connecting our community
Introduction Hello all and welcome to our 10th edition of S40 Local. 2010 has arrived! A belated Happy New Year to you all, I hope this coming year brings good things to every one of us. And, if you’re into your resolutions, have a look at page 6 for some ideas, inspiration and local help. It’s been a funny start to 2010, by the time you read this, the ‘big freeze’ might be a distant memory, but as I write the snow is still making it’s presence felt, albeit in a grey slushy way. To remind you we have some great pictures from the Chesterfield Photographic Society. I’d like to say a big thanks to the members who rose to the challenge of capturing so many brilliant local pictures of the snow – check out page 24, we “I would just like to couldn’t include them all, but I hope you like the ones we have say a big thank you, included.
this is without doubt the best advert I have ever placed, I have completed jobs both big and small from the ad, the furthest was one mile away. Save the planet” Steve Rawson Tiling.
I enjoyed a particularly uplifting mountain bike ride on 3rd Jan (two of the pictures in the edition come from this ride) taking in Holymoor, Beeley, Chatsworth and Baslow Edge and although it was excellent in the crisp powder snow with blue skies I’m still a little annoyed at not getting a photo of the 4x4 towing 2 skiers down the road! We have Valentine’s Day coming up, quickly followed by Mother’s Day – if this sounds a bit like I’ve turned into Mr Supermarket, with my Easter Eggs on the shelves before you’ve finished your Christmas Dinner, then I apologise. However, in attempting to keep S40 topical and reminding you to ‘think about buying local’ when buying gifts, I make no apology.
We’ve a couple of new businesses advertising this month – TLC Services, are Marie and Yvonne, qualified in domestic care they provide support for people who need help around the home, next month we’ll feature an article on them so you can learn more about them. Another new business to S40 Local - SRW Fitness, a personal trainer who will work with you to reach your health, weight and fitness goals. Please get in touch with them if you are looking for the services they provide (and mention where you saw them!) And don’t forget to try out “The Poachers Rest”, the newest restaurant on Chatsworth Road. Michael from the Real Ale Corner has reopened on the site of La Bistro Chameleon (near Morrisons), a hearty place to enjoy a meal and a real ale. I hope you enjoy this edition, if you have any comments to make or there are things you’d like to see in future editions, please do get in touch. Best Wishes Paul. Issue 10: January & February 2010 Copy Deadline for March edition is 18th February 2010 Distribution by 7th March

Ten things to do in the garden in January and February January and February can be the coldest months, however there is still plenty to do in the garden. 1.
Lag outdoor taps to prevent freezing
2.
Force rhubarb by putting a bucket on top of it.
3. Reshape and repair lawn edges – but don't walk on the lawn if there is a frost on it. 4. Chit potato tubers in February 5. Prune and reshape: > Deciduous bushes, trees and hedges such as hawthorn, beech, hazel, apple, pears, roses, pyracanthus, and cotoneaster. > Wisteria > Ornamental vines such as virginia creeper > In February prune, buddleia, hydrangea, lavertera, ceanothus, hardy fuchsias and winter flowering shrubs that have finished flowering such as viburnum 6. Plant or transplant deciduous trees, shrubs and hedges 7. Put your lawn mower in for a service and drain any fuel from any petrol powered tools such as hedge cutters – it does not keep ! 8. Keep an eye on your pond to make sure it does not freeze over. If it does rest a hot pan on the surface to melt a hole in the ice. Do not crack the ice – it stresses the fish ! 9. Keep putting food out for birds. 10. If you have not done so already, clear your borders and veg patch of weeds and cover them with either well rotted manure or compost. Valentines Day: Sunday 14th February History. Valentines day comes around again and we look forward to delivering flowers and chocolates and demonstrating our love … but have you ever wondered why? Thanks to the internet I’ve done some research and can confirm that it’s all down to a defiant Priest called Father Valentine ...
More recently Valentine's Day or Saint bothered, perhaps surprise them with Valentine's Day has been celebrated a token of your affection... on February 14, by many, throughout the world. In this new feature we talk to our local businesses so you can get to know them, and the people behind them, a little better. This month I went down to meet the team at Travel Advisors on Chatsworth Road. >> Tell me how Travel Advisors started up? Gail Bateman set Travel Advisors up from her home in January 1999 and after a successful start moved the business to it’s present location on Chatsworth Road in January 2003. Jo Bunting and Barbara Batty then joined the team, Gail between the three of them they can now boast over 75 years experience in the travel industry - including summer sun, ski, cruise and tailor made packages. >> What is it that you do that makes you unique? Travel Advisors is a truly independent Travel Agency, which means we are able to operate a full and extensive range of services and products from any ABTA bonded tour operator - unlike the high street retailers where choice is restricted by being tied to a much smaller group of providers, often from a single chain. Also, we love what we do and pride ourselves on the personal service we can provide.
impact has been as a result of technology. When we started out everything was booked by a phone call, there was no internet, no online service and certainly no way we could have imagined working as we do today. But the internet has had a strange effect, in it’s early days people abandoned the travel agent and booked online for that cheap deal, they were doing all the work themselves. However, we are now starting to see the trend reversing and a resurgence in the interest of booking through an agent. We do the work for you, give you a total price (no getting caught out by hidden charges) and with tour operators like Excel going under, we give a level of security to the whole booking process. >> What’s the best thing about working in the Travel Industry? It has to be the personal service we can offer - you don’t get that when you book online! We all get a kick from matching a holiday to a person’s requirements and seeing the excitement as they leave the shop looking forward to a great time away. >> Go on then, let’s put your years of experience to the test ... Where would you recommend for - a honeymoon, a value holiday, an adventure, some culture or simply the best place to take the family, what are the hot destinations at the moment? Honeymoon: the most popular spot has to be the Far East and Asia. Cyprus gets a lot of takers and there is still plenty of interest in the traditional romantic destinations like Italy, Venice and Paris. There’s also more people getting married abroad with the Caribbean, Greek Islands and Cyprus being popular choices. Value: At the moment this has to be the non-Euro European destinations such as Turkey or Bulgaria. Adventure: Exodus do a great range of adventure based packages top spots being Nepal, Himalayas and Safari’s. We’ve also seen a great deal of interest in Antarctic trips, which we provide through operators who minimise the impact on the environment, and have an awareness of the fragile nature of the area in which they operate. Culture: Egypt, Luxor and Cairo with a cruise on the Nile and we are also seeing a lot of interest in trips to China, where people want to see the Terracotta Army of Beijing following the last Olympics.
Barbara >> So you’ve got 75 years experience between you, you must have seen some significant changes in the industry over this time?
Families: This has to be the traditional Spanish destinations although there are great deals to be had in Key Camps in France.
Yes, there’ve been some major changes, but the biggest 14

S40 Local: Behind The Business >> What are your favourite places?
holiday?
Jo: It has to be the Indian Ocean and Caribbean.
I’d point back at the last answer and recommend forward planning, as the best way to get a great deal, take advantage of the free places on offer etc. Free places are always limited so prices creep up as the offers are taken away.
Barbara: I love Sydney, so much going on. Gail: Aruba
Jo
We also get access to “familiarisation trips” but as we are a small team we very rarely get the chance to take these up. Last year our personal trips included the Greek Islands, Indian Ocean, France and Spain, we are well travelled and have a good knowledge of destinations.
>> If you could offer any tips for a great time away, what would they be? It’s all a bit dull really but it all centres on getting the planning and preparation right, it’s simple things like:
• • • •
Get some good insurance and make sure you know how to get assistance if things do go wrong. Be aware of all the travel details, times, tickets, transfer arrangements etc. Ensure all necessary vaccinations are done in a timely manner.
Bear in mind: Travel Advisors offer a part payment option so you can always pay monthly and help spread the cost. Also, don’t think all inclusive trips are expensive, with the Euro as it is you’ll likely end up spending a lot more on food than you budgeted for. >> What’s the strangest request you’ve had from a customer? We did get a chap book a World Cruise once and he wanted to take his Harley Davidson motorcycle with him! We did enquire but unfortunately it wasn’t to be.
FACT: The QE II had kennels and was equipped with a lamp post for the call of nature by UK dogs and a fire hydrant for the USA dogs!
Last Question: We want to know a bit more about you, so we’ll be asking everyone who sits down with us, where’s their favourite place for food, where do you go to escape from it all and what’s the best thing about being a business in S40? Collective answers from the team included; Food: The Yorkshire Bridge at Bamford, The Peacock at Rowsley and NonSolovino on Chatsworth Road. Escape: Walks around Chatsworth and Linacre with the dogs, and out for a ride on the horse. Work: The community feel you get working on Chatsworth Road, the local Characters you get to know and the change that’s happening along Chatsworth Road with new businesses moving into the area.
Makes sure your passport and visas are valid … and you know where they are!
Once you have the logistics in place you can go away, it’s a holiday so relax and enjoy it. >> What happened to late deals? They used to be very popular, can you still get them? Late deals are still available but not as cheap as they used to be and it’s now considered last minute if you book between 6 and 4 weeks before departure. The reality now is that forward planning is the best way to secure a good deal. If you try to book a last minute break during the school holiday, these actually get more and more expensive the later you leave them, the reverse of what you would expect. >> What’s the best way to get value for money on a

A New Year - Time To Look At Your ISA Options Last autumn, the over 50’s had the chance to top up their Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) six months ahead of the rest of the population following new measures introduced in the Budget last year. From 6 October 2009, savers over 50 years old were able to invest a maximum of £5,100 instead of the previous £3,600 in a cash ISA and £10,200 in a stocks and shares ISA (investors cannot invest more than £10,200 in total). And it is important to make use of your annual allowance as ISAs offer a generous tax break. Yet millions of savers fail to do so – and if you don’t use it, you lose it. “From 6 October 2009, savers over 50 years old were able to invest a maximum of £5,100 instead of the previous £3,600 in a cash ISA” ISAs were introduced 10 years ago to replace PEPs and TESSAs and are a tax wrapper in which a number of different investments can be held. Savers who have made full use of their annual allowances every year since then will have sheltered £73,400 (including the new 2009/10 allowance) from the taxman. (Source: Moneysupermarket.com April 2009). The tax savings offered by ISAs are
20
significant. For those paying tax at the basic rate, you would usually pay 20% tax (2009-10) on savings interest, while higher rate taxpayers would generally pay tax at 40%. People who pay the ‘saving rate’ of tax for savings would pay 10% tax on savings interest. ISAs therefore represent an extremely tax-efficient way to save and invest for the future and form the firm foundation of any long term investment plan. They are a useful short or medium term account for cash, and offer an easy route to the equity markets. However, you should bear in mind that the favourable tax treatment given to ISAs may not be maintained in the future as they are subject to changes in legislation. Furthermore, the rules for investing in them are relatively simple. They are available to almost anyone who is 18 years of age and over (16 for a cash ISA) and a UK tax resident.
two years have shown us that they can be volatile too. So while a stocks and shares ISA is generally the better option over the longer term, cautious investors or people looking at the shorter term may prefer a cash ISA. The flexibility of these investments allows people to transfer cash ISAs to another ISA manager, either into another cash ISA or a stocks and shares one. Stocks and shares ISAs can be transferred to another ISA manager, but only into another stocks and shares one – you can’t transfer stocks and shares ISAs to cash ones. Investors can transfer some or all of the money saved in previous tax years – as well as the current one without affecting their annual ISA investment allowance. Community Shorts Events. You’ve been a bit quiet on the community front recently, perhaps the weather is stopping you getting out and enjoying your selves? If you’ are doing something that will be of interest to the local community, don’t forget that S40 Local is a great way of getting the news to the people of Brampton, Brookside, Somersall and Walton - so please get in touch.
Your Ice Cream Delivery Service. In the last two editions of S40 Local we’ve featured adverts on the Ice Cream delivery service that Fredericks are trialling in the area. Well the weather has caused a slight delay in getting everything up and running, so Fredericks would just like to say “watch this space” as things will hopefully be in place for online ordering ready for March.
The Westfield Parents & Friend Association would like to express their thanks to everyone who attended the Christmas Fair at the school, and helped them raise £2,800 on the day. The Friends of the Cromford Canal, is actively involved in raising funds for restoration. Patrick Morriss is chairman of the group and has recently announced the formation of the "Cromford Canal Trust", a new body where he and the Friends will work together with Derbyshire County Council, Amber Valley BC, Derbyshire Wildlife Trust, Derbyshire Dales District Council and Bolsover District Council … with the aim of making the waterway's entire 17-mile length – from Langley Mill to Cromford and Pinxton – navigable by boat. Contact Cliff at NEDIAS on 234212 for information.
