that cozy, inviting feeling of home. I would have been more than happy cooking a Sunday in there, whilst listening to Radio 6 Music!

“People spend so much time in their kitchens, and we want it to be a space they truly love,” adds Mykel. “We’re not just selling a kitchen - we’re enhancing their quality of life, uplifting their mood, and transforming how they experience their home.”

Towards the back of the showroom are an array of thank you cards from grateful customers, and it’s no surprise with a rating of 9.8 out of 10!

“We’ve received chocolates, biscuits, flowers, and wine over the years from our happy customers, and we just want to say a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of them,” says Rachael with genuine sincerity. “We’re truly grateful.”

“I will miss the look of gratitude on our customers faces, some of them have been moved to tears. Having a new kitchen is a dream for some people and I am happy to have been able to make it come true,” says Mark.

But they couldn’t have achieved this without their expert installer, Glen. A valued member of the team for over eight years, Glen’s workmanship is second to none, and he is frequently mentioned in reviews for his professionalism, friendliness, and thoughtfulness. He has played an integral role in building Dream Doors’ reputation.

Brimington residents, Mykel Hedge and Tanya Carnell are the new owners of Dream Doors Chesterfield and plan on continuing the great service that Mark and Rachael have delivered for almost a decade.

“We are excited to get started and ready for a new challenge. I am extremely happy that the wider team are staying on, including Glen,” smiles Tanya. “Mark and Rachael have worked so hard to build a sustainable, local business and we will do our very best to ensure we deliver a personal service to the highest standards,” adds Mykel.

It was an absolute pleasure meeting both the new and long-standing members of the Dream Doors team. We wish them every success for the future and are delighted to welcome them to the S40 and S41 Magazines family.

‘The Pearson’ or Pearson Park is a small patch of suburban greenery tucked between Old Hall Road, Beehive Road and Barker Lane. A place that had become a little neglected and unloved until local residents took it upon themselves to inject some love, time and energy into the space.

The park, also known as Barker Lane Park, was donated to the residents of Chesterfield by Pearson Pottery, a local pottery business established in the early 1800’s.

Steve Marriott and Kate Alvey are two of the founder members of The Friends of Pearson Park and I caught up with them at The Café at Libby’s.

Steve informed me, "The park used to be well used for football, had a small play area and had even been home to a circus, but had become run-down and undervalued."

Kate, who lives on Beehive Road, explained “There was a small garden area at the end of my street that myself and two friends had decided to tidy up, and pleased with our results we laughed that ‘the next thing is that park’.”

Susie, one of Kate's friends, contacted local councillor Jonathan Davies to see if there was any assistance the council could offer, and he helped them establish the Friends of Pearson Park (FoPP) group. The initial meeting took place in July 2023, with Steve, Kate, two of Kate's neighbours and Jan, a former local councillor.

The first job was to remove the damaged and run-down play equipment, Councillor Ron Milhaly provided £2,000, the old play area was cleared and new benches installed. Young samplings have been planted that will form a Miyawaki forest; a technique for cultivating fast-growing groves of native plants, with the dense, mixed planting intended to simulate a natural forest. This was further helped by the King's Coronation Fund that donated nine additional trees and plants that have established themselves very well.

Steve says, “In place of the old play area it already feels like the park is coming back to life, and we now see people sitting enjoying the park. The FoPP meet in the Britannia Inn where we plan activities such as working parties that have removed ivy from railings, cut back brambles and

blackberries and have helped make the park a more pleasant place to be.”

There are no plans to reinstall play equipment, the Inkerman and Monkey Parks are both close by with their facilities, The Pearson aims to offer a calmer more natural space.

The support from the council park staff and the local community has been fantastic, local primary school kids have helped plant bulbs and bluebells, Marcella from Déjà vu donated bulbs, and local businesses, Northern Tea, Fresh Ideas and others, donated raffle prizes for a Pie & Pea night at The Britannia Inn to raise funds for further Improvements.

In the immediate future a local councillor is hoping to plant an orchard where the play equipment was, they hope to widen the paths to make the park more accessible to all, and they'd like to restore the Victorian railings on Old Hall Road. “We are also looking to work with a local artist to provide some artwork to the wall space in the park,” says Steve. "So, if you know anyone who might be able to help please pass on the contact details below."

"It's amazing how a group who are passionate about the area can make a difference,” says Kate. “We started with a bit of gardening and relocating refuse bins and these small things make a change, and these lead to more. We’d love to hear from anyone who’d like to use the park, maybe for fitness boot camps, yoga sessions etc, we’ve only been going a year but we'd really like to develop an open space that can be useful and we can be proud of. I think that's what we'd all want for the area we live in."

My husband Terry and myself have been playing whist for at least twelve years in and around Chesterfield at Whist Drives. Our first encounter was when I'd recently retired - a Monday afternoon at Holymoorside Village Hall and it was run by the Holymoorside Bowls Club. Once in contact with people in the know it transpired there were Whist Drives in several areas around Chesterfield if you knew where to look.

A Whist Drive at Great Longstone was run by John Moseley from Curbar and it had been running for quite some years. When Covid hit it coincided with John becoming very ill and he felt he could not run it anymore so Terry and I took it over with another couple called Sue and Christopher Bowler who live in Sheffield.

The Monday afternoon Whist at Holymoorside no longer runs, but there is one on Tuesday afternoon.

Things escalated and after Covid we also took over the running of two other Whist Groups whose leaders felt they could not continue, one at Holymoorside Village Hall and the other was at Cutthorpe, but we have just moved to Walton Village Hall.

Pre Covid the group was very well attended. Since Covid our numbers have reduced and we are always looking for new members. A good night at a Whist Drive is, at the moment, about six tables. People attend from Matlock, Bakewell, Chesterfield, Sheffield, Priestcliffe, Great Longstone and Baslow, so quite a wide area. Currently we play at :

• Tuesday afternoon: Holymoorside Village Hall, 42 Holymoor Road, Holymoorside S42 7DX

• Friday Night: Great Longstone Village Hall, Church Lane, Great Longstone DE45 1TB

• Saturday Night: Walton Village Society Hall, Walton Back Lane, Walton S42 7LT

• Sunday Night: 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th Sunday in the month: Holymoorside Village Hall, 42 Holymoor Road, Holymoorside S42 7DX

Sessions cost £3, evening sessions run 7pm to 9:30ish and afternoon sessions 2 to 4:30pm.

Prizes are cash prizes and it depends how many attend as to what is paid out. We usually have refreshments halfway through.

Rotary Quizzers Support Ashgate Hospice

There was a full house at Loundsley Green Community Centre recently for the annual Chesterfield Rotary Quiz Night, which this year raised a record sum of £1,800 for Ashgate Hospice and some other local charities.

Chesterfield Rotary president Phil Coates said: “A big thank you goes out to all who supported the event, and congratulations goes to the 2024 winning quiz team – The Steelers. We are delighted to be helping Ashgate Hospice.”

The Chesterfield Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM RoadSmart) has a change of venue from December 2024.

Marking Christian Unity Week 18 to 25 January 2025

Christian Unity week is the traditional week of prayer where groups and different Christian churches come together to seek common ground, and share experience and appreciation for each other, often through prayer.

Paul King, from Christians Together for Chesterfield has witnessed the gradual decline on these activities and is suggesting a novel way to revive the tradition.

Paul has developed a script that can be obtained from him, see contact details below, He invites you to assemble in a small group of five people or more. His vision is that each group member will take on a role, with the full support of a script, and interview three saintspioneer Christians; Peter, Paul and Mary. One person might interview all three guests, or the roles could rotate. This could also be part of a longer or larger gathering - you can choose how to make this work for you and your group.

You could run the event in a house group, a home group or in a congregation.

You may want to have a bible handy for checking against the traditional script. And finally, you may enjoy singing the Taize Magnificat (again, music will be supplied).

I encourage groups who have done this to share in a gathering of other similar groups on Saturday 25 January 2025, and will provide further details to all who express an interest.

Swim 121 making waves for wellness with

In a stride towards inclusivity and wellness, Swim121 have announced ambitious plans to revolutionise their current site, marking two decades of excellence in swimming tuition. Their plan is to create a new purpose built swim complex, including a second 9x4m same level pool, dedicated to expanding their tuition and rehabilitation services. A new fully‐accessible, energy‐eﬃcient structure will house the reception, changing and shower areas, parent viewing and plant facilities.

We know how di cult it is to say goodbye to your beloved pet, especially if they have been part of your family for a long time.

As well as the traditional 121 tuition, the revamped facility will also allow time slots for other people or companies to hire the pool to deliver additional tuition such as physio / rehabilitation sessions, swimming for health sessions and SEN swimming.

We are dedicated to providing a personalised and caring service to all pets, big and small.

The team also plan to overhaul the forecourt parking area. This redesign will make the car park easier to access as well as increasing the parking bays from 16 to 29, including dedicated disabled bays and a bike station.

Plus we only o er certi ed individual cremations to ensure you can mark their passing with the appropriate level of dignity and respect.

Setting a new standard in aquatic wellness, the redesigned pools will boast amazing new features such as sensory lighting, tailored to accommodate individuals with sensory sensitivities. From relaxation and meditation sessions including water pilates and baby swimming, the facility will oﬀer a great range of experiences designed to engage and enrich all who walk through its doors.

Chesterfield Ladies FC The Cup Games

Welcome back to another update on Chesterfield Ladies FC. In this month's edition we take a look at the results and fixtures of the club. We also have, this time round, the blues manager, Neil Robinson under the spotlight answering my 5 questions in order to get to know the team a little bit better. As the months go by we will get to know each player of the squad.

So, let's kick off with the results.

Since the season started in September the club had climbed to the top of the league. But given the recent run of cup games, the Spireites haven't played any league games at the time of writing so have slipped a few league places as the other league teams have been playing. Currently the ladies sit in 4th place.

The last league game the ladies played was away against Mansfield Town on the 29th September. This ended goalless.

After that came the 4 continuous cup games. Firstly away against Brookside Athletic, at the Syston Memorial Ground in the first round of the League Cup. This ended 0-2 to the Blues. Goals scored by Imogen Fowler and Sophie Marshall.

Next up the Derbyshire FA County Cup against Staveley Miners Welfare. This game was featured in my article last month due to the epic result, 2-12 to Chesterfield! This was technically an away fixture but played at the Blues home ground in Staveley. Goal scorers for this one were; Fowler x6, Marshall x5 and Naylor.

On November 11th was the second round of the League Cup against River City Women's and Girls First Team. The Chesterfield Ladies lost this one 3-2 and bowed out of the cup which is unfortunate as they put-up a good fight. Goals netted for this one were from the boots of Fowler and Fiddler.

Next came the Derbyshire FA Cup against Buxton FC. This was a truly fantastic result to get back to winning ways. Naturally Fowler bagged another hat trick. Well 4 to be honest. I lose count how many goals Imogen scores! Abbie Staples scored the 5th.

Right to finish this month, I give you Neil Robinson, the club's manager. Here's my 5 quick questions answered!

What was your first football match you went to and who took you?

Sadly, I can't remember my first ever match; most likely would have been a Spireites game. I use to lie to my friends saying I went to the famous 4 all game Spireites vs Liverpool back in 92 What's your best memory playing/managing footy?

My favourite memory since coaching is easily winning the cup with my first team Spire Rangers U7s but capturing the great moment where one of our players scored his first ever goal and celebrating with his friends. Amazing and proud moment.

What's the best goal you've ever witnessed? Again memory has failed me but back at Saltergate seeing Tony Lormor score a curler from outside of the box in his Adidas predators Favourite film?

I do not have a favourite but films that I love and made a mark.

Oliver, Monty Python and the holy grail, Naked Gun and Terminator Favourite band?

No favourite but influenced by: The Darkness, The Streets, Muse and Meat loaf
