Intro Welcome to your festival edition!
We are proud to be supporting the Chatsworth Road Festival for the fourth year running. As a founder member with Deidre Gage I have this year taken a step back from the committee and handed the mantel of running the committee over to the very capable Jane Simmonds, Shirley Niblock and Rachel Scholfield plus a small group of business owners and people from the local community. To these we are extremely thankful. Deidre and I have remained involved and S40 Local have donated many hours to designing, laying out and producing the guide, the associated marketing materials, banners, business cards, postcards, posters etc plus we have as usual dedicated eight pages of this edition to listing the 100+ festival events.
We do this for a very simple reason, I live in the area, I know many of the businesses and organisations personally, I would like to see Chesterfield's independent
f

businesses succeed as this can only be a good thing for our community and our town. I would like our area to thrive, to be busy, to be interesting and, importantly, to be unique and different from all the clones. Please make the time to browse the festival events, get yourself out and about and support the festival between the Thu 1 and Sat 4 October. I might even meet some of you at one or two events. Looking to other things going on, in the past S40 has been likened to the old parish magazines, and this month St John’s at Walton have taken this a step further by taking two pages of the magazine and using them to deliver their news.
At S40 Local we aim to be agnostic and areligious and this edition also includes an invite to the Quakers open day at the Friends Meeting House, in the What’s On you'll also find events at many of the areas churches. We like to think there is space for us all. Enjoy the festival weekend. Paul.

Chesterfield's Shopping Festivals Words: Trevor The Ink Pictures: Courtesy R Shemwell / www.picturethepast.org.uk (Johnsons) Derbyshire County Council / www.picturethepast.org.uk (Plane)
The previous Chatsworth Road Festivals have been a real success, and we’re looking forward to this year's; but did you know there were Shopping Festivals in Chesterfield in the past? We didn’t either, but we recently found some old souvenir booklets in Chesterfield Local Studies Centre at the library and they are a truly fascinating reading.
Chesterfield. A Veritable Bargain City. 1914 souvenir brochure.
There were seemingly four shopping festivals over the years, the first being held in October 1910. It was organised by the Chamber of Trade and Corporation and it aimed to show that Chesterfield had just as much on offer as the shopping in bigger towns like Sheffield, Derby and Nottingham. £125 pounds was spent on posters and brochures, and there was a whole series of events. There was a large windows dressing competition with thirteen separate classes for things like best grocers, best bakers, best china shop, and best ironmongers. The winning shops got a diploma, and the owner of the overall best window received a silver rose-bowl; and if a member of the public correctly forecast the winners they could win a prize of £2 and 2 shillings. There were nearly 200 shops with windows to judge, and over 800 entries but no one got it completely right and the prize was split. The competing shops themselves stayed open late until 8pm, and kept their windows lit until at least 9pm. Woodhead’s Café won the novelty window prize, and Warner’s (a butchers in High St) won the silver rose-bowl. Lighting was the theme throughout the festival. The corporation’s Electrical Energy Committee dressed up a tram with 2,000 light bulbs (at a cost of £25!), plus flags and bunting, to advertise the Shopping Festival. They also Page 18 www.s40local.co.uk
hung a patriotic GR (for King George V) on the Market Hall, which was illuminated and even had searchlights. Outside in the market there were band performances, and in the evening of Thursday 13th there was a torchlight procession around town led by mounted police followed by dressed-up trade vehicles (including messenger boys on delivery bikes), people in costume, boy scouts and fire brigade engines. The 1914 festival was moved to April and was an bigger event than in 1910. The organisers spent £150 on posters and advertising, with 15,000 copies of the official brochure (96 pages!) being distributed to ‘the better class of residents’. ‘Sweet are the uses of advertisement’ said Henry Slack on the festival committee – we can only agree! Lights were again a big feature: instead of just a single tram, each of the corporation’s trams was illuminated, and there were festoons of electric lights around the market and at many of the shops. Woodhead’s café had 250 lights in their windows. The old Alpine Gardens (just west of the church) had ‘coloured scintillating rays’, whatever they were, and 1,000 lights in a sort of tent shape with a lover’s knot at the top. (The gas board responded to all this electricity nonsense with its own gas-lit arches). To help these illumination tradesmen were offered electricity and gas at a reduced rate. The shops were still at the heart of the event… there were more entries for the window dressing competition (they called it the ‘Feast of Windows’), and the first prize for forecasting the results was raised to £10! The festival adverts said ‘Do you want a £10 note.. simply for looking in shop windows?’. A tenner was a small fortune back then, worth at least £850 nowadays. There were over 3,000 competition entries, but no one correctly predicted all 15 winners so the prize money again was split. Like the first festival there were essay competitions for children: ‘My Impressions of
the Shop Windows of Chesterfield’ (first prize 10/6d), and one for ladies: ‘Why I Shop In Chesterfield’ (first prize 1 Guinea). With the 1914 festival came new ideas. The Premier Skating Rink in West Bars was hired by the Co-op for an exhibition about the making of its products: toffee making, pastry making (in electric ovens), bread making and the like, with sampling stalls and a buffet. Another idea was the holding of a week-long Pleasure Fair. This was held in the Cattle Market (today under Ravenside Retail Park; you can see pillars marked Cattle Market by the zebra crossing) and featured ‘roundabout shows’, a helter-skelter, shooting galleries, Aunt Sallies, and Rifle Bill’s Wild West Circus, plus side shows, stands, and stalls. You could also see Don Pedro walking a tightrope 70ft up - without a net - and be entertained by Paulos the Weird Egyptian (a magic act); or see The Dissolving Lady (the mind boggles). The evenings were lit by electricity and ended with Grand Fireworks Displays. But by far the most popular single event was the visit of a real aeroplane! Mr Bentfield ‘Happy’ Hucks, a pioneer aviator, brought his machine to Chesterfield and landed at Highfield Hall Park. He took off and landed several times, to show off the plane (an 80 hp Bleriot), but it was too windy to safely take any passengers. Buses were laid on and nearly 9,000 people turned out to see this truly amazing sight: a flying machine!
Cafés put on special lunches for festival attendees, and the cinemas and theatres had shows timed to suit visitors: the Corporation Theatre in Stephenson Hall had continuous performances (featuring a special act called The Aeroplane Ladies) that patrons could join and leave at will.
Shopping is a vital necessity. It is also a fine art. 1914 souvenir brochure.
The 1923 Festival was moved back to September. Opened by the Duke of Devonshire at a ceremony at the Market pump – bunches of balloons were released to signal the start of the festivities. It had much the same format as the previous ones, with illuminated tram cars, processions, fireworks, and a best window competition. The trades exhibition at the Premier Rink was now a general one and had 51 stands. You could see lens grinding, cigarette making, toy making, biscuit making, printing, pottery making, corn being popped, and upholsterers at work. You could also buy some items produced there as souvenirs. Like the 1914 version, the exhibition was really popular with 43,000 paying visitors over the week. Also popular was the gas appliance exhibition at the market hall, complete with live cookery lessons.

Our shopkeepers had learnt some things from previous festivals. They encouraged more people to come in to the shops, rather than just admiring windows from outside, by giving their own individual prizes and inducements– for example you could buy a whole side of ham for 3d, or maybe a new sewing machine for the same price, if you had the correct number in your festival brochure; and you also had a chance to win free items if you made a purchase in shops during the week. Some shops had gramophones and player pianos (available from Whites in the High Street) as in-store entertainment. There was also a sports and athletics day in Queens Park, with music, band completions, and fireworks. The procession round town was used to show off the fire-brigade’s latest machines; one of which had a radio set fitted so they could be called out if real fire broke out during the event.
Shopping is Civilisation. Civilisation is shopping. 1914 souvenir brochure.
The 1950 shopping festival was also held in autumn (September 30th till October 6th). It called itself a shopping carnival and doesn’t seem to have been as large as the previous events. The main feature of the carnival seem to have been three fashion parades at the Victoria Ballroom, with the local ladies’ wear shops showing off their best items. It was a sell-out. There was also the traditional best window completion, but only 41 traders took part. Shoppers could still win a prize – if you Page 20 www.s40local.co.uk
bought a programme with the correct serial number you could win a television set! Some of our favourite snippets from the old brochures include • A Ford advert for a Model T asking ‘Is 40 miles an hour good enough?’ (You could get Fords at Markham & Co, as they were agents: just call telephone number 19.) • A picture of S. Johnson and Son, Up to Date West End Ironmongers, still completely recognisable as our Johnson’s on Chatsworth Road, winner of a window dressing completion. Buy something worth 1 shilling or more and they refunded your tram fare! • ‘Sugar is a Food’ said an advert for Samuel Elliott’s, manufacturing confectioners of Park Road, claiming that ‘Doctors and Scientists realise this and recommend sweets in their many forms.. as necessary for the building up of Healthy, Strong and Vigorous Bodies’. They’d just produced a batch of 25 tons of boiled sweets. • Finally - if you come across a bottle of LOTE'S LITTLE LIFE DROPS, made on Beetwell Street, apparently ‘The cure for Tired Women and Nervous Men’ and for those of us 'looking old or feeling old', please send me a bottle! (PS: If you want to see more about shops in Chesterfield, the Museum is running a small exhibition until 10th October.)

Article Advertorial
‘’I wish we’d started this earlier!’’ ‘’Oh, why did we leave it so late?’’ ‘’We didn’t know the difference that you could make to us’’ Jo Linthwaite (Kip McGrath) Sadly these are the most frequent things we hear from both parents and some students before they go off to sit their GCSE Maths or English exams! The stress suffered by all parties when during that all important final year of secondary school, usually around the mock exams, when parents and students wake up to the fact that they are in danger of not getting the grades they want or need for their life’s ambitions. It is all very well saying the student must do more work or try harder, but more of the same rarely works. The student may have some real gaps in their learning and often a low level of confidence in their ability. Constant previous exam papers during class in the run up to the exam could exacerbate a situation where a student suffers low self confidence, which could result in a student settling for a lower grade than they really wanted or are capable of. Kip offers GCSE Maths, English language and English literature bespoke tuition for your teenager’s needs. But even we need a bit of time to pull the rabbit of higher grades out of the hat. We have reported many times on the ‘predicted’ to ‘actual’ significant improvement in grades and this year's students have done equally well. Some stories from this year Richard arrived last October. He was overly relaxed and laid back, unlike his mum! He was hovering around a grade D and Pat knew it would take more than luck to get him to a Grade C… a change of pace and attitude was effected by Sue and Pat and he richly deserves his C. Mum is delighted!.
Claire arrived in March, very stressed and anxious to get a GCSE Maths A*. She lacked confidence but was ambitious. Sue, our Maths tutor, soon turned her around and she ended up confidently tackling A* questions with ease. Rachel arrived in June for her GCSE Maths next year, in 2016. She knows what she wants and she and Sue sat down and devised a plan to get her there. One relaxed and confident young lady, she now knows what needs doing and by when, to get her grades. Big smiles, sensible girl! George arrived a mere 3 DAYS before his exam to work on his GCSE English literature with Julie, having had something of a pre exam meltdown. A single session helped to steady his nerves and focus his mind, but think how much more she could have done if he had come a bit earlier! The moral of this tale is … don’t be a George, be a Rachel. Come along as early as possible in the GCSE journey and give yourselves and us more time to help you enjoy the progress, gain the confidence and get the results you are really capable of next year. You can have a free assessment anytime and the investment for the sessions over the year will pay dividends in your teenager’s career and confidence for ever more. Call Jo now!

Enterprising Community Spaces After working in the team who saved and revitalised Loundsley Green Community Centre, Simon Redding and his wife Christine have joined forces with other social and community entrepreneurs to establish Monkey Park, a community hub in Brampton. Located on the site of the old Tiling and Bathroom Studio showroom nearer the Ashgate Road end of Chester Street, the premises are currently being remodelled to house a cycle hub, bakery, café and rentable and bookable workspaces for small businesses and individuals.
Simon explained “All good things start in the pub, Alastair (Meikle) and I have often thought we should do something with the building. Alastair thought it would make a good base for a cycle hub he wanted to set Page 34 www.s40local.co.uk
up and it would suit my idea I’ve had for a while for a community co-work space. We got chatting to others and Peter Fairhall from The Gingerbread Boy has come on board to operate his bakery, he also hopes to run courses teaching the community to bake from the premises.” "To complete the team and get the cafe up and running we've advertised for a café manager and will have interviewed by the time this edition is delivered." “We’re all local, living a stone’s throw from the location and make up a core team of local residents.”
Monkey Park is about being selfsustaining, part of the community and a hub for people to meet, learn, live and find support.
The core team have secured funds for the first years’ lease and the redevelopment costs. Over the first year they will create a balance sheet to enable them to secure the long term future for the building as a community asset.
The focus being to establish a credible and completely owned community asset within the first three years, with surplus profit being fed back into the venture.
“Monkey Park is established as a Community Interest Company (CIC), a not for profit organisation whose assets are locked in legally for the benefit of the community” explains Simon. “If a building is bought for the CIC it must be used as such. We’re not a charity we trade as a business with all profits used for the benefit of the community.” “We are still investigating funding opportunities and would welcome angel investors if anyone is interested."
The team are keen for the local community to be actively involved and welcome anyone who would like to volunteer. “There is loads to do, we have a Facebook page ‘chesterfieldmonkeypark’ with over 350 likes and a growing bunch of volunteers, but we can find voluntary jobs for many more people.” The vision for Monkey Park is to enable a vibrant local community, drawing together people of all backgrounds and experiences, to provide a neighbourhood hub and workspace to support community activity and social enterprise. The lease is signed, and parts of the hub will be open and running in September, with the café, cycle workshop and bakery opening shortly afterwards. “We have events planned for the Chatsworth Road Festival in early October, so we’re excited to make sure that things will be ready in time” adds Simon.
The cycle workshop will recycle secondhand bikes, refurbishing and reselling them to provide cheap, functional bikes for people to use as transport. “Surprisingly Chesterfield has areas where two thirds of the people don’t have access to a family car, so providing affordable cycles is high
on our priority list” Simon says. “There will also be children’s bikes to get more kids cycling from an early age.” The upper floor will provide a shared office workspace. Flexible membership will purchase access for a number of days a week, from £5 a week to appeal to community groups and people who work from home. It will be a place to come and work in a more sociable environment, working at home all the time can sometimes feel isolated.
It will be a hub for community enterprises to come together, share ideas and socialise. “One project we’re looking at straight away is the Community Enterprise Plan, we are leading a project to bring communities together across the borough and share ideas.
“In September we’ll be running a workshop to decide the boundary of our area, and to develop a community economic plan and consider the future. Similar to the councils strategic plan but at a local level driven by the people living in the area.” This is what Monkey Park is about, I’ll be keeping a close eye on progress and I hope to assist where I can through S40 Local.
Why Monkey Park? "Chester Street Recreation Ground was often called Monkey Park as it had a monkey puzzle tree in it, so we’re retaining this bit of local history." Words: Paul Chapman

Sam Broomhead Triathlete
Words: Paul Chapman Pictures: Sam Broomhead
If the idea of cycling out of Holymoorside up Loads Road sounds painful, you might want to spare a thought for Sam Broomhead who often does it five times consecutively as one of his training sessions. Sam who lives in Walton, is 18 and competes in amateur triathlons which involves a swim, cycle and run, typically a 750m swim (400m if in a pool), 20km cycle and a 5km run. Sam also does the odd Duathlon involving a run, cycle, another run, and Aquathlon, which involves a swim and run.
Sam explained how he first turned to triathlon “One of my old teachers at Brookfield, Mr Wileman, had completed an Ironman event and started a tri club for all years. Another teacher Mr Mason also takes part in triathlon. I’d always been a good swimmer and runner so had a go, I thought it was great. I started off quite slowly but when I took part in an event at Rother Valley I won my age group. It was a bit of a shock, I had no wetsuit and the swim was freezing, but I pulled through and covered the 150m swim, 5km bike and 2.5km run faster than anyone else, I started to realise I might be good at this!” “The tri sessions they first ran at school went well, and as I started improving I joined an athletics club. Here my coach Ian Menzies (2014 Regional coach of the year for athletics) has helped me knock six minutes off my 5km time since I first started. It also helps having a great squad to train with, who have become some of my best friends and really help push me in training.”
“Fortunately I get a buzz from training. I get bored if I’m not doing something. I started swimming at nine years old and swam competitively with Chesterfield Swimming Club so it’s been the norm for me to be training. “I’m now training at least 10 hours a week, as well as swimming on Mondays and Thursdays, I run and train with Chesterfield and District Athletics Club and on Tuesday nights I’m at Tupton with them for track sessions. I Page 38 www.s40local.co.uk
compete in 1500m, 3k, 3k steeplechase, 5km and Cross Country in the winter. “I have a recovery run on Wednesdays, a Hill or Interval session on Thursday and will do a longer run on Sunday of between 8 and 13 miles.
“In between I do turbo sessions at home on the bike, 2 x 20 min at race pace – on the turbo with my headphones on and a box set, recently Game of Thrones. Then there's three road rides, two short 30km rides and a longer weekend ride. “Being in Chesterfield is a real advantage for training, every ride starts with a categorised climb! Old Brampton, Owler Bar, Loads Road, Harewood Road etc, they are all reasonably quiet but not at all flat. The first time I descended Curbar I wasn’t aware of the hairpin and went straight on into the dry stone wall, I learnt a valuable lesson that day about getting to know your route.”
Categorised Climbs: Most climbs in cycling are designated from Category 1 (hardest) to Category 4 (easiest), based on steepness, length, and, if part of a race route, how far into the stage they are encountered. “Once I’m over the hills I can concentrate on position and technique, the section on the A6 between Matlock and Bakewell acts as my mini time trial.” So what inspires you to get out there and train? “The Brownlee brothers in the 2012 Olympics and beyond have been a real inspiration for me.
“Triathlon is much more accessible and open for people to take part. You can start at 8 or 9 years old on very short distances, the British tri site has all the details and the clubs and coaches are really supportive, that’s the place to go to find a local club.” Sam is performing well. He competes mostly in local events at the moment and won the short course race at Matlock recently. He’s also had a couple of second places and won
his age group at Chatsworth and Bassetlaw last year and more recently at Erewash.
“I recently had a top 20 finish against a field of 600, including some European and World Champions. Results like this in qualification races mean that this year I have qualified to compete at the European Duathlon Championships and also the World Triathlon Championships.” Sam gets a lot of local support from Rob Dixon at Igloo Cycles but has no official sponsors, “sponsorship would be a great help” says Sam. “Race entry fees aren’t cheap, kit and bikes are costly, even the cost of getting to events mounts up, so any help with sponsorship would be fantastic.” Sam has recently finished his A Levels in Biology, Chemistry and Maths at Brookfield and has started at Nottingham University studying Biology. He’s already checked out the triathlon club at the University and is hoping the opportunity to train as part of team will reap big rewards.
I wish him the best of luck. And if you see a young man on a white Cervelo bike on the roads, give him some space and a friendly wave. If you would be interested in helping sponsor an up and coming local athlete please get in touch via S40 Local.

1st Class Kitchens
Showrooms and Website Updates Words & Photos: Paul Chapman
To be a successful small business is hard work, you need to be available when customers want you, you need to stay on top of new trends and you have to be technically switched on.
1st Class Kitchens have been investing time recently in the online world, by increasing their Facebook engagement and updating their website. “The website update follows customer feedback and it was also quite a long time since it was last updated” says Lucy from 1st Class Kitchens “It perhaps took us a little longer than we expected but we wanted to ensure it was just right. It’s much more informative and in line with our brand and designs. We now have a meet the team page so people can see that we’re a family run business, we have customer testimonials, a gallery of our work and some before and after pictures which I think show what we can do to great effect.”
“We also have access to ‘colour my way’ which is an online application that allows you to pick a kitchen design and colour scheme so you can gain some inspiration at home before coming to see us to start on a final design.”
Page 42 www.s40local.co.uk
As well as online there are changes in the Walton and Derby Road showrooms too. For Walton these include new colours, contemporary matt finishes, two tone designs with lighter shaded wall units twinned with darker wood grain veneer on the bottom units which is very popular at the moment.
Derby Road showroom has a new Shaker design with painted doors which are available in 25 paint to order shades. It is also possible for them to be bespoke painted in any Farrow & Ball, Dulux, Crown or colour matched colours. The mix and match is very popular at the moment as it makes for a truly one-off kitchen design.
Also on display are new single piece acrylic splash-backs in greens, purples, blues and reds. These are easy to clean and much more flexible to install on-site than glass. Both showrooms feature a range of the new Bosch, Siemens and Neff appliances. Be sure to call in if you're planning a new kitchen!
• Top quality at affordable prices. • Expert advice and personal service guaranteed. • Family run business. • Complete design, supply, planning and installation service. • All the work is undertaken by our own, expert, time served craftsman.

WHAT'S HAPPENING ... at St COMPLIMENTARY
FULL BREAKFAST FOR FIRST TIMERS The Best Way to Start a Saturday Morning, a St Johnʼs Menʼs Breakfast Several years ago, I was invited to have breakfast with a group of men I barely knew. I rather enjoy a cooked breakfast now and again and meeting new people over breakfast seemed a great way to get to know each other. On my arrival, I received a friendly welcome and a cup of tea. A short while after I arrived, breakfast, cooked by church members, was served. The food was very good and the conversation flowed. It proved to be an interesting and heart warming experience which, in fact, helped lay the foundation for further friendships. Following breakfast, and a quick clear up, I was surprised to see that we had a guest speaker. This was a chap from St Johnʼs who had been working with
aid agencies in Azerbaijan. There followed a short presentation on the plight of refugees, and what was being done by the world to assist them. It was moving and thought provoking and was followed by a Q&A session. In the two hours I had been out, I had been well fed and felt buoyed by the friendship and conversation. I had also been given something to think about. These breakfast sessions take place four times a year, in St Johnʼs Parish Centre. The cost is just £3. The next one is on Saturday 17th October at 8.30am and the talk will be about Dementia Friends. Everyone is welcome. If you are interested, please contact Dave Platt on 01246 236042. Dave Platt
FRIENDSHIP MATTERS Itʼs also important that you feel well mentally. Contact with family and friends plays a vital role in this, but what do you do when your family live away? How do you enjoy the company of others if youʼve lost your spouse or partner? How do you make new friends when you live alone? Itʼs a well documented fact that staying active – mentally as well as physically – being with other people, learning new skills, passing on your skills and feeling valued has a positive impact on our health and wellbeing – particularly as we get older. One of the ways to achieve this is to join a friendship group. The Third Thursday Friendship Group meets on the Page 48 www.s40local.co.uk
Feeling well is not just about being physically fit
third Thursday of every month from 2pm until 4pm in Meeting Room 1 at St Johnʼs Parish Centre, Walton Back Lane. This group is a way to meet new friends over cake and a cuppa in a safe environment. Everyone is welcome and we have a programme of gentle activities, speakers and opportunities to learn something new. There is a small charge of £1 to cover refreshments and we can sometimes help with transport if there is a problem. Why not come along and see if this is for you? Bring a friend or come alone, we promise a warm and friendly welcome. For more information call the office on 01246 566205. On 17th December we will be holding a Christmas Tea Dance. Even if you donʼt dance, this will be a fun event, so please come along. Tickets are just £2 and available by ringing Hazel on 01246 236042.
JOHN'S WALTON? TUESDAY IS THE NEW SUNDAY
Tuesday Worship at St. John's, Walton, does exactly what it says on the tin!! This is a service held at St. John's church each Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. The first Tuesday of each month takes the form of a service of Holy Communion with 3 familiar and inspirational hymns, together with a bible reading, prayers and a short message. The service usually concludes at about 12:15. But, it doesn't end there!! The service time is followed, at about 12:30, by lunch in the church centre which costs just 拢3. Tuesday lunch is an integral part (although it is optional) of the Tuesday Worship experience!! A delicious 2 course meal is prepared for you in the church kitchen and is then served to you at your table, and rounded off with tea or coffee. Conversation flows and friendships are formed and strengthened. In December we have a special Christmas service followed by a very good Christmas lunch. I have been going to Tuesday Worship for quite a few years now and you will
often see me on the door welcoming you in!! I really look forward to my mid-week 'top-up' of worship and fellowship. If you are hard of hearing, a loop system is available to you. If your sight is poor we have large print service sheets and hymn books. I am sure that if you speak to any member of the Tuesday Worship congregation, they would say how much they feel a part of St. John's and of the congregation as a whole. Contact the Church Office on 01246 566205 for more information. Carol Paton

Chesterfield
What's in a Name? Jim: What’s this U3A thing you belong to Dave? Dave: It's a uni Jim, but not as we know it. Jim: Never heard of it before you mentioned it. Dave: Never heard of U3A? – You're probably in the majority though, even amongst people of retirement age. Jim: Why them? Retired people, I mean. Dave: Because U3A is the largest organisation in the UK providing activities and friendship for people of our age. Over 300,000, yes that's five zeros, belong to U3As up and down the land. There are 15 in Derbyshire alone, with about 4000 members. From Chesterfield to Ashbourne, New Mills to Long Eaton – and we're growing, Alfreton, Dronfield and Hope Valley started recently, Bolsover is the latest. So what would you call an organisation for people no longer in full time employment that provides all sorts of activities Walking, Wine Appreciation, Philosophy, Patchwork, Golf, Geology, Aviation History, Art History, Spanish, Singing for Fun, Mah-jong and so on for the over 200 different Groups to join across the county? Some even do Latin! All driven using a self-help/DIY philosophy. Well, we call it U3A – University of the Third Age. Jim: Third Age? What’s that? Dave: Think of childhood as the first age, career/home-making/family as the second, then retirement is the Third Age. Jim: Why University? Dave: Well…, only in the very widest sense of extending a person physically and mentally. We have no paid professors, no exams, no fixed curriculum. We neither ask for, nor give qualifications. So don't be put off by that word university – just look at the range of opportunities that there are to exercise, socialise and learn – and all for the fun of it. We just call it U3A. Every U3A is different, although we are all affiliated to the parent organisation, the Third Age Trust, and all follow the same philosophy, which is that the expertise and knowledge comes from within the groups from ourselves, the members. The people who manage a U3A do not organise group activities, their members do that. And Page 50 www.s40local.co.uk

they don't choose what the activities should be – this is again done by the members. Some Derbyshire U3As are very new but Chesterfield is one of the older U3As, we will be celebrating our 21st birthday in November 2015. It all started with a walking group with just 29 members. Now they have almost 1000 and have been growing every year. Jim: So how does it work? How do I join? Dave: You fill in the form, pay a small subscription which varies from U3A to U3A, at the moment Chesterfield membership is £21 for two people living at the same address and £14 for one person. Once you are in it is up to you to make of it what you will, meet new people, get new ideas. We have open meetings every other month, where all members can attend, usually with a speaker but also just to socialise. We also have coffee mornings every other month to chat and meet others plus an afternoon drop in twice each month. Each U3A publishes their own newsletter, and there is the national Third Age Matters magazine which comes in the post about five times a year. Then there are the interest groups. Some are outdoors, like walking and bird watching. Some meet at obvious places – theatre group or bowls for instance. Many groups meet in members' homes, libraries, community centres, village halls, whatever suits the size and function of the group. Some employ occasional outside speakers but, in line with our DIY principles, members mostly teach or share their experiences. Jim: OK I’ll give it a go. When are you going again?

First Class Learning Celebrates 10 years in Chesterfield! Come to our open day on Tuesday 9th October, form 4-6pm at the Church Centre, Longedge Lane Wingerworth and find out how First Class learning can help your child improve their skills in Maths and/or English. We have centres based at St Mary’s Catholic High School, Wingerworth Church Centre, Hasland Community School and Brampton Primary School and run on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings respectively. Centre manager Helen Loizou has been running after-school maths and English centres for over 20 years and has been helping students from the ages of 4 upwards. Students have gone on to become successful in many areas including: Personnel Managers, Tax experts, Teachers, Architects, Policemen, Prison officers, Biochemists, Nurses, Entrepreneurs, Medics and Dentists. The common factor has been that studying with First Class Learning has removed obstacles to them following their chosen career.
Page 52 www.s40local.co.uk
Many of the students that attend the Chesterfield First Class Learning centres start because their parents want their children to achieve their potential. With worksheets to complete on a regular basis that are tailored to each child the work is set at a level that encourages children to learn. Children increase in confidence and knowledge and exceed the expectations placed on them. First Class Learning’s worksheets are designed to make learning accessible to students with Dyslexia and other learning difficulties and students that do not have English as their first language. It is great for helping any student of any ability improve their Maths and English skills.
First Class Learning Chesterfield is proud to sponsor students Alicia and Ella Barrett the world class athletes in Chesterfield. To find out more please contact Helen Loizou on 01246 555959. Helen Loizou.

'Celebrations'
25 Years of the Chesterfield Embroiderers Guild Words & Pictures: Paul Chapman
Long before Kirsty Allsopp inspired sewing bees to recycle, upcycle, restore and indulge in all manner of crafts, the Chesterfield branch of the Embroiderers Guild was encouraging and supporting people to stitch and promoting awareness of everything textiles. This year the local branch celebrate their 25th anniversary, and are holding an exhibition of members work themed “Celebrations”. The exhibition runs 12-14 November at Rose Hill Church from 10am to 4pm. The National Embroiderers Guild was formed in 1906 and is a registered educational and museum charity. “The guild holds a collection of historical pieces that have significant influence” explains Barbara. “People often think embroidery is just about tapestry, the Bayeux tapestry known the world over. More locally we have Hardwick Hall just a stone’s throw away with some beautiful historical tapestries on display. “Art moves on, people think oil paints, water colours, sculptures but textile based art is ever present. Artists such as Graham Sutherland produced the contemporary piece that hangs in the rebuilt Coventry cathedral, and the flamboyant Grayson Perry does a lot of work with textiles. There is a very mixed group of well-known designers and artists now taking up needles and it’s a really interesting field of work.” The Chesterfield Guild is keen to encouraging people to pick up the skills and pass on their knowledge. They have 36 members who meet once a month St Mary's Church Parish Centre. Jane explains “Our numbers are fairly stable, in the past we become a bit too big but some members moved to a Sheffield group, when that was established. Within the wider Guild people move around and visit presentations and talks at different guild groups, so the attendance at any meeting varies.” “We’re passionate about textiles” says Jane, “We’re not just a bunch of old ladies who sit and stitch, although five of our members are
Page 54 www.s40local.co.uk
founder members of the Chesterfield Guild and will receive 25 year awards this year!” “At the moment we are currently working with poet Matt Black and photographer and digital artist Paula Moss on the Chesterfield Diversity Project. People in Derbyshire have been interviewed, buildings and the landscape have been considered and we are producing work that will be displayed, the four Derbyshire Guilds contributing a piece each” says Jane. “In addition we’re working on decorating the Christmas tree for St Marys Church producing embroidered Angels. We also ran a stall on Chesterfield Market for National Day of Stitch in August). People came along and we had embroidery packs for them to take away, we did insist they made a start on the work on the stall before they took the packs away, so people were actively involved at the outset” says Barbara. Barbara added “I’ve stitched all my life, dressmaking mainly and have become more actively involved with textiles since I retired.” The textile art, functional clothing, bags, unique pieces of art, 3D pieces, wall hanging, soft furnishings and clothes displayed in the studio in which I’m meeting Jane and Barbara are testament to that. Jane has also always sewn, “I taught textiles after taking a degree but felt I spent too much time teaching and not enough time doing my own work. Career changes meant I could apply more time to textiles and now in retirement I enjoy stitch immensely.” For Jane and Barbara being a member of the guild enables them to meet others with similar interests, learn from others and share their skills, ideas and inspirations. If you would like to know a bit more about the guild or you’d like to get involved, why not get along to the ‘Celebrations’ exhibition, they’d love to talk to you and they do have space for new blood in the guild and would encourage anyone to come along who has an interest in embroidery and textiles.

Musical Director Andrew Marples said of the show "It is the closest to a true English opera Gilbert and Sullivan came – truly a great work and my personal favourite. A production at the Pomegranate Theatre with full orchestra, set and costumes, not to mention some outstanding voices, is a rare and quite special event these days. I hope the public support us – they won’t be disappointed!" 10 Garden Garden TipsThings
Garden Things for the Autumn Words: Colin Harrison Pictures: Robert Nixon Betts 1. If you have heavy clay soil, make a start on digging it over, leaving the lumps to be broken down by frost over winter. If you have any compost, which will improve the soil structure, incorporate it as you go. 2. Plant late winter and spring-flowering bulbs, these will make everyone happy and provide food for wildlife. 3. Thoroughly clean greenhouses and cold frames while the days are still warm enough for them to dry out. 4. Birds (especially pigeons) are fond of leafy green vegetables, so deter them with netting or lengths of black thread tightly stretched across and around the plants. 5. Keep harvesting runner and french beans; like many vegetables (including courgettes) they will keep trying to produce more as long as they’re not allowed to set seed. It’s the same principle as dead-heading ornamental plants, but there comes a time when they really have finished, so cut them off at ground level, leaving the roots, which will have collected valuable nitrogen, in the ground. 6. Plant over-wintering onion sets and garlic, and continue to sow winter lettuces (there are several varieties with varying degrees of hardiness: lamb’s lettuce, Winter Density, Valdor are just a few). 7. Order and plant new fruit trees, and move existing ones (and shrubs) while the ground is still warm. 8. Keep on top of tidying jobs, but leave as many ornamental seed-heads as possible; they can look good, especially frosted, and provide food for birds. Attracting these to the garden can also help with pest control, as they will eat the eggs and larvae of some nuisance bugs. 9. Houseplants will need watering less often, and don't need to be fed any more. 10. Cover ponds with nets before heavy leaf-fall clogs them up – remember to remove the collected leaves before they weigh the net down or start to rot. If you have excess produce that doesn't freeze well, or you've just run out of room, Transition Chesterfield hold produce swaps at their monthly Green Drinks, on the first Wednesday of the month (7:30pm) at The White Swan, St. Mary's Gate (opposite the church).
