Introduction Hello all and welcome to issue 4 of S40 Local. I would like to start this month by saying “I’m sorry”. Why? Because last month we experienced problems beyond our control which resulted in all printed S40 Local magazines being water damaged. This was not brought to our attention for a number of days and as a result we had to reprint the entire batch. This created a lengthy delay and some of you may have noticed that many of the “What’s On” items had completed before you read your copy. I can assure you that we have made some changes and this will not be happening again. And can I just say a huge “thank you” to all the people who help me with delivering S40 Local, you pulled out all the stops and I really do appreciate the effort you made to get them through everyone’s letter box. So back to the good stuff, we are still getting lots of positive comment and feedback and I’m very grateful for the way in which people seem to have responded to the magazine. Along these lines I’ve had a few comments back from advertisers and readers ... “Hi Paul, I posted my guitar teaching advert with you in your S40 local magazine and have had at least 3-4 replies which have easily paid for the ad itself, so a big thanks to you for the opportunity, I will definitely consider advertising again in the near future.” This was from Simon Redfern so we know some of you may be making inroads into the world of guitar playing. “Paul, I was pleasantly surprised with the enquiries we had following our advert in the 1st issue. I consider that the professional quality of S40 Local, its relevance to the local area and the ‘keep it local’ message at the heart of the publication, genuinely encourages readers to engage the services of the businesses listed. We will be advertising with you again in the near future.” This one from Dave Robinson at Andersons Tree Care. “I thought I would email you to congratulate you on your magazine - what a great idea and something I look forward to coming through the letter box.” This one makes me smile every time I read it, great to see that someone appreciates the time and effort that goes into S40 Local. This months it’s been exceptionally busy as we lost time, so many new advertisers have joined us and we have details of the “Inkerman Buzz” which promises to be a great event for all those wanting to know how we can live in a more sustainable way. If you want to mention a local event, advertise your business or send us some local pictures please continue to do so, deadline for next few months print runs are shown below to enable you to plan your events and advertisements better. Anyway, thanks for all your support and please ensure you tell the businesses where you saw their adverts when using their services and products. Paul. Call: Email:

Community Page Inkerman Park is going environmental on Saturday 18th July, with 'The Inkerman Buzz'. Open from 11.00am until 4.00pm, the event which aims to raise awareness of our areas history and promote health, sustainability and the environment is in its first year. Organised as a joint collaboration between Walton and West Community Forum, Friends of the Inkerman, Transition Chesterfield and Chesterfield Cycle Campaign. Walton and West Community Forum is funded by Chesterfield Borough Council to provide small amounts of money for projects within the constituency. On the day there will be a host of attractions, including • A wild food expert • Low Impact Living Initiative (displays of solar panels and eco features) • South Yorkshire Energy Centre (concentrating on eco renovation) • Transition Chesterfield
www.the-buzz.co.uk for more details
• Historical Characters • Health checks for blood pressure/diabetes and stop smoking information • A pedal powered smoothie maker • Chesterfield Cycle Campaign - display of bikes, cycle parking, Dr Bike • Riverford organic veg box delivery
• Friends of the Inkerman showing the councils masterplan for the development of the park and a display of local history. • All to the sounds of the Brampton Community Band. … and many more. How to get there – it’s all about sustainability so there’s no parking at the site and visitors are urged to walk or cycle, but we have a preserved bus (Chesterfield 123 Society) running a free service from the site to Walton and the town centre (see map opposite for route and pickup points) and we will be awarding a prize for the most interesting sustainable travel way of arriving. The bus will be departing from Walton shops at 11.00, 12.00 and 1.00, and will pick up along the route of Somersall Lane (5 minutes earlier), Netherfield Avenue, Park Hall Ave, Somersby Avenue and Moorland View Road. Town departues are at 11.30, 12,30 and 1.30 and the Town pick up point is outside the Town Hall on Rose Hill. Departures from the Inkerman site to Walton are at 2.30 and 3.30 and to town at 3.00 and 4.00. So whether you’re a looking for ideas to help you live more sustainably or simply a fun day out – the Inkerman buzz promises to be a great event.

Ever fancied volunteering for Ashgate Hospice and helping with fund raising activities? If so Emily Evans would love to hear from you as they are looking to recruit fundraising volunteers. For more information please contact Emily Evans at Ashgate Hospice on 01246 568801 during office hours.
We received an email from Christian Bradley regarding littering: “May I take this opportunity of mentioning a problem I feel is escalating in Somersall Park. I am becoming increasingly concerned about the throwing of litter all over the park. I’m sure many locals feel as upset as I do when they see drinks bottles, sweet wrappers, lager cans etc left or thrown on the floor by people who don't appreciate the space and beauty on their doorstep. Surely something can and must be done to stop the offenders. A few suggestions I’m sure would help. To request a clean streets officer to randomly patrol the area. Also more signage explaining to those entering the park the need to put all types of litter in the bin. Many more litter bins positioned conveniently around the park for people to use. More litter picking events to create awareness and advertise the fact that we all need to do our bit to help! Maybe you could do some coverage that will hopefully contribute to improving the situation.” Via Janet Aryes at Walton Evangelical Church we tracked down the right contact at the Council who’s response is below, hopefully we’ll see an improvement in the situation. “All of the borough parks are patrolled, primarily for dog fouling, as this generates most complaints and it is harder to clear as part of our street cleansing operations. Last week, two people received fixed
Spire Pride is responsible for the supply and maintenance of bins. As the borough has a high ratio of bins/population compared with similar councils, and financial pressures, we are not supplying additional bins at present. Providing more bins will not address the problem of people being too selfish or lazy to use the nearest bin or take their litter back to their car/home, as responsible people would. We will post more signs where we can, especially if old ones have worn away etc. We plan to run promotional campaigns throughout the year and this will include a litter campaign, though there will be more emphasis on dog fouling. The underlying message, however, is the same – the Council provides many parks which are free to enjoy, use them responsibility for all to enjoy. In July we will support the Keep Britain Tidy Campaign about car litter and we have adverts in council summer leisure journals and further campaigns planned for September”. Our breadth of service styles at St Johns, Walton brings the opportunity to worship in a way that suits you. We hold two services each Sunday, a traditional Holy Communion at 9.00am and a more informal style of service, including all age worship and groups for children and young people, at 10.45am. Our monthly evening celebrations at 6.30pm offer a different style again, and there is a service every Tuesday at 11:30am which is followed by a light lunch, so you don't even have to come to church on a Sunday! We hold many events throughout the year, both social and for learning to which all are welcome. Our parent and toddler group runs every Thursday morning in term time and is a great way for parents to meet and chat while the children enjoy play, crafts and songs. Come along and get to know us, you can be sure of a warm welcome at all times.

Community Page Following our article on Bike Week promoting events happening in Chesterfield, it’s great to hear that some of you attended the rides arranged by the Cycle Campaign guys. Additionally the issue of parking in cycle lanes has been raised by a local resident. We’ll be taking this up with the relevant council contact for comment. In the meantime, if this is something you are guilty of please be considerate to those of us on two wheels, it’s dangerous enough without additional obstacles. Watch this space for comment.

Back Brewing in Brampton Chris Radford, managing director and head brewer gave up his life in computing (Ed: Can’t say I blame you Chris) to re-establish brewing, just 200 yards from the site of the original Brampton Brewery building (where B&Q used to be on Chatsworth Road) – but half a century on. The brewery website charts a fascinating history of Brampton brewing, introducing us to the modern founding members of the brewery and highlights the pivotal role the original Brampton Brewery played in the local community. Chris is quick to remind us that the output of their micro -brewery is tiny compared to the 240,000 pint weekly production of yesteryear, but he and the team take their role in the local community seriously too, and are finding new ways in which to integrate. So do what you can to support one of the oldest local businesses still going in our area and get yourself a pint of Brampton Ale in one of the local ale houses along Chatsworth Road, or at one of the many distributors in the area, or of course -direct from Chris at Brampton Brewery, check out the opening times on the left.
