Intro Hi and welcome to the July edition.
We’re already on countdown to the third Chatsworth Road Festival - 5 to 13 October, and there’s a deadline looming. If you’re hosting an event, and would like an event listing in the Festival Guide, the committee needs to know the details by the 15 July. It would be great to see the Festival include even more people, community groups, businesses and events this year, so if you’re thinking about getting involved we’d love to hear from you. If you’d like to become involved but don’t want to organise an event, the committee are looking for bunting makers! We’d like to decorate Chatsworth Road so more people who are passing through can see what’s going on. But it’s a really long road, so if you’d like to donate bunting or would like to hold a bunting making party and donate the prepared bunting, we’d be really grateful - please drop any bunting at Created Gallery or give me a call and I’ll collect it! S40 Local is running a Festival Writing Competition, where budding writers can put pen to paper for a piece about ‘Where we live’. The winners will have their piece published in S40 Local and there are some great prizes up for grabs! Have a look at page 30 for more info. We have some new advertisers for this month - some are brand new businesses, some are existing businesses who have been here for a while and have chosen to advertise with S40 Local and others are expanding and offering new products. Earlier in the week I drove along Saltergate and noticed the new Avondale Surgery rising like a ‘Pheonix from the Ashes’ from the old Manor School site. Opposite, there’s the new housing development occupying the space where Chesterfield FC once played and along Sheffield Road the old rugby ground is being developed as a residential site. We’ve an article by Godfrey Holmes about a smaller local redevelopment at Treeneuk - where one house has gone and a small development is to replace it. Things seem to be happening, more ‘Sold’ signs where ‘For Sale’ boards stood and the outlook seems a little more positive. To support the 10% independent campaign (a quest to spend £1 in every ten with a local business), I spent some time at the market - part of Chesterfield’s heritage and in need of our support if it’s to thrive. I also met this year’s Mayor Cllr Paul Stone - his outlook and viewpoint is somehow different from the previous Mayors and his focus for the year is on supporting people facing challenges - take a look at his facebook group for more information - Challenges http://www. facebook.com/groups/413327085442184. Lots happening. Seems like we’ll be busy over the coming months. Have a happy start to summer, Paul.

Chesterfield Market
In last month’s edition I commented that “Chesterfield is, for me, first and foremost a market town” and if you’ve been taking the 10% independent challenge, to spend 10% of your weekly budget in places other than the major supermarkets, it’s a great place to hit your target in one go. I met Andy Bond from Chesterfield Borough Council’s Regeneration team and Karen Walker, Marketing and Promotions Officer for the Market, in Number 10 The Tearoom. Andy has responsibility for the market “to ensure we have a viable and vibrant town centre and the market plays a very important role in delivering this.” “Chesterfield Market is over 800 years old and has existed since
1165” explains Andy, “Created by King John it’s been at the heart of our town ever since. A cattle market at first, it’s changed massively over time. Today, market days are on Monday, Friday and Saturday with the Flea market on Thursday - and a number of regular stall holders standing every day except Sunday. It’s a destination for tourists, but also a real hub of the community for the people who live here.” The Market Hall was built in 1857 to provide shelter and protection for traders and closed last year for a £4.2M refurbishment. It’s due to reopen in October this year. This investment demonstrates a desire to ensure the market thrives and its importance, alongside the Crooked Spire, for pulling in the tourists and money for our local economy. So why does our market survive? “ It continues to have fantastic support from the residents of Chesterfield and that has a lot to do with its position, it’s right at the heart of town surrounded by retail” answers Andy, “take a look at towns that have moved their market out of the town square and they tell a different story, most of these are now in demise if indeed they are still operating.” “We’ve got a fantastic range of stalls, some such as Aryes and Ibbotsons, who both sell fruit and veg, third and fourth generation family businesses which have been part of Chesterfield for over 80 years.” But markets offer real opportunities for young people and new businesses too. Taking a stall is a relatively low risk way of starting up in retail and testing the market and a product - and there are stalls available for rent. With the market playing such an important role, it’s worrying that the typical customer is over fifty. Andy and his team also recognise that they need to attract new people. “We have fun days and themes that bring young families into town, the Day of Dance, the Christmas Light Switch
Page 4 • www.s40local.co.uk
Love Your Local Market 2013 NABMA is the National Association of British Market Authorities and in May 2013 promoted Love Your Local Market week. This was a result of the Portas report aimed at recognition of your local market and it’s role. 600 markets took part and over 2000 new stalls stood that week, Chesterfield took part and four new businesses have taken a permanent stall in town. “Chesterfield’s performance was so good we were amongst the top three or four markets with regards to new businesses and retention of the new stalls” says Andy.
On, they’re not just about the event but about familiarising people with the market. “It’s a different kind of shopping experience to the supermarkets, there’s hustle and bustle and plenty of banter. Regulars who shop here know the stall holders and build up relationships with them. A market is a place where people can interact and have some fun, that’s the environment we want to maintain”. “We also have a monthly Farmers Market, Continental Markets twice a year and new initiatives like the Young Enterprise Scheme run with Chesterfield College and local schools, where around 15 new businesses set up stalls. So we’re targeting a younger audience to encourage them to get involved and support the market.” So how is our market doing in real terms? “It’s doing well. We have between 120 and 140 stalls on for the general markets, so there is room for new traders, the Flea market’s 240 stalls are sold out and I could rent 50 more if I had space!” With the range of stalls, could I get my full weekly shop at the market? “I think you would be close” answers Andy, “there is a fantastic variety of products being offered, you might have to use butchers, bakers etc but we have independent traders close by to the market place.” What about dry goods and tins I ask, “If you dig and search around you can find things you might not think available and if it’s soup you want, we’ve all the ingredients to make your own!”
I often feel like the market gets spread out in town, occupying street sites along Low Pavement and wonder why it’s not confined to the Market Place. “It’s about footfall” explains Andy, “the normal market needs to trade. The street stalls sell products that compliment the market and need people to see them, so we use the street sites to ensure trade is good for everyone.” The issue of footfall and space is top of the agenda at the moment. Alongside the
10% Article redevelopment of the Market Hall there are plans to open up the central area of the Market Place so that as you leave the sheltered stalls in the building you are met with a new central aisle through the market to encourage a flow through the centre, opening up the space. I was encouraged that Andy and Karen are working to maintain our market and relieved that Chesterfield market has survived whilst others have met their demise! I hope the national interest in seasonal products and independent retailers leads to more people becoming regulars
to the markets, and brings people flooding back to support this centre of the community. I left town with two bags of shopping, 18 items in total, 11 purchased from the market or an independent store, and a feeling that I have saved myself some money and remembered a phrase I’d read at the Eden Project a couple of week’s earlier ‘my wallet is indeed my weapon’ and how I choose to spend my money has a real impact!
Market Trader:
Paul Hind Top Cards Greetings Cards
Having discussed the market with Andy I had a quick chat with Paul Hind whose stall Top Cards Greetings Cards is positioned directly opposite Boots. “This is a family business” says Paul, “I’ve been working on the market since school, it’s 35 years now at the same pitch and here for every market day, three days a week... come rain or shine and I also do a day at Derby.” “I love it. It’s a way of life for me, hard work but interesting. Chesterfield’s market fits perfectly with our town centre, I think it plays a vital role but we do need to encourage young new businesses to take up stalls. There is space and it’s important that we cater for the needs of the younger shoppers to make sure the market is still here in 10, 20, 30 years.” Records show that
Facts: Chesterfield’s market
was earning royal revenue as long ago as 1165, when the Sheriff of Derbyshire recorded an account of £1 2s 7d from the market of Chesterfield. However, it wasn’t until the Charter granted by King John in 1204 that the town held the right to hold a market twice a week and an annual 8 day fair at the Feast of the Holy Cross in September. In the early 1220’s it outgrew its original site near the ‘Crooked Spire’ church and moved to its current location next to the market hall. Today, as well as the two main markets on Main Square and New Square there are also additional stalls on Central Pavement, Burlington Street and Packers Row. The traditional Market Hall was originally built in
Page 6 • www.s40local.co.uk
1857 ‘for the shelter and safeguard of market people’. The council bought the Hall in 1873 and over time the Market Hall has been added to and refurbished but it remains essentially a fine Victorian centrepiece to a thriving market. In the 18th century, sales of cattle and horses were held on the Market Square and adjoining streets, sheep and pigs being sold in an area set out in New Square in 1828 - hence the local name Swines Green. Saturday is the longest established market day with the Monday market first being held in 1923, Friday beginning in 1965 and the Thursday Flea market in 1983. The market trading tradition continues and Chesterfield Market, with a vast array of stalls to browse round, is still one of the largest – and best – in the country.

Financial Update
Ensure your pension pot lasts as long as you do. Pension thoughts from Peter Boardman, Somersall Financial Management Ltd.
Once in a blue moon your local newspaper salutes a local resident who has reached the grand-old age of 100. Yet by all accounts, local papers may soon have to devote an entire weekly page to people living to 100 because we are living much longer. It will lighten many moods to learn that the total number of centenarians is projected to rise from 14,500 in 2012 to 110,000 in 2035. It’s estimated that 13% of males and 18.2% females aged 50 in 2012 will reach their landmark 100 year birthday. And of your new born children, around one-third of babies born in 2012 in the United Kingdom are expected to survive to celebrate their 100th birthday (Source: Office for National Statistics, March 2012). Of course, people living longer will have an impact on our pensions and long term care systems and, perhaps more importantly, it will greatly affect your own plans.
The pensions landscape has changed and people need to make the most of their savings so they can sit back and enjoy their retirement. For the vast majority of people, a single pension provides the bedrock for their income. Now today it
is more than that. In the past, as people grew older their investment portfolios became risk averse. They reduced their exposure to equities and generally avoided investments that put their capital at risk. But times are changing and this may not be the most suitable strategy to adopt. People are living longer, with many likely to work past the formal retirement age, which itself is set to increase to 67 from 65 between 2034 and 2036. Working longer could mean that turning on the income tap may not necessarily be given such a high priority for many in their early-50s, as there may still be a need to accrue capital. In any case, if you’re still working, whether full or part time, it may not be necessary to generate maximum income from your investments. If you take income unnecessarily, it could have a detrimental effect. What’s more, many people will have an assortment of different pension schemes having worked for different employers, while many will have also made the most of their Pep, Tessa and Isa tax allowances over the years. They need to turn this nonpension money into an income stream that might be needed for another 30 to 40 years. There are also tax implications to consider, be it capital gains, inheritance tax or income tax liabilities. Many people assume that once they have hung up their working boots they will never have to pay tax again.
This isn’t the case – tax still has to be paid. Investors need to ensure they are using all their available tax-free allowances and ensuring they are paying as little tax as they need. After all your work hard, paying your taxes all your life, you don’t want to be needlessly paying HMRC after you have retired. The traditional ways of planning for retirement are past their sell-by date. How lavish, comfortable or tough your retirement years will be is going to be down to you. You simply cannot afford to rely on the state or your employer any more - generous final salary schemes are fast disappearing. That’s why it is important to get planning early. There is nothing stopping you from getting a clear view of your current position by establishing what your likely state pension entitlement would be. It is also worth contacting the pension trustees of your current and previous employers, who will be able to provide pension forecasts, as will the companies managing any private pension plans. Examine whether you are on track or whether you may have to consider making extra contributions. Many companies that have replaced final salary schemes with defined contribution pension schemes contribute far less now, putting the onus on the employee to boost their pension pot. It is great to think that we have a higher chance of living longer, but it means that we have to make our money work harder while we can – and the sooner you start the better.

Health & Wellbeing
Managing Stress A lecturer, when explaining stress management to an audience, raised a glass of water and asked: ‘ How heavy is this glass of water?’ Answers called out ranged from 20g to 500g. The lecturer replied ‘The absolute weight doesn’t matter. It depends on how long you try to hold it. If I hold it for a minute, that’s not a problem. If I hold it for an hour, I will have an ache in my right arm. If I hold it for a day, you will have to call an ambulance. In each case, it is the same weight, but the longer I hold it, the heavier it becomes.” He continued ‘And that is the way with stress management. If we carry our burdens all the time, sooner or later, as the burden becomes increasingly heavy, we won’t be able to carry on. As with the glass of water, you have to put it down for a while and rest before holding it again. When we are refreshed, we can carry on with the burden. So, before you return home tonight, put the burden of work down. Don’t carry it home. You can pick it up tomorrow. Whatever burdens you are carrying now, let them down for a moment if you can. So, my friends, put down anything that may be a burden to you right now. Don’t pick it up again until after you have rested a while.’ Anon. Meet the Mayor: Cllr Paul Stone Think Kung Fu fighting, stuntman, children’s entertainer... what image have you got? I bet not many of you have this year’s Mayor of Chesterfield - Cllr Paul Stone in mind?
T
he mayoral chains were passed to Cllr Paul Stone in April, when he took up the role for the following 12 months. The honour of Mayor was bestowed to Paul based on his time served as a local councillor. Paul’s a break from tradition, he’s young for the role, at 44, his background is varied and his outlook somehow refreshing. Paul was born in Ashgate and lived in the Loundsley Green and Linacre Woods areas of Chesterfield during his childhood. In 1989 the family settled in New Whittington where he lived until moving to Barrow Hill in 2004. On inauguration the Mayor chooses a Mayoress,
Paul chose colleauge Mrs Barbara Wilson to support him in the role. Barbara, along with her husband, family and friends, started the Nenna Kind Cancer Support Centre in memory of their daughter Helen who died from cancer in January 2011. The Mayor’s year in office focuses around a chosen theme, and the theme Paul and Barbara have chosen is ‘facing challenges’. Paul explains “ I suffer from aspergers, a form of autism. People like me can find it harder to read the signals that most people take for granted. This means I may find it more difficult to communicate and interact with others which can lead to high levels of anxiety and confusion. I’m keen that in my year as Mayor I help give a voice to people who may feel marginalised, and help raise awareness for groups that perhaps get little or no attention. I would like to hear other people’s stories of challenges in their everyday lives and how they cope with change”.
Paul’s been self employed throughout his working life, teaching martial arts with classes at New Whittington, Staveley and Newbold. “I don’t teach professionally any more but do still practice locally, the time constraints associated with my duties as Mayor are going to mean normal activities will be put on hold for 12 months”. Paul has also worked as a variety entertainer, an Auguste Clown character working locally as a live entertainer. Paul commented “Since I’ve become Mayor people think I’m a rich man, their perception of me changes when I put on the chains, the fact that I’m a low earner comes as a huge surprise”. Paul comes from a political family, his uncle a councillor, his father, Cllr David Stone was mayor in 1995/6 and his mother, the late Cllr Freda Stone served as Mayoress. During his former years Paul’s family held office and he spent a lot of time on the phone taking calls and acting as the family PA, perhaps sewing the seeds of a political career... It wasn’t until his mother passed away that he decided to continue the family involvement in local politics. Cllr Paul Stone was elected as a Liberal Democratic member for New Whittington in 2001, this became Barrow Hill and New Whittington ward in 2003, but left the Liberal Democrats to serve as an independent council member in 2012. Activities away from politics really set Paul apart from contemporaries. Paul is skilled and highly qualified in martial arts and has trained as a stuntman, Paul explained “I remember in 1976 seeing a book with Japanese writing, I asked my father what it was, it was a Kung Fu book and the way in which my father described it stuck with me, it seemed magical and I was hooked.” Paul has studied many Martial Arts over the last 30 plus years including, Wado-Ryu (karate), Jujitsu (close combat for defeating an armed and armoured opponent using no weapon or a short weapon), Lau Gar (a form of Kung Fu), Wushu (modern exhibition and full-contact sport based on traditional Chinese martial arts), Wing Chun (a well defined martial art style practiced initially by Bruce Lee). “I have a black belt in Freestyle Kick Boxing” says Paul, “in my black belt fight my opponent had knocked out his previous opponent in 26 seconds, not a welcome prospect for the 18 year facing a grown man. However the fight went well and I came away with a black belt... and conscious!”
Paul is also working on combining all these techniques and hopes to develop his own system of martial arts. “It was whilst reading a martial arts magazine that a stuntman course caught my eye” says Paul, “I attended the course run by Stuntman Active Services, a gym opposite the Granada studios in Manchester. I’d wanted to do martial arts in movies, an extra, the sort of guy killed off in a Tarantino fight scene by Uma Thurman’s character Beatrix Kiddo - I’ve not realised this dream yet but I’m still hopeful I’ll get the opportunity”. But looking to the near future what are you looking forward to? “During the year ahead I will be doing my best to represent the borough in my ceremonial duties, I’m looking forward to it and with the support of my partner Sharon Buxton, and the Mayoress, it’s going to be fun I’m sure. Chesterfield is a great town, I love the people we’re a friendly town and I get the same comment from people who visit so it’s not just me who thinks so - it’s great to be able to represent our town.”

Article THE RISE AND FALL OF
TREENEUK, ASHGATE
Godfrey Holmes traces the history and changes of this local site
Treeneuk was distinctively built in the 1930s, on the left of, what was then, an insignificant road to the extreme West of bustling Chesterfield. Slack Lane, Ashgate is now a component of the Loundsley Green By-Pass taking traffic from Old and New Brampton, from Matlock and Baslow, to Sheffield. On this site, Mary Stewart, born 1844, spent some of the most fulfilling of her 80 years’ lifespan. In 1865, records show Mary married fellow-Scot John McKenzie of Paisley in Renfrewshire. Imagery ©2013 Google Map data ©2013 Google
Borough Councillor Ernest Bradbury Robinson also made this his home - Ernest was a prominent member and also Director of Robinson’s - manufacturers of everything from willow tobacco boxes to cardboard cartons and surgical dressings. Ernest Robinson’s full title was Mayor of Chesterfield, Conservative County Councillor, Lord High Sheriff of Derbyshire – the oldest secular office at Royal Command.
Treenuk today.
Of interest, the leafy suburbs of Yew Tree, Somersall, Walton, and Brookside boasted many other Robinson dwelling-houses... one of the foremost, Rye Flatt (now ignominiously demolished as well!) combining leisure and meeting facilities for retired employees of the firm. When the Robinsons vacated Treeneuk, William Gadsby, Managing Director of Pioneer Welding and Fabricating Ltd, moved in. He invented the process whereby solids can be separated, using liquids or pneumatic tables – or by using jigs in 1986. After Gadsby, David Smith, father of three, moved into Treeneuk. Smith owned Emblem Double Glazing, Sheepbridge, a once prosperous business venture employing 15. Unfortunately, his wife was homesick for Wingerworth, his business hit turbulence and he needed to sell Treeneuk in some haste. At that time the housing market was flattened by the national recession of 1990/91.
The Entrance Gate on Slack Lane.
Artists impression of the new development. Page 34 • www.s40local.co.uk
Thus an unusual Sale by Competition was devised. Conscientiously, Smith had 700,000 tickets printed, to be sold at 3000 local outlets, each ticket priced at £1. Each of the estimated 400,000 competitors who purchased “WIN A DREAM HOME” tickets had to answer three questions using skill. Fine: until... until...Chesterfield Library posted the answers up in their window... to save their staff time assisting countless punters! That simple posting transformed a glorified raffle into a lottery, certainly illegal under Sn. 14 of the Lotteries’ and Amusements’ Act of 1976. So, to avoid an unlimited fine and two years’ imprisonment, Treeneuk’s owner had to return the cash, every penny of it. And
at the same time could not repay his glazing creditors more hundreds and thousands of pounds. The Sheepbridge operation folded in October of 1992, after bailiffs had entered Treeneuk, that July, to repossess it for the bank. Treeneuk, amazingly, was promptly sold by Bothams for a new asking-price of £275,000. A little time later, a sandwich-board appeared on the pavement outside, advertising: Treeneuk Health & Beauty Relax, Replenish, Recuperate.
2012: Leeds-based housebuilder Duchy Homes has secured planning for the development of eight luxury homes in Chesterfield and construction is set to start in May. The Treeneuk Gardens development has been boosted by a funding deal provided by the Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) using the governmentbacked Funding for Lending Scheme (FLS). Treeneuk Gardens, which will be home to eight detached, five-bedroom houses, is situated off
Site plan for the new development.
Treeneuk is a beautiful country manor house set in approximately 2½ acres of grounds surrounded by tranquil woodland, listed as a nature reserve.
Slack Lane in Ashgate, Chesterfield, and the first completions are expected in December 2013 and final completion in spring 2014.
This unique tranquil setting is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Located to the west of Chesterfield Treeneuk is also conveniently located for access to the Peak District which is only a few minutes drive away. The M1 motorway is also convenient, with junction 29 approximately 25 minutes drive away.
Jim Cropper, Managing Director at Duchy Homes explains: “We are delighted to be investing in Chesterfield with the construction of eight executive houses and hope the addition of these homes will contribute positively to the local community. We are focused on delivering small developments of executive detached housing and are pleased to be contributing to the local economy by bringing new houses such as Treeneuk Garden to market. With this development and indeed with all our sites we are committed to ensuring it is constructed to fit in with the local surroundings and reflect the peaceful mature woodlands that Treeneuk Gardens is surrounded by and build the next stage in the history of this interesting site.”

Keep On Running The Spiral Scooter Club Far removed from the early days of the mod and rocker face-offs on the beaches of Brighton, the Chesterfield Spiral Scooter Club will more likely be found raising money for Ashgate Hospice, and on the 17 to 19 August will be hosting their tenth Watlerstock event at The Spital Pub, Spital Lane. Ian Guy who is a member of the club explained their background “Chesterfield’s Spiral Scooter Club was around in the 70s, but after splitting up, reformed in 2004 - originally meeting at the Devonshire in Hasland before taking up residence at the Spital Inn in 2009”. The Club’s members all share a passion for one of two things... a Lambretta or a Vespa - the Italian scooters made so popular by the mods or modernist movement of the 60s, plus a love of modern jazz, sharp Italian clothes and attention to style and appearance. Some of the club members were part of the original scene, many being part of the mod revival of the late 70’s and some members are the sons of original mods.

Kev organised the first two Watlerstock events to raise money for local charity organisations but sadly passed away in March 2006. Kev received care from Ashgate Hospice and so in Kev’s honour The Chesterfield Spiral Scooter Club have continued to hold the annual charity event raising much needed funds, in excess of £20,000 so far, for Ashgate Hospice. The bands at this year’s event include Hopper, an acoustic duo - followed by a DJ on the Friday night. Saturday’s line up sees Shindys, Division Street, Revolver and the Cycle Paths, alongside trade stands, food, an auction and music into the night from True Brit and more tunes from the DJ. Sunday kicks off at 11am with bacon butties at the Spital followed by a ride out at midday, firstly to CMC at Clay Cross for the best scooter trophy, leaving CMC approx. 1:30pm and then to the Olde House Pub, Newbold, leaving there at around 2:15pm and onto Ashgate Hospice to

and the Isle of White and generally get involved in all things scooter related” says Ian. It’s a world full of weird coincidences - as I write this article, playing on 6Music is Madness by Prince Buster... regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of ska and the tune from which Madness took their name. For details please see www.spiralscooterclub.wix. com or if you simply want to support the cause you can donate at Justgiving www.justgiving.com/teams/ SpiralSC
They’re hoping the event will add more much needed funds to the over £20,000 already raised for Ashgate Hospice, through events over the last 10 years. “The club meet Thursday nights at the Spital Inn, take part in ride outs during the summer, attend national rallies including events in Scotland

Garden Tips
July
10 things to do in the garden By Colin Harrison of Transition Chesterfield There’s quite a lot to do in the garden around now, but pottering around it in summer is one of the rewards for the effort put in over the rest of the year - don’t look on it as work but as relaxation.
As well as routine things like mowing the grass and weeding, here are ten other things that may be necessary (depending on what you grow).
1. Deadhead roses, repeat flowering perennials and bedding plants; check the staking of taller ones so they don’t topple over. 2. Keep watering all plants in containers (indoor and outdoor), and feed them regularly. Tomatoes in grow-bags are especially prone to problems if watered erratically, so try to have a routine for them, aiming to keep the soil moist but not wet. Lots of houseplants will appreciate a spell outside, tucked into a shady (but not too dry) spot. Remember to water and feed them, even if it rains, which is quite a treat for most of them, as it cleans the leaves very effectively. 3. Prune spring flowering shrubs so they don’t get leggy; birds should have finished nesting, so you can trim hedges without disturbing them. 4. If you have to water, do so in the evening when there will be less evaporation and the water has a chance to soak into the soil. Using a hose is more efficient as the water can be directed where it is needed; giving the ground a good soaking once a week is better than a less thorough one every day, which encourages roots to form near the surface. This can make plants more susceptible to future dry spells and damage when hoeing or digging nearby. Using a sprinkler will leave drops of water on foliage - this can cause spots on them, for a variety of reasons. 5. Clear ponds of algae, duck weed and other invasive species.
6. Check for signs of disease on plants prone to them, i.e. blight on tomatoes, clematis wilt and apple scab, and treat accordingly. 7. If poor weather persists, courgettes may need hand-pollinating – and check them regularly to make sure they don’t turn into marrows, although you can leave one or two to do so if you like. 8. While sitting relaxing in the sun, start planning for next year’s spring bulbs, so you can order them early. 9. If fences or garden furniture need painting or treatment with a preservative, try to do it in the middle of a dry spell. 10. A lot of vegetables should be maturing about now; keep an eye on them all, as the unreliable weather may cause some to bolt (i.e. form flowers and seeds); these should be picked before this happens, as they’ll usually be useless after it happens anyway.

Brampton Manor’s Charity Challenge for Ashgate Hospice By the time this edition is delivered, the Tour de France will have completed 9 stages and the riders will be looking forward to a rest day. A rest day is something Keiron Salt, Craig Lynch and John Kinirons (pictured below left to right) will be looking forward to after they’ve ridden up Mount Ventoux not once... but twice in 24 hours.
it. We’re going up it again the next day! Its 42km of climbing with 3100m of vertical ascent and it’ll be warm.”
“This year my charity challenge will revolve around the Tour de France. Myself and two fellow club Members from Brampton Manor will aim to cycle up Mount Ventoux – the notorious ‘Giant of Provence’ – twice in 24 hours!” explains Craig.
If you’d like to sponsor the Ventoux x2 challenge you can either call into Brampton Manor reception or visit www.justgiving.com/ventouxtimes2
“Those of you who know of this famous mountain (where British cyclist Tony Simpson sadly died trying to race up it in 1969) will be aware that the Tour professionals have to have a rest day after they go up
Page 46 • www.s40local.co.uk
The challenge takes place on 15th and 16th July, the week after the Annual Hogroast Music Festival which this year features the Rolling Stones who appear the day after they play Hyde Park! This event is also in aid of Ashgate Hospice.
Sounds like a fantastic, and rather tiring, way to raise money for Ashgate Hospice, I wish Craig and the guys a safe and enjoyable ride... my tip just repeat the nursery rhyme baa baa black sheep to yourself repeatedly whilst climbing, it takes your mind off things!

WE WON! BIG Cookathon With Old Hall Junior School
We won! Old Hall Junior School has won the National Cookathon Prize 2013. The Cookathon, which is run by the Children’s Food Trust, was held in March and Old Hall has won the prize for getting the most people in the local community cooking on the same day.
I Adults left to right – Pete Tomson (chef at CSC from Chartered House Catering), Stella Mitchell (Parent Helper), Sam Pasingham (Community Governor), Annie Branson from Blu Coffee Shop & Bistro, Rebecca Popple from Children’s Food Trust. Children left to right: School Nutritional Action Group members: Laurie G, Michael F, Harvey W, Maisy E, Amelia M-S, Abbie R-E and Charlie C.
n total an amazing 601 people in Brampton and beyond cooked a delicious curry on Thurs 7th March 2013. The school will now receive £500 to continue cookery within the school. The aim of the Cookathon is to promote healthy, home-cooked food. The children at Old Hall all made a naan bread at school to take home and eat with their curry as well as making a spice packet to add to the curry. Many parents, grandparents and friends joined in the competition. In addition, local businesses also helped out to bump up the numbers. These included CSC Manor Offices on Old Road where the canteen chef, Pete Tomson from Chartered House Catering made the curry for employees to eat at lunchtime and Blu Coffee Shop & Bistro on Chatsworth Road ensured that the curry was available on the menu for their customers. Other businesses that joined in were Loaf, the bakery in Crich, Moss Valley Fine Meats and Kir Kaz Indian Restaurant in Sheffield.
Wanted: JUDGES
for Chesterfield’s brand new Food and Drink Awards Do you have a passion for food? Then it might just be that Destination Chesterfield have the job for you... or two of you. The town’s marketing campaign, Destination Chesterfield, is in search of two people to join its panel of judges and search out our finest eateries and locally-produced food. The town’s very own Food and Drink Awards launch later this year and are designed to uncover our gourmet gems. The judges will be required to visit the nominated food outlets and rate them according to a set criterion. Destination Chesterfield Manager Dominic Stevens (pictured below) commented: “Whether it’s a sandwich, a takeaway or a three course gourmet meal, Chesterfield’s food outlets offer something to suit all tastes and we want to find and recognise the best. To do this, we need a strong judging panel so we’re reaching out to all food lovers and inviting them to join us.”
Children also promoted the Cookathon at the Brampton Food Market at the St Thomas’ Centre by handing out spice packets and naan bread. The whole school community worked together to achieve this fantastic award and we would like to thank all our parents, grandparents, friends, local businesses and community for supporting us. Special thanks go to Stella Mitchell, who is a parent at the school, for her hard work in organising the event.

Woddle oo teep a dop? Gloob a woddle a hop! Google ‘Bill & Ben’ and it might make more sense.
Although it’s difficult to believe, as we travel along the changing face of Chatsworth Road today, Brampton and the Pottery industry once went together like the horses and carts that originally transported their products.
I
n the nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century the pottery industry in Brampton flourished and there were ten potteries within easy walking distance of Old Road. The potteries were a major employer. One such was the Briddon/Barker Pottery which was founded around 1800 by Samuel & Henry Briddon. Mr. Barker was the owner of the land where the pottery was sited, hence the road name, Barker Lane. After the death of Samuel Briddon in 1860 the business was continued by his son Henry until his death in 1881. In 1920 they claimed to be the most up to date pottery in Derbyshire. Competition from metal, glass and plastic kitchenware forced closure in 1957.
Brampton Potteries Festival 13 to 14 July Gospel Mission Church Old Road Residents Old Hall School JMJ Pottery Clare Gage (Created Gallery) The Flower Pot
Walton Pottery, Brampton was begun by another member of the Briddon family, William. He began the pottery in 1872, and the Briddon family remained there until 1892. They were presumably related to the Briddons at the Barker Pottery. The firm was taken over by the Plowright brothers, who had an adjacent factory and finally closed in 1955. The Oldfield Pottery, begun by Thomas Oldfield was opened in 1810 where Morrison’s supermarket is now situated on Chatsworth Road; there is evidence of a pottery on that site as far back as 1784. The firm was Oldfield & Company from 1826. It was taken over by James Pearson in 1884 and two years after he died in 1905 the firm, became James Pearson Ltd. Pearson Pottery itself continued until 1994 when it was the last pottery in the Chesterfield area to close. Many other potteries were dotted around the area and The Alma Pottery, Beehive Pottery and Wheatbridge Pottery were all close by. Today no potteries remain but their memories live on and there are certainly people still alive who worked in them. Today, there are at least two potters still continuing the Brampton tradition: Janine Mannion-Jones (JMJ Pottery) and Clare Gage at Created Gallery whose studio is on Chatsworth Road. To celebrate this rich heritage, the idea of a Brampton Potteries Festival was introduced in 2008 by The Gospel Mission Church – a small Congregational church hidden away up a yard next to Serpent Motors on Old Road. This was supported wonderfully well by local residents who have created inventive and amusing displays in their gardens (rather like a scarecrow festival but with pots!). Each year the Festival has a different theme - for 2013 it is Fairy Tales - and hundreds come to Old Road to enjoy the Festival and to learn a little about this era of Brampton history. This year’s Festival is on July 13/14th and will include Old Hall Junior School for the first time and several local businesses including JMJ Pottery, Created Gallery and The Flower Pot. The Festival will be opened by The Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield and the event will show once again that history is not all ‘horrible’.

Will’s Blog
I
NOTE: This was written for the June edition but was postponed so please enjoy, even if we do know the results.
’m not sure that has got the for talent... ’ll be the first to admit that I was not blessed with a specific talent. I cannot sing, I am dreadful at playing an instrument and I have no natural ability to dance. I am however mildly talented in remembering such things as the contents of cupboards (without looking), how long an egg takes to boil (so it’s perfectly soft in the middle) and I chop vegetables at an alarming pace. I am fairly sure that I am not unique with my talentless blessings either; I am convinced that there are only a limited number of people who have natural ability to perform a talent filled act. I take my hat off to those individuals who can juggle with knives, shock people with impressive card tricks or who can fit inside small objects whilst singing the national anthem. So is this the reason that Britain is hooked on the search for the next talent to perform in front of the Queen? Is it this reason that we the people of Britain are desperate to find another Susan Boyle? Or is it because Saturday night television has deteriorated so badly that this is the only thing worth of watching? Gone are the days when we were spoiled with the likes of Baywatch, Beadles About and Blind Date. Lost in the past are delights such as Play Your Cards Right, Casualty and Dynasty. Today we can do nothing but our best to avoid watching a panel of half-wits supported by a ‘live studio audience’ assess whether some poor individual has any talent or not. And where do these, so called, contenders come from? Why doesn’t anybody feel the need to inform these crazy people that they have no talent, especially prior to making a complete idiot of themselves on national television? Furthermore, the worst ones often bring an entourage of family and friends with them to witness the public humiliation that they are inevitably going to endure. I can never work out why their family and friends don’t tell the poor disillusioned individuals that they possess no talent at all, I mean, who would do that to their nearest and dearest? If I ever managed to convince myself that I could ride a unicycle round a stage blindfolded whilst attempting ventriloquism with my hand up a puppet’s backside, I would personally like to think that someone (not everyone) might just do me the honour of taking me to one side and subtly telling me that (a) I don’t possess natural ability to do such a thing and (b) although talented, it wouldn’t actually be that entertaining. So the alternatives are grim I am afraid. You can forfeit the opportunity to witness forty strong, street dancing ‘troupes’. You could miss out on comedians who really shouldn’t be comedians and you could restrain from witnessing the horror of a pensioner attempting acrobatics… and try another channel. I must warn you though, that by changing channels, you do run the risk of stumbling across another alarmingly awful talent show. This one probably involves some seriously appalling ex-singers who see fit to judge other people who are in no position to sing (in this lifetime or the next) in the hope that they discover another chart sensation. The choice is yours. My only advice would be to give it all a miss and practice your juggling. In retrospect however, a blind folded cycling ventriloquist does sound good; I must remember to check the ads in the back of the S40 to see if anyone is selling a unicycle… Thanks for reading, Will www.wj79.wordpress.com
