Intro So, 2012 is over and another year has started.

Matt Kane has spent some time talking to people about their thoughts on the year gone and the one ahead. Plus we have chats with businesses, news, stuff to sell, events... you know the usual stuff.

I have a bone to pick with the Mayans - imagine my disbelief, I pulled up my chair on 21 December, glass of port in hand, sunglasses on, waiting to watch the show that was billed as ‘the end of the world’. But I was to be disappointed; all I ended up with was a slight chill and a warm tummy! Apparently 1 in 10 of us are anxious about the possibility of the world ending, but I’m hoping this green and blue planet of ours will be here for a good few years yet. When I met the Chesterfield Astronomical Society this month they gave me some confidence that we should be safe for a few million years - find out what they had to say on page 20!

I’ve also visited the new home for the Chesterfield Panthers Rugby Union Football Club, they have relocated to a very impressive new ground and have plans for fantastic facilities in the pipeline. Here you’ll be able to participate in a whole range of activities - not just Rugby. Another Chesterfield asset to be proud of.

One article I’m hoping will spark debate and encourage your involvement is about the future of the Crispin pub on Ashgate Road - page 36. It seems the corporates of our country have more in store for us. UK Grocery Retailing figures tell us that in 2011 of the £157bn spent on groceries, 71% went to Supermarkets and a measly 3.7% in traditional retail... that’s greengrocers, butchers, bakers, markets! Seeing this has reignited my commitment to try and buy more of my groceries from the market, farm shops, independent butchers and our local food market. It does seem the corporates have all the power and that really depresses me, but this has reminded me to support as many independents as I can.

New for 2013 in S40 Local is our offers page - to try and make your pound go a little further locally. All the offers in the magazine will appear in one place to make it easier for you to find things and to make sure you don’t miss anything! Hope it helps, please bear with me this month, the layout, on page 73, is still ‘work in progress’... I blame man flu!

New Year, New Chesterfield?

The month of January takes its name from Janus, the Roman god of new beginnings and transitions, who famously had two faces one looking back at the past and another ahead to the future.

A

nd to mark our New Year edition of S40 Local we thought we’d do a bit of the same, getting the views of local people on their highlights from 2012 as well as their hopes and aspirations for 2013.

Naturally, the summer of 2012 will live in the memory for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

But while hundreds of people lined the wet London streets for hours simply to catch a glimpse of the Royal Family, one man got more than he bargained for during a trip to mark Nottingham’s Jubilee celebrations.

“I think 2012 will be very difficult to beat for me,” remembers Chesterfield Mayor Donald Parsons.

“Meeting the Queen, Prince William and the Duchess of Cambridge all at the same time at Nottingham’s Council House was rather surreal, particularly after I had met Prince Andrew earlier in the year.

“To meet four members of the Royal Family in one year was something that will always live in my memory. It is something I had always dreamt of and, whilst I’m optimistic about 2013, I’m not sure it can be beaten!”

Amidst a year of Torch Relays and street parties, 2012 also brought some far less savoury revelations.

Yet Ben Harding, who is vicar of St Peters’, Holymoorside and St Thomas’, Brampton, hopes that last year’s bad news will help to bring communities closer together.

“I think 2012 was a year when many of our national institutions – the BBC, the Police, the banks and even the Church of England - were shaken and many people left questioning whether they could continue to put their faith in them.

“One of my hopes for 2013 is that we work out how we can build up community at a local level and see how faith can enrich that. Jesus’ central message after all was to love God with everything you’ve got and love your neighbour as much as yourself, 2013 would be a great year if we can have a go at that!

“Despite the issues we’ve seen nationally, it has been great to see that people are still turning out in large numbers for events at Christmas and on Remembrance Day. Our Carols by Candlelight at St Thomas’ was epic, people having to overflow into the live linked community centre.

“As Christians we believe that, whilst finding answers to some of life’s big questions isn’t always easy, it’s not completely hopeless. As Christians, there is always hope.”

The last twelve months also proved challenging on people’s pockets although one local charity continues to capture people’s imagination and attract solid support throughout the area.

Rebecca Littlewood is Direct Marketing and Communications Officer at Ashgate Hospice.

“This year we’ve noticed that people want to keep their money local. People see the Hospice vehicles around the county and can see the service being provided in the local community,” said Rebecca.

Last year was also a year when the rain came and never went away.

“We realise that these are worrying times for many people financially but we’re pleased that people come out to support us nonetheless.

Having moved from Devon at the start of 2012, Ben admits his introduction to Chesterfield life was less of a baptism and more of a deluge but he has no regrets.

“We feel like local people do pull together to support their local charity. When I speak to supporters, it’s clear that the Hospice is a charity that is close to people’s hearts.

“I think my favourite bit about the year here in Holymoorside was the Well Dressing in the village and, of course, the Scarecrow Festival.

“One in three people are touched by the work of the Hospice so we tend to find that most people either know someone who has received care

by Ashgate Hospice or knows somebody who knows someone who has.

“Even though the Jubilee festivities were mostly rained off it was great to see how much get-upand-go people in the village have and that, even when the weather plays foul, people have a sense of determination and expectation.

“It’s been a year of change for my family but the community we’ve moved in to has been amazingly welcoming and supportive. Now I

“Harleys have moved its hair salon in, Maison Mes Amis has taken over the former Prince of Wales pub and Meringue has moved from Beeley. Pelican Cycles, Flower House, Pooky and Lilypad are also continuing to do well around there.

“We’ve the usual favourites – Woofs and Wellies, the Midnight Walk and the Fancy Drag Race – and we’ve also got a celebration lunch coming up in March and a big service planned at the Crooked Spire in October to mark the anniversary of the Hospice opening.”

Despite the uneasy economic situation, Chesterfield again bucked the national trend in 2012 with a number of new retail developments and exciting plans for the future.

Destination Chesterfield Manager Dominic Stevens explains.

“Chesterfield continued to prosper as a retail destination in 2012, with retail occupancy being the third highest in the country,” says Dominic.

“Alongside this we saw the opening of the new Debenhams store and the announcement of the Northern Gateway, a new leisure and retail scheme for the Donut roundabout.

“The Sheffield City Region Local Enterprise Partnership Board recently approved £2.4m funding from its Growing Places Fund for the Chesterfield Waterside development for infrastructure improvements and it is hoped that the housing element of the development will start in 2013.

“Destination Chesterfield will continue to promote the town and our new plan will be launched in March. This will include launching a new inward investment marketing campaign to promote further investment into the town.”

And the feel-good factor hasn’t just been confined to the centre of town as Chatsworth Road’s selection of independent shops and restaurants continued to expand apace over the past 12 months.

“The middle section of Chatsworth Road is now shaping up quite nicely,” says local business owner Deirdre Gage.

“The area has always been great for small independent businesses and other than Morrison’s and Majestic Wine you’ll struggle to find another big name brand along Chatsworth Road.

“Teresa Lambrelli has been really vital in dynamically changing her restaurant in terms of bringing new ideas to a well-established and well-respected business and we’ve seen the St Thomas’ Centre and Food Market go from strength to strength and become very popular.

“In the past I’ve spoken to people about the area being a great place to shop and now people who don’t know me tell me what a brilliant place it is!”

As well as owning Created Gallery, Deirdre is also Chair of the steering group that coordinates activity for the Chatsworth Road Festival which proved another hit last year.

Plans are already afoot to make this year’s Festival the best so far with more events than ever before.

“One of the new things we’re going to be doing for 2013 is to have a number of coordinators to help facilitate aspects of the Festival,” explained Deirdre.

“This includes a pubs’ coordinator to liaise with the pubs and encourage them to put on events for the Festival in the same way that the business coordinator helped the businesses get involved last year.

“We’re also going to have an arts coordinator who will be working with various groups no matter whether it’s painting, drawing, making or performing and a community coordinator who will encourage events that improve community spirit such as the clutter clearance and the cycle ride we had last year.

“We don’t quite know what the coordinators will come up with because they need to tap into what might be happening during the Festival and encourage them to start to plan for events.

“Last year was very much about getting the businesses on board, 2013 is about increasing community involvement and getting the pubs and arts based businesses on board.”

This year could well be a defining year for the town centre with the opening of the refurbished Market Hall in the autumn, the progression of the Northern Gateway scheme and the opening of TK Maxx in February.

New businesses can also look forward to benefitting from Destination Chesterfield’s new Incubation Street start-up scheme and there will be another community festival in May celebrating all that is great about Chesterfield.

The next twelve months could also see a major new development agreed for Chatsworth Road with the potential transformation of the former Walton Works site to include a new supermarket and residential development.

“In terms of the Walton Works site, it is hopefully coming to Chesterfield’s Planning Committee over the next three months.

“It’s a massive site, it’s been derelict for 10 years and as a local councillor I would love to see it rejuvenated with the right development.

“A lot of things will bounce off a development on that site including jobs while it’s going up and jobs when it’s built. It’s going to bring more people to the area so they can sample what the west side of Chesterfield has to offer.

“Of course, the Council is conscious of getting it right because we can only put so much retail in the town, but if a big development like the one proposed gets off the ground, in that area, I will be thrilled to bits.”

It is a proposal that has already sparked a lot of debate but one which Borough and County Councillor Keith Morgan is keen to see get off the ground.

Chesterfield Astronomical Society “The enormity of space fascinates me – it’s so immense and overwhelming. And lots of our understanding remains theoretical – we’ve learned an awful lot in a very short period of time but there are loads more unanswered questions. The universe is the biggest remaining mystery and that for me is very exciting. At the observatory I can meet with other like-minded people with a love of space and together we often learn new things about this amazing subject.” Mark Eustace is a member of the Chesterfield Astronomical Society based at a purpose - and community - built Observatory tucked away on Newbold Road behind the Nag’s Head pub. Mark invited me to join the society for a meeting on a clear but bitterly cold night.

targazing and Astronomy have become popular and moved more into the mainstream with Professor Brian Cox and Dara O’Briain hosting the popular Stargazing Live programmes over the past three years. This year the event took place from 8 to 10

January. The Chesterfield Society took part hosting talks in Bolsover and attending a live broadcast from Leicester University. “Last year 400 people visited the Observatory and it was featured on TV. We’ll be having some events this year and if previous years’ interest is anything to go by we can

The society meet every Friday evening at the observatory. Their President regularly presents about what’s currently visible in the night sky, followed by socialising and star gazing. When I visited, Reinhold’s presentation was about the Greek hero Perseus, son of Zeus (Roman name Jupiter), the King of the Gods, god of sky and thunder, and generally one impressive chap chosen because the Perseus constellation was visible, so we also had the opportunity to view.

The presentation was supported by computer software that showed a map of the sky and enabled you to zoom backwards and forwards on the screen through light years, showing a vast

array of stars and constellations, not visible to the naked eye.

By combining computer technology with a motor driven telescope you can locate and identify visible stars, planets, moons and deep space objects - it figures out exactly where you are - you select what you want to look at and the telescope will go to it for you! Once at your chosen viewing point the scope tracks the object as it moves. Truly amazing!

No more scanning around trying to match what you’re seeing through a telescope with a book and becoming despondent when you can’t find what you are looking for!

The observatory building itself is interesting, Mark explained. “The observatory has been here since 1960. The founding member, Horace Barnett came from Sheffield Astronomical Society and wanted to build something better for Chesterfield. He enlisted the support of two members of the British Astronomical Association, Val Warburton and Douglas Saunderson, both from Chesterfield. The Chesterfield Tube Company donated raw materials and Horace started the project.

In 1956 the Chesterfield Astronomical Society was formed with eighty members. They leased the Newbold site and designed a 5.5m observatory with a hemispherical dome for the telescope and an adjoining lecture room. They were offered used bricks from a demolition and members started digging the foundations... with spades!

The roof was completed using donated aluminium sheet and girders. Despite the building coming along, it was still without a telescope, which needed a mirror. Val Warburton took responsibility for this onerous task and spent 200 hours polishing the mirror until it was perfect.

After three years of hard work, in 1959 the society made its first real observations through the new telescope housed in its new home.”

If you’d like to take a look at the observatory, the society host an annual open day. The next one will be announced shortly. The observatory opens from lunchtime - yes you can see a few stars during the day and of course the sun - viewed through a special telescope that protects the eyes! There’s food, a raffle, talks and astronomical equipment.

gazing” adds Mark. “Come along any Friday, ask questions, get advice about telescopes and see the astounding sights the night sky has to offer.”

The society also host private sessions for up to 25 people - the members tailor presentations to suit their audiences - from young children to adults and introduce people to space through their main large telescope and smaller ones set up outside. “Our laser pointer has a two mile range which makes a fantastic night pointer,” explains Mark.

Connor and Joe, both age 6 visited the Observatory in early January, and really enjoyed their visit “The Observatory was fantastic, it was good fun looking through the telescopes, we saw Jupiter, Betelgeuse and Sirius” During my visit I had the opportunity to take a look through the large telescope - it wasn’t what I expected - built in a hollow skeleton and lacking a surrounding tube, but it was amazing to see Jupiter and to have its stripes pointed out to me.

The smaller scopes set up in the observation area outside were focused on a bright and beautiful

moon, giving me the chance to take a look at the craters close up.

What I found great about my night in the cold was how enthusiastic and welcoming the society’s members are. In fact we’ve booked a visit for the kids and their friends I was so inspired!

o 2013 is here, the chocolates all gone, the gyms are full and our intentions are good! The New Year brings new hope and a fresh enthusiasm to get fit and healthy, but with diets for every occasion, contradicting advice and our demanding lifestyles how do we really make time to eat a ‘balanced’, ‘varied’ and ‘healthy’ diet?

One of my favourite comedians Dylan Moran elaborates “You come in from work and, if you’re getting very adventurous, you think ‘Tonight we will eat something that has two colours in it.’ But you don’t.

You end up eating bread from the bag, dipping it into anything runnier than bread!”

For some of you this may ring true but hopefully the reality isn’t as dire as that! The problem is we often allow our taste buds to dictate what we eat rather than giving our bodies what it really needs.

We all know fresh vegetables, lean meats, oily fish, fruit and plenty of water is the way forward, and chocolate, cake, crisps, wine, beer, etc, taste lovely, but are nutritionally worthless. Finding a happy medium will provide a maintainable and rewarding way forward but how do we do it?

Three steps to changing your diet:

1.

Food Diaries: Record everything you eat

Just writing it down makes you realise what you eat and identify areas where you need to improve;

2.

Eat breakfast!

3.

Plan your weeks meals and buy food accordingly

I’m sure you’ve heard if before, but breakfast really is the most important meal of the day. It’s exactly what it says it is, breaking the fast you have maintained whilst asleep. Starting the day without breakfast leads to bad choices and cravings for biscuits or chocolate mid-morning, to raise the blood sugar levels; Plan your meals in advance - set out what you’ll have for breakfast, lunch and dinner for each day - it doesn’t have to be difficult, left overs from your evening meal can be tomorrow’s lunch!

Below is a sample meal plan for one day:

the project management side enormously. (So many clients are amazed that tradesmen arrive on site on the day and time they are supposed to!)

One of the nicest things which a client said to David early in his career was, “I’m so glad they sent a designer and not one of those salesmen. Someone who actually listens instead of talking at us” David was born and brought up on the “White City” in Chesterfield and survived Brim Boys. Career options from there were either follow your father down the pit or go into engineering. He chose the latter. After completing an apprenticeship he decided to follow his lifelong passion for art. An Arts Foundation at Chesterfield College then led onto an Honours Degree in Product Design at Leicester DeMontford.

David joined Kitchen Creation and soon became their Showroom Designer and Special Projects Manager – helping them become the biggest independent kitchen retailer in Britain. In the late 1980s he project managed Showroom projects in excess of £500,000.

In the early 1990s a sales position beckoned at Texas Homecare (remember them?) where he had great fun learning the basics of designing and selling real kitchens direct to the public.

After 6 happy years he was approached by an old colleague who’d set up an upmarket kitchen/ bedroom business (New Interiors). This lead to much more exciting projects giving David the opportunity to use his creative flair and develop his product knowledge and awareness. He had total responsibility from scoping the initial design through to handing over the finished room.

By the time the recession bit 13 years later David had become Freelance and was working regularly with a Chatsworth Road Kitchen Studio. A 12 month period in Harrogate (the design capital of the north) was an enjoyable

period (even with a 1hr 40min commute each way) enabling David to work at the highest level.

Eventually it made sense to return to his roots in Chesterfield where he could help more clients, both old and new (80% of David’s business is either repeat or recommendation). By keeping tight control over the project it means that the end result, rather than some diluted version of the original vision, becomes the client’s dream kitchen and not what someone else decided would ‘do’.

Looking at David’s past projects it is clear that he takes a great pride in the finished product, “I like to think I am able to provide solutions others haven’t considered. Function is important but so too is the fit with the property, the fit with the customers use and also their lifestyle... does it need to be traditional, tough to withstand the knocks that a young family can deliver, or does it need to be highly stylish and cutting edge? All are equally enjoyable to produce” adds David.

David uses all local fitters, people he’s worked with over 15 years in the trade and are experienced and well established, “I have an excellent team available, all first class and very flexible” says David.

The Crispin The Crispin Inn on Ashgate Road has been a public house since 1840, named after St Crispin, and originally a hostelry for weary travellers to rest as they brought salt to the tanneries of Chesterfield.

Today, it’s nestled in what should be a fantastic catchment area, with no close rival, in a well populated area, and yet it’s not what it once was. It used to have two football teams and was regularly packed seven days a week. Now it’s notable only for the fact that it’s become the latest in a long list of mismanaged pub-co*1 owned pubs to be in decline, and lined up to become Chesterfield’s 9th Tesco owned store.

It’s a fate that’s befalling pubs up and down the country, and a story that’s becoming all too

Then there’s the supermarket debate. A supermarket round the corner would be really convenient, their prices are cheap and they offer great rewards, but should I be worried? If they’re successful isn’t that a good thing? They say they’re bringing jobs, but how many jobs?

Won’t all shops soon be loaded with self service machines and a few people on hand to sort out any problems? So perhaps there won’t be that many jobs? And what about the independent traders who have to try and compete - will Tesco price them out of the market? Then all the money I spend on groceries will go straight to Tesco’s shareholders? It’s unlikely to be spent in Chesterfield I know that much. They’ll have a national chain of people to fix things, so they won’t use a local plumber or tradesman as an independent business owner might have done - so there’ll be less money locally to spend and support other small businesses.

Many of the conversions seeing local residents mounting campaigns of resistance, but in the majority of cases, resistance is indeed futile. The conversion of a pub to a supermarket is a change of use that doesn’t require planning permission - only things like car parking, signage, and an ATM require approval so typically change can slide through unchallenged.

In some cases it’s seemingly inconsequential, but there are complex underlying issues that open up the debate and leave opinion divided.

There are debates to be had about the demise of our local pubs - does it matter? Why is it happening? Have people stopped drinking or taken to drinking at home? Are we less sociable or is it purely cost related? Whose fault is it?

There’s the debate about the pub-co’s on this and how their greed puts their landlords out of business. This topic was recently debated in the House of Commons and resulted in new regulations that will ensure pub-co’s charge their tenants fairly.

The fact is, there are people who are genuinely concerned about the trend to turn pubs into supermarkets, and they’re campaigning to take a stand against the current plan for the Crispin pub. That’s not to say they want the pub to stay as it is and wither and die. There’s a view that says if it’s to stay - to be viable, it needs to become vibrant and introduce innovative new ideas - that’s where you come in.

They’re looking for your support, ideas and opinions. If the general consensus is, ‘so what I’d quite like another Tesco’ and we don’t need a pub in our community they want to hear that, but equally if you’re interested in supporting the development of real focal point for local activities, they’re holding a community meeting on the 4th February to canvas opinion and collect ideas, or you can sign the petition at The Crispin or online as shown opposite in the Campaigns Flyer. *1 Pub-co: Parent company who own a large group of pubs operating tied contracts with the tenant managers.

that most modern new builds get built generically and little thought is given to how the people will live in them, apart from putting in the basic necessities such as living room, dining area, kitchen and bedrooms etc.

When such houses are built randomly in this way it means that new homebuyers result to extending or modifying the space in order for it to fit their own bespoke requirements. In today’s modern society, people are much more in tune to what is available to them and this provides an opportunity to build it right in the first place.

When new builds finally get completed the last thing to get resolved is the garden area which accounts for probably 50% or more of the living space.

In the majority of cases the garden is finished off with a green desert (grass) and cheap concrete pavers providing only a suitable space for hanging out your washing and the fortnightly mowing regimes.

There are seldom any inspired gardens that encourage or invite the homeowner to spend more time in their garden and the poor layout and connection with the house intensifies the situation.

The home and garden should respond to each other and the needs of the occupant and a full analysis of how the space is or could be used is essential to getting the design right. In this new way of thinking the inside living space automatically shapes the outside, while the outside landscape responds to the spaces inside and the surrounding nature.

Added transparency through

the use of glass can really connect the two spaces and simultaneously the inside-ness of the building provides greater safety and secureness while spatially the inside connects better with the landscape surround. The existing nature i.e. trees, views, sounds and wildlife need to be encapsulated into the design thinking and exploited from the start of the process.

There are four easy ways to improve the connectedness of the inside/ outside.

1. Space In between – create a zone on the transition, neither inside nor outside that acts as a comfortable place at the edge of these spaces. A place to sit, view and relax. This zone provides a unique experience and allows the connection of inside/ outside to flow effortlessly.

2. Integration by building – is the extension of the house into the landscape i.e. a terrace/ seating area that protrudes out into the garden space and provides the occupant good accessibility into the natural environment.

3. Integration by landscape – is the engulfment of the building/ space by the landscape i.e. the views exploited into the garden through large windows, bifolding doors or sky lights that focus onto something specific and breathe nature into the home/ inside spaces.

4. Fusing the inside/outside – is the utilisation and echoing of distinct local features by providing a trace of the outside inside such as material, vegetation or similar surrounding shapes and a trace of the inside outside by migrating tables, chairs, ovens

and colours that blend and fuse the two separate spaces.

An important final element to this synergistic approach is to incorporate the living creatures of the area. By planning your new spaces you can actively encourage wildlife into your garden by careful choice of planting. This additional benefit can really bring to life and animate your new living space while doing you own little bit for the environment.

Notice in Derbyshire Times 15th November 1919 n 6 years time, the Chesterfield Panthers will be celebrating their centenary. In time for their centenary, they’ll be fully functional in their new Dunston home complete with three pitches, a floodlit grass training area, excellent floodlit outdoor facilities including two football pitches, a cricket square and an all-weather multi-use games areas, equipped with basketball and five-a-side, topped off with a state of the art club house.

Recently I caught up with Mike Norton and Fred Pell (both members of the club’s committee) at the new ground. It was early January but the sun shone for a few hours as I approached the ground. What immediately struck me was how professional the set up was, a brand new approach road, a decent car park, an impressive vista of fresh green pitches in a setting that in years to come will look fabulous.

I chatted to Fred and Mike and it was apparent that times are changing for CPRUFC. Next to the car park are two shipping containers, presently being used as temporary changing rooms, not a patch on the new purpose built facility that’s in progress on the other side of the parking area.

The club recently took final payment for the old ground at Stonegravels so funding can be released to start the build, which is planned to be complete early this summer.

The first game was held on pitch three on 3 November 2012 and Chesterfield played host to Long Eaton who won 12-10, a close game where with two minutes to go Chesterfield paid the ultimate price, made some wrong decisions and Long Eaton got a rolling maul going to win the game. To say the home team were gutted is an understatement - a cruel result for Chesterfield who deserved better.

Chesterfield hold sessions for Seniors, Ladies, Juniors and Minis where there are a range of squads playing from age 6 to 17. Due to popular demand the club recently started Panther Cubs for youngsters between the ages of 2 and 6, it’s an engaging, fun and energetic coaching session for girls and boys. The emphasis is on skill development and fun not competition and children learn about the etiquette of the game – developing social skills, manners and learn to share and work in teams, through focus on basic ball handling skills, passing, kicking, throwing and ‘evasion’ games to encourage activity.

The club are always on the lookout for new blood at all levels, so if you want try out please give them a call or why not visit the ground for one of the training nights or home games.

The club aims to become central to the community, opening up the facilities to everyone, and there are lots of ways to get involved, regardless of whether rugby is your sport. The facility will host a wide range of community activities including archery, football, cricket and table tennis, as well as Rugby.

For local businesses or individuals there’s an opportunity to support the club and gain exposure through advertising by sponsoring areas of the ground, facilities and team strips.

There’s a sponsor a brick scheme, for £25 or £100 - you can literally be built into the fabric of the club house - your name or business name will be etched into the bricks used for the interior wall of the club house, there for posterity. You can sponsor pads on the goalpost or advertise on hoardings around the pitches etc.

Brampton Manor & ICON Support for Olympian Ellie Koyander Derbyshire winter Olympian Ellie Koyander from Tideswell, previously featured in S40 Local, has been given a boost to help her in her quest to qualify for a second Olympic Games in 2014 in Russia, thanks to a £500 donation from sports club Brampton Manor.

You may remember during the Chatsworth Road Festival 2012, Brookfield School and Select Interiors were running a rug design competition for ‘A’ Level Textile students.

First prize was to be 2 rugs (6’ x 4’, 1.8M x 1.2M) manufactured to the winning design, one for the student and another to be raffled off for charity.

Brampton Brewery Stunning double Gold at beer competition At Nottingham Castle the SIBA Midlands Beer Competition 2012 was the biggest ever, with over 300 beers being entered across 13 categories. Draught and bottled beers were blindtasted by 113 judges to whittle the entered beers down to a Gold, Silver and Bronze medal winner in each category.

Brampton’s pale and hoppy Tudor Rose at 4.6% secured ‘Gold’ in the Premium Bitters category - an award Brampton have previously won with their 5.0% Wasp Nest. Next, the robust Brampton Mild at 4.9% secured another ‘Gold’ in the Porters, Stouts, Old Ales and Strong Milds category. 10 things to do in the garden

As I write this the weatherman tells me there might be some snow falling over the next few days. If it doesn’t then maybe it’s time to pull on the wellies and start getting the garden ready for 2013 too.

1.

If you were given an Amaryllis for Christmas, feed it fortnightly until the flowers fade – this will help if flower again.

2.

Chit potatoes. If you’ve bought seed potatoes, put them in a cool but light place, not touching, to allow some shoots to develop. Egg boxes are ideal for this (see reminder below).

3.

Continue pruning fruit trees (except soft fruit) and gooseberries, red and white currants.

4.

Sow broad beans in pots but under cover.

5.

Bare-root trees and shrubs can still be planted as long as the ground isn’t frozen.

6.

Ideally hedges should be ‘battered’ – wider at the bottom than top, but they usually end up the other way round. It can require drastic pruning to correct, so do it in stages, or one side at a time – now is the ideal time to carry out the first stage.

7.

Cut out the old leaves of hellebores (Christmas roses) to show the flowers off better.

8.

Common advice is to split clumps of snowdrops ‘in the green’, that is after the flowers have faded but the foliage is still green. However, research by the Royal Horticultural Society has proved there is no benefit, and often the reverse, in doing this, and they should be treated like most other bulbs – split and transplanted when dormant, after the foliage has died back.

9.

House plants should be moved to as light a place as possible; weak winter sunshine won’t do them any harm, but directly above a radiator isn’t good.

10.

This isn’t specific to any season, but if you’re going to spend time in the garden (especially if the weather isn’t great), always try to do one job that looks obvious; some pruning, general border tidying or maybe some digging. That way, when you’re finished, you (and your family!) will be able to see that you’ve really done something.
