no. 49 December 2013
Intro Hello and welcome to the last S40 Local of 2013!
Firstly apologies for the grammar on the Britannia article last month! They won ‘overall’ and ‘gilt’ awards and not ‘overhaul’ and ‘guild’... oh well I’m only human and the fact that people pointed them out means you’re reading S40 Local in detail... so thanks for pointing it out Pat! There were so many things I wanted to get done in this edition but it’s just been crazy busy so they’ve nearly all been postponed to the Winter edition... you’ll just have to wait. I’ve spent a lot of time talking to people about their businesses this month and I’m getting a mixed message. The government tells us we’re on the way to recovery and I’m getting a similar message from some of you. The trades seem to be particularly busy but it’s as important as ever to support the local independent guys and use them for as much of your Christmas shopping as you can. There are loads of independent options and we’ve highlighted a number of these in the second part of the gift guide. One of my wife’s recent finds for this year was some fantastic cushions she spotted in Select Interiors, they were reasonably priced, around £35 to £40 and gorgeous, I’m told! You just never know what you might find locally and the independents will be a lot more thankful to you than the national companies – so lets all aim for at least 10% local with our Christmas shopping. A huge thank you to Hannah Wheeler for the fabulous illustration on this month’s cover, Hannah has been working with me on S40 Local now for three months and has rapidly become invaluable to the process. S40 Local are featuring a tree at the St Thomas’ Christmas Tree Festival, so please pop along and take a look, you’ll see plenty of names you recognise! In the run up to Christmas don’t forget to decorate the community Christmas tree between Somersall Park and Walton Dam; getting some fresh air and visiting the tree is our new Boxing Day tradition! All that remains is to wish you a very Happy Christmas and best wishes for New Year and 2014! I’m taking some time off over Christmas, so the next edition, Winter, will arrive on your doorsteps towards the end of January! Happy Holidays. Paul.

S40 The Final Round Up
Also held on the final day of the festival, the Friends of the Inkerman held the birdbox building workshop. Of the 40 kits available, 29 birdboxes were constructed.
Our local Police Community Support Officer, Christopher Milnes came along to build a box and help others to construct theirs.
F
ollowing last month’s round up of the Chatsworth Road Festival we received a few late news items that just missed the deadline for print.
I’ve collected them all together here and alongside Deirdre’s message would like to add my thanks to all those who put on events and to those of you who attended. It’s great to see people’s hard work rewarded by rooms full of people and I was amazed by the comments that kept coming back to me, booked up events, people discovering new places and others arranging their week around events.
S40
I made it along to one or two events and what impressed me the most was the collective knowledge we have along Chatsworth Road. Business owners that love what they do and are happy to share their experience. Make a note in your diaries for next year’s festival running from Saturday 4th to Sunday 12th October 2014 and keep an eye out for updates in S40 Local. And don’t forget, if you want to get involved next year there’s now plenty of time to plan your event!
WRITING COMPETITION
CHATSWORTH ROAD FESTIVAL QUIZ TRAIL 2013
Thank you to everyone who took part in the festival quiz trail and congratulations to the winners Mr and Mrs Umney.
A few months ago we launched our writing competition that ran in line with the Festival. The winning entry, ‘The Spire’ was penned by Adrienne Handley of Ashgate. I met up briefly with Adrienne for a chat and to hand over a framed copy of her poem at Nonsolvino where her and a friend were about to enjoy their meal, the winning prize for the competition. I was pleased to learn that Adrienne is as passionate about Chesterfield as I am and has returned to live here after working away. Thanks to Adrienne for entering and I hope she enjoyed her night.

GREAT
BIG THANK YOU
This isn’t one of my usual emails where I’m bossy and tell you what to do but just a GREAT BIG THANK YOU. This year’s Festival was a great success and we look forward to building on it next year. We have a little rest until mid January when we start the whole process again. If you would like to be more involved then you are most welcome. Send me a message on this address and I’ll get in touch. We’ve had good feedback from customers/residents/ businesses and community groups but we’d love to get more. If you have any suggestions for improvements then we’re listening - unless it’s about more bunting, in which case the answer is that we’re working on more for next year. If you definitely want to be involved in having an event next year then let me know - it helps with our planning to get an early idea of who is interested. Want to be involved but need help with ideas? I have a team who are brimming with ideas and I can put you in touch with an ideas person.

On the last day of the 2013 Chatsworth Road Festival, Brampton Manor hosted ‘The battle of the Borou gh Bitters’ . To ensure complete impartiality the event was judged by Andy Bennett, UK Business Manager of Palm Breweries (Belgium), based in Guildford. Andy tested the beers blind, with no idea which beer he was tasting, and made his choice based solely on personal preference. The four breweries in the borough each sent one beer to the competition Spire Brewery - “Brassed Off” Townes -“Staveley Cross” Raw - “JR Best Bitter ” Brampton - “1302” After much deliberation Andy made his choice and the winner of the title ‘Best Bitter in the Borough 2013’ was 1302 from Brampton Brewery. Congratulations to Brampton Brewery and huge thanks to Andy Bennett who made a special journey to Chesterfield on his birthday ! Chris Radford and xx from Brampton Brewery receive their winning title from Isobel Gibbions of Brampton Mano r.

131 Chatsworth Road

31, as we know it today, became a landmark on Chatsworth Road in 2009. Blue Deer were the developers behind the scheme and one of the early investors in Chatsworth Road’s renaissance. They saw the potential in the area and purchased the old petrol station which was demolished and is now home to eight businesses in the high class development.
Alongside 131, Blue Deer also opened The Hanger at 42 Chatsworth Road, the space occupied previously by Kingdom Pine. Blue Deer Ltd are based locally in Hathersage, owned by Tim Turner the developments on Chatsworth Road are about providing quality spaces for quality businesses, facilities that help drive forward the area’s renewal. 131 Chatsworth Road is now home to a wide range of prestigious tenants, including Nonnas, iDeal Carpets, Dragonfly Bespoke, Precious Bridal Rooms, The Look Salon, Blanc, Ultimate Bathrooms and Black Eyed Susan. If you were thinking of joining this unique group of successful independent businesses, a unit has recently become available and details can be obtained by contacting Fishwicks & Co.
Page 30 • www.s40local.co.uk
The two developments close to each other are amongst the first buildings you see as you drive from Chesterfield out to the Peak District along Chatsworth Road, an important arterial route, and help create an attractive prosperous gateway and over the last few years this area now looks and feels very different. Tim’s previously commented “The Hanger is our second development on Chatsworth Road and follows the success we have achieved at 131 Chatsworth Road. We are very pleased to have attracted a variety of quality tenants whose positive attitudes to make their businesses a success have really fuelled my appetite to build our latest development further along the road - signifying another important element of Chatsworth Road’s renaissance.” It has to be said that this renaissance continues apace, there are still brown field sites along Chatsworth Road and it can only be hoped that future schemes can be developed and funded to bring additional attractive solutions to these areas that continue to add to the appeal of Chatsworth Road.

arpets and flooring are the finishing touches that turn a house into a home, and at iDeal Carpets you can expect to find a full range to suit all your needs throughout the house. Kevin Howarth is the man behind iDeal Carpets, a Chesterfield guy through and through who started his working life at Robinsons and lives in Walton. He offers competitive prices and a real sense of what S40 Local is all about, independent from the major stores, approachable and part of the community. “Being independent I’m able to have more say in who supplies me, I select the suppliers I want. Today I offer flooring of all types from quality carpets, laminates, real and engineered woods, vinyls, luxury vinyl tiles, safety flooring, through to commercial solutions. “ says Kevin. “The commercial arena has been very successful for me recently, I’ve secured contracts to supply flooring to Barnet Hospital in north London, and for three schools in Peterborough. It’s good work but the distances make it hard, it would be great to pick up work of the same scale locally” says Kevin, “although I have supplied the new carpet in the Britannia Inn and the Salon at Brampton Manor. In the store there is a great selection and I can supply flooring for residential, rental refurbishments, new developments, not forgetting commercial work.” Over the last couple of years Kevin has helped raise money for Help for Heroes, in 2012 he got involved locally and sponsored the Chesterfield Arms Football team and he’s helped S40 Local’s Christmas Competition by donating towards the prize for the last two years and will be doing so again in next years New Year competition! Thank you Kevin. If you’re in the market for flooring be sure to pop down to iDeal Carpets for a chat with Kevin. Kevin Howarth iDeal Carpets

f you are looking for a top quality bathroom showroom then there is none better than the Ultimate Bathrooms showroom at 131 Chatsworth Road. Lesley looks after customer care and loves her job. “It’s a great place to work. 131 is a friendly environment, we all know each other and it’s like a small family. 131 is a great location, a group of high quality businesses that complement each other on an important arterial route so there is lots of passing trade, a great local catchment area and free parking outside. Ultimate Bathrooms’ in house designers are Paul Webster and Claire Moore, who between them have almost 50 year’s experience of putting together bathroom solutions using the latest 3D CAD computer systems. The company HQ and largest showroom is in Maltby, their showroom in Bakewell opened ten years ago and Chesterfield followed four years ago. Ultimate Bathrooms are wetroom experts and have a wealth of experience in installing tiled shower areas. By carefully selecting products from our vast range we can usually achieve something in budget. Whatever the job, the level of service, care and installation remains at the same high standard. If you are thinking about a new bathroom, call in to see us, I’m sure you will be pleased with what we can offer” adds Paul. Paul Webster Ultimate Bathrooms
blanc lamour, style, and high quality at reasonable prices is what blanc is all about. Anne- Marie White has been providing Chesterfield with fantastic fashions and a warm welcome that set them apart from the high street at 131 Chatsworth Road for the last two and a half years. Her ranges include UK and international designers, exclusive to the area, some of which you’ll know and some perhaps not? “In 2011 when I first opened Blanc I wanted to bring individuality and some of London’s glamour and style to this region. Whilst I accept that London will always lead the way in the fashion stakes there’s no reason why you need to live there to enjoy great labels. We have a range of international and domestic labels right here and some are exclusive to Blanc, for this area” explains Anne-Marie. Right now it’s a time of change as the Autumn and Winter ranges arrive in store and there is a wonderful selection of dresses perfect for the Christmas party season. Talking of Christmas, if you join the Blanc Club, you can create a ‘wish list’, a handy service that allows people to call in and pick a present, safe in the knowledge that it’s something wanted. They even offer a complimentary gift wrap too! If this isn’t for you then until 24th December (2013) you can enjoy 10% off the cost of gift vouchers. “With the closure of Co op earlier in the year in Chesterfield town centre a number of people might be pleased to know that we also stock Libra and Aria, both quality Irish brands are available right here, with parking outside!” explains Anne-Marie. Many people would be surprised at the range available at Blanc, it’s not all mother of the bride. “You can get a anything from a pair of fur lined wellies to jeans by ‘Amazing Woman’ to a stunning evening dress and I’m sure most people will be pleasantly surprised by our prices. In one local family, all three generations buy their clothes from us” says Anne-Marie. If you’ve never been into Blanc it’s never been a better time to take a look. Open Sundays and late night every Thursday leading up to Christmas. Blanc, always a good reason to visit. Anne-Marie White Blanc
lack Eyed Susan isn’t just about flower arrangements “we can provide bedding plants together with a design and planting service, have a range of gifts and products in store including silk flowers that look just like the real thing, a range of products such as bears (as seen in last month’s gift guide), vases, scented candles, decorations and loads more, and a recent addition is a hire service, providing a range of plants, containers, planters, displays and all the finishing touches for any wedding or event” outlines Kate. “In addition to all this we’re still a traditional florist, everything from births, weddings and funerals” explains Kate,”we have a quiet consultation room where we can sit and discuss any requirement with a sympathetic ear and in total privacy.” But right now it’s all about Christmas. Christmas is the most enjoyable time of the floral calendar” she continues, “it differs from Valentine’s for instance, Valentine’s is good business but people are so last minute. Christmas seems to be better planned and it feels more relaxed, it’s family time.” The weather can make things difficult, the snow of the past few years prevented them holding stock outside, it all has to come indoors so space gets tight. So what’s on people’s short list for Christmas? “Christmas bouquets; baskets for Mum, table decorations and centre pieces for Christmas day, wreaths for the front door, and we provide wreaths for cemeteries as people pay their respects to loved ones, no longer with us.” “Kate is the driving force behind the business which opened its doors at 131 on 1 May 2010, she has 20 year’s floristry experience. Tom is a third generation florist and Jo is relatively new, having studied floristry after the kids started school seven years ago. Caroline looks after the finances and Mac is the delivery driver. “Anyone who’s never stepped through the door should call in and see us” adds Kate, “we’re a friendly bunch and another one of the small community at 131.” Kate May Black Eyed Susan

New Business
Oaklams is a new town centre hairdressing salon on Glumangate, in the building previously occupied by Time womenswear clothing, and owned by Caroline Noakes and Phil Wakelam, the two names combined to form Oaklams. Caroline and Phil work alongside, Nathan Baker, Helen Ruane and Ryan Stockley, all previously from Tribes Salon. Caroline explained “Phil and I have been thinking about starting our own salon for some time, Tribes was never our own place and we wanted to create something different, a boutique salon with a fresh outlook. The time was right to branch out on our own and give it a try. We are delighted that Helen, Nathan and Ryan have come with us” The new environment is fresh and welcoming, the colour scheme is soothing, it’s a great place to relax whilst your hair is pampered. They opened up on 23rd September and are into their third month, “we’re so grateful to our customers and friends, who’ve stayed with through the transition and followed us to out great new home on Glumangate.” said Phil “We’ve sourced our hair products from Italy from a company called Davines” Phil explained “it’s not a well known brand, but we were looking for a natural product that has good ethics and believes in sustainability. Davines ticked all the boxes for us, the products are exclusive to salons, it’s a smaller independent family business and when we tested them we were really impressed.” Phil is obsessed with coffee so there’s no surprise that the new salon prides itself on serving a decent coffee and teapig teas, with a biscuit. If you’re looking for a fresh hairdressing experience, why not give Oaklams a try and to make it more tempting Oaklams are offering 1 20% off * until the end of January 2014.

Behind the Business
of
Meringue
Sue & Neil Chatterton Merinque, 284 Chatsworth Road
W
ith Neil’s background working as a Sous Chef in Prue Leith’s restaurant in London, it’s no wonder that Neil and Sue Chatterton’s Meringue, with its no nonsense approach to good food and customer service has proven so popular in its first twelve months. The business began on 29 November 2012 as they frantically prepared to open for last year’s Christmas Shopping Night on Chatsworth Road. If you haven’t been to Meringue yet, you’ll find an open plan kitchen and bakery area where you can see Neil and Sue at work, a spacious café with papers and magazines to browse, children’s table to keep the kids occupied and a shop area with goodies to take back home. Whether you try the cooked breakfast, coffee, soup, sandwiches or lasagne, tea, scones or cake, everything is prepared and baked in house with the emphasis on taste, flavour and freshness. Their speciality is, as the name suggests, a generous slice of delicious Lemon Meringue Pie and if you can’t manage it when you visit a portion to go is an absolute must! “Neil and I met whilst working at Dinnington Hall Hotel”, explains Sue, “Shortly afterwards Neil secured the job at Leith’s and I went with him to London.” For people who don’t know Prue Leith, she’s a restaurateur, caterer, and television presenter/broadcaster and cookery writer. She was also Chair of the British Government’s Campaign - the School Food Trust, has been a judge on the BBC television programme Great British Menu and also has her own Cookery School. “London was an exciting place to work and learning the business there was an invaluable experience. “Over eight years we worked in several city restaurants together but Neil’s passion was for baking, particularly bread so he decided to set up a small craft bakery and sold from a bread stall on Islington Market.”
With the arrival of children, Sue and Neil needed to be nearer to their family and returned to the Midlands. They took on a workshop at Markham Vale, on the M1 Commerce Park and began to develop the business supplying their bakery products direct to the public through local markets. They then ran The Old Smithy Café in Beeley on the Chatsworth Estate for 5 years but when the lease came to an end decided to look for new premises to take their business to a wider audience. “The old Pharmacy on Chatsworth Rd came up”, says Sue. “It was the perfect location to fulfil our idea of an open plan café and bakery where we could create a little drama, interact with the customer and welcome them into our kitchen. Page 44 • www.s40local.co.uk
From the first day, the local community support has been fantastic and we have gained not only customers but friends. Our hard working, local staff team know many customers by name and ‘service with a smile’ comes naturally. We wanted a new start, to feel part of the local community, to grow and develop together, thank you, it is a great place to be”. Here at Meringue we see another example of highly skilled and knowledgeable people choosing to make their living on Chatsworth Road and enhancing where we live. Welcome to Chatsworth Road from S40 Local and Happy 1st Birthday Meringue.

New Business
K
aren Rogers is new to Chesterfield, her new business StraightCurves is opening up in the new offices, above the refurbished market hall.
Her business name StraightCurves doesn’t make sense, an oxymoron inspired by a lecture she attended whilst at University, Karen explains “the name existed long before I knew exactly what the business would be, and it fits perfectly with my inability to draw a rectangle without rounded corners” says Karen. Karen trades as StraightCurves - it’s her design business, she’s a freelance designer and consultant in interior design, and more recently it’s become the name of her business, delivering high quality courses and workshops in all things arty and crafty! “StraightCurves, the craft business, evolved from a need to fill the spare days in my working week. I started making things, I was knitting scarves and things with the aim of building up stock to sell at fairs and markets, but as soon as I’d made a product someone bought it and I quickly realised that sharing my skills was where my true passion lay, not mass production!” One thing lead to another and my idea snowballed from selling knitted products into finding spaces where I could offer crafty courses. “I was looking at locations to run courses from on an adhoc basis, but the logistics of moving nine sewing machines and all the other equipment started to be an obstacle. I met Paul Stuart, a business advisor for Chesterfield council, and he convinced me to take a look at the new offices and suites above the Market Hall. A week after meeting Paul I was standing in the

room I now occupy” says Karen, “and getting very excited about the opportunities that the space offered me!” Karen’s had the keys to her new space for a number of weeks and she’s been busy. As I type there are six arty and crafty courses, 23 workshops scheduled and a range of clubs - the subjects range from drawing, digital photography, jewellery making, crochet, sewing machine skills, knitting, spinning, basketry, felting, through to first aid! The workshops are one-offs and vary in length, whereas the courses are 10 hours long, run over either five weeks in the evenings (6:30 to 8:30pm) or three weeks during the day (10:30am to 2:30pm) to fit around the school runs! The first courses at the new venue started on 11th November - some are already almost booked up and most others are starting to fill up as people discover them. All the people running the courses have been handpicked by Karen and have experience of, or are qualified to teach the subject, so you can be sure of quality instruction. The StraightCurves website features an online booking system and if you book now using the voucher opposite you can save upto 10% on all courses and workshops. Karen’s career route has been diverse, her training is in architecture and interior design where she worked successfully for many years including projects nominated for BAFTAs and in the Bank of England building. Her favourite interior design job was with PizzaExpress as Design Manager, UK. Responsible for store design and layout she was exposed to all areas of the business and gained

Festive Workshops Programme an understanding of how design can really make a difference to the working environment, “one of my favourite comments was from a waitress at a store who commented ‘excellent, you’ve moved the bin’, having worked as a waitress through University, I could really relate to how this small change could have such a large impact. I’m passionate about designing spaces that work for the people that use them” explains Karen. Karen had always fancied teaching and in 2009, when the recession hit PizzaExpress, she took advantage of a redundancy opportunity, and used the funds to return to University where she obtained her Post Graduate Certificate of Education to qualify as a teacher. In 2010 Karen secured her first teaching job in London, teaching resistant materials, textiles, electronics, CAD/CAM, food, graphics, engineering and construction. With her new skills and past experience it was now time to look at her quality of life. “I’d often visit my sister and her children in Eckington” says Karen, “and I decided that Chesterfield was the place for me, close to my family and away from the hustle and bustle of London.” Today Karen teaches at Springwell Community College three days a week and almost all her remaining time is given over to the new craft business, StraightCurves.
Here is a selection of what’s on this year...

If you want to find Karen and StraightCurves, you’ll need to head upstairs from the main market hall, Karen explains “I’m the first business to move into the studios above the main Market Hall. It’s not immediately apparent when you walk round the new market areas downstairs, but a significant amount of the investment is up here with the offices and the refurbished Assembly Rooms. It’s fantastic and worth a visit, we’d love to see you if you fancy popping in. Just head to the first floor from the entrance opposite the post office, but be sure to call first to check we’re in and have the kettle on!” So why not tap into your creative side, give yourself some ‘me’ time, learn a new skill or simply learn how to make do and mend, it’s the new upcycling!

Garden Tips
10
Garden Things December
1. Prune acers (Japanese Maples), birches and vines before the end of the year. Hard prune buddleia to keep them under control. 2. Keep an eye on any stored produce, bulbs and tubers to make sure the mice haven’t found them. Hanging them in a sack is usually a good way of both storing and protecting them, but remember that mice are amazing climbers. 3. Prune fruit trees (hard fruit only, like apples and pears) and bushes growing in the open (i.e. not trained against a wall). There’s all sorts of advice as to how to do this, but the general aim is to end up with something like an inverted wine-glass shape, allowing light and air to reach all parts of the plant. 4. Take cuttings of deciduous trees, shrubs and currant bushes (you can use some of the prunings). If you’ve not tried it before, why not give it a go? It costs hardly anything (a little compost), and is very satisfying. Even the most experienced of gardeners won’t get all their cuttings to root, so don’t be discouraged if it doesn’t work the first few times. 5. Once all the plants have died back, check to see if any of the revealed paths, fences etc. need routine maintenance, and prepare to do it on any nice sunny, dry days. 6. Winter is the best time to dig heavy ground, incorporating manure or compost. If you have a decent sized area, don’t try to do it all at once you’ve got a good couple of months to finish it all. 7. Keep everywhere clear of debris, which can harbour diseases and harmful organisms. But try not to be too fussy; old logs and pile of leaves tucked away somewhere are excellent over-wintering spots for essential wildlife. 8. Plan for next year; check seed catalogues and prepare a wish-list. Be realistic about what you can do, as failing to meet a cherished plan may discourage further attempts. 9. If you want to get children interested in gardening, there are lots of books aimed at different age ranges which would make good presents. Never be too dogmatic about when and how things need to be done – don’t insist on dragging them outside in the cold and wet to do something just because it’s the ‘correct’ time of year. Plants can’t read calendars… 10. Reduce the watering of houseplants, and mist them regularly to stop them drying out in the central heating. The ideal is to keep them clustered together in an unheated but light room.
2014 Potato Day A reminder that Transition Chesterfield will be holding their annual Potato Day on January 25th, hopefully in The Pavements as usual. We will be selling about 40 varieties of potato, plus onions, shallots and garlic, all at very competitive prices, and by the tuber and not weight – buy as few or as many as you like. You can pre-order, which saves money, using the order form which can be downloaded from our website (www.transitionchesterfield. org.uk). If you’re going to grow potatoes, start collecting egg boxes to chit the tubers in. Page 54 • www.s40local.co.uk

Business News ‘A satisfied customer’ Kip McGrath Maths and English Tuition
I am so proud of my grandson Sam! My grandson Sam is a wonderful boy! He is good at so many things but he has always found spelling difficult. It made him afraid to be brave when doing any writing and he found ways of avoiding any free writing at school because he didn’t know how to ‘get started’. His confidence was very low and he dreaded his SAT’s, as his school had predicted a Grade 2 in Literacy for him. I saw an advert for Kip McGrath last February and went to the school and met Jo, She assured me she could help and boy did she help my Sam!! She put together a programme to work on Sam’s spelling, his writing planning, hand writing and punctuation. Sam loved it. As he improved, Jo added stuff to cover grammar and the ‘technical’ bits that children now need to know. (Nouns, verbs, adjectives, phrases etc.) All part of English in my day at school! She extended his learning plan and vocabulary expansion and did some SAT practice papers. By May he could write an original piece of writing, do a comprehension reading task with accurate answers in full sentences and his confidence had grown to such an extent that he was asking for additional homework! My Sam… was asking for more writing homework, unbelievable! He even ‘cracked’ the correct use of the apostrophe! At the beginning of Year 6 he had a Reading age of 8 years 10 months, his Comprehension was 7 years 10 months and Spelling at Year 4 After only three months with Kip McGrath his Reading- was 10 years 6 months, Comprehension – 10 years 4 months and Spelling at Year 5. His SATs results this May this year went from predicted 2’s to a fabulous 4a and two 4bs for literacy. An extraordinary improvement, 2 years increase in just 3 months! Best investment I ever made for my wonderful grandson Sam. We took him to The Lion King in London to celebrate! Thank you Jo, thank you to all at Kip! From Sam’s Grandma Page 58 • www.s40local.co.uk

Conversion of pubs: Won’t solve the problem but it’s a start: A motion was recently tabled at the Chesterfield Borough Council meeting relating to planning permission. “That the Secretary of State help protect community pubs in England by ensuring that planning permission and community consultation are required before community pubs are allowed to be converted to betting shops, supermarkets and pay-day loan stores or other uses, or are allowed to be demolished. The motion was passed unanimously by members of all parties.

Type 1 diabetes affects 29,000 children in the UK who must take insulin every day just to stay alive. Edward (pictured) attends Westfield and was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes a year ago, age 4. His mum Alison says, “From day one he’s been as brave as a bear, but he has suffered. He was fast tracked for an insulin pump to help stabilize him, it’s helping considerably but he’s still currently unstable. He tells us every so often that he doesn’t want diabetes anymore and asks if he’ll have it forever. It’s heartbreaking. Recently we had a pretty close call with a severe hypo, it’s not the first time, it won’t be the last. Children and adults with Type 1 need a cure. The rest of our family were sponsored to wear onesies too. Some really great ideas are being researched and developed but it costs money to fund. In total we’ve raised over £800. We are extremely grateful to Mrs Kingdon and all the staff and pupils in supporting Edward, not just during the fundraising but also on a daily basis.” To find out more: jdrf.org.uk

Lucy Hibbert: Auto Immune Anaemia “My name is Lucy Hibbert, that’s me - third from the right, and on the 27 May 2010 I was diagnosed with a life threatening illness. I was taken to Sheffield Children’s Hospital and from then on I have always been there. My body destroys its own blood cells (the spleen) and sometimes my bone marrow can’t keep up with producing the new blood cells so the bone marrow closes down and I have no new blood cells. I then have to have blood transfusions. When I first went in, my haemoglobin was 4.5 and at the moment I am fine and have a normal haemoglobin of 12.4 but, if my illness hasn’t gone by next summer 2014 then I will have to have a operation to take out my spleen. This is because in later life it could cause other problems. Sheffield Children’s Hospital have done so much for me, so along with my five friends (Georgia Drummond, Liv Marriott, Sian Monk, Frances Cragg and Georgia Goodall) we decided to do some fundraising. So far we have done a car boot, a Disney princess walk around Chatsworth estate and bag packing in Marks and Spencers and have raised £800. We have now decided to take it to the next level and do a Christmas Fair. It will be held on Saturday 14 December 2013 at St Andrew’s Church on Newbold Road, Page 64 • www.s40local.co.uk
11am-3pm and, of course, in aid of Sheffield Children’s hospital. There will be a range of stalls - Homemade Crafts, Tombola, Cake and lots more. There will be a raffle as well with many prizes to be won- food vouchers, bowling vouchers, food hampers, ice skating, paint balling and many more!
Bring the kids along as there will be face paints, kids crafts and lots of fun and games! If you would like to donate anything or want any more details then please contact me on 07842 257234 or email me on lucy.hibbert@aol.co.uk Hope to see you there!”

Community News Uncle Vanya An Everyday Tale of Country Folk
doomed to a future of boring accountancy work and spinsterhood.
“When I hear a play of Chekhov’s, I want to tear my own up” George Bernard Shaw. Hasland Theatre Company offers the chance for you to see one of the great Anton Chekhov plays, Uncle Vanya, from 13th-18th January 2014. Uncle Vanya tells the story of a dysfunctional family, supposedly relaxing on a country estate, over the course of a summer. The family’s crisis is played out to the accompaniment of lectures on climate change, the theft of a cache of morphine, simmering sexual tension, vodka and the occasional bout of gunfire. But is it a comedy? Is it a tragedy? Is it a soap opera? Vanya himself is a middle-aged, middle-class, middle-manager, gearing up for a mid-life crisis on a country estate in the middle of nowhere. His niece, Sonya, seems

His brother-in-law, Alex, is plagued by ill-health. He is beginning to realise that his young wife, Yelena, may not really love him and that his academic achievements are pretty meaningless. Yelena suspects she has made a mistake in marrying such an old geezer. Does she dare to break free?
Vanya’s friend, Astrov, is an idealist and eco-warrior, but he has a weakness for the vodka and for the ladies. Their broke lodger, Telegin, pretends that everything is hunky-dory. He’ll do anything to avoid conflict. Just leave him alone to play his guitar! And...somewhere out there in the wider world, the peasants are dying of typhus and the workers are plotting revolution. Chekhov’s work has always divided opinion. Some people feel that it is difficult to understand, because it often has no very clear resolution to the plot, the characters are insufficiently heroic or villainous and they seem to spend a lot of time whingeing about how rubbish their lives are, despite the fact that they are quite well-off and live in nice houses. Many people love Chekhov for exactly this reason....it’s just like real life!

How many times do you think about extending, changing or adapting your home but simply don’t know where to start, what’s achievable, how much it will cost? We’ve been in the residential construction industry for over 30 years and this experience means there’s not much we’ve not seen, experienced or built. For a small set charge we offer an advice service where we listen to your requirements and assess if it’s possible to adapt your property to suit. If you later decide to go ahead we can provide quotations together with the end to end project management and delivery of the changes through our extensive local contacts.
