Introduction Hello Summer! … or have I missed it? Perhaps by the time we’ve been to print and distributed, it will be glorious again? It’s been another busy month for us and we welcome many new businesses to S4o Local, I hope they are as successful in getting their message and names known to the local community as others have been. Hi to Andrew Markwell, at the newly opened Portrait Lounge and all the best with your new studio on Chatsworth Road, sorry I missed the launch party! In July we said that Brampton Brewery are “one of the oldest local businesses still going in our area” apologies, this should have read “one of the oldest local names”. Last months house advert was a move from the norm and Matt has been in touch to say that he received a number of enquiries although it sold just as we went to print, however if you’ve a property to sell in this difficult climate and would like to give S40 Local a try then please get in touch, and don’t worry we can do all the photo’s and layout for you. Somersall Park: There is a survey available from the Council regarding the future of Somersall Park, if you care about what happens then please try to get a copy and let them have your thoughts. Details of how to do this are on the Community Page. Thanks to Colin Harrison of Brookside for his picture taken at Linacre when the Bluebells were out, if you have an interesting local photo we’d love to see it, we might even put it on the cover! If you’ve anything to tell us or to share please get in touch. Paul. Call: Email:

Sorry, but I heard this recently and liked it so much I wanted to share it with you. Two snakes are slithering down the street and one says to the other …“Are we poisonous?” The other answers “ I don’t know why?” The first snake replies “I just bit my lip.”

S40 Local

A Brief History of Chatsworth Road Chatsworth Road is a vibrant mix of independent shops and businesses and I feel proud to live in an area that I perceive as up and coming - but I am also aware that it has a past that I know precious little about.

business on the Wheatbridge site eventually absorbing the Bump Mill site and business.

Talking to people and getting more involved in the community, mostly through S40 Local, has sparked an interest in what was here before, so I’ve done some digging around and managed to track down some of the local history. Thanks to Alan Morey at Chesterfield Borough Council who has let me take some facts from the Chatsworth Road Development Masterplan. If you are interested further then please take a look at the plan which is on the Councils website.

Cannon Mill behind the new Wheatbridge Surgery and Hipper House, with it’s mill wheel is one of the oldest industrial buildings in Cannon Mill Chesterfield, erected prior to 1788 as part of the Griffin Works.

THE HISTORY: In the late eighteen century (that’s the 17 something’s, for those of us who can’t recall) the community living along the River Hipper - Brampton and Walton grew as new industries developed. The area was great for development as it had an abundance of raw materials – coal, ironstone, clay and a good supply of water. Also, in 1777 the Chesterfield Canal opened and although the road network was steadily being improved, it was the canals arrival that made the transportation of goods easier. By the end of the eighteenth century four potteries had started up – the Wheatbridge pottery, two on Upper Moor and one on the Walton side of the Hipper near the present Shepley Street. A significant early industry was the iron foundry, started by John Smith of Sheffield in 1775 – sited just south of Wheatbridge, the business prospered and a new building, The Griffin Works went up between 1788 and 1791 to the north of the Hipper. Army supply contracts during the Napoleonic Wars meant the foundry flourished until the early nineteenth century. Also starting up around 1791, at Brampton Moor, was the candlewick and tape factory Hewitt and Bunting, which later became known as Bump Mill. The expansion continued during the nineteenth century, however Smith’s foundry sold-up in 1830’s and in 1927 the smaller Union foundry was established by the Sneaths. The Bump Mill continued to expand rapidly, several potteries opened and tobacco manufacture, production of woollen cloth, bobbin making, brewing, pill box making and lint manufacture all featured – the last two by the Robinson family, who expanded their

Today we are left with two buildings of historical significance namely;

The second is the Walton works, a complex of buildings, originally a cotton mill, which formed part of the Robinson’s premises, used to produce cotton products. Both are now on the Walton Works statutory list of historical buildings and are grade II listed. The Walton works, because of its early unusual fireproof construction. Obviously loads of you will know more about this stuff than I do, and some of you will have seen the recent history first hand. We’d love you to share the history – as you know it. And next month we plan to talk to Alan Morey at the Council to see how they plan to develop and take the area forward. Did You Know? Prior to being named Chatsworth Road, the road we know as Chatsworth Road was called New Road … well I suppose it had to be at some point in it’s life.

MORE TO LIFE in Holymoorside On Saturday 11th July local music teacher Katy Strudwick, together with the Holymoorside Choral Society and a number of other talented people, played to a packed house at Holymoorside Village Hall. The concert, to raise awareness of the issues facing people who find themselves involuntarily childless, also raised funds of £450 for More to Life. Katy, who played a number of tunes on her flute and lead the choir from her piano, is regional contact for More to Life. She got the idea for doing a concert earlier this year when she accompanied the choir at their Christmas Charity Concert at St Thomas' Church in Brampton. For some of the performers it was the first time they had played in public. The audience was invited to join in with a lively number sung by Duncan Botham called 12345, and also at the end of the concert everyone
