Intro
Hi and welcome to our Christmas edition.
Firstly, huge thanks to Sally Anderson at Sally Ginger Illustration for the wonderful cover, Sally's beautiful range of Christmas cards are available to purchase at Libby's of Chesterfield or from Sally's online etsy shop 'sallyandersonshop'.
Next up, I'm hoping you are reading this after lockdown two has ended, and that independent retailers and businesses have been given the go ahead to open their doors again as we hit the last three weeks before Christmas. After what has felt like a really tough time for small businesses, as big business has been allowed to trade, unfairly in my opinion. If you still have Christmas gifts to buy, now is the time to step up and support those wonderful small businesses in the area, and there are plenty in this edition. We've been running a 'SOSB Chesterfield' campaign, Support Our Small Businesses, on Facebook, showing where people can still shop online but from our independents. Go to our Facebook page for a look, and whilst you're there give us a like and follow to stay up to date with future posts.
This year our festive activities are likely to be outdoors and socially distanced and it's great to see a number of local trails available in Chesterfield. St Thomas' Angels Galore (page 75), Paperstarlights, 'Share the Light' (page 26), our competition and the Advent Trail in town (page 23) and CBC's 'Elf Trail' (page 18). Plenty of excuses to get out for some fresh air and get into the Christmas spirit. We have a packed bumper edition this month, so please enjoy all we have to offer, and I'm looking forward to being a bit less busy as we take a lengthy delay between editions. Have a fabulous and safe Christmas and New Year and we'll see you all again in 2021... goodbye 2020! Paul. T: 07764 801080 E: paul@s40local.co.uk

Chesterfield puts the magic back into Christmas Chesterfield Borough Council has launched the Christmas in Chesterfield Campaign with some brand-new Christmas experiences.
T
he council, in partnership with Destination Chesterfield, has created the magical story of the Chesterfield Elves and how they saved Christmas. The story is told through a series of Christmas experiences around Chesterfield Town Centre. The Chesterfield Elves wanted to put the fun back into Christmas after a difficult year. The elves travelled to the North Pole over the summer and brought back some magic technology, which will bring Santa to Chesterfield in a unique and Covidsafe way, as well as a few other Christmas treats for everyone to enjoy.
The elves have set up The Amazing Magical Santa House with magical technology, known as the ‘Santa Zoomer’ – a video link to chat with Santa!
The Amazing Magical Chesterfield Santa House in the Town Centre will open its doors on Saturday 5 December. As well as the chat with Santa via the video link to the North Pole, visitors can pose for an Augmented Reality experience in which Santa will magically appear. The resulting video is sent directly to the mobile phone of visitors at the end of the experience. Also launching is The Spot the Chesterfield Elf Game (Elf Trail), a fun trail around the Town Centre.
The Chesterfield Elves are letting everyone know where they live by giving a few clues to their locations. When an Elf is found, residents can scan the ‘QR Elf Code’ and gain access to a short story about the elf, as well as gift guides to Chesterfield’s fantastic range of independent shops, plus some special offers.
The full story of The Chesterfield Elves Save Christmas, can be downloaded and is the perfect bedtime story for families.
Cllr Kate Sarvent said: “While this year, there won’t be the usual large-scale events in Chesterfield Town Centre, we have created these very special and unique experiences to make Christmas in Chesterfield as fun and magical as it always is. Page 18
“It's been a tough year for many of us, and the Santa House and Spot the Chesterfield Elf Game, will bring plenty of fun and show that Chesterfield can still celebrate Christmas.
“Public safety remains our priority and the Santa House experience has been designed to be Covidsafe. But can I ask everyone to play their part by wearing a face covering, social distance and follow the latest guidance, by doing these few things, we will all have an enjoyable and healthy Christmas.” Residents and visitors to Chesterfield will also be welcomed and wowed by our improved Christmas lighting, across the town centre, including redressed tree lights and snow fall light features.
Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield said “In these challenging times it's never been more important to support each other. I am delighted that Destination Chesterfield and Chesterfield Borough Council have continued this year to work collaboratively on the Christmas in Chesterfield Campaign. Combining our efforts reinforces the Support Local message. Making the decision to choose an independent retailer for your gifts and food both now and beyond the pandemic will make a huge difference to our high street.” Visits to the Amazing Magical Chesterfield Santa House must be pre-booked via: www.chesterfield.gov.uk/christmas www.chesterfield.co.uk/christmas The Santa House opens on Saturday 5 December and each Saturday and Sunday until 20 December. There is no charge to visit but spaces are limited, watch out for extra dates bring announced. The Christmas lights are on and The Spot the Chesterfield Elf Game launches on 7 December.
Full details on everything happening this Christmas, including gift guides and shopping offers for our many unique and independent shops can be found at the web sites above.

Business Intro
Lumberjack Games A local, online alternative to the web giants for your board games and more.
L
Words: Paul Chapman
umberjack Games is a relatively new business offering a local, independent service from their base in Walton, selling board games online, delivered to your door.
No matter what our best intentions to shop local and support independent retailers it can be quite difficult, so it's exciting to find someone providing a local online alternative and making it easy for us. Lumberjack Games is husband and wife team, Gareth and Katie. The pair are well known locally as members of a local church and Gareth, in a previous role, sat next to me at S40 Local helping with design work.
Lumberjack Games launched in January this year ... and we all know what happened on 23 March 2020 (if you need reminding it was the start of lockdown). Great timing as we all looked for ways to keep ourselves entertained whilst being stuck at home.
'10p from each order goes to Home for Good, a UK based charity committed to finding homes for vulnerable children and families' Gareth Simmonds Gareth is keen to point that "We're not real life Lumberjacks, but the idea of living in a cabin in the woods certainly appeals to us, mostly so we could light a fire and play a good board game without worrying about any phones buzzing or TVs blaring. If you're anything like us, you long to get back to the basics, when life was much simpler, and sleep came much easier.
"Our aim is to make life easy for you. We want it to be easy to find a game to suit everyone, whether you're a hard core
Page 22
board game nut, or you're a regular Jack who hasn't played a game in 20 years. Hopefully our website is really easy to find your way around, and really easy to see something you might fancy." To sum the business up perfectly - they're friendly, a kick back at technology - using the tag #GoodOldFamilyFun - spot on.
Gareth and Katie know that not everyone has the privilege of a loving family to spend their evenings and weekends with. Every year over 40,000 children in the UK have to go into care, to put that into perspective, that's one child every 15 minutes. So 10p from each order goes to Home for Good, a UK based charity committed to finding homes for vulnerable children, and supporting families. They also aim to ship responsibly using recyclable or reusable packaging.
Please see the advert below for contact details and think of them for your Christmas shopping. The cut-off for orders to get to you before Christmas is 22 December, and they aim to deliver all local orders the same or next working day. A big thank you to Lumberjack Games for offering two games packs as prizes in the competition on the page opposite, one for children and one for adults.

Share the Light Paperstarlights Words: Paul Chapman In the last year we've witnessed the way that adversity can bring out the best in some people.
Andy Jupp and Jules Cooper, the team at Paperstarlights, are working hard to 'Share the Light' this Christmas, with more than a little help from their colleague and friend Paul Hoskin. Over the next few weeks the team will be out and about helping as many businesses as they can to create bespoke displays of light in their windows.
As I type the windows along Chatsworth Road are already starting to shine with stars and it won't be long before the windows at our own home will be shining with stars, too.
Andy says, "with all of our Christmas markets and events cancelled this year, we’re struggling like so many independent businesses. So we’re working closer to home, and have put aside a number of display units for local businesses, to loan free of charge this Christmas. All we ask is that you make a donation to Ashgate Hospicecare, to help share the light with them too." Please look out for the stars, why not take a walk after sunset to see how many starsyou can spot. Businesses right across the town will be taking part. The stars come in over 100 designs and different sizes – see how many you can find.
Be sure to take photographs and #sharethelight via social media and if you're in town check out page 23 and also be on the look out for Advent Town displays so you can enter our easy giveaway. I'm looking forward to a lovely themed trail and displays across town, something that will put Chesterfield on the map and help create a little festive cheer as Santa gets his sleigh ready for 25th. See page 77 for our Paperstarlights tree from 2017.
Huge thanks from us all at S40 Local to Andy, Jules and Paul for Sharing the Light. Andy can be contacted on 07803 164394. #sharethelight

ental Health is an important topic at the moment, it’s important any time, but when faced with periods of isolation from family, friends and loved ones, as COVID restrictions are placed upon us, it jumps a level in priority.
Paul Oxborough is a man from Chesterfield who works in organisations that make a change and when he lost a close friend to suicide, he decided it was time to get busy. “My background is in youth and community work,” says Paul. “I started my professional career at a comprehensive school in Milton Keynes, I was the interface between the formal education in school and the things that the students got up to outside of school. We ran a youth club that brought children together and helped find ways to engage them in education when things weren’t going as well at school. “We had around 120 children each night in the club and I became good friends with many of the families, staying in touch via social media after moving away from the area.” “One of the group had qualified as a vet but suffered from a condition called Marfans Syndrome, an inherited disorder that affects connective tissue - the fibres that support and anchor your organs and other structures in your body.
“In his 30s, he took his own life using veterinary drugs to administer selfeuthanasia. Although most people with the condition live into their 70s, he didn’t want to be a stress on his family and those around him.” Unfortunately, with suicide this is a common theme, people not wanting to be a burden on anyone. “It’s a shocking fact that so many brilliant people take their own lives. I was chatting to a close friend of mine, Jay Lucas, and we decided something had to be done,” explains Paul.
Paul’s background in youth and community work, presently with the EU Erasmus programme, equips him to help make a difference, plus he’s been a keen motorcyclist for over 30 years. Paul and Jay developed the Mental Health Motorbike project and set about launching it in March… just as COVID struck.
“We went to a bike show in December 2019 with the idea and were overwhelmed with the response,” says Paul. “We had a number of other events planned that were cancelled so decided to take it online. We set up a members-only Facebook group so people could talk openly, it’s fast become a vibrant space for nearly 700 people to talk about their mental health. We promote it in a positive way and have a sympathetic group of moderators who ensure things stay on topic, no wandering off into online arguments or inappropriate discussions.
“In April, the group quickly grew to around 400 members for a few weeks then seemed to snowball after this. We’ve had about 28 people present themselves at point of suicide since March, the group is set up so we can spot key words and in these situations we can take people off into a one-to-one chat to get them to a more stable state before involving other support agencies. “At the moment, many people are feeling isolated and the group helps people find a place to come, the love of bikes is the glue that holds us together it brings people together to chat, arrange ride-outs and meet ups. It’s a lot more than a simple Facebook group, it really has saved lives already in its short existence.”
Paul was keen to explain that not everyone involved has a bike but it’s this connection that brings them together. The group now has over 2,500 members, 12 moderators, 52 Ambassadors and another 2,800 people involved with fundraising. It’s been so successful it has the backing of Bennetts Insurance, one of the biggest names in motorcycle insurance cover. “We have a ‘virtual rideout’ on Sundays at 7pm, a chance for people to get together, we usually have a theme or guest, such as Motorbike Milly, a dog who travels on a bike, biker celebrities like this help us spread our reach for MHM and what we’re doing,” explains Paul.
In parallel to the group, MHM member Andy Elwood, previously a military helicopter medic, runs the MHFA England mental health first aid course and since September has trained 26 new first aiders.

Wellbeing It’s a blended learning course run through Zoom and throughout 2021 the group aims to train a further 250 people to be part of the first free national dedicated mental health support service for the biker community. The trained first aiders are then added to a database and an interactive map which will eventually cover the whole of the UK. Today 52 ambassadors are in place. “The group is about the long-term wellbeing of our members, getting to the root cause of issues, isolation and providing long term opportunities as volunteers once they are in a better place,” says Paul.
Next year in May, MHM plans a 3000+ mile baton relay event involving 1000’s of bikers and celebrities across the UK, calling in at bike dealerships and related businesses where they hope to get companies and organisations to sponsor the Mental Health First Aid course for their staff. The Mental Health First Aid course saves lives by giving a sympathetic ear and support for people in need. It’s exciting times ahead for the group and if you want to see what they’re all about or could volunteer your assistance they can be found at:

ostas and Mike have been close friends for many years, in fact Mike helped Kostas set up the fabulously authentic Odyssey Greek Restaurant in town. Their shared passion for the finer things in life such as food and art has led to them opening a second venture, Zero Tattoo Gallery. Walking past Zero Tattoo Gallery, on the outside of the market hall, you’d be forgiven for thinking it’s a fine art gallery. In fact, this is exactly the look they are going for. “Traditional tattoo studios have been a little on the dark side, we wanted to offer something different and classy. At Zero we want people from all walks of life to come in, feel ‘wowed’ and yet at home,” says Kostas Kostas and Mike have always had a passion for art, and it shows in the décor. Entering the gallery is a veritable feast for the eyes. The walls are adorned with art created by both local, and international artists and many of the furnishings have been made to order by local crafts people such as Elphius Flux on Crow Lane.
Zero Tattoo Gallery is set across two floors with the ground floor currently being developed into an art gallery. The team have big plans and intend to use this space to support aspiring artists and students from Chesterfield College. “Downstairs will be our art gallery. It’s our aim to showcase some of the country’s, and Chesterfield’s top talent. We will display and sell pieces by artists including tattooists, ceramicists, fine artists and sculptors, and we intend to work with Chesterfield College to put on regular exhibitions of their student’s work. It’s important to us to do our bit to help Chesterfield’s budding artists and give them a stage to showcase some of the amazing work they do,” says Mike. Zero Tattoo Gallery offer a unique, 360 experience from consultation to tattoo and aftercare, in a relaxed and comfortable atmosphere. Whether it’s your first or 30th tattoo, the team at Zero are on hand with expert advice, guidance and of course, an abundance of talent! So why not pop in for a chat, enjoy the art and make your next tattoo, a Zero tattoo. Oh, and did we mention the coffee is rather good as well?
The team consists of Mike, Kostas and local artist, Meg. Meg is a lifelong Cestrefeldian and has been a professional tattooist since 2018. Meg comes from a realism background and has found a love for traditional and neo traditional styles, using colour and dot-work whilst tattooing

ike Sklavenitis, lead artist and co-owner of Zero Tattoo Gallery, is this month’s front cover artist over at sister publication S41 Local with the image opposite. Born and raised on a beautiful Greek island, we caught up with Mike to find out about his inspirations, what he likes about living in Chesterfield and his wonderful creation of John Hurt as Santa!
Mike has been an artist for as long as he can be remember, creating pieces for his family since he was a toddler and winning competitions as a student. As a teenager, he became competent with a spray can and developed into quite the graffiti artist. We asked him about his early influences.
"Ino is a famous mural artist, undertaking commissions all over the world, he started out as a graffiti artist many years ago when it had a bad name and was arrested several times. Now street art is everywhere, and Ino is a well-respected artist. His art really communicates with his audience and has a strong message," says Mike. "I like so many famous, historical fine artists, but one who stands out to me is El Greco, a Greek painter from the 16th century. His use of colours is very dramatic which has influenced my way of working.” Like many people, Mike had his first tattoo as a teenager, but with a difference - he did it on himself! "I still have my first tattoo, it’s bad! I had already made up my mind that I was going to be a tattoo artist, so I wanted to see how much it hurt, it hurts haha! I have kept it as it is my first one, but I am sure I will get it covered at some point." Growing up on a small, less affluent island in Greece, Mike knew that earning a living as a tattoo artist was going to be tough. "I have always done fine art and even won a few competitions back in Greece as a young man. Making money as a fine, or tattoo, artist where I lived was unlikely, so I studied graphic design at college and then university. Page 38
I worked as a graphic designer for a good few years whilst tattooing on the side, friends and family etc… slowly, through word of mouth, momentum grew and I was able to quit my graphic design job and become a fulltime tattoo artist."
Mike’s ambition and talent as a tattoo artist took him to London where he lived and worked, honing his skills, learning from some of the best in the business, before moving to Chesterfield, which he now calls home.
"I love living in Chesterfield, it has the best of both worlds. I am never far away from the hustle and bustle of many of England’s greatest cities, yet I love living the quiet life in Chesterfield and enjoying the Peak District. I am very happy here." Over at S41 Local, Simon set Mike the challenge of designing their Christmas front cover, asking him to combine two things: something ‘Chesterfieldy’ and ‘Christmassy’.
"I did a lot of research on the history of Chesterfield, famous landmarks and people. My research led me to world famous actor John Hurt, who sadly died in 2017. As a tribute to the late Chesterfield-born actor, I made him into Santa. I hope your readers like it. It was fun to create." I am sure you’ll agree Mike’s John Hurt Santa is a fantastic piece of work, and we wish Mike and all the team at Zero Tattoo Gallery a very merry Christmas. When something has to be done. Words: Louise Hepplewhite
“
When this is over, and it will be over, we want to look back at this moment and remember the small acts of kindness done by us and to us… ...how we first thought of others and acted with decency.”
The words of Rishi Sunak on 23 March 2020 when lockdown was announced resonated with Kelly Hall and her daughter Grace, who decided they must do something to support the local community, in particular the elderly, vulnerable, those on furlough or who had lost their jobs and were struggling to put food on the table.
were already delivering food parcels through their taxi service, and Gussie’s Kitchen, who offer food parcels from St Augustine’s church and had been preparing cooked meals for individuals.
Food parcels will be given to anyone who needs one, without judgement or discrimination, be it as a stop gap whilst waiting for benefits or to the elderly or vulnerable who are isolating. As Kelly says, "You will be greeted with a huge smile and enough food to keep you lovely people going. We are in this together and whilst ever we can, we will always support anyone that should ever need us." They very quickly built up the trust of DCC, Morrison's, Voluntary Action, Social Services and Community Mental Health teams who passed on referrals for their food parcels.
The Food Hut is here to stay, they were here throughout the first lockdown and were given their permanent premises in Dunston by Chesterfield Borough Council in July. This promises to be a centre where people of all ages can socialise, garden and meet for organised activities, once the pandemic allows for mixing.
This incredible team of volunteers hasn’t taken a break since March, working tirelessly to feed those in need and also helping those who come into the centre looking for clothes, toiletries and additional support, referring people to other services where necessary. They’ve also put together free lunch boxes to help children during the school holidays. Demand has increased again through the second lockdown. "We recognise the need for this service to continue alongside the other voluntary organisations in and around Chesterfield." Kelly would like to pass on thanks to everyone involved in the project, and in particular to the Chesterfield Labour Party and Cllr Janice Marriott. Kelly posted her vision on the Facebook Covid-19 Chesterfield Support network page and within hours had been offered premises from Natalie Bahlaj, a local business owner who could no longer continue to trade due to lockdown. ‘Without Natalie, the Food Hut would never have got off the ground,’ says Kelly. Then along came Chell Whiteley and they were now ready to set up the Chesterfield Community Food Hut. The determination of a small team of volunteers, putting in the hours working to source donations, and pack and deliver food parcels throughout Chesterfield has allowed them to hand out an estimated 11,000 food parcels to date. Kelly credits the success to the invaluable decision to team up with Door 2 Door Taxis, who unbeknownst to her, Page 42
They are always desperate for donations and, as the Christmas season approaches, have put together the reverse advent calendar overleaf which suggests items you may want to collect in the run up to Christmas and to donate to the Food Hut in time for the big day. Grace Box is an initiative that Grace Chapel is running every Tuesday from 10am to 12pm. We are giving away boxes of groceries. We can deliver in emergencies if a person is not well or is isolating because of Covid 19 restrictions. We at Grace Chapel are seeking to reach out into our community to show the love of God at this difficult time. So far we have given out over 100 Grace boxes. There is no shame in needing help, many have lost jobs because of Covid 19 and people do not need to feel embarrassed about needing help during this current pandemic. Many families are struggling financially. Grace Chapel is working in partnership with the Love Thy Neighbour (LTN) initiative. Death of the Chesterfield Accent:
“Cheese” vs “Chays”. Words: Claire Ashmore Illustration: Paul Chapman
L
anguage, particularly accent, changes over time. Some may have noticed the influence of London in “fing” (thing) and “fought” (thought), innit? Or, the rising intonation that many would associate with Australia. But while we’re great at noticing incoming features to the Chesterfield accent, we might not be so good at recognising what the Chesterfield accent is, or remembering what it was. Some people say that there isn’t a Chesterfield accent. Others say that it sounds “lazy”, like we’re all farmers, and “friendly” yet “aggressive”! Most mention the “aye up mi ducks” and “youth”. Some go as far as to say it’s the same as the Sheffield accent, or is becoming that way. Bolsover poet, J.R. Booker, wrote about Chesterfield/Sheffield differences in his poem, Fishin’ Dee-Dars (written sometime in the late twentieth or early twenty-first century). He begins:
Now, from Spiretown to Sheffield it’s only about 10 miles, As the crow flies, it’s not very far, But folk theer arnt Chezzies, they don’t talk like us, Thas entered the Land of Dee-Dar… Booker suggests that despite Chesterfield’s close proximity to Sheffield, people from Sheffield (Dee-Dars) speak differently to Chesterfield natives. However, he ends the poem joking that his Dee-Dar pal, Al, had influenced his own accent: Page 46
I asked how he’d gone on fishing “Net full” he said, “And I’ve fished wi’ chays all day” He’s got me this time. Squats, pinkies- I know ‘em all, But what on God’s Earth is a CHAY? ... Weeks later, summat happened, And the twirling finally stopped Al were locked art – he’d forgot his door-KAYS, At last, at last! I could feel the penny as it dropped! Al was a Dee-Dar rate enough, It was Sheffield he was born and bred in, Now I’ve put COIL in HOIL, I’ll have to gerra WESH, Oh, my God – Dee Dar is spreading!! This poem is funny, tongue-in-cheek, and observant. Whether Chesterfield accents are just like Sheffield accents is something that I’m exploring in my research, but I don’t think I’ll give the ending away if I say they’re not quite the same. While researching this, I found some interesting historical data about one aspect of Chesterfield’s accent that seems to have died out: The way that we pronounce “ee”. The oldest record I’ve found about the pronunciation of “ee” in Chesterfield is from the 1880s/1890s in Samuel Pegge’s “Two Collections of Derbicisms” based on his observations from Old Whittington. Interestingly, Thomas Hallam wrote here that “the dialect of Whittington
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
was representative in the 1880s/90s of the dialect area beginning in the north with Dore and Dronfield, extending south through Whittington, Chesterfield, Brampton, and Ashover, and ending in the south with Alfreton and South Wingfield” (p. xxv). Pegge observed that: “ee is ẽi; feit, feet; cheise, cheese; apeice, apiece; especially in the Peak.” (p.ix) While difficult to decipher, I think Pegge meant that something like “fate” is used for feet, “chays” for cheese, and “apace” for apiece. This suggests that the “ay” sound is used in words that usually have the “ee” sound across a large area of Chesterfield. A much later record of this same pronunciation comes from a magazine produced for Robinson and Sons, called The Link. In March 1932, The Link published an article entitled “Broad Brampton” written by a member of staff using the pseudonym “Evitan” (which is “native” backwards). S/he comments on the unique nature of “Broad Brampton”, which s/he suggests was at one time different from the rest of Chesterfield (p.11). Evitan observes that the Sheffield dialect “encroaches” from the north as does the Mid-Derbyshire dialect from the south (p.11), so even then accent change was an issue. Yet, one example given of a then-surviving “Brampton” variant is the pronunciation of meat as “meight” (or “mate”). Together with Pegge’s observations, this suggests that the “ay” for “ee” pronunciation had been around since the 1880s, but was once wider spread across Chesterfield than they had realized. It’s possible that by the 1930s this feature had already started to die out, and was then local to Brampton but, potentially, the writer just hadn’t realized how widespread it remained.
Chesterfield, but there is a recording of a Youlgreave farmer, who was born in 1879, made in 1955. Pegge had noted that the “ay” sound instead of “ee” was typical of “the Peak” in the 1880s, and it can still be heard in this farmer’s voice in the 1950s. The farmer can be heard to say nineteen as “ninetayn”, which appears to adhere to both Pegge and Evitan’s descriptions. It would make sense for this pronunciation to have died out first in the accents of central Chesterfield, where visitors from all over Derbyshire and beyond would have visited its markets, potentially influencing pronunciation, but remain longer in the speech of people in more isolated rural areas. But finally, one thing does still bother me: Wasn’t J.R. Booker confused by his Sheffield pal’s pronunciation of cheese as “chays”? He thought this was a Sheffieldism, but might it once also have belonged to us Chezzies? After all, Pegge noted that the “Whittington” dialect extended as far as Dore; it’s not impossible to imagine this feature extending further to the land of Dee-Dar. Maybe we’re not so different, after all? Finally, if you know anyone who still speaks this way, please contact me at C.Ashmore@shu.ac.uk
One of the final examples of this pronunciation is from the 1950s, for the Survey of English Dialects (SED). The SED interviewed mostly elderly males from rural areas across England, because this was where traditional dialects were thought to survive. No one was interviewed in Excerpts of Fishin’ Dee-Dar published with thanks to the family of J.R.Booker. References: Booker, J.R. (N.D.). Fishin’ Dee-Dars. Many of you will recognise the name Gareth Richards as the man behind the long established and well-respected GR Glazing. In fact, a lot of you will have had new windows, doors or a conservatory fitted by Gareth and his team. Gareth’s passion for transforming properties into stylish homes has led him to his latest venture, GRend. Established in 2020, GRend are quickly becoming the go-to company for property rendering in Chesterfield and the surrounding area. Gareth set about hiring the very best renderers in Derbyshire and it shows in the quality of work and finish. What is rendering and is it right for me? House rendering is a form of cladding applied to the outside of a home, in the same was as plaster is applied to interior walls. Rendering comes in a variety of colours and materials and Gareth and the team are on hand with expert advice to ensure you choose the right one for you, and your home.
g rend
There are two main reasons to have your home rendered: Appearance Rendering the exterior of a home will brighten up the property and give it a new lease of life. It can hide tired old brickwork and a join where a new extension meets the existing property. Render comes in a variety of colours and finishes and can be tailored for both traditional and contemporary styles of houses, with options to suit most budgets. Protection and insulation Rendering the outside of a house protects the brickwork from the elements, which over time can look tired, worn and stop providing the insulation it once did. In addition to cavity wall insulation there are several types of render that provide that extra bit of warmth during the winter months, helping reduce fuel bills, saving you money. So whether you are looking to give your home a makeover and/ or insulate your house, Gareth and the team at GRend are on hand to help. Call Gareth today for a no obligation chat and make your house a beautiful home.

Pensions: the ultimate savings incentive
O
K. I admit it. Pensions definitely aren’t the most interesting topic of conversation for the majority (apart from us independent financial advisors, that is!).
Just the mention of the ‘p’ word and people have the tendency to switch off or change the subject. That’s usually because the discussion becomes technical, long-winded and ultimately, boring. There are plenty more inspiring and motivating things to talk about, I get that. However, what if I told you that if you take out a pension and contribute to that pension, the Government will contribute too? Yes, you read that right. The Government, or more precisely, HMRC, will pay into your pension every time you do. Time for the maths bit. Stay with me! Tax relief on pension contributions is often described as '20% tax relief'. If, for instance, someone earns £100 through an employer, and decides to have it paid into their pension and not into their bank account, the 20% they would have been taxed no longer applies, and the full £100 is paid into their pension. However, if you’re a basic rate taxpayer and you're making the contribution (rather than it being paid via your employer), an £80 contribution will instead be topped up by HMRC to £100. So, an £80 contribution is in actual fact increased by 25% when paid into a pension. And that's before the money's even invested see, the ultimate savings incentive!
Now ask yourself another question: what would be an adequate amount of money to live on when I retire? Chances are you’ll have no clue what that figure is. That’s where we come in. By discussing your expectations, putting together a forecast based on how much you can contribute, we will put you in an informed position. We'll provide you with a lower level figure of what you might expect when you retire, and a higher level figure; both dependent on how your pension is expected to perform. And it's our job to make sure you know how much you could expect to have when you retire. No one can see into the future but, here at Jones & Co, we can certainly help you maximise your money and be financially ready to make the most of your retirement when it arrives. Contributing little and often into a pension is by far the most manageable way to save for your retirement. So, to find out how you can do that with bespoke financial advice, please don’t hesitate to contact me or one of my colleagues for a FREE consultation. Email: kirk@ifajonesandco.uk, call 01246 550521 or simply pop into our offices on Glumangate in Chesterfield. We promise to make pensions exciting!
If you’re a higher rate taxpayer, as well as getting 20% tax relief, you will also be able to claim back up to a further 20% from HMRC, dependent on your earnings. This is technically considered to be '40% tax relief', but in reality it could be an increase on your taxed earnings of as much as 67%! There aren't many places you can get 67% growth in a single day! So, irrespective of your income, paying into a pension is undoubtedly a win-win. If you don’t already have a pension (if you’re employed, your employer should have given you the opportunity to take part in their auto-enrolment pension scheme) or you don’t currently contribute, you should start to. Now. See above. To look at it all another way. The average state pension currently stands at £9,110 per annum*. The average UK salary is £29,009**. When you retire, ask yourself: could I live on £9,110 a year? That’s a drop of £20,000 a year. Could you continue with your present standard of living? I imagine your answer will be a resounding ‘no’.

aving moved to ground-floor, more expansive premises at 362 Chatsworth Road (the old Chatsworth Motor Spares unit) earlier this year, iDeal Flooring has significantly enhanced the shopping experience for its ever-growing band of loyal customers. Ideal Flooring is a firmlyestablished, family-run and independent flooring business. Joint partners, Kevin Howarth and Callum Virgillio, are both born and bred in Chesterfield. Between them they have a wealth of experience in the carpet and flooring

industry, which enables them to offer a fantastic personal service.
Callum oversees all the installations personally. Customers can have peace of mind that everything will be managed to exacting standards by one of the partners. A key member of Callum's team is apprentice fitter, Nathan Howarth, Kevin's son. Kevin manages the showroom and deals with all the customers at the outset. This means that there's always an immediate point of contact and a friendly voice at the end of the phone.

iDeal are now recognised as a Karndean Design Flooring showroom, one of the biggest-name luxury vinyl tile (LVT) flooring manufacturers. Karndean’s flooring enhances any room with its natural look and feel and added practical benefits. "It's quiet underfoot, easy to clean, warm, comfortable and extremely hard wearing'" says Kevin. "That's why we're proud to offer a comprehensive range of Karndean - from Knight Tile to Van Gogh. Customers can take advantage of the design service and make use of the Karndean design table, giving you the opportunity to build flooring ideas and experiment with borders and design strips to create a fully bespoke floor."
Following the move and the addition of the Karndean brand, Kevin and Callum are justifiably excited about their future prospects. "We now have the perfect outlet to expand our flooring business," says Kevin. "We can offer our customers much more choice in a far more accessible showroom with ample free parking. And the gaining of the Karndean brand is the ultimate feather in the cap. As you can see, we pride ourselves on the quality of our products. and personal service."
iDeal Flooring also stock a whole host of quality LVT brands, including Project Floors, Fusion, LG Hausys and Polyflor. In vogue at the moment is herringbone-patterned LVT, and iDeal offer over 30 styles, with something to please everyone. "We also stock Egger laminate flooring," Kevin adds. "A stylish, durable and high-quality European flooring option. Made from sustainable sourced wood and coming in a range of styles and thicknesses, Egger starts at £8.99 per sqm., representing excellent value for money."
On display, and available to take away, or for fitting, are many samples of two- and three-metre wide vinyls starting from £7.99 per sqm. The engineered wood range includes premiumgrade ranges from Xylo and V4, top-of-the-range flooring that starts from £36.99 per sqm.
If it's carpets customers are looking for, the selection of wools and polypropylenes in a range of patterns and plains ensures the right choice for every taste and budget. "Wherever possible, we try and buy British," says Kevin. "We use quality manufacturers, such as Furlong, Penthouse, Gaskell, Kingsmead, Whitestone Weavers, who supply 100% stain-free carpets, and Invictus Soft Touch, our best seller. We price competitively with roll stock available from £4.99 per sqm. We have room-size roll ends on display from just £40. We offer special discounts for full-house carpeting and flooring requirements, and what's more, on all fittings of carpets in excess of £11.99 per sqm., we offer free underlay, free gripper, free door bar and free delivery! As with everything we stock, a superb fitting service is always readily available. "A new showroom addition is artificial grass, starting at just £6.99 per sqm. Artificial grass is extremely versatile and will improve the look of any sized space, including shady areas where real turf struggles to thrive or grow. This includes balconies, terraces, pool areas, and even indoor areas. A professional fitting service is available from experienced landscape gardeners."

GSM Electrical Supplies A community focused family business Words: Simon Paterson Images: GSM Electrical Supplies
A
fter 25 year’s working for a national electrical supply company, local family man, John Millward decided to start his own. He had always had dreams of being his own boss and in 2012, that dream came true. Like most local, independent ventures, GSM Electrical Supplies had a modest start. With a small budget and a big dream, John found some shared office space in Sheepbridge and the next day GSM Electrical Supplies was born.
It didn’t take long for John’s hard work, diligence and experience to pay off. In 2013 he was able to expand operations and opened his very own store in Holmewood, creating several jobs in the local area, but John didn’t stop there.
Fast forward to the present day and GSM Electrical Supplies have just expanded operations (again) and have a new store on Whitting Valley Road, creating jobs and further strengthening our local community. Even more impressive than GSM’s rapid growth is their current list of customers, including Sainsbury’s, Tesco and the NHS, fantastic! John’s not only created jobs for the people of Chesterfield, but for his daughter Lucy as well. Lucy started working for her dad about three years ago whilst studying speech therapy at Sheffield University. She needed a part-time job whilst attending uni and her good old dad stepped in. Lucy quickly learnt the family business and fell in love with it, she now leads on digital media and marketing, has recently completed a course at the Digital Marketing Institute and has some big plans for the future of GSM Electrical Supplies. We asked Lucy what is it like having her dad as a boss and what she loves about working for GSM?
"I never realised just how hard my dad worked until I started here. My respect and admiration for him, for all he’s achieved is immeasurable. Plus, it’s brought us a lot a closer and I get to see my dad everyday which is great! Page 56
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
"The best thing about leading on the media and advertising side of things is meeting new people and supporting our communities. We recently sponsored a ‘Wish Upon A Star’ event and have just started sponsoring the Chesterfield Town FC under 10s football team which my son plays for. We plan to do more community initiatives soon, it’s always good to give a little back."
"Being a creative person, I enjoy creating content for our social media pages. At first it was a tough nut to crack, trying to make engaging posts about light bulbs and electrical cables haha, but I feel I’ve cracked it now," laughs Lucy. GSM Electrical Supplies have a range of products in store including bulbs, lamps, cables, switches, sockets and junction boxes - you name it, they sell it!
GSM provided an essential front-line service during the lockdown phase of the pandemic, supplying not only some the UK’s largest supermarkets, but the NHS as well, shipping electrical products up and down the country at a moments notice to popup hospitals, ensuring supply met demand.
"At the moment our priority is to get our new Whitting Valley Road branch up, running and busy! For the long term we’re hoping to open another branch in a different town. Personally, I’d like to get more golf in, all work and no play is ruining my short game!" Whether you are an electrician by trade or looking to make some home improvements, John, Lucy and the team are on hand to help. From bulbs to sockets, cables to switches, GSM Electrical Supplies have got you covered. Business Intro
Meet Steve Maloney: Chesterfield’s record-breaking gold and diamond miner. Words: Simon Paterson Images: Steve Maloney
T
he accolade of ‘local legend’ is probably used more than it should be, but not in Steve’s case! From gold and diamond mining, to setting world records, Steve Maloney from Newbold has done it all. For as long as he can remember, Steve's been digging holes. Now with over 40 years’ experience, Steve is the go-to guy for training, advice, guidance and equipment hire with his new business Steves Diggers! Following in his father’s footsteps, Steve decided from a young age that he was going to be an excavator operator, a decision that has taken him all over the world. “Stick a pin in a world map and I’ve probably been there,” Steve says. Steve’s mining career started back in 1979, open cast mining in Staveley as a teenager. "I’d see all
Page 58
the experienced staff operating the big machinery and every day I’d pester the line manager asking him to let me have a go and he’d say, ‘Steve you’re too young’". Eventually, Steve was offered the opportunity to work on one of the ‘big ones’ on a job in Stoke. Steve’s passion for machinery and hard graft quickly saw him reach the top of his profession. A German company visiting the UK sites to see some of their equipment in action was so impressed with the skill and speed at which Steve operated, they approached Steve’s boss and asked if they could borrow him. This led to Steve being flown all over the world to demonstrate some of the world’s leading excavation technology and, later, achieving a WORLD RECORD!
www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
In 1997 Steve was flown out to Canada to test and operate a prototype hydraulic face shovel.
"On the 25 December 1997, starting at 7am and finishing at 7pm, I moved over 10,000 tonnes per hour of material. This was classified as a world first and the record still stands to this day. It was tough but the adrenaline kept me going and I could hear people over the two-way radio saying, ‘Keep going Steve, this is incredible!’ I’ll never forget that day." Steve has mined almost every conceivable material; gold, diamonds, uranium and platinum.
"My experience of Diamond mining was amazing. I was in Lac de Gras, a diamond mine in Diavik (Canada), it’s surrounded by water, so you fly in and fly out, like in the movies. In the wintertime it’s so cold the sea freezes over and you drive across, going across in the pick-up truck is a sight to behold, it’s strikingly blue and clear. Every truck I loaded had over £800,000 of diamonds in it! Unfortunately, I haven’t stashed any for retirement!"
and has recently launched his own business in Chesterfield, the aptly named Steves Diggers. Steve made the decision to start his own equipment hire business after being stuck in Mali, Africa, for four months during the first lockdown, and is really enjoying tutoring his customers, who include builders, landscapers and DIYers. When hiring excavation equipment from Steve’s Diggers not only do you get the best machinery, but the best advice and guidance in the world.
We know who we will be coming to when it’s time to look for gold in the garden, digging holes for decking or patios, or clearing the way for that dream extension or conservatory.
The demand for Steve’s experience has seen him travelling all over the world and for five years in a row, he only spent 27 days at home in Chesterfield. He is a consultant and trainer for HMS Dortmund in Germany and Caterpillar,

Up, Down, On, Off… Our children’s educational experiences are extremely varied in these exceptional times. Some children are happily settling into school life and recapturing the learning ground they lost during lockdown; others are bouncing in and out of quarantine as a class member, or more often a teacher, tests positive for Covid. Kip has some students who have been repeatedly out of their main school but at least at Kip they can do online lessons to keep them on track. So what on earth can parents do to help their children through this? Well there is the catch up grant that schools can utilise for students who have slipped badly behind, but it is cash limited and many of the middle level students won’t be offered it. With GCSE exams being delayed an extra three weeks and the curriculum being cut back it will help in some ways but a student in quarantine has to be able to work in isolation, assuming they have the technical equipment to do that. Kip has a superb programme in place for Maths and both English GCSEs and a track record of improved results on predicted grades. If England goes the way of Wales and scraps exams in favour of teacher assessment then time to improve your child’s ability is surely NOW and not hope they can perform in a June exam. Another area of concern for many parents is the SATs exam in May for year 6 students. These results are a measurement of the school performance but are also passed onto the secondary schools to give an idea of a student’s abilities for allocating sets. With this ‘in and out’ of school likely to last until the spring, children will be performing at varying levels of their true pre-Covid lockdown abilities.
As we mentioned in our last article Kip worked through the summer with just over 70 students on the catch up programme and each student had merely 10 hours of tuition. The results all quantifiable, provable and presented as individual reports to the body which commissioned the sessions are outstanding. The majority of the students improved 2-3 years in their reading, 1-2 years in their Maths and 1-2 years in their Spelling. The 10 hours per student is equivalent to 1 ½ days at school! All the students gained confidence in themselves and have hit the ground running at the start of term. If there was ever a time to help your child reach their potential before May 2021 that time has to be now. It may be that your child is actually not behind their peers but how do you know? The answer is a free assessment with Jo at Kip and you will know exactly where they stand. The students from the summer sessions were astounded to see the evidence of their improvement. It doesn’t take years to achieve, a few sessions is often enough to push them through to a level that will stand them in the best positon either after GCSE’s or upon entry to secondary school. Good luck and hang on in there!

Acupuncture: A mental Health Aid Robin Croley from the Chesterfield Acupuncture Clinic shares thoughts on his recent pandemic experiences.
A
cupuncture addresses mental health and understands it both in terms of pathology, being stuck or having self-perpetuating negative thoughts and emotions, and potential, which is displaying appropriate responses to life events.
During lockdown, I observed an increase in people being worried and fearful.
Worry is fuelled by information, at any time we could find the internet fuelling feelings of worry, but when we consider the information we have had to process in the last six months, it’s no wonder people are struggling. The ‘what ifs’ can trigger a domino effect of infinite outcomes and for the worrier / overthinker, things can spiral out of control. When in control of these feelings, being mindful and considerate is a healthy manifestation of the situation. Fear is more immediate than worry, and concerns what might happen in the very next moment. It is drama and the body responds with adrenaline; the fight or flight response. A healthy response puts people in a state of vigilance and readiness, just in case, however, fight or flight responses should only be short lived until danger
門
Page 64
has passed. The situation becomes out of control, exhausting and is unsustainable for someone to be in this state continually, on red alert for days, weeks or even months.
Many people have existed in this state of high alert now for many months. During the spring and summer when we should have emerged from our winter hibernation and recharged our batteries, we were subject to enforced withdrawal. Without the earlier seasonal norms, the coming winter will be a challenging time for some people. S.A.D. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a recognised condition causing depression during the darker months and my concern this winter is for the unseen impact, and the effect of the previous seasons forced withdrawal on people. I predict a particularly tough season for many people’s mental health.
If you suspect you may be experiencing the feelings and emotions mentioned, please get in touch and find out how acupuncture may be able to help.

A Virtual Christmas Celebration Brookfield News
Text & Images: Brookfield Journalism Group
C
hristmas celebrations at any school are a special part of the calendar. At Brookfield, the “Community School tag means that the carol concert, dance evenings, drama productions and staff panto are as much part of the Yuletide experience as stuffing and wrapping paper. So how will we cope this year?
Unfortunately, due to restrictions and bubbles, we were unable to rehearse a school production. The performing arts and art department have decided to continue to spread the positivity and provide a creative outlet for so many talented youngsters by creating a Virtual Christmas celebration.
Throughout those months, people started to turn to creative outlets to spread positivity and these helped many people to cope; rainbows, scarecrows, balcony musicals, street songs, theatre online, zoom dance lessons and VE day street parties.
The event will be a celebration of work and will hopefully spread a little festive spirit. Now, more than ever, we need to support the creative arts and to celebrate each other.
In March we were put into a government enforced lockdown that we thought would be for a few weeks; it turned out to be 5 months. Little did we know back then that it would become such a test of human spirit.
When schools reopened in September, Brookfield realised how important those creative outlets were and performing arts lessons resumed.
We have a range of students taking part - from year 7 to 13. There will be Christmas songs, an A Level pantomime, dance and drama pieces, special effects make-up galleries, virtual art galleries, a special staff song and readings from our English department.
The show will be uploaded to our website in December for families and our local community to enjoy. We hope you will follow the link to join in with an unusual version of Christmas at Brookfield!

Garden Tips
December Garden Tips Words: Transition Chesterfeld Picture: Robert Nixon Betts
Many people put their plot to sleep for the winter. They clear out the vegetables that have finished in the autumn and leave it empty doing nothing until the spring. But it is still possible to leave some root crops in the ground, removing them when needed for the table. These include beetroot, carrots, parsnips and turnips. Have you thought of covering your plot with a membrane? e.g. black plastic, weed control fabric or anything that removes light, perhaps even old carpet. This prevents weeds growing and much goodness leeching away out of the soil.
It is a good time to deep clean and sharpen all of the tools lying in the shed. A thin film of oil appropriately used is recommended for steel tools put away for the winter too.
Outdoor sowing of broad beans is still possible if you choose a hardy variety like ‘Super Aquadulce’.
If you have a greenhouse or window sill, it can give you a tremendous start to next year if, before the end of December, you sow such things as peppers (sweet & chilli), tomatoes & onions from seed. This is the time of year to begin to plan for next year, send off for the new season’s seed and nursery catalogues. Some time can also be usefully spent looking through the hundreds of company websites and searching the internet to find interesting and new varieties. Don’t be overambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space.
Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent overwintering spots for essential wildlife.
Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room. Make leaf mould at this time. Although some leaves begin to fall in September, the time when the bulk of fallen leaves are available is at the end of November and into December. Why not make a clamp with four posts and chicken wire to a container, put all of the leaves you can collect within it. This weed-free soil conditioner is best spread on the ground later in the year. In October, the Galaxy team held a 24-hour bake sale and the big bang raffle to raise much needed funds for Ashgate Hospicecare. They went out and about selling raffle tickets and a live draw took place on Facebook where Dave gave away £150 in cash, a two-course meal for two and £50 in cash amongst other prizes. A total of £1,035 was raised for the hospice, a fantastic effort by everyone involved.
New Enterprise From Galaxy Travel Words: Simon Paterson Images: Galaxy Travel
G
alaxy Travel Wedding Cars and Taxis are the latest edition to Chatsworth Road, opening to the public on Thursday 3 December.
Owner of Galaxy Travel and local family man Dave Lewis (pictured) has been at the helm of Galaxy since opening in 2003, running it from his mum and dad’s house in Newbold. They provide a high class service for airport transfers and wedding cars and have built a loyal customer base over the years. With their new 24/7 taxi service Dave has big plans for Galaxy and the office. “Chatsworth Road is the perfect place for us to open our first taxi office, with so many local, independent businesses operating we are in some good company. I will be popping out (post lockdown) to meet some of the owners of these wonderful businesses and intend to build a community where we help and support each other. I have to say a huge thank you to my mum and dad for supporting me all these years, without them none of this would be possible,” Dave says.

Chesterfield’s Crooked Musical Spire? From local arts group, Ashgate Heritage Arts Words: Peter Gray
C
hesterfield’s iconic landmark is the title of a book by Chris Nickson and, at Ashgate Heritage Arts (AHA), they are making a “medieval murder-mystery musical” out of it.
Following the success of a short Showcase film shown at Buxton Fringe Festival, the Arts Council have awarded AHA a project grant to develop the musical further. Local musicians Martin Coslett and Peter Gray have teamed up with award-winning writer Mary Hennessy to produce the book and score. The funding means they’ll be able to pay a director, and actors, and take it to the next level. The story tells how John Carpenter comes to Chesterfield in 1360 to work on the new spire. He finds a friend in a young boy, Walter and falls head over heels for his sister Katherine. But death and intrigue strike the construction site and John is
Page 72
suspected of murder. He is faced with a life and death struggle to clear his name and bring the guilty to justice.
Now Andrew Miller has been appointed Director, and Harry Style (Ed: Please note, just the one ‘s’ in ‘Style’) as Musical Director, to rehearse the cast and film a 30-minute piece which will be broadcast online on Wednesday 9 December, please make a date in the diary Eventually AHA are hoping to put on a full stage show of The Crooked Spire at Chesterfield’s Pomegranate Theatre. To find out more, see AHA on Facebook and YouTube or contact them by email at: productionoffice@ashgateheritagearts.co.uk www.ashgateheritagearts.co.uk

Junction Arts
Keeping the community together during a pandemic
One of Chesterfields leading arts charities Junction Arts are the force behind community arts events, Bolsover Lantern Parade and Tapton Lock Festival, and next year, they celebrate their 45th year co-creating projects with rural and exindustrial communities! Hannah Bowdler, their Relationship Fundraiser, who joined the charity earlier this year, tells us more about the charity and the importance of community arts. The power of the arts Community arts have long been practised to empower individuals and communities to come together for self-expression, to spark community discussions and allow for shared cultural experiences.
The arts have a positive impact on people and the places they live. Projects such as This Girl Codes empowers young women in North East Derbyshire to build confidence and skills, address inequality and inspire change through connection to their heritage using technology. We've worked hard to develop our work online throughout the pandemic. We have adapted to stay engaged and active in our communities to give those isolated the much-needed break from daily worries through exciting creative activities that connect them to others.
November marked the 27th Bolsover Lantern Parade, a well-loved tradition in the town and one of the largest lantern parades in the UK. Years of family-friendly lantern workshops with professional artists has grown a talented community of lantern makers.
This year, not to be beaten by the Pandemic, Bolsover are still celebrating the parade tradition from their homes, by participating in a new Junction Arts project ‘Lighting The Way’. Residents, businesses, schools and care homes created Hope at Home bird lanterns that were lit in their windows on the 28th November. Connect and support those struggling Please help us raise £4,000 this December, as we run our first Christmas Giving Campaign. By donating, you will be sending a lifeline to those who are increasingly isolated and alone this Christmas, linking them to their communities. Please follow the link on our website to make a difference.
If you are looking for some escapism and a creative break, you can get involved with our projects through our website. Please share your creativity with us and get in touch online. www.junctionarts.org junctionArtsuk
Jane, Junction Arts Project Coordinator say, "Now more than ever the arts have a crucial role to play in helping people’s health and wellbeing. Taking part in the arts activities with others is an opportunity to be social, escape reality, be creative, learn new skills, make new friends and feel part of a community."

Music
Episode 3: Damon Downs Words: Aaron Brown
A very warm welcome to Episode 3 of S40time, and I imagine by the time you’re reading this, you’ll be gearing up for your Christmas and Winter Celebrations.
Episode three traces the epic journey of one of the area’s best known, and loved musicians - Damon Downs. You may have been lucky enough to have witnessed his virtuoso axe-wielding skills in local band, Towards The Sun, yet Damon has released an incredible 11 solo albums. With another album set for release early in 2021, S40time bagged another exclusive with a three song acoustic live set recorded at The Olde House, which had the S40time production team awestruck! I’m pleased to announce that you can catch up with this and every episode of S40time (for free) with the launch of our brand new shiny website: www.s40time.com You’ll be able to discover our vision for the local music scene, explore what we’re all about, and have early access to what’s coming next.
I’m currently working with David McPhie (Some Kinda Mushroom), who you may remember from the Pilot Episode (Getting Joe Cocker his record deal), who will now have his very own spin-off series called 'The Man In The Hat - In Conversation with..'. I teamed up with Cosmic Monocle, a very cool graphics and animation company, and put together some super-slick intro music and iconic pictures of Chesterfield, which will hopefully get people really excited for the interviews that David and I shot with some of the town’s best loved characters over the summer.
The first interview of the new series will be with Chesterfield band, Shape of The Rain, who played with Pink Floyd when they visited town in the 60’s, and recounted stories of recording at legendary studios like Rockfield (Oasis, Queen, Stone Roses) in Wales, and London's, Abbey Road. Look out for this episode sometime in December.
On its heels are shows with John Cuttriss, talking about his books on The Carlton Club and Aquarius on Whittington Moor, Jazz Legends, AL Needham and Denny Lawson, Jonathan Rowlands (Bakewell Festival) and folk supremo Hannah James. Page 76
He’s not doing all the work, though! I’ve shot a couple more episodes since I last wrote (again, thanks to The Olde House for allowing us to use their function room).
When he’s not instructing you how to safely throw an actual axe at The Snake Room on Whittington Moor, Nick Barker from Grassmoor has drummed for some of the World’s great metal bands including Testament, Brujeria and most famously starred in the BBC Documentary “Living with the Enemy” with death metal band - Cradle of Filth. Like most musicians, Nick’s had most of his livelihood cancelled for the foreseeable future, and speaks passionately about a fall from grace which saw him rocking crowds of 250k in South America and drum sponsorship deals, to having to sell his equipment just to get by.
Another thing we can certainly look forward to this Christmas, though, is one of the best Christmas songs of recent years, penned by local hitmaker, Danny Burton. 'Merry Christmas, One and All' is the Christmas song that The Beatles and Bowie never wrote together, (with excellent backing vocals from yours truly!) and highlights the plight of those who are without friends, family and creature comforts at this time of year. With all proceeds being donated to breast cancer and homeless charities, I urge you to get behind this really catchy and uplifting festive tune, which you’re sure to be singing all over the festive period. Please help us out by subscribing to S40time on Youtube, and joining in with the banter on all our social media platforms, and have yourselves a delightful Christmas and New Year.

Sean and Pete responded quickly to a request for a tiled roof inspection. After carrying out a thorough inside and outside survey they gave the roof a clean bill of health. Nice to come across honest people who don't 'make work for themselves' where more is required. Well done. Trusted Trader review: 07/02/2018. Professional, reliable and honest builders. Would recommend their services. They were always on time, kept the site clean and tidy. They were considerate of our family life and their work ethics could not be faulted.
