Well hello sunshine.

What a fab few days we've had, the sun has baked us, the paddling pool is nice and warm - just a shame we can't leave the house as three out of the four of us tested +ve for COVID!

Life goes on though and S40 Local can still be put together from the cosiness of my 'front bedroom' office.. I'm the one who's -ve! What a cracking edition we have this month! Ok, so I've indulged myself a little, cars, cars and cycling ... there's much more, but as it's my mag surely I can pick out a few things that get me a little excited every now and then?

A note of thanks arrived recently from Adam, the one from Adam's Happy Hens. He got in touch to thank me for the walk we put in the July edition that took people along the quiet lanes and past his farm shop. Turns out quite a few of you did the walk and called in for an ice cream or a drink and many have become regular customers. Thanks to everyone who did the walk and mentioned S40 Local, I love it when things work out. Your fiver buying ice creams from Adam who buys ice cream from Hope Valley, who make it from supplies from cows in the fields! All very local ... see page 36 for Molly Scott's view on 'local' and how important it has become over the last few years.

No walk this edition, we have got a cycle instead that takes in the canal paths out to Staveley Basin with almost no road, I'll sort another local walk for the Autumn edition... I hope the route is correct as I didn't have the chance to have a final ride through directions due to isolation, fingers crossed!

I feel there is so much good stuff in this edition, so please enjoy and I'll be back in touch in September after the summer hols.

The 'Car' Show Must Go On!

Chesterfield Rotary & Satelite Rotary catch the sun for their annual car show.

Words & Images: Paul Chapman

There's the global pandemic thing that's been going around and alongside it comes a list of rules of what we can do and/or cannot do.

If you're organising a car show do you do it or don't you? Is there any risk as it's outdoors or is it safe? If 20,000 people can attend a football match in a stadium surely a few thousand (hopefully) people can browse some cars at respectful distances and help raise some money for local charities... that need our support and haven't been able to open their charity shops for months!

These are just a few of the questions that the Chesterfield Rotary and Satellite Rotary Clubs faced as the annual show at Eckington approached.

With an event like this you need to book the location in advance, arrange caterers etc, ensure that exhibitors know so they can have their vehicles ready and let people know so they can book the date and come and appreciate the cars and bikes.

No easy task given the past year.

Page 6 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Charity

Well we took a punt and sorted a date with Renishaw Hall. It was after an announcement about dates suggesting that as it was outside we should be OK, so the sub group came together and set about putting everything in place. We set about testing mobile phone linked credit card readers so we reduce the dependency on cash which seemed to work and would help on the gate. Fab, all is going well.

The Football! England have a key match to play at 5pm on the day of the show, will anyone turn up? We considered rearranging but UEFA were not prepared to reschedule the match... so we agree to kick off (!) at 3pm, people could still come and be home for 5pm. Another disaster averted. Then a couple of days before the event we're told we need to register everyone on the COVID booking app as they enter! Previously unknown to us when booking, members of the Historic Houses Association, which includes Renishaw Hall, are required to apply the system. Nightmare, do we call it off? We updated our facebook site with the facts and people started posting responses. The majority said 'no problem' we're still coming and looking forward to it! We're back on again!

So the day came.

The sun flexed it's muscles, it had been a bit shy for a week, and at 3pm classic cars started rolling up the drive to find a friendly greeting from one of the many volunteers on the entrance. The cards readers seemed to be working and the exhibitors areas started filling up nicely.

I took a wander around the event and chatted to a few of the owners, they were all extremely pleased to be out. It had been a testing 18 months and most were just happy to have their cars and bikes out for a spin and the opportunity to spend some time chatting to like-minded folk.

Andrew and Paul from Rotary took a stroll around and picked out a rather nice Austin Healy and a 1938 Triumph Speed Twin as winning car and bike. Quite early on the attendees started to thin out destined to see how England fare.

Viewing numbers were a little down on normal years but after the takings were counted we'd raised £6,000 for local charities including Ashgate Hospicecare, The Elm Foundation and Relate, Chesterfield and North Derbyshire. I have to pass on the thanks of Chesterfield Rotary and Satellite Rotary to everyone who attended. It was great to see so many people enjoying the day and happy to put a few £'s in the bucket for charity.

Turn to page 12 for a chat with Shaun Lawless, a chap with a rather special car!

I joined the Satellite Rotary Club to give a bit back to the community by way of my time, helping out at events like this is always a pleasure and if it's something that appeals to you, just give me call on 07764 801080 or drop me an email: paul@s40local.co.uk.

Car Art

Words: Paul Chapman

The Nissan Skyline GT-R is the technical whizz of the supercar world, capable of defeating the giants of the performance car industry it’s hard to imagine that the first marque rolled off a very small production line of just 1,945 Hakosuka GT-Rs between 1969 and 1972.

Whilst walking around the Eckington Classic Motorshow something caught my eye, it looked like a mini Ford Mustang Fastback from one of my favourite films Bullitt. However, this was Japanese, a Nissan badge, it was one of that first small batch and next to it, owner Shaun Lawless from Newbold.

I struck up conversation and this man that has played a large part in the cult following of this car in the UK since his involvement in the GT-R scene since the 1990s. Shaun's love affair with cars started in his teens!

“I’ve always had a passion for Japanese cars” says Shaun. “Cars are a family thing; my brother Kevin has a Ford Escort (Ed: which was parked next to the GTR) and my other brother Eamonn helps with the logistics.”

“I’ve had a wide range of cars, Ford Escorts RSs, Ford Cosworths, but one

Page 12
Cover Artist

of my first cars was a Datsun 240z, these were sold in Japan as Nissans, and the same cars sold outside the Japanese market being badged as Datsuns.”

“In the late 90s I got my first GT-R, a Nissan Skyline R33 and this was the beginning of my route into the GT-R scene. The GT-R was not sold directly from UK dealers in the early days so all cars, were imported in very small numbers. Early owners had to be very determined to find a car, you couldn’t simply walk into a Nissan dealer and buy one.”

Hakosuka GT-R: Known at the ‘Boxy skyline’ - box in Japanese being ‘hako’ and sky is ‘suka’. The following model became nicknamed the ‘Kenmeri’ after the western looking young couple used to advertise it, Ken and Mary!

In the early days of the internet Shaun set up an owners’ forum where discussions took place about all aspects of GT-R life. With the backing of the NISMO (Nissan Motorsports International) racing division, this led to trips to Japan visiting specialist tuning shops and led to the formation of many life long relationships.

“I’ve had the pleasure to meet so many interesting people through the forum, including Kazutoshi Mizuno (Mizuno-san), known as ‘Mr GTR’ across the world, he's a good friend and the chief Nissan engineer behind the GT-R. We had forum trips across Europe to the Nürburgring and Spa circuits and it wasn’t long before I purchased a R34 GT-R. So how did you find one of the rare first-generation cars? “Obviously my interest with GT-R’s dates to the original car, the KPGC10 (Ed: that’s a Nissan Skyline 2000 GT-R 1969 to 1972, or Hakosuka GT-R) but they are so hard to find. I have a good friend who runs a garage and he set about finding a good clean car to import, it took about 18 months to source the right car, but we got our hands on it about four years ago.”

This is the white car you see in the pics on these pages, I’d not seen one prior to the show and instantly fell in love with it.

“What makes the cars even harder to find is that people don’t like them to leave Japan, so it was quite an achievement to find a good one and bring it across to the UK.

“The car has had a full restoration by a UK GT-R specialist and apart from a few minor changes is standard. We’ve had custom suspension fitted to lower the ride height, added flared arches to the front, the back always came with flares as the cars run 10.5” wide wheels at the rear and 8.5” at the front and I sourced some Watanabes magnesium racing wheels.

“These wheels caused great concern as they are 14” diameter and it’s difficult to find wide tyres to fit 14” rims, 13” no problem but not 14”. The tyres fitted came from Australia, the size issue lead to the craze for stretched tyres that so many cars feature these days.

“You need to be so respectful of these cars when working on them, you can’t just nip to your local auto parts store. The S20 twin-cam engine is one of rarest engines in the world, only ever fitted to the early GT-R and about 20 extremely 240z 432s.”

Shaun loves to show his cars but he also loves driving them, he’s driven his R34 up the legendary Stelvio pass in Italy and has done the Gumball rally twice across Europe. He loves the attention the cars get, and the way people step up to chat and find out more.

One of Shaun's cars that typifies this love is an extremely rare Nissan GT1. “Just four of these homologation cars were built for racing.

“A good friend ran a race team; the team were also part of the Playstation Acadamy that took successful gamers into actual cars and onto the track. The GT-R was the first car to run an LCD screen in the car which was developed by Sony.

“Four cars were built for the FIA GT1 world series in 2009, the series was killed off in 2011 and the cars returned to Nissan, destined to be toured around the world and demonstrated at events. I was at the Goodwood Festival of Speed where one of the cars was being run by NISMO and driven by FIA GT1 World champion Michael Krumm, and I enquired if there was any chance it was for sale, ‘No way’ was the answer.

“But a while after I was invited to the Spa circuit by NISMO as a guest, I thought it was down to my involvement in the Nissan forums, but it turns out I was being vetted to see if I was to be a suitable owner for the GT1!

Page 14 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Cover Artist
Page 15 Please Mention S40 Local Magazine

“The car is purely for show. I can’t do track days in it, it’s too loud, I can’t race it as there is no series, but I can show it at events, it’s been to Chris Evans’ Car Fest, demo’ed at the Nürburgring, classic events and even displayed in the foyer of the RAC headquarters in London which was a very tight squeeze getting it in!”

So why would you do this, own a car that is so expensive to run and has so few places you can us it? It was clear to see that Shaun has a passion for things different, “these old cars have a charm about them, they are so impractical compared to today’s cars, but they are just so lovely to own. The GT1 is a work of art, my Picasso.

“I think many people want cars with Google Connect and Apple play, the car and what it looks like is a secondary requirement. Cars bring back memories for me, each one relates to a period in my life, to people around me and to experiences.

“An old friend stays in touch via Facebook, she always mentions the car I owned at the time, the music and reflects nostalgically. This is what makes it for me, people love the old GT-R, like you, you stopped to talk. It’s great to see people appreciate it, the social side of things, I suppose that’s why I do it.”

What's your best car experience? “One of them is Silverstone in 2019. 13 members of the GTR forum got together and started the GT-R drivers club, and in 2019 we celebrated 50 years of the Skyline.

“We were humbled that Nissan bought the concept GT-R 50 over from Japan to display, these Italdesign, £1Million+ supercars, of which 50 were later individually produced to order, reflect the heraldry of the car. At Silverstone I lead out a parade of GT-Rs from the oldest and original, my car, to the GT-R 50 concept car bringing up the rear. It was a real honour to be involved and to help bring this event together.”

Huge thanks to Shaun for taking the time out to chat cars and to Richard Gibson for the fantastic images.

Skyline Pocket History

The Nissan Skyline GT-R was first manufactured in 1969 and found success on the Japanese Touring Car racing series. The first model was a 2ltr straight 6 that developed a very respectable 153 bhp, remember it was 1969, and featuring racing bucket seats, three spoke sports steering wheel and aluminium pedals giving it a sense of its racetrack heraldry. What is surprising is that just 1,945 cars were produced between 1969 and 1972… all sold in Japan.

The Skyline GT-R went through five generations, the final model being the Skyline GT-R V·Spec II Nür, before being replaced with a totally new design, the Nissan GT-R. The Nissan GT-R is still available in R35 guise today, which due to its power, four-wheel drive system and advanced electronic wizardry make it one of the world’s most sophisticated and successful supercars.

Filthy Poser

A new local business offering window tinting and bespoke car care services

Words: Paul Chapman

Car window tinting has become so popular these days for several good reasons, it looks great and offers an increased level of security. Robert Watkinson (pictured) from Filthy Poser of Somersall is new to S40 Local and his business is driven from his long standing passion for cars!

This week I met Rob for a quick Q&A to chat about his business, what makes him tick, what he offers and where he covers.

What made you choose window tinting as a business? "I have always loved cars right from a really young age and making them look awesome from the inside to the outside. Window tinting not only looks great on vehicles but it also helps protect against potential theft, as well as blocking out all the UV sun rays to help preserve interiors."

Do you offer a mobile service? "Yes we travel to people's homes and places of work as it is much easier for them. The plan is to have a unit in the near future so I can service more clients but we are always more than happy to travel if it is easier for the customer."

Are you self taught? "When I first started out, I watched a lot of YouTube videos on “how to car tint” but I knew proper training from a certified training centre was the only way forward. I invested in full training from a centre that could offer IMI accreditation (Institute of Motor Industry).

"There are too many rogue car tinters out there that are self taught and are not industry standard accredited. I can be confident offering guarantees and doing a proper installation ensuring 100% satisfaction for the customer."

What are your future plans? "I see a really bright future, not just in car tinting but car body wraps as well. Now that is a transformation on a car! I also want to continue to build my Filthy Poser car care brand too!"

What areas do you cover? "We are happy to travel to a 15 mile radius from Chesterfield in any direction but if a family needed a couple of cars tinting, we are happy to travel further."

What else do you offer – just car tinting? "No not just car tinting, I have always had a passion for making cars look awesome inside and outside and I know all the car care products out there, after years of testing on my own vehicles and friends. "I decided to set up my own brand of car care products offering; car paint protection, car shampoos, car waxes, tyre trims and interior cleaning products. The brand is really fresh and vibrant and I am told stands out in the market place! I am also getting such awesome reviews on the products which I know are second to none. I wouldn’t use any other products myself!"

If you are looking for well priced car tinting, great care products, guarantees and an IMI Accredited trusted installer, please get in touch with Rob on the number or email below... and as always, don't forget to mention where you saw him, S40 Local magazine!

Five Go Ape At Sherwood Pines

Page 24 Out & About
Words & Images: Simon Paterson

Like many people over the past 15 months Eva (aged 10) missed out on celebrating her birthday with friends and family when restrictions were still in place. So, Bekah had the brilliant idea of taking her and four friends to Go Ape. Well, I thought it was a brilliant idea until I found out I was the designated adult that would be going up in the trees with them! Good old Gavin (Darcey’s dad) volunteered to get involved, which made me feel better as he is considerably taller than I, so if the harness worked on him, I’d be fine!

Go Ape is a short 40-minute driveaway at Sherwood Pines. Sherwood Pines is awesome and I don’t use that word lightly! As well as Go Ape it has:

• 3 walking trails

• 3 cycling trails

• 2 running trails

• Disc golf

• Bushcraft activities

• Bike Park and skills loop

• Go Ape

• Forest Segway

• Nordic Walking

• Play areas

• Orienteering

• Bike hire

• Café

• Barbecue and picnic areas (BBQs currently not permitted)

Many of the above activities are free, so all there is to pay is parking which is about £7 for the whole day!

Upon arriving at Go Ape I was instantly filled with an impending sense of doom (it’s high up, really high up), but like most strong, alpha males I pretended I wasn’t scared of heights and showed no fear, hoping my wobbly legs wouldn’t give me away!

After being fitted with a harness and taken through a short tutorial and health & safety demonstration we embarked on our tree top adventure (pun intended). The first course is great and suitable for younger kids and scared adults! We saw the forest from a new, beautiful perspective whilst tackling obstacles, rope bridges and zip wires. It was rather hard to land the zip

wire in a graceful manner and Gavin demonstrated perfectly how not to land, which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Sorry Gavin!

The second run was a little higher with an increased climbing difficulty, but not too much. The kids had grown in confidence from their first run and couldn’t wait to take on the next one.

Now, the third run is not for the faint hearted, but after completing the first two we were all ready to take on the challenge. As well as the sharp increase in height, it introduced a climbing wall which you had to shimmy across and several tightropebased challenges. The girls smashed it and Gavin and I loved it, despite bodging the zip wire landing again!

At the start of the day one of our group was a little sacred, but after pushing herself to face her fears, she had conquered them. This got me thinking.

Life begins at the end of your comfort zone and the activities such as those at Go Ape are designed to push you out of it. The most dangerous zone a young person can stay in is their comfort zone. The more we encourage children to step out of it; the more resilient an adult they will become and the better equipped they will be to take on life's challenges. It’s never been easier for young people to stay in their comfort zones, in fact, it’s been actively encouraged over the past 15 months. As parents, guardians, grandparents... we must provide our young people with as many opportunities to step out of their comfort zones as possible, because, remember, that’s where life begins!

This month we're back on two wheels with a route that's mostly offroad!

Hopefully at the end you'll have done about 16 miles with just a mile or so of road and you'll be ready for an ice cream!

• Starting from Bobbin Mill Lane (1) near Morrisons head east to Walgrove Road, left turn, then right through the old Walton Works, along Goytside, across Boythorpe Road and around Queen's Park on the cycle lane through the car park.

• Across Park Road (2), past the skate park and at a cross road of paths go slight right and continue over the dual carriageways towards the Railway Station.

• Once past the station, at the T junction (3) head left on the cycle track, past the closed Chesterfield Hotel, over the bridge towards town and then immediately right along a cycle path (signposted) and then turn diagonally right across Brewery Street car park, towards the bottom corner of the car park, go over the toucan crossing, follow the cycle path down towards Chesterfield College but then stay right on the cycle path and join the cycle path along the side of the A61 dual carriageway.

• Stay on this path and emerge at CASA (4), turn right and head under the island staying straight ahead as you exit and then left across Lockoford Lane to go through a fence (5) onto the Trans Pennine Trail (signposted TPT).

• Stay on the TPT with the Chesterfield Canal on your right and cross Brimington Road (6).

• Stay on the canal towpath, it runs slightly away from the canal on the left for some sections to avoid narrow sections. On the left you can see the River Rother and Bluebank Pools.

• As you reach the Hollingwood Hub (7) before crossing Works Road you can stop at the Katey's Coffee Shop (open 9:30am to 4pm, seven days a week - tell them about S40 Local), but remember you're not half way yet!

• Cross Works Road and stay on the TPT until you see Staveley Canal Basin opening up in front of you. This is a recent development and you can find more details at Chesterfield Canal Trust (www.chesterfield-canal-trust.org. uk).

• At the basin stay left (8) around the main basin, past Staveley Town Lock and the path loops around and under Eckington Road where it then climbs slightly before reaching a T junction. Here we go right, signposted TPT Chesterfield. You could go left out to Rother Valley, but not today!

• Follow this trail parallel to the road before passing over a Toucan crossing and past the back of Staveley Fire Station (9).

• Go around a gate and continue on the trail, you're now pointing back to Chesterfield.

• After a while look out for a TPT cycle sign on the right, through an opening next to a gate (10).

• Turn left and follow one of the few bits of tarmac along Bamford Road, a longish climb until you spot a left turn down a trail between a fence, just past Blue Bell Close on your right and along the back of a row of houses (11), don't go past the open field, if you do you've missed the turn.

• At the end of this short section go slight right and head down through the West Wood, stay on the main trail, over a bridge (12) and climb steadily until you reach Westwood Lane.

• Turn right at Brooke Drive, follow it round until you reach a T junction at Manor Road. Turn right (13) and them almost immediately left down Recreation Road, at the end turn left down Grove Way (signposted TPT), do not go straight ahead.

• Turn right at the end and follow the track (Grove Road) downhill where the surface becomes gravel (signposted dead end).

• Continue on Grove Road and after a right hand bend you'll see a gate on the left (14) (TPT sign) that takes you down a narrow path and to another gate. Take care and ride slowly down this path, it's narrow and steep and there isn't much room for walkers and bikes despite it being a shared path.

• At a gate turn right and follow the tarmac road, with a pond on your right, to a T junction turning left (15) along Balmoak Lane.

• As the track opens up stay left along Pettyclose Lane and then left again (16).

• Continue climbing Pettyclose Lane and as it goes left at a corner, we go right (17) on the TPT that takes you straight across Tapton Golf Course! Look out for low flying golf balls.

• Head straight downhill through a coppice and stay left (TPT sign), round a few small bends and past the driving range. Cross the car cark, head to the top of the next car park and the Spire is in front of you. Head down from Tapton House and out onto Crow Lane where you go right, continue under the bridge (18) and reappear back at the Railway Station where you turn left to retrace your steps back to Bobbin Mill Lane.

Climate: Doing our bit

On a recent zoom call with Destination Chesterfield and Chesterfield Champions we discussed the subject of sustainability.

I feel I want to do my bit, but simply don't know where to start. Every time I try and move forward with something I read a counterargument saying it's not what we are led to believe. I end up stuck, going round in circles but never making any real change.

I accept that major change is needed from countries and the worldwide corporations but I personally want to start to make a change that will help. Surely we'd make more impact if everyone did somethings imperfectly than one person doing everying perfectly!

One presenter on the call Nigel Timperley, runs a company called 'Don't Do A Dodo'. They help householders buy green products for their homes with great discounts and have launched their first ever Local Carbon Club in Chesterfield.

I spoke to Nigel after the event and asked him how we, as home owners, can do our bit for the environment. His three steps are:

1. Change to LED lightbulbs

2. Get a smart meter

3. Switch energy suplier

The opposite page provides the detail.

Page 32 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Environment

Here at Don’t Do A Dodo, we’ve been wondering about how to help everyday folks take action on their carbon emissions. That’s because, all of us, sooner or later, will have to make changes to the way we live.

My name’s Nigel Timperley and I run a company called Don’t Do A Dodo Ltd. When I say things like “we will all have to make changes to the way we live” to new people I meet, I often get blank looks by way of reply. The unstated question seems to be, okay, but how can we take personal responsibility for our carbon emissions? Where on earth should we start?

Well, the first thing to say is, there is no need to panic: we don’t all have to go and live in caves! Because there’s a lot we can all do that just isn’t that difficult, and, in many cases, it’ll save quite a bit off your energy bill too.

To prove it, I’m going to give you three simple things you can do right now that will make a big dent in your domestic carbon emissions whilst saving you some serious cash.

Let’s begin with the humble light bulb. According to the Energy Savings Trust, lighting makes up 15% of the average UK household’s total electricity consumption, so making the switch to ultra-low energy LEDs can make a big difference. Plus, doing so saves quite a bit of money off your utility bills.

Even better, as LED lights last a lot longer than the old, incandescent type, once you’ve made the change, you won’t have to face that boring Sunday afternoon chore of having to go to your local DIY store for replacement bulbs quite so often.

Seriously, what is not to like?

But LEDs aren’t the only way of saving money and carbon at the same time whilst making life easier for yourself. The same can be said for our second idea: switching to a smart thermostat, such as Google’s Nest or British Gas’s Hive unit. Get smart with your heating.

Smart thermostats are way better than their traditional cousins. They save energy and carbon and, once again, they can lower your energy bill. They also look ridiculously cool and give you a level of control over your ‘indoor climate’ that you would never have thought possible. For instance,

you can remotely set the heat to come on for when you’ll finally be home, even as you’re still lying on the beach on the last day of your holiday.

But the main reason why smart thermostats are so good at saving money and carbon is that traditional thermostats are obsolete.

This is hardly surprising. The bi-metallic thermostat in use in most UK homes was invented in the 19th century. And it’s not changed much since, in spite of almost every other domestic appliance having been utterly transformed in the intervening period. So: whereas a smart thermostat can ensure that the pre-heating regime, required to make your home feel nicely toasty by the time you come in, is finely calibrated to take account of both local weather conditions and the thermal efficiency of your house, a traditional thermostat can do nothing of the sort. It’s like comparing the quality of an original Laurel and Hardy movie with live footage of this year’s Olympic Games, as viewed on a modern 4K television, then asking which one offered the superior images. The answer is self-evident, and for the same reason: a century of progress has produced a far better-quality product, that is also more convenient as well as saving you cash and carbon.

Renewables.

And the third thing you can do? Please: just switch to renewable power. Selecting dual fuel deals from major suppliers like Octopus Energy and Bulb Energy makes a real difference to the carbon intensity of the nation’s energy mix. And the thing is, these are two of the best value suppliers out there, so you almost certainly won’t be losing out on price either. Octopus has even been recommended by Which? magazine for four years in a row.

So... what do you need Don’t Do A Dodo for? I hear you ask.

Well, by clubbing together right here in Chesterfield, we secure great deals on all sorts of low carbon products, via group buying. Everything from LED light bulbs to solar panels can cost a whole lot less when we invest in the tech alongside our friends and neighbours. Plus, it’s more fun to do it together, as we can swap notes and share the experience, and we know we are making a bigger difference by acting as a community.

When you can of course...

7Reasons: To Shop Local

If you’re of a certain age, you’ll appreciate how the word ‘local’ has come full circle back into fashion and desirable. When I was growing up, I had some sense that local was the last thing I wanted. I was keen to escape what seemed to be a very boring place. Local pubs seemed miserable places where conversation stopped when someone new entered. And of course, if you’ve ever watched the darkly satirical comedy, The League of Gentlemen, the “local shop for local people” was definitely to be avoided. Local, at least for me, was associated with smallmindedness and inward looking. And that was the last thing I wanted to be.

Somewhere along the line, the connotations of local changed for me. Maybe I just got older and wiser, but I feel like local had a revival. Maybe the narrative of the 1980s and 90s that bigger equalled better just eventually wore a bit thin. Perhaps we finally appreciated if globalisation equals homogenisation, then everywhere just feels bland and boring. But something changed. Local is no longer associated with stale, parochial and provincial. Today’s local is dynamic and cosmopolitan. Today’s local is also inclusive. When I talk about how much I love Derbyshire, I mean a contemporary, multicultural, vibrant Derbyshire.

Page 36 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Economy
The Cafe at Libby's Shop
Indie

Highfield House Farm Shop

I’d also like to stress it’s not about being perfect or having unreasonably high standards. We still get a weekly ‘big shop’ from a supermarket, I often grab a branded coffee on the way to work and my husband makes very good use of the internet to shop, so we definitely aren’t ‘purists’ about this. But I do try to support local when I can. And I feel good about every single purchase.

Anyway, enough waffle! Let’s get down to the reasons why you should shop local when you can.

Good for the local economy: Shopping local creates jobs, keeps people in work and keeps businesses running. Local businesses tend to hire local people. Every pound spent in the local economy tends to circulate longer within it. A great example of a company who pride themselves on this is Alfreton based, Just Jigsaws. All their machine parts are manufactured in Alfreton, prints and corrugated cartons are manufactured in Derbyshire, all the timber is sourced in the Midlands and all their boxes are manufactured in nearby Leicester. So, buying one of their highquality jigsaws doesn’t just support them but all of their local suppliers too. Another

great example is Shop Indie located on Vicar Lane. They stock a variety of locally made products by Chesterfield’s talented creatives such as Me & Thee, who featured on the front cover of S40 and S41 Local Magazines.

Environmentally friendly: Buying locally grown and made products is simply better for the environment. Let’s take fruit and vegetables. Seasonal, locally grown fruit and veg is infinitely better than anything that has travelled halfway across the world, likely packaged in single use plastic and sold in supermarkets. It’s a no brainer that it has less food miles. The same is true of dairy and meat. I love supporting our local milkman, knowing that the milk comes from nearby farms and that the glass bottles drastically reduce the waste we create. Highfield House Farm Shop located on Darley Road sells a fantastic variety of locally, grown and reared products.

Better service: A family run, local business instinctively just takes more pride in what they’re doing. Many of the local businesses I know pride themselves on getting to know their customers and that results in a friendlier, more personalised service. And if you’ve ever been caught in the vicious circle of computerised ‘customer service’ systems where you just go round and round pressing 1 for this and 2 for that, you’ll appreciate that sometimes it’s better to just to talk to an actual human being who knows what’s what!

Responsive and customer focused: My favourite local businesses have one thing in common, they’re responsive and customer focused. We’ve all heard the old adage about putting customers first, but how often do the big chains actually do this? I love how innovative many small businesses have been. I’m sure they’re all sick to the back teeth of having to ‘pivot’ this crazy year. But that’s what successful operations do. They flex and change to supply demand. Want to click and collect? Or get local delivery? If customers want to order via WhatsApp or an Instagram message and they can accommodate that, great! Everyone’s happy. Keep an eye out for Unhampered, a progressive new project, that facilities the ability to shop local from the comfort of your own home.

Page 37 Please Mention S40 Local Magazine

Better quality: When I think of the local shops I know and love, what they all have in common is the exceptionally good quality of the products they sell. Whether that’s the Highfield House Farm Shop with their fresh veg, Shop Indie with their locally made gifts or Libby’s Cafe on Chatsworth Road with their amazing sweet treats, you get what you pay for and I think it's worth paying for!

Keeps our high streets interesting and vibrant: In my mind there is nothing more depressing than the homogenisation of British high streets. Who wants the same bland serving everywhere they go? I certainly don’t. I want to soak in the local character, and enjoy whatever’s great about that place, and then enjoy the difference when I go somewhere new. Chesterfield’s Chatsworth Road,

Derby’s Saddler Gate and Dale Road in Matlock are just three excellent places for independent shops. Remember, use it or lose it!

Strengthens communities: Shopping locally helps forge strong, united communities. We’ve seen this first hand during the hardships of the last year. When the supermarkets struggled to cope with panic buying, local businesses rose to the challenge. Increasingly, communities might operate digitally, but those fundamental aspects of human interaction remain unchanged. People helping other people.

Revitalising Chesterfield Market

Words: Edited from a Press Release Chesterfield Borough Council

The Market Place in Chesterfield has been centre stage for over 800 years. As with anything, times change and we all need to adapt - the market is no exception. Chesterfield Borough Council has announced ambitious plans to revitalise Chesterfield Market – creating a vibrant open-air shopping experience with new event space, seating, and landscaping. Drawn up following a first round of consultation with local market traders, town centre businesses and residents, the draft Revitalising the Heart of Chesterfield Vision Master Plan will have been to the council’s Cabinet just before we print. If approved, the draft will be subject to further public consultation before specific delivery dates are finalised for completion of the works in 2022.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, Chesterfield Borough Council’s cabinet member for town centre and visitor economy, said: “Chesterfield Borough Council recognise the need to invest now to make sure Chesterfield town centre remains modern, vibrant, and relevant.

“As the heart and soul of our town centre, we must do all we can to make sure that Chesterfield Market continues to prosper in the modern world, as a destination of choice for traders, residents, and visitors."

Key proposals include:

• Re-siting market stalls currently located in New Square and on Low Pavement into a single market ground of 100 stalls in Market Square.

• Re-modelling New Square as a flexible events space – able to hold large-scale events, and accommodate temporary installations and active edges linked to local bars and restaurants

• Upgrades to the paving to improve the quality while also making it more accessible for people dependent on wheelchairs, pushchairs, or mobility aids

• New seating areas and attractive landscaping to create spaces where people want to sit and chat.

• Planting more trees.

• Brighter, more vibrant stall coverings and flexible stalls supplied with water, better lighting and digital connectivity.

• Greater prominence to the Market Hall and the town pump.

However, these are just plans and if approved a consultation will follow between 2 August and 12 September.

You are encourage to take a look and have your say on the future of Chesterfield town centre and in particular, the key proposals for the market.

The council has secured £1.15m funding through the Derbyshire Business Rates Pilot and D2N2 Local Enterprise Partnership. Further funding for later phases is being sought from the Government’s Levelling Up Fund.

The second phase of consultation will be carried out via a virtual exhibition.

Exhibition documents will also be available to view at Chesterfield Market Hall and paper copies of the questionnaire from the council’s Customer Services Centre, just off New Square.

Writing for Wellbeing

Words: Paul Chapman

Images: Leonie Martin

Leonie Martin is a freelance writer, author and poet based in Chesterfield. Recently she has been hosting community writing sessions aimed at improving people’s wellbeing through imaginative writing. I booked a zoom with her and made myself a fresh coffee to find out more about her and her work.

Leonie came to her career in writing after a life spent working in finance. She was the bursar at St Mary’s Catholic High School in Chesterfield, but 20 years ago was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis (MS), a lifelong condition that affects the brain and nerves. It was time for a lifestyle change.

“I’d always enjoyed reading and putting my thoughts down on paper but had always thought it was something I’d spend more time doing when I retired; the MS diagnosis led me down a new route.”

“I now write freelance features, poetry, facilitate Writing for Wellbeing and Reading for Wellbeing workshops, and have several publications in print and online platforms.”

“The first time I saw my writing in print was fantastic! In 2009 I travelled to London with members of my old writing group (Wingerworth Wordsmiths) to collect a joint award for our prizewinning anthology, Perspectives.”

“I’ve written as a contributor to magazines across the county, including Derbyshire Life and Reflections magazine – my first article in 2009 featured a project St Mary’s undertook to raise funds to build a school in Burkina Faso, Africa. Since then, I have covered countless Derbyshire stories and met some amazing people – including the actor Brian Blessed and record breaking local yachtswoman, Dame Ellen MacArthur.”

“My first commissioned book in 2011 was written after volunteering with the MS Trust and MS Society – it was an Essential Guide to living with MS, written not just for the patient but also for friends and family, so those living around someone with MS are aware of the illness and ways to cope.”

“In the immediate future, as part of my MA Creative Writing at the University of Sheffield, I’ll be researching and writing a supernatural/

mystical novel based on the reimagined life of a medieval Dutch girl who is thought to be the first documented case of MS.” In 2017 Leonie worked with Arts Derbyshire on their ‘Writing Ambitions’ project. Through this she delivered several Writing for Wellbeing workshops in various community settings across Chesterfield. “I found this work hugely humbling – everyone has a story to tell and deserves to be heard and valued – especially those living on the margins of society. I facilitated workshops at Staveley and Chesterfield libraries on Saturday mornings, as well as Potters Place, Hope Springs Recovery Centre and Women’s Aid.”

More recently we’ve all been dealing with the pandemic in our own way and for Leonie it was time to review how the workshops took place and move to the virtual world.

“I’ve been using Eventbrite to set up meetings and facilitating workshops on Zoom, with local people plus attendees around the world joining. It’s been such a rewarding experience.”

“I recently worked alongside Chesterfield writer Lynn Ludditt on: Relax.Reflect.Write! as part of Writing East Midlands’ ‘Elder Tree’ project – a three-year, region wide programme, empowering groups of older people across the East Midlands to create new work stimulated by museums, archives, heritage spaces and professional writers. These programs ran partly online and partly by email. Writing from our project was collated into an eBook and includes an inspiring variety of Derbyshire memories and life in the area. “It was so rewarding to see people’s confidence grow over the course of the project,” explains Leonie.

“I’ve also been holding workshops for a similar project with Chesterfield Museum to capture

Page 44 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Wellbeing

peoples’ lockdown experiences. For one of the writing activities I used a picture of an old apothecary’s cabinet, asking people to reflect and write about something that helped them in lockdown which might be represented by some of the little drawers.”

Many of Leonie’s participants are people who might not normally attend a creative writing group. “It’s not about competing with each other, but about giving people the confidence and motivation to get started on a piece of writing and share their work. My resources include interesting pictures as writing prompts, and each workshop is themed differently trying to encourage people to use the five senses in their writing – considering more than what we just see or hear, but what we smell, taste, and feel. The process is different to how people may have been taught about creative writing from an early age. I’m not looking for a polished piece of work so much as imaginative engagement with the writing activities. There are no academic rights and wrongs.”

“Each 2-hour workshop includes a short comfort break. My role as facilitator is to ensure participants feel relaxed and safe as this creates a flow where thoughts are focused, and people can release thoughts onto paper. Beyond my sessions, I can signpost participants to the next step if they want to continue their writing journey.”

Leonie loves to work with existing community groups, employers, social groups, even team building events and is keen to point out that

there is often grant funding available to help with wellbeing focussed projects should you want to set up a taster workshop or a bespoke series of workshops.

Earlier this year she held workshops for the Peak District National Park rangers who hadn’t seen or worked with their colleagues for months. “It wasn’t the usual team building event –my writing workshops help people to remove the social masks we all wear,” explains Leonie. “People open up and you often find that those who are usually quieter and more retiring, taking centre stage.”

“Our modern life moves at such a pace that we’re under pressure to look like we’re ‘having a great time’ – culturally we’re often not allowed any time to escape, to be quiet and reflect using our imaginations, to practise gratitude and creativity.” Keep up to date with Leonie’s work at the contacts below and if you’d like her to facilitate a workshop do get in touch.

Saffron Kitchen: The Asian Association

Images: The Asian Association

I’d like to start this article with an apology! Here is what I expected to find when I visited the Asian Association of Chesterfield: A small group of elderly, Asian ladies running groups for Chesterfield’s Asian community. Here is what it is: The Asian Association is a multicultural, fully inclusive community of socially conscious leaders from all walks of life that champion and support those in need. So, for my unconscious stereotyping, you have my sincerest apologies. Now, let’s showcase and celebrate all the wonderful things the Asian Association does for the people and communities of Chesterfield. Established in 1982 with the aim of promoting the culture, education, health and welfare of Asian people residing in Chesterfield and North Derbyshire, the Asian Association have been

breaking down barriers, challenging stereotypes and facilitating social integration for almost 40 years!

The Asian Association's doors are open to everyone and they are always looking for volunteers to help them with their social action projects. I was very pleased to see one of my old school friends Laura volunteering in the kitchen and it was great to hear that local painter and decorator Matt Bradbury had volunteered his time and skills to give the place a complete makeover. From the moment I entered I was made to feel very welcome by Shar and the team and was pleased to learn that they offer an Asian cookery course that Bekah will definitely be attending when it is running again; I also fancy a bit of yoga as well, it does wonder for the back you know!

Page 50 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Community

Based in Hasland and open on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 9:15am to 5:15pm The Asian Association host a variety of fantastic groups, workshops and community projects including:

• Domestic abuse support

• Race & religion hate crime awareness

• Language classes

• Film club

• Bhangra dance classes

• Yoga classes

• Asian cooking classes

• Drop in sessions

• Walks

• Health & wellbeing workshops

• Luncheon club

During the pandemic they have been running a social action project that has helped 100’s of vulnerable and isolated people across Chesterfield amidst one of the most challenging times in recent history.

Saffron Kitchen was launched in the summer of 2020 as a community meal service, delivering fresh, hot meals directly to the door. During the pandemic this service has been a lifeline for many residents in our community. A variety of both eastern and western dishes are cooked on site in their purpose-built kitchen and I was lucky enough to sample the goods! Perks of the job.

For those who can afford it a modest price is charged, but for those who are struggling financially Saffrons Kitchen offer a free meal service as part of the ‘Feeding Derbyshire’ project run by Rural Action Derbyshire. This service has proved invaluable over the past year.

Saffron Kitchen is going from strength to strength and now offer a full catering service for dinner parties and small events. The profits are fed back in to The Asian Association and used to further fund social action projects in our communities. I look forward to having some friends over soon and treating them to the delights that Saffrons Kitchen deliver to my front door. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to The Asian Association and cannot recommend Saffron Kitchen and all they do enough.

If you wish to order a tasty meal and/or get involved with them please get in touch.

Hope Valley Explorer Returns

The Hope Valley Explorer summer bus service will return to the Peak District from Saturday 24 July.

Following a successful pilot season in 2019, the service was paused during the Covid-19 restrictions of 2020 but will now operate from 24 July to 30 October this year.

The Peak District National Park has partnered with regional operators Stagecoach to offer the service across weekends and bank holidays throughout the summer, with onward links via bus and train to Sheffield, Manchester and Chesterfield.

In line with government guidance, Stagecoach and the National Park Authority are encouraging people to continue wearing face coverings when using the service.

Space for two bikes will also be available on the service - via racks - on a first-come, first-served basis.

Ticket prices have been frozen at 2019 ratesstarting at £4 for a single journey and including £6 return and a £12 family ticket. Some additional Stagecoach passes also apply.

The route will include key stops at Castleton, Hope and Fairholmes visitor centre in the Derwent Valley. Iconic locations like Winnats Pass, Mam Tor and the Great Ridge will all be available to enjoy from the route.

The initial three-year, seasonal pilot scheme (now extended to 2022) – funded by the National Park Authority - will assess the viability of running similar services long-term, to help ease pressure from private vehicles in the National Park and support linked sustainable transport by the use of rail services.

Andrew McCloy, chair of the Peak District National Park Authority, said: “We’re delighted to be bringing back the Hope Valley Explorer.

“With onward bus links and the chance to join via train from Sheffield and Manchester along the route, the Explorer is a great car-free choice to discover a wonderful corner of the Peak District this year.

“Our continuing aim is to support a reduction in private car journeys in these areas and help promote more sustainable ways of getting to, and enjoying, the UK’s first ever National Park.”

COVID Procedures Continue At Ashgate

Hospicecare

Ashgate Hospicecare asks for the community’s understanding as it keeps visitor restrictions and infection control measures in place to keep patients safe.

Following the most recent COVID guideline changes, Ashgate Hospicecare have said they will be retaining their infection control measures, which have worked so well up to now, preventing the spread of the virus and helping keep patients, families, staff and volunteers and the wider community safe.

This means the charity, will continue with two named visitors per patient, temperature checks on arrival to their Inpatient Unit and their staff and volunteers wearing face masks in all their hospice settings, including their 14 shops and three coffee shops. Shoppers will also be encouraged to wear a mask when shopping with Ashgate to help protect the wider community.

Barbara-Anne Walker, Chief Executive at Ashgate Hospicecare, said: “COVID is far from over and that is why we will continue to operate with strict COVID measures in place to minimise the risk of spreading the virus."

Vaccine uptake amongst staff and volunteers at Ashgate Hospicecare has been overwhelmingly positive allowing services to remain safely open and for patients to continue to be cared for.

Barbara-Anne, concludes: “It would be irresponsible for a hospice like Ashgate to start easing off on the vigilance which has protected us so well until now, especially as Covid numbers are once more, on the increase.”

Chesterfield Talent

More than 200 local people have put their talents on display as part of the virtual variety show Chesterfield 2Gether.

The council announced the virtual Variety Show in March and received lots of unique entries which have been put together into a two-part show that can be viewed on the council’s YouTube channel. The virtual variety show features singers, musicians, dancers, comedians, magicians and artists.

Councillor Kate Sarvent, cabinet member for town centre and visitor economy, said: “The response to our talent search was fantastic and I want to thank everyone who submitted videos for our variety show.

TAGTAP (Join The Hunt)

TagTap is a new family-friendly game that aims to get people exploring Chesterfield – on foot or by pushbike – backed as part of a Chesterfield Borough Council project.

TagTap JTH (Join The Hunt) is a free explorationbased game created by local family man Peter Hunt after he and his family enjoyed playing the popular Beat The Street game. Inspired by its ability to encourage people to get out and about, the council has joined forces with Peter to back the smartphone-based game as part of its Year of Outdoors project.

Peter Hunt, the creator of TagTap JTH explained: “I initially thought of TagTap JTH during lockdown as a fun way for my kids to get active but also with the element of a clue or question to find the next location as a sneaky way to incorporate a bit of education. After setting up a small game in the New and Old Whittington areas and inviting others to have a go it really took on a life of its own. We have only had extremely positive feedback and everyone that plays it absolutely loves it.

“We have extended the game to cover the whole of the chesterfield borough area with well over 350 tags, we hope this will give everyone young and old a chance to have a go at the game and to get active. Our main objective is to get people out and active in a fun way, so lets do it together, get competing and winning some prizes. Best of all it’s free.”

The game has starting locations around the borough which you can find listed in the app. Simply head to one of these TagTaps then, with the app open on your phone, tap the point and you’ll

“It’s a really diverse show with a wide variety of performers but the one thing that really stands out is how talented everyone is. I hope lots of people will watch the variety show and celebrate our talented residents.”

The virtual variety show is in two parts, which are each around one hour long.

be given clues to find the next location, solve the clues and hunt out the next point. There is a leaderboard of players and participants will need to find as many points as possible to be named the TagTap Champion.

The game will run all year but the championship will be time limited meaning hunters will need to be quick to work their way up the leaderboard. There will also be a competition amongst schools later in the year.

Find out more about TagTap JTH, download the apps for free and start playing:

Garden Tips

Garden Tips

Summer Gardening Tips

Words: Transition Chesterfield

Images: Robert Nixon Betts

• Second Early potato varieties will be ready to harvest now, depending upon when they were planted. They usually take about 16 weeks to produce a good crop. They can be lifted as you want them, but if you notice slug holes in the crop it is better to lift them all before the damage worsens. Store only the undamaged tubers and use the others quickly.

• Summer pruning of apple and pear trees can be done now. This helps them to keep their form and remain healthy without having congested growth.

• Most hedges can be pruned or trimmed into shape now, bird nesting should be over and this will give time for limited new growth before it slows down in autumn.

• Keep sowing quick-maturing salad crops –rocket, radishes, mixed leaves and some lettuces are all candidates – they’ll go on growing until the first frosts. Several lettuce varieties including Winter Density, Great Lakes and Lambs lettuce (corn salad) will last through the winter.

• If you’ve got empty patches of soil, consider sowing a green manure; this will cover the ground and put much needed nutrients back into the soil. This will stop weeds becoming established and is best dug in before it sets seed.

• Several herbs can be sown at this time of year in a greenhouse or cold frame e.g. chervil, dill, parsley and coriander can be protected from frost this way and will crop during the late season and winter.

• Pot up any strawberry runners that have rooted or encourage them to do so by pinning them firmly to the ground and make sure they are watered in a dry spell.

• Apart from gently pottering around the garden, this should be the time of year you can spend most time simply enjoying it; however, it's the time most plants, including weeds, also enjoy, so try to stop them setting seed – there's an old saying, 'one year’s seeding is seven years’ weeding'...

• Keep feeding birds to attract them to the garden, where they will also hunt out damaging insects and larvae. A shallow pool is a great wildlife draw, with the possible added bonus of seeing blackbirds washing themselves in a comically Victorian fashion, constantly checking to make sure they're not being overlooked, and covered head-to-toe in black.

Born in The UK

We catch up with front man Tom from local band, Alpaca Factory

Words: Paul Chapman

Images: Alpaca Factory

In our June 2019 edition we featured Alpaca Factory, a local band formed in 2018 consisting of friends from Brookfield and St Mary’s. A few years on and we catch up with Tom Gannon, vocals and guitar with the band, to learn about their latest single ‘Face of God’ and how they have been coping without playing live!

Alpaca Factory are Rebecca ‘Churchy’ Church (drums), James Vardy (guitar), Tom ‘Gan’ Gannon (guitar & vocals) and Jono Vardy (bass guitar), apart from Tom they were all at Brookfield School where the band formed, Tom joined through friends and they picked up a young and loyal following.

They are still quite a young band but quickly found popularity playing live within a couple of months of coming together. Initial gigs were support slots for bands playing at Café Totem (Sheffield), Sidney & Matlida and The Foundry, their most recent gig was at The Leadmill supporting fellow Chesterfieldians ‘Rosadocs’, this was back in March 2020, a few weeks before lockdown.

“The music scene in Chesterfield is thriving” explains Tom, “but we have very few venues. It would be great to have a music venue with a capacity for a few hundred to help new bands get off the ground.

Alpaca Factory are Tom ‘Gan’ Gannon, James Vardy, Jono Vardy and Rebecca ‘Churchy’ Church.
Page 64 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk Music

“Life has been hard for the band over the last 12 months, not least due to COVID, but also as we develop into our careers, we are finding ourselves spread around the country. Jono, our bassist will be working in London, Churchy will be studying in Loughborough and myself and James will be based in Leeds, I deferred for a year due to COVID.”

The band have continued to demo and record. The present single was written by Tom and it was only due to lockdown restrictions easing at the right time that they were able to get together and complete the track with the final mixing taking place at Foxden Production in Sheffield. “James and I have been writing on our own over the past year,” says Tom. “James favours a more electronic sound and I’m perhaps a bit more ‘poppy’. I think this is reflected in the sound of “Face of God’, a bit distanced from our usual guitar band sound.”

Tom mentioned the lyrics but was keen that we as listeners make of it what we will, it’s to be listened to and digested personally. He also discussed how song writing changes as you grow, “writing a proper love song at school is a bit of a risk,” he jokes, “it was more about teenage angst and rebellion when we started, now we get the chance to put our feelings into our music, having a much greater level of confidence in ourselves in our post school style.”

The band had planned to release ‘Face of God’ at the Y Not festival but have had to change plans as the festival will not be going ahead this year. “We’ve had some great support from Dean Jackson who’s program, BBC Introducing, features new music from local bands from Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Nottinghamshire played on local BBC radio and we can only hope it gets picked up by the national playlist from this platform,” says Tom.

It’s difficult to tell what the next step will be for the young band, with many venues still closed and the band members moving around the country, Tom is excited for the future and is sure they will stay together in one format or another.

To hear the new single check out their SoundCloud account below and as always Tom was keen to pass on thanks to all their fans, friends and family for being so supportive over the years. If you are interested in contacting Alpaca Factory for bookings and enquiries their socials are below.

linktr.ee/alpacafactory

I asked what challenges face musicians? “As our attention span gets shorter and shorter it becomes harder to grab attention. It takes months to create a three-minute track that must compete with the 60,000 tracks that are uploaded to Spotify each day… that’s one per second!

“The Spotify streaming model as a way to support a band financially is useless, the only way to make money is through playing live gigs and the accompanying merchandise which has been decimated by COVID.”

My last question to Tom, if you could only listen to one track on repeat all day, what would it be? “A Bruce Springsteen track of some sort, there are some strong Springsteen influnences to what I do, as we started out we were very British, but I think we’re taking on a more Americanised sound as we grow.”

Saltergate Children's Home

Words: Kevin Morley

Chesterfield's Jo Heath, who readers met in a previous edition of S40 Local in an article about Milestone Financial Planning, will be running the London Marathon in October this year to help raise funds for Saltergate Children's Home.

Kevin Morley and his Ethiopian wife Rebka met whilst Kevin was working in Eritrea as a voluntary services overseas (VSO) teacher.

After seeing first hand the plight of poverty stricken children and families in Ethiopia they set up Saltergate Children's Home in 2015, a safeplace for orphans who would otherwise be fending for themselves on the streets of Addis Ababa.

With war raging, crop failure and COVID-19 spreading Ethiopia has more challenges than usual. Despite this or because of this? Saltergate Children’s Home has grown both in terms of the number of children cared for (64) and the support we receive from our kind and loyal donors. Not only children, but young adults have had support through secondary school, to university and employment.

"Official statistics state there have been just over 250,000 cases of COVID-19 in Ethiopia with 4,000 deaths, relatively low when compared with the UK, however there are clearly questions about the reliability of the data with few figures collected outside the capital where there is little access to healthcare. The phrase ‘everyone on the street is coughing’ has been used many times over the past year when calling Tsege, Mahraig and Dibabe who oversee the operation in Ethiopia," says Kevin.

"The political situation in Ethiopia remains unstable following years of disagreement between the leaders of the Tigray region of Ethiopia (TPLF) and the federal government which has resulted in military conflict."

"Since founding in 2015 we have provided food, clothing, accommodation, healthcare and access to education for a growing number of children. Further, we have supported children’s guardians – usually widowed mothers – to self-sufficiency. We are now seeking to extend our remit and focus on a critical consideration that needs to be addressed before any of these steps to independence can take place – that of a child’s safety, in particular in a warzone. If you would like to hear more about our work in Ethiopia, please get in touch."

Plastic Free Festival

New festival aims to build on town's recent plastic-free accolade

Sunday 8 August

10am to 5pm New Square, Chesterfield Marketplace

Words: Greg Hewitt (Plastic Free Chesterfield)

Campaign group, Plastic Free Chesterfield, are building on their recent Plastic Free Community award by organising a Plastic Free Festival, taking place on Sunday 8 August, 10am-5pm on New Square at Chesterfield market.

Organisers say the Plastic Free Festival aims to be the one-stop place to help people reduce their single-use plastics. At the event, festival-goers can enjoy a plastic-free marketplace with stallholders selling products that encourage a plastic-free lifestyle, with businesses such as the awardwinning Steph's Sustainable Stuff, Elsie Moss Botanical, Astra Designs UK and Smarties Fruit & Veg.

Alongside the stalls will be craft recycling and upcycling workshops provided by local crafters. And to provide a festival-feel, there'll be live music and dance performances along with food and drink courtesy of local Plastic Free Champion business, El Cafe Verde.

Special guest performances on the day include Nick Toczec, Yorkshire poet and entertainer, as well as the Chesterfield Garland Dancers. Local budding poets are being asked to take part in a Plastic Free Poetry competition, with winners performing at the festival itself. So the event can live up to its name, attendees will be encouraged to bring their own reusable bags, cups, coffee mugs and containers. Two Crooked Spire branded festival cups (a reusable coffee cup and a half pint cup), sponsored by local Chesterfield businesses, will be available either to loan or buy at the event.

The festival is sponsored by Chesterfield Borough Council, with over £700 of funding for the event coming from the council's Community Infrastructure Levy grant scheme.

Greg Hewitt, Plastic Free Chesterfield Community lead said: "The Plastic Free Festival will be a really great opportunity to show off the fantastic work that the Chesterfield community have achieved so

far to reduce their single-use plastics, celebrating our recent Plastic Free Community accreditation. The festival is the first of its kind in the area and aims to help people discover some fantastic local independent businesses, of which all are reducing their plastic footprint."

"We are delighted that not only has Chesterfield Borough Council given us some funding to be able to run the event, they've also given us permission to hold the festival on New Square on Chesterfield market. It will be a great family fun day out."

Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Deputy Leader of Chesterfield Borough Council, said: "We're proud to be funding the Plastic Free Festival, by working together with the community we can make real changes that will help improve the local environment and help us all reduce our carbon footprint."

“The festival is a fantastic opportunity for everyone to understand how they can lead a plastic-free lifestyle. But it is also an important celebration of the businesses and organisations that have helped our town become an accredited Plastic Free Community.”

PROMOTION Chesterfield FC Women

Words: Sadie Henson (Chesterfield FC Women)

Following the curtailment of the league campaign, there was a positive ending to the season for the Spireites women’s team as they were promoted to the East Midlands Premier Division.

After an application process where the clubs on and off pitch performance was taken into consideration, the side were rewarded with a place in the fifth tier ahead of the new season. The league will consist of some good ties with Notts County, Northampton Town and Mansfield Town all in the same division next year.

Commenting on the promotion, first team manager, Michael Noon said “We’re all absolutely delighted with the news, all of the players, staff and board members work so hard week in week out and to be recognised for that means so much.

"We started out on this journey three years ago when the club was in the 7th tier of women’s football, we achieved promotion in the first season and have had the past two seasons cancelled due to Covid so to say that we’ll be starting next season in the 5th tier is brilliant for everyone involved in the club.“

Chesterfield FC Women play their home games at Chesterfield Rugby Club and look forward to welcoming supporters back to watch the games when they return in late August.

If you are interested in helping shape the future of the team they are presently looking for team sponsorship for the first team and Juniors, plus have great advertising opportunities.

Celebrating the life of Ernie Moss

Words & Images: Michael South

Ernie Moss was a born and bred Chesterfield gentleman who went on to become a Chesterfield FC legend. He's played for and managed many football teams during his 39 year footballing career, but he was best known for scoring 192 Spireite goals, which is still an unbeaten club record for his home town club. However, Ernie's natural born skill of the game came at a price, as in 2014 he was diagnosed with a rare form of frontotemporal dementia which his family believe came from years of heading the heavy old school leather footballs. Since his diagnosis there have been many charity football games and events held to help raise awareness and funds to find a cure to this horrible disease.

As a photographer (but more so as a CFC fan), I first became involved with the Moss family back in 2016 photographing his “Once Upon a Smile” charity football game at our ground and to be honest, it has been an honour and an absolute pleasure to have photographed him.

So, who was Ernie Moss?

First and foremost he was a proud family man. In addition to that he was a phenomenal footballer with skill and integrity. But If you are from Chesterfield, then you will already have known that. If you haven't though, then let me introduce you to him.

Ernie (or Ernest Moss, to give him his full name) was born on 19th October 1949 in Hollingwood, Chesterfield. From an early age Ernie showed a raw talent with a ball, so much so at age 17 he was signed by Chesterfield Football Club from his local tube works team. Ernie's position was always up front as a striker where he started the first of his seventeen CFC games that season against Bradford in October 1968. In his debut year Ernie helped the Spireites go on to win the Northern League Cup, so he clearly made an immediate impact to his home town team. This was the first of three spells at Chesterfield over his long career spanning three decades. His first chapter at the club was the longest, lasting 7 years from 1968 until 1975. Ernie played 271 games and scored an impressive 95 goals, many with his head. But we will come back to this later.

During his time at Saltergate, Chesterfield's home ground, Ernie married his wife Jenny in 1971. They went on to have two daughters Nikki and Sarah. After a few season's away from Chesterfield playing for Peterborough Town and Mansfield Town Ernie returned to Saltergate in 1979. Ernie's goals helped Chesterfield secure the 1981 AngloScottish Cup and nearly got Chesterfield promoted too that season. Sadly though, due to a pay dispute Ernie rejected an offer of a new contract and decided to leave the club and play his football for Port Vale in the June of 1981.

Fast forward five years (after playing for Lincoln City and Doncaster Rovers) Chesterfield's manager John Duncan brought him back to Saltergate for a third and final time. Here Chesterfield went on to win the 1984/85 Fourth Division. Ernie's goals, many of which were headers, helped the club achieve promotion but being a prolific header of the ball would unfortunately come back to haunt him and his family.

After this however, it turned out to be Ernie's final chapter for Chesterfield as, he would later be sold to Stockport County, where he played one season there before moving onto Scarborough FC. Ernie's last goals were scored while he was out on loan at Rochdale where he netted in his final two goals. After this, Ernie decided to retire from full-time football.

An interesting light-hearted fact to mention here is, of all his 240+ career goals, Ernie Moss never scored from the penalty spot. Getting back to his Chesterfield days for a moment, during his testimonial game against Sheffield United in 1986, he took his first and only penalty but unfortunately he missed.

In total, Ernie made 539 appearances for the Spireites and scored a club record 192 goals during his three separate spells at the club. Ernie's next step was into the world of football management where he had a fifteen year career (both as assistant and first team manager) with clubs such as; Boston United and Matlock Town. During his time in the dugout Ernie did win some silverware. The Northern Premier League

Page 74 www.chesterfieldlocal.co.uk
Sport
Page 75 Please Mention S40 Local Magazine

Challenge Cup and the Peter Swales Shield both won in 1997 for Gainsborough Trinity and the Derbyshire Senior Cup with Matlock Town in 2004. Ernie ended his managerial days though at Belper Town FC in 2007.

Throughout his footballing days Ernie was also a successful business man, as co-owner of the sports shop Moss and Miller. His business partner was the cricketer Geoff Miller. Together they ran two shops located in Chesterfield and Matlock. Over the years Ernie slowed down his pace in life and sadly in 2014 Ernie and his family got the dreadful news of his dementia diagnosis.

Ernie was always a regular at his beloved Chesterfield FC at their home games, even after his retirement. He would attend with his family and together with the club, they held football games in his honor for the dementia charities to raise funds.

The following years in 2015 and 2016

Chesterfield Football Club declared their home game against Ernie's former club Port Vale FC, as “Ernie Moss Days”. All funds raised were donated to his dementia charities.

Other acknowledgments for his football accolades came, including Chesterfield Borough Council naming a road next to the Chesterfield stadium after him in 2017, named “Ernie Moss Way”

Ernie attended his final home Spireite game on his 70th birthday in 2019. I met up with him and his family for a few photos prior to the game in the club bar. It was breathtaking to hear the fans all cheering for him on the 70th minute of the game! Shortly after this, due to his dementia, his family made the heartbreaking decision to move Ernie into a full time nursing home to better meet his care needs. It was here where he sadly passed away.

Its a shame that the sport Ernie loved and was so good at, has robbed him of his later years with his family. There is one thing though that cannot be taken away from him and that is his fantastic footballing legacy. Ernie is still well loved by all who have met and worked with him. The fans still talk about him and that's what will live forever, that and photographs of him scoring those amazing goals. In the reception of Chesterfield Football Club there is a mosaic of his bittersweet goal of Ernie heading the ball in the net. That will stand proud for many a year to showcase Chesterfield's highest ever goalscorer, you can be sure of that!
