Intro Hi All

What a summer it’s been so far - fantastic weather and epic sporting moments! Of course the highlight for me has been the second British Tour De France in Chris Froome, but there has been something for everyone!

I’m hoping you’ve not been too busy to put pen to paper and enter the S40 Local Writing Competition; some fabulous prizes to be won for four different age groups, from Nonsolovino, Toad, Pooky and Pooky Active - get all the info on page 20 (or last month’s edition).

This is the August Edition, the last before our summer break, the next will be the Autumn edition in about six weeks, just in time to give you a full run-down of the Chatsworth Road Festival Events. If you missed the deadline for getting your events published in The Guide, but you still want to do something, if you let me know there’s still plenty of time to get it in the S40 Local Chatsworth Road Festival Guide.

This month there’s an article about an inspirational guy who’s lost a third of his body weight thanks to some, frankly, amazing determination and the services of Seb Walker from SWR Fitness.

We’ve returned to the markets to find out more about the redevelopment of the market hall, we’ve the low down on the latest Brampton Brewery pub and I’ve been given a Honda Civic

by Gilders, not to keep, but to put through its paces and bring you the first S40 Local car review!

The Brunswick Inn Brampton Breweries Latest Premises Five years ago the rebirth of Brampton Brewery was but a twinkle in the eyes of five men - an idea to bring back what was once a successful local brand, with an association with Brampton’s past industrial heritage.

T

oday it is yet again a growing business: a recent expansion on the actual brewery site to meet the increased demand for their cask ales, the revival of two Brampton pubs and more recently a new pub... The Brunswick Inn, one of Derby’s most iconic pubs.

I met up with Chris Radford and Jon Leeming from Brampton Brewery to find out why and how the Brunswick has become part of their portfolio.

The Brunswick Inn has been a successful pub having operated non-stop with only two landlords in the last 27 years - the most recent landlord retired in March this year leaving the pub needing a new team. Everards, who also own the bricks and mortar at the Rose

railways” explains Chris, “The Midland Railway’s headquarters was in Derby and they developed the first purpose-built railway community in the country - this included cottages for their railway workers, the Brunswick pub and a terrace of shops. In the 70s bulldozers threatened and it was due for demolition. A campaign run by Derby’s Historic Building Society successfully gained recognition for the importance of the area, so we can be thankful to them that it’s still standing today... although taking on a protected building does present some issues.”

I wondered how the locals at the Brunswick felt about a Chesterfield based brewery taking on the pub, but as I haven’t had chance to visit (it’s on my to do list) I had to rely on Chris’ view “ The Brunswick’s in Derby and we’re a Derbyshire company, so it feels right, and the locals have been really receptive. We’ve a lot to live up to as the last landlord had been on site so long, however we don’t plan to change much other than the sign above the door and the ales available from the sixteen hand pumps” explains Chris. “One local asked when they could expect

The Brunswick Inn already has its own micro brewery on site selling Brunswick Beers and will continue to sell these cask ales in the pub, alongside the Brampton Beers, but the brewery business will be run as a completely independent business.

“Greg Clark, previously at The Market in town, has been running the pub since April and the first three months have been good, feedback is positive and people like the new menus which feature Chesterfield sourced produce. We’re looking forward to the summer.

So why are real ale pubs doing so well? “This sector is doing really well due to a number of factors. Many drinkers are returning to, or enjoying locally produced cask ales as opposed to multi national keg offerings. They are perhaps a more mature group and want a comfortable environment in which to enjoy their pint, no karaoke or sports screens etc” says Chris.

“What surprised us when we opened the Rose and Crown was how much wine we were selling.

Groups of women meeting up and buying a bottle, it was something we hadn’t expected, but we’ve since built on it by sourcing Brampton wines.”

“We’ve also seen tremendous local support for Brampton brewery, many people seem to prefer to buy a beer that’s brewed locally, to see the profits being fed back into the local community through wages and then spent in the shops in the area. Through the Brewery we’re also sourcing locally wherever we can - the pumps in the pubs used to travel the length of the country

for repair, but we’ve found Applied Pumps in Sheepbridge and we’re getting excellent service from them and can go and talk to them if we need to - the same goes for the music system for The Brunswick, which we purchased from Audioscene on Chatsworth Road, another local business”.

Brampton Brewery is a working example of the positive domino effect on the local economy of supporting and spending your money with a local business, money staying in the community.

I’m looking forward to a trip over to sample the latest Brampton Brewery offering, perhaps this might be something we should all do... “but please don’t all come on the same night” adds Chris!

Last month we talked to Chesterfield Borough Council (CBC) about the Market, this month I can bring you bang up to date with developments on the Market Hall.

F

ollowing our market’s feature last month we’ve been back to find out more about the redevelopment of the market hall.

S40 Local first shared artist impressions of the £4m renovation of the Market Hall in August 2011 - now some two years down the road, we’re fast approaching the grand opening.

The project is progressing well and during a recent Chesterfield Champions Inspired Investment briefing I saw for myself the scale of the changes. You can see from the pictures the increase in light now the scaffold has been removed, the view of the clock tower from inside is spectacular.

Matt Sorby, Keir’s Head of Contract for Chesterfield Borough Council (CBC) explained “The venture will provide 45 external and internal retail units on the ground floor together with a new cafe/coffee shop. On the first floor will be 22 new offices available for lease to local businesses, complete with meeting and conference facilities in the refurbished Assembly Room and the offices will also be the new home for the Markets team at CBC.” “There’s been a lot in the local press about the cost of the project” says Matt, “What has been lost is that ‘doing nothing’ would still have had a £1.5M price tag. And this would only have paid for essential maintenance and to keep the building as it was. The new design allows multiuse of the building and gives the market, which is so important to the town as a shopping destination and tourist attraction, a new contemporary centrepiece - and the market hall a new lease of life.

“The redevelopment has a very solid business case - £1.82M was sourced from the European Regional Development Fund and the lottery funded Town Heritage Institute awarded £300k.

Town Heritage Institute funding is awarded to projects that bring the heritage of a building back to life, locally it’s supported a number of schemes including The Winding Wheel, the new facade at Ashoka, improvements at the Museum and others throughout the borough.

“The CBC cost has been covered by releasing poor yielding council properties and properties in need of repair. The case also considers that the new hall will cost less to run than the old inefficient building, and will generate additional revenues from the new mixed use spaces.”

The team has been committed to bringing existing traders back into the new Market Hall.

“The success of the market hall is dependant on the viability and vibrancy of the stalls, so all the traders have had to submit proposals and business cases. Many of the traders in the old Market Hall have never had to undertake a formal process and write a business case or proposal in the way CBC were looking for to secure the new units. To support the traders with the process the Incubation Street project was set up - a level of support they’ve perhaps not seen in the past” says Matt. “The Source (near Meadowhall) has helped the businesses with their proposals and local accountants Shorts, as Chesterfield Champions, have offered their time, at no cost, to check over the financial robustness of the cases.”

“We’ve had expressions of interest for running stalls from 25 businesses, leaving only three or four empty units when the Market Hall reopens.

All the existing traders have been offered space.

Some are changing the way they sell their products from their previous counter style to adapt to new walk in units. We’ve also had 18 expressions of interest just to run the new cafe... all these are local independent businesses and are exactly in line with the aspiration we have for the Market Hall.”

Today is the 24 July and the project is two thirds of the way through its timeline and is due to open October 2013.

“I can’t wait to see the doors open” says Matt, “it has been a difficult time for the traders moving out to the tent, so it will be great to see them back in the new space in ten weeks time.”

Next month I plan to talk to some of the stall holders about the project and see what they think of Chesterfield’s new centrepiece.

Brampton Potteries Festival 2013 Review

Fairy Tales came to Brampton on the weekend of the 13/14 July - in the form of the Brampton Potteries Festival. If we whetted your appetite with the preview article in the last edition, we’re back now to tell you how it went.

he event, opened by the Mayor Cllr. Paul Stone and the Mayoress Cllr. Barbara Wallace, hosted an array of characters including Goldilocks, The Three Little Pigs, The Wicked Witch from The Little Mermaid bathing outside Old Hall School, Beauty and the Beast hidden in the Gospel Mission Church, Jack shimmied up the beanstalk and somewhere lived Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The Mayor and Mayoress were treated to a tour of the displays by children from Old Hall School, starting with Mr & Mrs Drury’s Pinocchio at 49 Old Road.

Old Hall School’s involvement started earlier this year. Chris Townsend, from the Brampton Gospel Mission on Old Road, visited the school to discuss the Potteries Festival with the children during assembly. Chris, a past Deputy Headteacher, was delighted to attend his first assembly at a Junior School.

The Potteries Festival celebrates the history of the Brampton potteries and brings together residents and businesses along Old Road to create plant pot displays around an adopted theme. The theme for this year: ‘The World of Fairy Tales’.

The displays were concentrated in the area from the Old Road/ Chatsworth Road junction up to the junction of Old Road/Old Hall Road.

Around 15 residents took part, together with a number of local businesses. The Flower House allowed the Festival to use their window displays, Created Gallery’s Clare Gage and Janine Mannion Jones from JMJ Potteries provided displays of work in the church, T Potts helped publicise events, the Britannia Inn took part with their Gingerbread Man display and Reg Day at Serpent Motors supported.

Chris commented, “The support of the businesses was fantastic. I can’t express my thanks enough”.

Sunday saw the displays out all day - a service at the church was followed by a barbecue for all those involved. Both were well attended with a good number of new people in addition to the Church congregation.

This was the sixth Potteries Festival and it is hoped that next year it may expand and be even more successful. The Brampton Potteries covered a large area in their hey-day so it would be good to see a wider area involved in future years.

Honda Civic: 1.6i-DTEC ES

This month something happened that took me by surprise and it made me realise that all those years reading EVO magazine were not wasted. I was offered the chance to write my first official car review!

J

ohn Scotting (Manager at Gilder Honda, Chesterfield) called me to ask if I’d be interested in reviewing one of their cars. How could I refuse?

A chance to test a car and write an article like the ones so often read!

I will admit though that unlike EVO and certain other BBC TV shows, I can’t comment on lift off over-steer or pride myself on how long I can hold a drift for... but I can load the family in, fill it with gear and see if the Honda can hold its own up Slack Hill! A much more realistic test.

So firstly the car in question, a Honda Honda Civic 1.6i-DTEC. It’ll set you Page 32 • www.s40local.co.uk

back £20,780 in the ES trim of the model I was loaned, and offers an amazing 78.5mpg, a CO2 output of just 94g/km and sits in the £0 road tax range, so before I get behind the wheel I’ve already assumed I won’t have to worry about what mode to use the suspension in and how complicated launch control will be.

This is a family hatch in every sense of the word, designed to carry four or five people in relative comfort together with whatever luggage we need to carry with us and designed to crawl down Chatsworth Road at 5mph being as frugal as it can.

The Civic has been around in one guise or another since 1972, I once travelled to Aviemore in a 3rd generation Civic... three of us, three mountain bikes and all our gear - inside the car, as I seem to recall, it wasn’t a comfortable trip.

However the car is now into its ninth generation and it still remains true to that original design criteria.

Before this model the shape was

very angular, almost box like, the Type R being a favourite of the hot hatch brigade with an engine that hung onto its power until the very top of the rev range, a strong engine that today you’ll find powers such extreme cars as Ariel’s Atom.

But back to the car in question. I ran the car for a relatively short period, just 5 days during the holidays (and print week!) and the car was used to ferry the kids to whatever activity was planned in their hectic timetable of events.

I’ll cover drive, ride and equipment later but the first thing that struck me was 60.2 mpg after 120 miles. I might be a little heavy footed and the car chugged round Chesterfield for nearly all of its time with us but this was a very respectable figure, something our Seat Altea 2.0d could only dream of. As mentioned before, in testing, the Honda can hit 78.5mpg and with 120 horsepower and 221 pounds-feet of torque available, all

quite reasonable in the real world, and if you drive it carefully a full tank (11 gallons) will see in excess of 750 miles covered.

I’m no boy racer anymore but when on my own I do tend to get between corners as fast as the legal limit will allow. I was surprised by how nimble (0 to 62 mph in 10.5 seconds) this car was. Looking back, the 118.4bhp of this car was hot hatch power when I was young so I shouldn’t be surprised. It’s not all good news though the 1.6 engine feels like it lacks a little torque, you have to be careful in low revs and low gears before the short sharp power band of the diesel kicks in. This seemed especially true when having the ECO button engaged, a feature which reduces power to the engine and eeks a little more from each drop of fuel. And then there’s the idle stop function, a little scary at first, pull up to a set of traffic lights, knock it out of gear, release the clutch and clunk.

Peace and quiet as you sit with the

engine off, just touch the clutch and it starts immediately, no lag, no worries. One thing I do wonder is how long the starter motor will last? All this aside though, once you get used to it, you can hustle the little Honda along nicely and it’ll suit whatever driving mood you might be in. The ride is firm but not uncomfortable and the kids thought it felt faster than our car, perhaps helped by the fact that they can read the speed easily from the large digital speedo.

The dashboard wasn’t short of buttons to play with, cruise control, blue-tooth, dual zone air con... all becoming more and more standard these days. The display has a small computer type panel, the intelligent Multi Info Display, with an acronym of ‘i-MID’, must be trendy if it has an “i”. A few things did have me wondering as I drove away from the forecourt, why the strange blue lines at the side of display and how do I turn the radio off? Both these things

became clear over the next few days, the blue lines go green when/if you drive economically, uhm mainly blue for me then and the radio is turned off by the small green button above the radio! I didn’t really mess with the i-MID controls but I’m sure much fun can be had should you feel the need. Top awards for the reversing camera though, kids loved that, the way it distorts your nose if you get really close is fantastic, oh and it does help you park the car!

Interior comfort is good, seats do a good sporty job but it’s not the sort of car you can jump in and out of quickly, the side bolsters mean you have to open the door fully to hop in.

So it slows you down a bit, perhaps a good thing then, ensures that when you sit down to drive you think about taking it easy and going all ECO. about 6” and is almost the entire size of the boot and then there’s the “Magic seat flexibility system” (perhaps iSeat might have been catchier?), a neat trick that allows the rear seat bases to be lifted together or independently, great for transporting large loads, if you drop the front wheel out of your pushbike it’ll take two bikes easily with a full boot for luggage, great for two people going cycling... though you might need some covers in the winter to ensure you don’t trash the interior.

The car’s exterior has been around for a while now and this generation has been toned down slightly from the last, gone are the triangular exhausts and triangular door handles, the rear wing even looks a little less angular to me. The still striking shape complimented by the subdued 16” alloy wheels result in a car that looks modern and looks great against any industrial backdrop.

After my short period with the car I got to like it.

I don’t think I’ll ever achieve the MPG figures it’s capable of but, a quick calculation proves that the Honda would have cost £1,837 (fuel and road tax savings) less to cover the 27,000 miles we’ve done so far in our present diesel engined Seat.

That’s enough to pay the insurance each year at least and a bit of change!

Chatsworth Road Festival

Update T

he Chatsworth Road Festival draws ever nearer and we’ve seen a fantastic increase in the interest for the Festival.

We have over 50 confirmed events, some repeats of successful events from last year, new events and an increase in the number of events in the lead up... particularly the request for bunting making!

There are two group bunting making events, one organised by Tracy at the Image and Colour Emporium (Thu 15 and Fri 16 August - see following page for details) and one organised

by Mandy Quinn from Morrisons, who will be making bunting for Chatsworth Road shops.

Thanks to these ladies as well as Kath at Rutland House Curtain Design who has volunteered to make up bunting for the festival.

With all this bunting the festival will be much more visible this year and it’s great to see all those events confirmed. These will be included in the printed guide and in the next edition (Autumn) of S40 Local.

Morrisons: Bunting Workshop Mandy Quinn from Morrisons wrote to say “We’ve to booked a room at St Thomas church, on Wednesday 11 September for the making of the bunting. We’ll need volunteers to cut out, sew (bringing your own machines if possible) and then pin on to the binding ready to sew again. We need donations of fabrics (any style), clean, bright colours, black cotton thread and pins.

“Once we receive the fabrics, volunteers will be able to collect a template from the store to cut out flags in preparation for our making day.

“Anyone interested in supporting can email: mandyandkip@hotmail.co.uk or at the store, on 01246 211060.

“On the making day Morrisons will be supplying light refreshments at the church.

“In addition the store will be advertising the Chatsworth Road Festival by the use of posters in store and will be making tannoy announcements on the run up to all the events.”

Brampton Manor Oktoberfest Sat 12 & Sun 13 October Brampton Manor are staging the area’s first Oktoberfest as their contribution to this year’s Chatsworth Road Festival. The two day event will take place from noon each day on Saturday 12 and Sunday 13 October (free admission) with two distinct themes: Saturday - based on lager beers including several German brands.

Sunday - based on UK beers with the highlight at 2.30 pm when “The Battle of the Borough Bitters” takes place; judged by a wholly independent assessor. Visitors will have the chance to try all four beers and cast their vote with a draw for those that make the same choice as the judge.

Battle of the Borough Bitters will feature the four breweries in the borough: Brampton, Raw, Spire and Townes will have their bitter brew evaluated by an independent arbiter on the Sunday.

Paul Stone, will first visit each shop to meet the chefs, the taste challenge will then take place, early evening, on Friday 11 October at Brampton Brewery... pans are primed and forks at the ready for the first ever Chatsworth Road Chip Challenge. Local pride is at stake and the owners are keen to compete for the honour of “Chip Champions of Chatsworth Road”

The event is sure to be popular so put it in your diary; whatever your beer tastes this festival will cater for them. Plus there’s local pride at stake as the four borough breweries battle it out for the title of “Best Bitter in the Borough!”

ChipFest Challenge It’s not just our beers that are pitted against each other - the chip shops are at it too! We all have our favourite fish and chip shop and debate their merits. Opinion will continue to differ but Chatsworth Road Festival committee members Howard Borrell and Shirley Niblock thought it would be fun to instigate a local challenge.

Olly’s Life Changing Journey With Seb Walker from SRW Fitness

H

ow many of us make a New Year’s Resolution each year and then if they last until the end of the month we feel we’ve done well? Olly Jagus was just this sort of young man. “Every year I’d lose some weight and then a few weeks later it was forgotten about.” In 2013 though this was not to be the case and Olly has seen a massive change in his life.

Olly has always been a big lad, he loves his food but it took a life changing event before anything would change. In 2012 Olly’s mother took ill, he was just 16. Her recovery plan involved gym membership and the whole family joined to support her.

Unfortunately things took a turn for the worse and within six months Olly’s mother had sadly passed away.

Over the next two years Olly, who was 16 stone, put on an additional 4 stone and at the end of his sixth form had lost all his self-confidence. The unhealthy lifestyle was leading to unhappiness and being used as an excuse for decisions in his life.

“My grades were all good but I couldn’t face going away to college, I’d always wanted a career in architecture but took a one year art foundation course as I wasn’t prepared to move away from home, to attend University and socialise with a new group of people. I realised I needed to change before I could make any long term commitment” says Olly.

So Christmas 2012 came, Olly (now weighing in at 20st 1lb) polished off all the chocolates and went off to Brampton Manor on 1st January 2013 for his month long resolution exercise regime. By the start of the third week of January he’d lost about half a stone. He’d often got to this stage but never really progressed any further before dropping back to his old ways and hanging up the trainers.

“Seb has lead me to change my life direction entirely... with my new found confidence I’ve had an interview and will be starting a job locally.”

He wanted to continue and noticed Seb from SRW Fitness at Brampton Manor offering personal training services, he was too embaressed to ask, “I felt like I needed to lose weight before approaching Seb, crazy really, I took a grip of myself and had a chat with Seb. He was great, understood what I wanted to do, it was a great moment for me, I had made the decision and this really was the turning point” says Olly.

“Seb set out a three month plan for me, my Dad had no confidence in me and didn’t even set up the direct debit, thinking I’d stick a few weeks and then give up.”

It’s now seven months since that first chat and Olly is now an amazing 13st 5lb... that’s a 6st 10lb loss! 33.5% of his starting body weight!!

So how was the first session with Seb? “To be honest I was tired out just doing the stretches. The thing was I wasn’t worried about the exercise but it was more about not knowing what I was going to be doing. It reminded me of school, I was at Lady Manners and there’s a lot of focus on Rugby and Football. I would never have described myself as a sporty person but simply the thought of not knowing what to expect as I started PE at school left me so nervous I often took time off as a result.

“With Seb, the first sessions were hard mentally and physically but I felt great afterwards, a real sense of achievement.”

The approach by Seb wasn’t just exercise, it focused on diet and lifestyle, fitting classes in early morning before college. “Seb’s got me on the Paleo diet, often referred to as the caveman diet, this cuts out processed foods in exchange for eating lean meats, oily fish, vegetables, fruit, nuts and seeds to get the nutrients my body needs” says Olly.

As you’re such a food lover how did you get on with this? “It wasn’t easy I admit, I didn’t stick to it religiously until I was a week away from my first weigh in. I decided Please mention S40 Local • Page 45

that if I’m going to do this I need to take it seriously so I followed the diet 100%. In the first month I lost 4.3kg (9.5lb) but had put on 0.5kg of muscle. Following this success I started 100% on the plan and diet, it was great to be measured and see real results” explains Olly.

The programme Olly follows involved two 30 minute sessions a week with Seb plus two other sessions on his own. Since finishing college in June there is time to expand on these sessions, the target for Olly is 15% body fat but this needs to be accompanied with a gain in muscle. There isn’t simply an end figure, it’s about balance and wellbeing, Olly will know when he’s there from how he feels about himself.

Is it still hard work seven months in? “It is but it’s different now” Olly explains, “I’m working within a targeted range and I’m starting to understand what I’m capable of. Seb pushes me and takes me to my limits of exercise and then encourages me to hold it at this level. He’s never shouting in my face all boot camp style so you really want to achieve the results.”

I tell Olly how impressive I think what he’s achieved is and ask if he’s now ready for the architecture course next year. I’m very surprised by the answer. “No, not any more. I’ve enjoyed the journey with Seb so much and love the science part of it all that I want to help others like me. Unfortunately I’ve missed the boat for this year but I’m looking to start University doing a sports science degree in September 2014 and once complete I’ll be doing a Personal Training course.”

“Seb has lead me to change my life direction entirely and I’ve always struggled with confidence around new people, however with my new found confidence I’ve had an interview and will be starting a job locally. This will enable

me to earn a living until I start Uni and continue my training plan. I’m very excited about this, especially with the year to train. If I’ve achieved this in six months, what improvements can I look forward to in another 12 months?”

So with this change how have people reacted?

“Friends have seen the gradual change so it’s not been so dramatic, my grandma says I don’t walk around with hunched shoulders anymore and walk with confidence” answers Olly.

It’s all been such a positive interview that I have to drop back to reality for a bit, Olly has made progress in the past, will it stick this time?

What’s different, I ask: “I’m absolutely sticking with it” at this point Olly pulls out his old school trousers, 42” waist, he puts them up against him, now 32” is the usual size. “There’s no way I’m going back to those, as I said earlier life seemed to be on hold due to my weight and my lack of confidence, things are looking good ahead of me now. In the past if anything got me stressed or worried, I opened the cupboard and turned to food. Today, stress is worked through by a longer session in the gym.”

So what’s the relationship with Seb like, I ask, “He’s become a friend more than a trainer, always there for support”. So would you recommend him? “Absolutely, my sister is thinking about signing up with Seb”.

Have I missed anything Olly? “No I don’t think so, I don’t want to lose the relationship with fitness and want to encourage others to do it. If you look at my measurements I’ve lost 167cm, that’s only a few cm off my total height, and I’m thinking now about a personal challenge, a skydive perhaps, or a mud challenge type run... strange I think I’d have been sick at the thought of it six months ago.”

I chat to Shane Calton from Palace Roofline.

alace Roofline became a limited company in 2008 and you may have seen their new showroom and office at 414 Chatsworth Road - on the stretch of road near Created Gallery. Specialising in soffits and fascias Shane takes great pride in what he does.

“It’s the little things that make all the difference, but that often goes unseen” he explains, “for instance we fix all our gutter brackets at 500mm centres and not 800mm, as many people do.

And it might sound daft but we fix each with two screws, as they should be fixed. That attention to detail probably means we use a few more brackets and screws doing the job, but if we have 17 inches of snow I’m not sending my team

“The last thing I want is take the shine off any job by revisiting, at the end of the day if you’ve had your guttering replaced because of leaking joints at the end of the job I want to make sure it doesn’t still leak!”

Shane’s fitters have all been with him for a number of years and understand his eye for detail and, they too, take pride in what they do.

10 things to do in the garden

1. There should be lots of fruit and veg to harvest now – make sure things like beans don’t set seed, as they will then stop producing more pods. If you’re going away, try and arrange for a friend or neighbour (or possibly someone who is both!) to harvest while you’re away.

2. The same is true for ornamental plants – once they set seed, most stop producing flowers, so keep dead-heading. If that’s a bit much to ask of your stand-in gardening friend/neighbour, cut off all but the smallest buds before going away, which should prevent them reaching the seed stage before your return. Some seed heads are quite decorative, especially grasses, so leave them, and some plants grow true to type from seed, so it may be useful to collect seeds from these for propagation or swapping.

3. If you want to allow some courgettes to turn into marrows, lift them off the ground to stop them rotting underneath.

4. Once the fruit has been picked from raspberry canes, cut them out. If you have autumn fruiting varieties, remove any weak canes now.

5. Keep up regular watering of pot plants (adding a liquid feed to the water as needed), no matter how much it rains. If you’re going away, move them into the shade, soak well and apply a mulch to reduce water loss.

6. You can still plant salad crops to harvest in a month or so. Oriental plants such as pak choi are reliable for sowing at this time of year.

7. If you’ve got empty patches of soil where you’ve finished harvesting what was there, consider sowing a green manure; this will cover the ground and is then dug in to improve its fertility (don’t let it set seed).

8. If you want to sow a new lawn, start the preparation now. The ground needs to be dug and left for at least a month to settle before either sowing seed into it, or having turf laid. It will also give you a chance to make sure all perennial weeds have been removed.

9. Detach and pot up runners from strawberries, or sink pots into the ground nearby and pin the runners into them until rooted.

10. As always, remember the garden is for relaxation and fun; if you’re not a professional, do the jobs when you feel like it – most plants are fairly tolerant anyway, and can’t read calendars…

Community News COMING SOON IN THE S40 AREA Brampton & Walton Townswomen

T

ownswomen have branches all over the UK, offering a meeting place for women, an opportunity to make new friends – and meet old ones – to learn a new skill or indulge in a long-held interest. We’re a mixed bunch with a wide variety of interests and each branch has its own groups to cater for members’ hobbies and pursuits.

We are outward-looking in that we campaign for change. Over the years we’ve been active in urging the government to improve the life of women and men both in this country and abroad.

From actively opposing the closure of rural post offices to questioning the plight of women in Afghanistan, through Fathers’ Rights, domestic violence and care for the elderly in hospitals.

Townswomen have discussed, campaigned and, more often than not, won through.

One of the UK’s largest women’s organisations, Townswomen are well represented in Chesterfield and District, where we already have twelve branches and are expanding.

As from 18 September a new Brampton and Walton branch will be meeting in St Thomas’ Centre, at the rear of St Thomas’ Church, Chatsworth Road, S40 3AW. Brampton Brewery FC The Season Kicks Off

40 Local will continue to follow Brampton Brewery FC again in the new season, which starts in September.

In May, the BBFC lads gained promotion to Division 7 by being runners up to Newbold Sports.

For the 2nd year running, Brampton lad, Liam Roberts was top scorer, netting 27 goals.

According to Manager Dan Nowak, “The target this season is back-to-back promotion. We already had a very strong squad but, with the addition of three new players I’m confident more silverware will be heading our way next May.” The 1st pre-season friendly resulted in a disappointing 1 nil defeat to Division 7 newcomers All Inn Athletic.

The following week however, BBFC found their form in a 9 nil victory over Spartans 2nd. Scorers were Dom Verissimo x3, Liam Roberts x 2, with Harden, Sales, Howells and Cocking all bagging 1 a piece.

New signing Verissimo had an eventful day.

After being a hat-trick hero in the 1st half, he was brought down early in the 2nd, resulting in a broken collar bone and painful trip to A & E. The following Sunday, a 4 nil victory was recorded against old rivals Holmehall 2nd. On the score sheet for the 2nd week running were Roberts, Howells, and Cocking, with manager Nowak also finding the back of the net.

NEDIAS: North East Derbyshire Industrial Archeological Society Journal Volume 5.

C

oking at WIngerworth is the major theme of newly published NEDIAS Journal Vol.5 is the history and function of, what is said to have been, the largest coal coking plant ever built in Europe – The Avenue Plant at Wingerworth.

The site extended over 240 acres, took 760 people to build, and employed approx. 800 people.

Early in his career, David Jenkins was a Cost Research Officer in the National Coal Boards HQ Finance Dept. When he heard NEDIAS was about to publish a selection of photographs recording the construction of the Avenue Plant, he readily agreed to write an article, since he had been involved in monitoring expenditure from ‘the turning of the first sod’ to commissioning.

To complement the coal coking theme Derek Grindell has summarised the 1927 Adshead Report, which reviewed the prospects for the mining industry within North East Derbyshire.

In addition the paper by Richard Patilla relates the history of one of the area’s cotton mills, the Amber Mill, located within the parish of Shirland.

With the establishment of the Derwent Valley World Heritage Site a decade ago. The story of Amber Mill, just a few miles outside the valley has been somewhat neglected and forgotten, and it is most welcome that this current paper highlights its considerable importance within the area in the early 1800s.

What’s in one’s name?

A

t the time of writing this blog the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were a few days into enjoying the arrival of their new baby boy, the third in line to the throne. They have not, as yet, released the baby’s name. Apparently Prince William did mention, responding from a question from reporters, that him and his devilishly attractive wife, the Duchess of Cambridge, had not yet decided on a name for the little mite. So, because I think I could manage such a responsibility and as I am also called William, I have decided to assume the role of naming the Royal baby.

The bookies are offering good odds on George, James, Arthur, Louis and Alexander which are all very good traditional names and have their own place in the names of historical monarchs but I thought that what Wills and Kate needed was something a bit different. Obviously when considering names for a possible future king, you need to be able to establish some ground rules: The name needs to sound good when prefixed with ‘King’ so you can exclude King Craig instantly; too many ‘Kers’ and ‘Cees’ in one go. You can also exclude King Kong and King Canute too; primarily for the same reason but secondly because it’s been done before. Besides, one was a big ape with a penchant for sky scrapers and the other was Danish and therefore associated with pastry and bacon.

You want to consider something that is going to draw from a bit of historical Royal influence too, so I guess that excludes any chance of Nigel, Graeme, Gordon or Shaun. And without wanting to cause any offence, you can probably exclude any Dave’s, Steve’s and Lee’s; the Queen probably wouldn’t consider those names posh enough. Besides, the Royal baby is likely to be King at some point and not a plumber, mechanic or electrician... not wanting to steroptype!

You couldn’t really go ‘out there’ with a name either; any chance of replicating such astounding naming successes as other famous ‘baby namers’ such as Mariah Carey, Kanye West and Jamie Oliver who bizarrely decided on hilarious names like ‘Moroccan’, ‘North West’ and ‘Buddy Bear’. Although having said that I do like the sound of ‘King Buddy Bear’; it almost has a children’s story character essence about it; Jungle Bookesque even; mind you, because of that reason alone, it isn’t fit for the Royal Audience, so that’s no good either!

You could always consider famous movie characters and sports personalities. Despite the temptation, even I don’t have enough devilment in me to offer up the likes of Arnold (Terminator), Maximus (Gladiator), Bradley (Wiggins) or Gazza. There’s always King Wayne (Rooney)?

Mmm, maybe not this time …

So as it transpires, picking a name for the Royal baby isn’t as easy as I first thought. No wonder the Cambridge’s are still undecided! Maybe I should stick to involving myself in the production of hundreds of tons of ‘baby Cambridge’ t-shirts, ‘Keep Calm there’s a Royal baby’ mugs and whatever other Royal baby related rammel that is currently flooding the market instead!

The bottom line is; it is going to be something boring, traditional and Royal-esq. My money is on George Philip Spencer Alfred Cambridge. Admittedly it is better than (but not as cool) as Buddy Bear JeanClaude Will.I.Am South East Cambridge though, although I wonder what odds Ladbrokes are offering on the latter? Only time will tell…
