Hello and welcome to the June edition of S40 Local. This month I usually dedicate some space to cycling events as June is Bike Week (11 to 19 June) see Bikeweek.org.uk for events. This year we have the third Eroica Festival over the hill in Bakewell. I caught up with Gian Bohan from Nonna's to understand what it's all about and discuss how his involvement has helped bring the festival and its 50,000 strong audience to the area. We will also see the finish of the Aviva Women's Tour in our town centre on Friday 17 June with all the entourage that will accompany it, a chance for Chesterfield to put itself on the cycling map of Britain. We're well positioned in Chesterfield for cycling options: a quiet roll along the canal, a road ride into the Peak District, throw the MTB in the car for a more adrenalin fuelled ride in the Peak or let the kids learn to jump on the local BMX and pump tracks just a short drive away. Eroica Britannia Bakewell: 17 to 19 June 2016 Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: Eroica Britannia

he third Eroica Festival from June 17 to 19 promises to attract around 50,000 fans of cycling and vintage life to the Bakewell show ground for what has become a popular fixture on the calendar. There's something for everyone, even if you don’t ride a bike. Sunday is the big day, 4,500 brave romantics will step astride pre 1987 bikes and set about tackling 30, 50 or 100 miles around the beautiful Peak District’s white tracks. I only plan to ride the 30 mile course on my Motoconfort, circa 1960, going along to enjoy the event, ride with a few friends and enjoy, what rumour says, are the best food stops this side of a Royal picnic! Excitingly for S40 Local the event has a real local connection. Gian Bohan from Nonna's is a keen cyclist who came to cycling about 15 years ago and together with three friends Marco Mori of Gusto Cycling, Tim Hubbard from 93ft Design and Nick Cotton of The Digital Group was instrumental in bringing the festival to the Peak District. “Eroica means Heroes” explains Gian, “the first event started in Italy almost 20 years ago established by Giancarlo Brocci. Giancarlo admired the heroic cycling battles of the past and wanted to highlight what people achieved on bikes far less technical than today's bikes on the white gravelled roads of Italy.” Gian explained “I went along to the event in Tuscany eight years ago to take part, I’m part Italian and was immediately hooked. I did the next two events and each year I got to know the organisers. “We started discussing Erioca Britannia, a UK event, after 12 months a plan was starting to form and things were starting to fall into place” says Gian. “We wanted to expand the event to be more than just the bikes. We’d visited the Goodwood Revival which demonstrated how the event could evolve.” “The Bakewell event has grown each year to become possibly the coolest cycle event in the Page 6 www.s40local.co.uk

country. There is nothing else like it, 4,500 riders on bikes from pre 1987, a celebration of the sufferance on the bike." Eroica Britannia events also use white gravelled roads and the disused railway lines of the Peak District are perfect for linking together to create a route with, perhaps, the feel of the original Italian events. Add in the great local food and suppliers into the mix and it creates a wonderful blend - an Italian feel but with Peak District flavours.

Tim provides Creative Direction and is in charge of Eroica Britannia creativity and strategy and is familiar with the Italian L'Eroica - its ethos, soul and style. Tim translated this established event into a new event for the UK with a very British heart, style and feel. Gian Bohan is responsible for hospitality and event delivery and is involved in the finer details of negotiations for the UK licence, as well as the master plan for the Eroica ride and the festival. Nick Cotton, Logistics and Event Delivery, is charged with making Eroica both beautiful and inspiring as well as commercial and profitable and Marco Mori the Italian connection and Route Master is instrumental in making Eroica Britannia happen. "On our journey we also teamed up with a now friend Sim Aldred from Full Circle Event Delivery Company that enabled us to deliver a world class event from Year one" adds Gian. “We had the idea, the desire and passion to deliver the first Eroica Britannia but no idea how

However, we did get through it, it took two years to get the first event together which saw around 20,000 people attend over the weekend with 1,000 riders, the oldest of which was 80 years old. He was amazed by what we had done, he was so complimentary about the event. That year we had just 300 women riders. “Year two we had between 30 and 40,000 visitors over the weekend and 3,200 riders. This year we have 4,500 riders booked of which 1,000 are women. We are holding a kids 5k ride and have 400 children booked. For the main event ride on Sunday the youngest rider is just 11 and the oldest just 83!” “It’s amazing how much effort people put into their appearance, the bikes are fantastic. We celebrate this with Best In Show for best bike, best male, best female, best junior, best dog, best cake and best tipple” outlines Gian. "The event celebrates vintage cycling and vintage Britain. A festival for all the family, we have large and small stages, large and small bands, a swing night on Saturday, a Spitfire fly past, a beach area, bedtime story area for the kids and when they’ve gone to bed DJ’s and chill out at the Main HQ tent featuring the Nonnas Pasta Bar and an mazing 10 m bar serving the odd tipple. “We have Patrick Grant from the Great British Sewing Bee, the UK’s largest bike jumble sale, acres of shopping, Vintage fairground fun, and visits from famous cycling names - Brian Robinson, the first British rider to finish the Tour de France, Chris Boardman and David Millar.” “The event really does have something for everyone, as well as the eye poppingly gorgeous old bikes there is so much to do. However the 100 mile ride is no small undertaking, this is a proper day out with riders out for seven plus hours!” The event brings a significant amount of money to the area, people visit and stay on for a few days, 20% of people came from abroad, 40% from the south and 40% live within an hour and a half’s drive of Bakewell. Coinciding with the Aviva Womens Tour which comes through the area on Friday, finishing in Chesterfield town centre, there might be one or two more bicycles in the area that weekend. Why not get yourself a ticket to the Eroica and check it out for yourself? Sounds like it should be a great day out.

Eroica The History

L’Eroica started in 1997 because of one man, Giancarlo Brocci, who admired the values of past cycling so much that he wanted to reconnect others to the heritage that inspired much Italian history, literature, culture, and music. L’Eroica also created a foundation for the protection and preservation of the last gravel roads in Tuscany. These romantic concepts led to the idea of L’Eroica, an event that initially saw 92 “hunters of feelings and emotions”, (or riders) as the creator Giancarlo Brocci defines them. They want people to rediscover the beauty of fatigue and the thrill of the conquest: the heroic cycling of Bartali and Coppi and the sacrifice that seeks out our physical boundaries where thirst, hunger, and exhaustion are felt with all their strength. Today we have carbon frames, gears the size of dinner plates and bikes so technical in design that riding up vertical walls seems possible. The bikes used in the days that inspired L’Eroica featured tiny rear gear ranges and if you were lucky enough to run two chain rings, chances are there were just five teeth different. On these steel framed, hand built bikes you knew you were pushing them along, hills hurt going up and the descents were scary. Today L’Eorica holds events in California, South Africa, Primavera and Gaiole in Chianti (Italy), Japan, Cenicero (Spain), Limburg (Netherlands) and Punte Del Este (Uruguay).

Singing for Summer

Ian Gerrard from the The Chesterfield Male Voice Choir brings us up to date on events over the last year as a member of a very busy choir.

ithout a doubt the highlight of 2015 was participating in the Festival of Brass and Voices at The Royal Albert Hall. Although it was some time ago the memories are still fresh. Taking part was exciting and emotional, bearing in mind the reason for us all being there - to raise awareness and funds for Cancer Research UK. A lovely bonus of being there was that many new friendships developed with choristers from across the UK. On the Sunday morning the bands and choirs were scheduled to appear at the Scoop More London for a medley of songs and music. For various reasons, however, this had to be cancelled. Nevertheless, determined not to be outdone, a few stalwarts of the choir still went to the Scoop and sung a couple of numbers to a small but enthusiastic and appreciative audience. This rounded the weekend off nicely. 2016 is turning into another busy year. In April the choir were guests of Derbyshire Constabulary Male Voice Choir as part of its 60th Anniversary Concert at Derby Cathedral and in May we joined Scunthorpe Male Voice Choir in their ‘Men Of Steel’ massed male voices concert where the choirs were joined by the ’Doncaster Diva’ herself - Leslie Garrett. Each year the choir is invited to sing at a few weddings, this year is no exception as we have already sung at two weddings much to the delight of the brides, grooms and guests. On Saturday 16 July we play host to Barnburgh Male Voice Choir at St John’s Church in Walton, Chesterfield for the third year running, when we

stage our Summer concert. This has become a regular feature in our calendar and one which always attracts a sell-out audience of some 200 people of varying ages. Later in the year we will then make a return visit as guests of Barnburgh MVC’s Autumn concert. Whilst this is expected to be in November, the date has yet to be fixed. St Thomas’ Church in Brampton, Chesterfield will be the venue for our own Autumn concert on 17 September. As well as including several new and exciting songs our special guests will be the Hallamshire Military Concert Band. Whilst we ended 2015 thinking that 2016 would be a little quieter, looking at our diary this is not going to be the case! In addition to the concerts mentioned, we will be presenting others locally, (some for charity fund-raising). No doubt the diary will get even more full before we end the year again with various appearances when we will be singing Christmas Carols throughout December. Although we all thoroughly enjoy our singing, we also have an excellent social life together, thanks to our Social Secretary. He arranges several social events at local pubs but the highlight is our annual Tinsel & Turkey holiday, which is usually somewhere on the south coast and is always great fun. If the idea of singing in a male voice choir appeals to you, then pop along and have a listen to us. We practice on Tuesday evenings between 7 and 9 at Whittington Moor Methodist Church, Chesterfield - you will be made most welcome, or give our General Secretary a call on 01246 559919.

I caught up with Chris Radford and Jon Leeming from Brampton Brewery who have developed two beers to help you decide how you'll vote in the European Referendum!

North Yorks malt, UK hops and a Brampton Brewery yeast strain that originated from a British brewer, every bit a 100% British beer. ‘Stronger in’ on the other hand is quite different, this is a true European beer, a blend of UK and European malts, exclusively European hops and dried, continental beer styled yeast."

If you call into The Tramway Tavern or The Rose and Crown you can try a pint (or half) of ‘Brexit’ or ‘Stronger in’, both are 4.4% strength but have been brewed in very different ways! ‘Brexit’ is very much a British beer,

The beer is only available at the pubs, who are selling both beers - so at the moment they can't tell me which beer is selling fastest, only time will tell! The Brewery are also supporting the Chesterfield Canal Society, they are a business member of the society and on the morning I called in they’d had Rod Auton and Terry Berridge down from the Canal Society together with Tim Stone from Chesterfield CAMRA to mash in the festival beer. “We talked to the society about what taste they wanted from the beer, the guys have a preference for a mid-brown beer, not hoppy

and pale like many of the present specials” explains Chris. “They’re a very dedicated bunch so over the festival weekend we’ll be running the bar and selling the festival ale to take home and enjoy. A percentage of all our sales goes back to the Canal Society so the more people buy the better supported they’ll be. It’s a great way of being part of the local community and giving something back.” The Chesterfield Cricket Festival (3 to 10 July) will also see the brewery mixing up a festival brew. “We sponsor Ben Slater from the club so we’ll be having Ben up to help mash in before the festival and then what better way

to enjoy a pint than taking in the cricket at the Queens Park ground whilst watching the cricket?” This is typical of what the brewery are all about; a place in the community. Part of it, supporting the Battle of Chesterfield celebrations with a Chesterfield 750 brew for instance. “On our stall at the 750 celebrations we sold out of the 750 bottled beers” adds Jon, “it was great to get feedback from people about the brewery, people are always happy to chat about what we’re doing and are always happy to see us at events.”

Keep an eye the premises at the Chatsworth Road Business Park where the brewery are located. They have recently extended and plan to increase the retail space and create a much grander off sales space. Last up, Jon was keen to tell me about the most recent sponsorship deal – already sponsors of the 1866 Lounge at the Proact Stadium, the Brewery hope to have a sponsorship tie with Spanish striker, Angel Martinez and Kristian Dennis who has just signed for the Spireites from Stockport. To help mark the occasion, on Wednesday 8th June they will be holding a Ladies’ Fashion Show and Sale at Ashover Village Hall in conjunction with Blanc Ladies boutique - it promises to be a sell-out event so get your tickets early. I met with Kat Houldsworth at the store (above Nonna's) to see how things have been during their first year. “It has been a steep learning curve starting the business from scratch but we’ve had a great first year on which to build, and we now know so much more about what product, styles and sizes our customers are looking for.” There is a huge range of lingerie at Eleanor Rose, something for everyone from the affordable to the luxurious. Brands include Bestform, Vanity Fair, Royce, Panache, Chantelle, Passionata, Marie Jo, Prima Donna and Aubade. There are bras for all occasions, maternity, teenage, post-surgery, sports, bridal lingerie and non-wired styles as well as a range of swimwear and nightwear. “We have a fabulous range of swimwear and accessories from Australian designer Seafolly, which includes beach bags, flip flops, sandals and shorts, plus a beautiful selection of beach kaftans from Mya Blue Beach” adds Kat. “Prices for our bras start at just £22, which is in line with major high street brands but we can provide a fitting service that’s personal and unrushed” says Kat. “70% of women are wearing the wrong bra size, getting it right is so important because a good fitting bra can do wonders for ladies’ confidence, appearance and comfort. Our brands cater for sizes 28” to 50” back and cup sizes A to K, and if we haven’t got your size or colour in stock we can order for you to collect later or have posted. “We take whatever time is necessary to fit our ladies and we fit using the actual products - we don’t rely on tape measures as sizes vary so much between brands and styles.” Eleanor Rose was established by Katy Newman, previously from Royal Mail, and Kat Houldsworth who was previously in pub management. It was a completely new venture for them both. I’ve often thought about the idea of running a small shop but never made the move, I asked how Katy and Kat achieved it? “Katy had been thinking about setting up the business for a while after leaving Royal Mail and

I was also looking for a new challenge” said Kat. “We decided we’d give it a try. It’s not been an easy job, you need to develop new initiatives all the time. We work hard to win every new customer – but it is very satisfying when that work pays off and you get positive feedback on the service you offer. We’ve learnt so much in this first year of business and we will be using this to understand where to focus our efforts in the coming months.” As well as running the store, Katy and Kat are often out and about promoting their services to a new audience. They've recently been attending local gyms with their Sports Bra range “we do fittings on the day” explains Kat, “wearing a sports bra is so important for ladies who do regular exercise and we thought it would make things easier for them if we took the bras to them and it has proved really popular. We also offer our own Ladies’ Evenings in store, where small groups of ladies are treated to a glass of fizz and a few nibbles, a short talk about the stock and a light-hearted look at the history of lingerie as well as a mini fashion show and an opportunity to shop. These events have proved really popular and we hope to do more of them in future – it’s a great way to get to know our customers personally and have a bit of fun at the same time”. Eleanor Rose are also trialling a service to pocket bras and swimwear for ladies who have had mastectomies with the aim of giving them much greater choice. In October, Eleanor Rose will be supporting Breast Cancer Awareness Month, one part of which will involve a display of “Bra Bunting”. They are appealing to any ladies not to throw away their old bras but to donate them to the shop. After the event the good bras will be re-cycled and sent on to Third World countries for re-use. “We’re excited about the future” says Kat. “We look forward to the opportunity to meet new customers and invite people to come along to the store and take part in our events. I like what Katy and Kat are trying to achieve, when I asked about online sales Kat pointed out that the products they sell need to come with the opportunity to have a personal fitting service, so the internet isn’t a major focus for them and it is an approach to business I find quite refreshing. Playing to prepare for school Whitecotes Primary School's Nursery for three to four year olds. Words: Paul Chapman

hitecotes Primary School has recently added nursery services to the school and their open door policy means you can pop in at any time to see what they have on offer. “The nursery opened in January this year” explains Angela Scholey, Business Manager at the school. “We pride ourselves on the level of care and being attached to the school it’s a great way to introduce children to the school environment before they start.” “Children can join us following their third birthday. There are 26 spaces for either mornings (8:45 to 11:45am) or afternoons (12:30 to 3:30pm) and there are term time sessions available from September, with funded places for three and four year olds. Whitecotes also offer home visit taster sessions to get to know children before they start at nursery.” Lauren Nash is the full time teacher and together with a teaching assistant takes care of the children. “We have both indoor and

outdoor play areas and develop skills that children can take straight into their school years. “With local nursery closures there has been a shortage of good quality childcare locally, we're now able to offer places to address this. A place at Whitecotes nursery will support a child's transition into school, subject to the usual application process, and we will help the children become school ready,’” says Lauren. “Play is at the centre of everything we do as we believe that this is how young children learn the best. We use both the indoor and outdoor spaces, the mud kitchen outside is always popular! Inside we have sand, water, we paint every day, we have lots of small world toys, we visit the school library once a week and even have a PE session.” "Being set within a school environment children do get to be a part of the wider school community which does support the children to become school ready. In the Early Years at Whitecotes school and nursery there is an

emphasis on fun, following the interests of the children and valuing each child as a special individual. We want our children to be happy and engaged in their play and learning and hold a positive first experience of education" says Lauren. "We try and bring the learning to life and offer first hand experiences wherever possible from growing our own tadpoles to frogs and planting herbs to use within cooking to having visitors in the classroom from our local community, for example, nurses and the police. “We bake each Wednesday, make soup, cakes and smoothies to give the children life skills."

Medieval Walk

Continue the Battle of Chesterfield 750 celebrations and explore Chesterfield's medieval heritage with this self guided short walk (see map overleaf). Walk Created by Shirley & Paul Niblock

Start on 1 Saltergate at its junction with Rose Hill East and you are at the North West corner of the medieval town. “Gate” is the old name for a road; Saltergate was the route where salt was brought to us from Cheshire. Go east and turn down 2 Glumangate, this is the street of the Glee Men or Minstrels and is a unique British street name. At the end turn left onto 3 Knifesmithgate, another unique name which may refer to the presence of cutlers. Turn left up Cavendish Street and right at the end onto 4 Holywell Street, the North East boundary of medieval Chesterfield. Follow the road round to the back of the Church, this area was the site of 5 Chesterfield’s market in the 11th Century. Visit 6 The Museum, among the medieval artefacts on display is the builders’ windlass used to construct the church. Walk through the churchyard to admire 7 The Parish Church of St Mary and All Saints, known worldwide as The Crooked Spire. The first record of a church on this site is from 1042, this would have been a much smaller building. The church we see today was started in the 13th Century. Inside find The Anniversary Window as it shows a scene from the 1266 Battle of Chesterfield. Walk away from the church and after crossing Packers Row turn left into 8 The Shambles, the area where butchers slaughtered animals and sold their meat. Most medieval towns would have been like this with small blocks divided by narrow streets, the buildings almost touching. Find The Royal Oak, an inn has been on this site since the 12th Century, it is the oldest pub in Chesterfield and one of the oldest in the country. Come out of the Shambles into 9 the “new” market place, only in use since the 1190s! Page 34 www.s40local.co.uk

Leave the market place by Boots and go down the steps to Beetwell Street, the southern boundary of the medieval town. Across the road, behind the wall on the corner of South Street, is 10 Chesterfield Bowling Green which dates from 1294 and could be the oldest in the country. Make your way back to the market place and at the end of Low Pavement find 11 The Peacock. Now a café, a building has occupied this site since about 1200. This one is Chesterfield’s most complete late medieval building dating from around 1500. It is thought to have been built as the Guildhall for one of Chesterfield’s four Guilds. You might also be interested in these out of town sites. 12 The Priest’s Grave in Spital Cemetery A leper hospital, dedicated to St Leonard, existed by 1171 and gave the area of Spital its name. Bones excavated near the site are thought to belong to one of the priests who worked there. He was re-interred in the entrance of the cemetery with a headstone marking his grave. I love sport more than boring old English!! Alex aged 14! Jo Linthwaite (Kip McGrath)

ast year my mum brought me to meet Jo at Kip ‘cos I was only getting a ‘C’ in my English and she and my teacher thought I should be doing more!

I was fed up with them going on at me but hey she’s my mum!! I met Jo and she wasn’t like a teacher, she asked me what I thought about English and stuff and what I wanted to do in the future. Cool! She showed me some of her English stuff and there were things I didn’t know so I agreed to give Kip a go if it would help me make my writing more interesting. We did the normally boring stuff, like sentence structure, imagery and how to use punctuation properly, but it wasn’t boring at all and great fun because I could do it at my speed and see how much I was getting right as I did it. Now I know what to do with that semi-colon thing! After a couple of weeks I had to do a descriptive piece for school homework and Jo showed me how to plan it out. I wrote it at home and gave it in and got a ‘B’. My mum was well made up and I think Jo was too! I think that was when I started to see it all make sense and how I could do some harder things. I guess the ‘C’ did look a bit like a lower mark for me after a few weeks. The next bit of homework I got another ‘B’ but my teacher told me that I was really close to an ‘A’ because

I was the only person in the class to discuss ‘connotations’ in my homework. I had done it at Kip the week before. If you don’t know what a connotation is, go and ask Jo to show you! The really funny thing is that since going to Kip and working with Jo my better writing has shown up in my other subjects like History and my other teachers have told me they can see a big difference. This year I have started on my GCSE’s and it seems so much easier and my marks are higher so I can see that my GCSE grades are going to be higher as well. I am staying at Kip right through until next year’s exams because my higher grades and sport will get me into the college I want to go to. I still like playing sport more than doing English, but English isn’t boring anymore and my mum is pleased and doesn’t go on at me now, well not unless I leave my room in a mess! Park Hall Open Gardens Times Two! The Park Hall Open Gardens is back! Kim and Margaret Staniforth have been holding an open garden at their home in Somersall for many years but last year they held off as it was becoming too time consuming and they wanted to put their feet up. Garden Things for June Words: Transition Chesterfield This is the busy season in the garden, but, as always, the thing to remember is that it should be relaxing and fun, so don't overdo it or try to stick to some fixed timetable about when things should be done. 1. Weeds are usually successful because they grow and set seed quickly, so remove them before they flower. Various types of hoe can prove to be the best solution at this time of year. An ‘onion hoe’ is often considered to be one of the most versatile tools if used regularly to cut off the young weeds before established. 2. If you have fruit, you can improve the size of individual fruits by thinning out the buds. Now is the perfect time to train the stems of blackberries and other hybrid berries on a frame or wires and pruning your currant bushes to help get maximum yields by stopping plants being overcrowded. 3. Summer bedding plants can be planted out now; soak them very thoroughly beforehand and, if the soil is dry, pour water into the planting hole and let it drain away before putting the plants in, although you should still water them in well – this helps the soil settle.

6. All danger of frost should have passed, so any tender plants that have been germinated indoors or under cover can be planted out. Lots of vegetable seeds can be sown directly into the ground now e.g. beetroot, carrots, courgettes, cucumbers, peas, pumpkins and radishes. 7. Stake plants that have a tendency to flop over, especially those with big flower heads. Ideally, the stakes should be about 20cm (8”) shorter than the eventual height of the plant, so they’re completely hidden when the plants start to flower. 8. Pinching out the growing tips of broad beans will reduce possible attack by blackfly and it will promote setting rather than excess plant growth. This technique can also be used on many other herb plants and flowers like fuchsias, a few weeks after doing this your plants are bushier and more compact. 9. Keep earthing up potato plants and if you are growing them in pots or containers remember to continue to add more compost or soil. Harvesting some early potatoes can usually start after 10-12 weeks of growth. Boiling your first new potatoes of the season reminds you why you bother to grow your own vegetables! 10. Why not try to grow herbs that have the added advantage of being friendly to butterflies? Hyssop, lavender, marjoram and thyme all provide good nectar for these pollinators and will inspire you in the kitchen too!

4. Greenhouses heat up very fast in even hazy sunshine, so they will require the maximum ventilation possible and you may wish to consider some form of shading from now onwards. 5. Creating a regular regime of watering, particularly for tomatoes and peppers, will prevent problems like blossom end rot. Make sure that plants receive adequate watering from this time of year and remember to be consistent. This is particularly important for container grown plants and growbags.

OUR ACTIVITIES IN THE COMMUNITY At the heart of what we do will be community building and eco-therapy, so we will be working with the community to reclaim some land and create an edible organic garden, and developing projects to tackle food poverty.

Chesterfield's New Organic Demonstration Garden Project Members of the community group Transition Chesterfield started the search for a site for a demonstration organic garden following permaculture principles in 2015.

We believe our activities will not only improve the health and well-being of those individuals involved but also act as a springboard for other community development and action.

Our Site lies between the Westfield Allotments, off Ashgate Road and the Fairplay Children’s Charity Garden near to Chesterfield town centre and so we have created ‘The INSPIRE COMMUNITY GARDEN’.
