The recent BBC programme Blue Planet has struck a nerve with many people, combined with China no longer taking 25% of our plastics many people are rightly concerned and are looking for alternatives. Farm shops, grocers and businesses like Sauced Here can offer food direct from producers, cutting out the middleman, reducing food miles and perhaps packaged in paper bags. Our two milkmen Mike Wilgoose and Mick Barratt can help you do your bit to reduce the plastics used too by switching back to milk in bottles.

People Alastair Meikle is a cycling advocate, the ‘go to guy’, who keeps abreast of developments, reviews plans, makes suggestions and works with the council and developers where possible to improve the cycling infrastructure of the area… plus he is a man who uses his bike for getting from a to b and would encourage more to do so. He doesn’t do all this alone, but in December Alastair was awarded with the ‘Contribution to Sustainable Travel Award’ by Modeshift, an organisation who support sustainable travel, to recognise the continued work done and success he’s achieved. I’m sat in the straw bale extension of Alastair’s busy family house and his lifestyle echoes that of a man with the interests of our planet at heart. Although this transition seems to have happened somewhat organically. Alastair was born in Chesterfield, lived in Tapton and attended Tapton House School which he left in 1974. He was offered two jobs, one as a draftsman at London Underground and one starting as an Air Traffic Controller. “I took the air traffic job and worked at London Air Traffic Control Centre for two years before moving to Liverpool Airport for seven years and then back to London where I spent a further 20 years.” “During that time, I was living in Reading and started using my bike more and more to move about because it was just easier and quicker than driving. “I became a member of the local cycle Campaign, bought a Brompton fold up bike and started cycling to the station, folding my bike up to take on the train and then completing my journey to work on my Brompton as I cycled away from the station each morning.

“There must have been about 1000 people at the workplace and I was one of only two that cycled to work.” Alastair left the air traffic job and he and his family travelled to Europe for a year in a motorhome. “During this time I remember being particularly impressed by the cycle infrastructure in Holland.” “We decided to settle back home in Chesterfield” explains Alastair. “My daughter was at Old Hall and I asked whether there was any cycle training at the school. There wasn’t but I was told I could volunteer as a Derbyshire County Council Cycle Training Instructor, which I did, and later found out about Bikeability, a national course, which I attended and started providing training locally. “Around this time, the Chesterfield School Sports Partnership were awarded funding to deliver cycle training in schools. I established a company ‘Wheely Fun Wheels’ which has grown to meet training demand and now has 10 instructors working part time to deliver cycle training to 75 schools across Chesterfield and North-East Derbyshire. “Alongside this, when I arrived back in Chesterfield I was cycling my daughter to school on a trailer bike and was approached by a member of the Chesterfield Cycle Campaign saying I should join. I did and in 2005 became the secretary. “Top of my agenda is to maintain a good open relationship with Derbyshire County Council (DCC) who run the highways, although most cycle infrastructure is physically in the borough it’s the responsibility of the highways to deliver etc.” This approach has led to some great successes. “I’m really proud of the the new link to the railway

People station” says Alastair which happened because of local Sustrans rangers who brought the idea to the attention of Sustrans nationally and DCC adopted the idea too. “The route crosses over two existing and two new bridges between the skatepark area and the railway station, it taking riders safely from the south and west of town directly along a completely traffic free environment.”

Chesterfield Cycle Campaign: The campaign keeps you up to date on cycle news in the area, maintains a map of local cycle routes (available from the Chesterfield Tourist Information Centre), holds regular meets, social events etc, helps with the Cycle in Style events and film nights. Membership is just £10 for a family and they can be contacted via www.chesterfieldcc.org.uk

Other cycle infrastructure includes A61 growth corridor where the aim is to create a traffic free cycle route from Dronfield to Clay Cross. The first stages have been delivered, the link is already in place to take you from Whittington Moor to Storforth Lane and the next financial year should see links from Dronfield to Unstone, Peak Resort have delivered a new bridleway around part of their site and DCC are working on a traffic free route from Peak Resort to Whittington Moor roundabout to link it all together.

Brampton Bicycle Club: BBC sessions take place in the spring and summer months and during the winter they have a social fitness session at Queen’s Park, next dates are 4 Feb and March 4 (8:30 to 9:30am). Come down and do one lap or 20! www.bramptonbicycleclub.org.uk

Plans are also in place to increase the path width and quality along Rother Washlands path (behind Derby Road from Jawbones Hill towards Hasland) where links will be established to the Avenue site to Tupton and out to the Five Pits Trail. Alastair has had his input to these plans and as a result has become a voice for cycling in Chesterfield and has the ear of the DCC where needed. He’s also very influential in ensuring infrastructure is effective and more local facilities exist such as secure cycle parking like the new double decked parking area at the station. There are more parking areas in town outside new developments and cycle access to new developments eg: Lidl on Chatsworth Road has been improved as a result of Alastair’s work with DCC and the developers. As well as the advocacy work Alastair is involved with ‘Inclusive Pedals’, a social enterprise running adapted cycles based in Queen’s Park and delivering cycling sessions to people that are unable to use a standard bicycle and he coaches at the Brampton Bicycle Club which aims to encourage young riders to develop their confidence through fun cycling sessions in a safe traffic free environment … with a competitive edge. The Mode Shift award is a deserving accolade for Alastair’s hard work campaigning. “Each year DCC put forward a project for one of Modeshift’s Sustainable Transport Awards. I was put forward for the Individual Contribution to Sustainable Transport Award and won! A national, three-day conference takes place each year, this year it was hosted in Sheffield, so it was great to be involved and I’m very glad for to receive the award in recognition of the work I do.” I’d like to express my thanks to Alastair for his efforts… the link to the station is great and makes a difficult and dangerous route much safer taking you away from the traffic. New Life. The old Co-op. Words & Images: Chesterfield Borough Council

Work has begun to redevelop the former Co-op department store on Elder Way, Chesterfield. The £10.5 million redevelopment by Jomast Developments is part of the Northern Gateway project led by Chesterfield Borough Council. The store has been empty since closing in July 2013. When completed, the building will include: • Seven ground floor family restaurants and bars • A 92 bedroom Premier Inn hotel on the first and second floors • A health and fitness centre in the basement Adam Hearld, commercial director, Jomast Developments, said: “This has been a difficult and complex project to get off the ground and having resolved a number of pre development issues we are now delighted to be able to start on what we believe will be an exciting and vibrant leisure scheme in the heart of the town centre. “We are anticipating completing the comprehensive refurbishment of the former Co-op building in September 2018 with the Premier Inn, bars, restaurants and gym opening to the public shortly afterwards. ““The council’s environmental improvements on Elder Way and Knifesmithsgate will complement our scheme by enhancing the setting to this significant investment in Chesterfield Town Centre. We will co-ordinate our development programme with the council throughout 2018. “These proposals together with the redeveloped multi storey car park and wider plans for Northern Gateway will be critical in revitalising this part of Chesterfield town centre to provide a really exciting environment for people to visit, stay, eat, drink and work in.” Page 16 www.s40local.co.uk

Chesterfield Borough Council has supported the private sector companies in the development by gaining a £5.83 million grant from the Sheffield City Region Investment Fund for landscaping improvements to Elder Way and Knifesmithgate which will benefit the Co-op development and the wider Northern Gateway scheme. Funding is also being sought for further environmental improvements to connect Saltergate with the heart of the town centre. The existing Saltergate multi-storey car park will also be redeveloped by the council in a multi-million scheme to provide safe, secure 24 hour parking for people using the hotel, restaurants and local shops. Councillor Amanda Serjeant, Chesterfield Borough Council’s deputy leader, said: “The Northern Gateway scheme is no longer a plan on a piece of paper, it is a reality. “From here on the pace of the project will grow as the redevelopment of the former Co-op building will be followed in a few months by us starting work to demolish and replace the Saltergate multi-storey car park, before moving on to other parts of the scheme. “The old Co-op is a dominant building in the town centre and it has been difficult to see it closed over the past few years. Seeing work start to bring it back in to use gives the town a real confidence boost. “The growth of Internet shopping is causing hard times on high streets up and down the country but as people see work progress on this building they will see the northern side of the town centre coming back to life. The customers of this development will support existing town centre shops and help encourage other retailers to open shops to replace those that have closed down.”

Peter Swallow, chair of Destination Chesterfield, added: “The start of work on transforming the former Coop building on Elder Way is a major step forward in the development of Northern Gateway and the regeneration of the town centre. “Chesterfield is going through some very exciting times and the redevelopment of the Co-op building is just one of a number of development opportunities that are now coming to fruition which will change the face of the town better so that it is equipped for the future. “It is a key development in helping increase the vitality of the town centre as well as preparing Chesterfield to take full advantage of the opportunities that the HS2 station will bring with it.” The wider Northern Gateway scheme will see an enterprise zone for small and medium sized businesses on part of the site of Holywell Cross (Donut) car park and refurbishment of the existing Saltergate multi-storey car park. It is estimated the scheme will create around 500 jobs.

he ‘crooked spire’ topping the Church of St Mary and all Saints is without a doubt Chesterfield’s most famous landmark. But just a few hundred metres away another unusual but lesser known church meets regularly, notable not for its architectural oddity but for the fact that it is a church on wheels.

The Church on the Bus exists to serve the homeless in Chesterfield and Matlock areas, to be ‘a place of hope for the homeless’. This can take many forms, whether it is providing food, drink and clothing, giving counselling, prayer, or just being a safe and dependable place to chat and feel accepted for those most vulnerable in society.

Supported by several churches and groups in Chesterfield, the project was founded by Alan Park in 2004, who saw the need for a year round presence for the homeless, not just in the winter months when they are more typically accommodated. The bus travels around and stops in various nightly or lunch time locations, receiving around 15 to 30 people each time. Volunteers give out hot drinks, sandwiches, and biscuits, as well as distributing essentials such as toiletries, clothes, shoes and sleeping bags that have been donated. Amazingly, tens of thousands of sandwich meals have been provided over the 13 years that the bus has been running! Although it is incredibly important to provide help in such practical ways, the bus has an equal focus on meeting the emotional and spiritual needs of each visitor. The goal is to facilitate a warm and welcoming place of shelter; somewhere one will be listened to and respected in the company of others. “We try to build a foundation of trust and respect, to break down the barriers,” explains a volunteer: “The visitors that come to the bus, come for company and to feel part of something within a society that rejects and ignores them.” Support is not just limited to time on the bus, as volunteers also offer assistance with essential everyday tasks such as filling in forms or completing housing applications. Help with shopping trips or hospital visits can make a big difference to a vulnerable person. A weekly art group, The Gate, as previously featured in S40 Local and where the artist

Craig Burr discovered his talents, is run by the bus and meets in Saint Augustine’s Church, allowing members to make new friends and grow in confidence in a safe social setting. Church on the Bus could not exist without a team of volunteers. Driving, hosting and coordinating the sessions, preparing food and managing donations are all essential jobs. Simple food preparation becomes a very large task when around 80 sandwiches are given out each evening! Currently, the oldest volunteer is an amazing 94 years of age and regularly attends one of the bus’s lunchtime sessions! Many local churches, individuals and Chesterfield groups are involved with the work of the bus. Unused food is often donated by Greggs sandwich shop. The women’s singing group Aurora recently held a concert with proceeds going to the bus, while local business Giraffe Graphics has reached their goal of donating 100 sleeping bags. Each year, St. Thomas’ Church donates a large number of wrapped gifts to give out to visitors over the Christmas period. The church on the bus has a website page for anyone interested in finding out more or volunteering. elen Miller and Philip Stuart are the masterminds behind a great new business which was established in November last year. ‘The Horse and Jockey’ offers a full mobile bar service that can be sited at your event. They just pop up the serving hatch and the party can begin. The sister and brother were both having similar thoughts, Helen a Prosecco Bar and Philip a Gin Bar, when after discussing their plans at a local football match they decided to combine their ideas and create a high quality vintage mobile bar. “We bought the Rice horse box from a lady in Cheshire late last year, it has a vintage contemporary look. Rice have been building trailers since 1932 and the trademark aluminium roof and body panels are instantly recognisable, reminiscent of 1930’s French cars and trucks” explains Helen, “This is not a new idea, there are a number of similar businesses in the UK so we knew we had to achieve a really high standard to attract customers to our business”. They then spent some time designing the interior to ensure that they could provide the required services that their customers would demand. The trailer was then moved to Philip's workshop garage where he carried out all the internal refurbishment. “During the refurbishment stage we were keen to retain the vintage feel of the original trailer whilst combining this style with modern fixtures and fittings to give the bar a real wow factor” says Philip. The bespoke interior includes all modern bar fittings including pumps, refrigeration, ice making, highly polished solid oak bar top and shelving, LED lighting, once hooked up

to the mains the horse box is transformed into a fully mobile bar. After the installation of a catering serving hatch the bar was professionally resprayed and the transformation was almost complete. The final piece of work is to be carried out by local sign artist Russ Young who has been working with the pair to create customised branding for the business and will be completing the sign written artwork on the horsebox. The Horse and Jockey Bar carries a full stock of drinks, Frizzenti Vino Frizzante and Frizzenti Vino Rosato on draft, a fine selection of bottled Proseccos, a carefully selected Gin and Tonic menu, a range of Vodkas, delicious Cocktails, Craft Beers and Lagers and a range of soft drinks. RESOLVE TO GET YOUR PENSION ARRANGEMENTS ON TRACK THIS YEAR Peter Boardman of Somersall Financial Management Ltd provides some useful tips worth considering. The start of the year is a good time to make sure you have taken advantage of all the allowances and reliefs available to help you boost your pension pot before the end of the tax year. So it’s worth considering these tips:

1. Maximise the current tax breaks Subject to certain limits, for every 80p you pay into your personal pension, the government adds 20p in tax relief, boosting the total contribution to £1. However, higher rate taxpayers can claim extra tax relief through their annual tax return, meaning that a £1 contribution can cost them 60p. Boosting your pension savings now will allow you to benefit from the current rate of tax relief.

2. Carry forward your allowance The maximum that you can contribute to all of your pension schemes and receive tax relief is called the ‘annual allowance’. In addition to your 2017/18 allowance you can use any unused allowance from the previous three years and still benefit from tax relief at your highest marginal rate. The £40,000 allowance that was in place in 2014/15 must be used by 5 April 2018 or it will be lost.

3. Save your personal allowance If you earn more than £100,000 you will lose 60pc of the money you make to tax because £1 basic personal allowance is removed for each £2 of income over £100,000. If you earn above £123,000 in 2017/2018 you will lose your personal allowance altogether. However, you can reduce your taxable income by making pension contributions. For example, someone earning £123,000 could make a net pension contribution of £18,400 (£23,000 including basic rate tax relief) to bring their taxable income back down to £100,000 and get all of their personal allowance back.

4. Beware of cashing in your pension Taking money from your money purchase pension scheme at retirement without any restrictions could seem tempting, but it may exhaust your funds or unwittingly push you into higher rate tax bands and may trigger a reduced annual allowance of £4,000 – which may impact any future pension savings. Many people are unaware of the tax liability that could be triggered by cashing in a pension. You could take your pension in one lump sum but it may be more taxefficient to phase withdrawals over several tax years to avoid higher rates of income tax.

5. Consider the lifetime allowance If the cumulative value of your pension payouts exceeds £1 million over a lifetime, there will be a 55pc tax on the excess. This limit is called the ‘lifetime allowance’, which will rise to £1.03 million on 6 April 2018 in line with the Consumer Prices Index. If the lifetime allowance is a concern, you can use your income to pay up to £2,880 annually into a pension for a non-earning spouse, or a child; that sum will be automatically increased to £3,600 through basic rate tax relief. Camera Settings In general, the way to obtain the photo that YOU want to create is by changing the camera settings, which are there for one purpose alone: To allow us to get the proper exposure of whatever we are interested in. I will tackle the 4 most important settings.

1. The Frame Remember, everything in the frame is YOUR responsibility. 1) ISO: It allows us to select how sensitive to the light our sensor is. The more sensitive (the larger the number) the least light you need to properly expose your subject, but, as a side effect, the more "noise " (electronic interference) you will get from the inherent flaws of the circuit amplifier inside your camera. 2) Aperture: The aperture will control two things 1) the amount of light that reaches the sensor and 2) the depth of field that the camera will capture. In plain English this means that you will get more or less things out of focus. Larger apertures mean that there will be less things in focus. Like in those nice portraits where the backround is blurred. The opposite extreme its landscape photography when we want everything to be sharp, this is done by closing the aperture. 3) Shutter Speed: It controls the amount of time the sensor is receiving light. If we are shooting in plain daylight, we want the shutter speed to be very fast, because the amount of light is enormous. In contrast, inside our home we would have to use a slower speed to allow enough light to reach the sensor. Problem is, the slower the setting the more prone to blur. We can also use this setting to control the appearance of moving subjects, for example, to create the sensation of speed, or on the contrary, to "freeze" the action of something going fast. 4) Manual Mode: If we control the Aperture, the camera will decide how fast it needs to trigger the Shutter Speed and the ISO setting. The same happens when we select the Shutter Speed, the camera will take control of the other two as it needs to get the right exposure. When we go to Manual, the camera will stop calculating the parameters and will give us full creative control on the amount of light it is receiving. Of course, this is exciting, but at the same time it could mean photos too dark or too bright to be usable. This is why it is recommended that we use it when we have more experience. t's really easy to fall into the habit of thinking everything in the world is bad and getting worse, especially if you follow the news. Personally, it can sometimes feel a bit overwhelming and I need to switch off.

I'm not denying bad things do happen BUT, there is another side and most people are generally good. Everyday people do kind, generous, helpful things, for their neighbours, in the community and occasionally for complete strangers. People give up their time to volunteer to support charities, to offer activities for young people or do kind things for others. In December we received an email from Pam Housley who wanted to thank a stranger who came to the aid of her elderly mother. The full email is shown below.

When we received the message it made us feel more positive about the community we live in. Remember how the news used to feature a happy story at the end before sharing the weather forecast? This message was the equivalent. S40 Local can share more positivity. Have you any thanks to share? Has someone stopped to help you, do you know someone doing something positive locally? Did someone return your pet, credit card, purse, key or done something kind and generous? "If you are able, then I would be very grateful if you could include a huge thank you to the very kind person who stopped to help my mum last night. My mum lives close to the shops in Walton and at 10pm last night the wind had blown over her black bin which had been put out ready for collection the next morning. The contents were blowing around and the bin needed to be pulled back up to standing. As my mum was picking up the rubbish a man who was driving by took the trouble to turn his car around and come back to help her to sort out the bin and its contents. He then insisted on ensuring that he escorted her back up the icy drive and left her in safety at her front door. We don't know the name of the kind stranger but would like him to know how very grateful we are for his kindness, thank you so very much. My mum was very touched that someone completely unknown to her would stop and take the trouble to help her in what wasn't exactly a pleasant task. I hope that the kind person is also a reader of S40 Local so that they will know how much their kindness was appreciated."

Ashgate Hospicecare: £103,025 Grant

Whitecotes Playing Field

Ashgate Hospicecare is thrilled to receive a generous grant from the Westfield Health Charitable Trust.

The money will be used to create a beautiful garden room and dementia friendly courtyard for patients, families and visitors, to ensure there is a space where families can make positive memories and remember their lives together. Graham Moore, Chairman of the Westfield Health Charitable Trust, said: “It is a pleasure to be funding the improvements on the Inpatient Unit at Ashgate Hospicecare. Karen Walker, Ward Manager of the Inpatient Unit at Ashgate Hospicecare, said: “We are really proud of our ‘Outstanding’ rating from the Care Quality Commission for our care. The wonderful grant from Westfield Health means that we will have an outstanding area to match that care.” In 2015, Ashgate Hospicecare achieved an overall rating of ‘Outstanding’ from the Care Quality Commission. The report showed the Hospice provides high quality, safe and innovative care and that patients, their relatives and carers were highly complimentary and satisfied with the care given, which they often described as excellent, exceptional or outstanding.

Chatsworth Road Medical Centre PPG Update: Five Ways to Wellbeing ‘Five Ways to Wellbeing’ is a major initiative aimed at helping people improve their wellbeing. It covers, Be Active, Keep Learning, Connect, Take Notice and Give – details are displayed on the PPG Notice Board at the Chastworth Road Medical Centre. Are you aware of the ways patients can access facilities for health and wellbeing? Locally there is a focus on people affected by mental health issues. Health, Wealth and Wellbeing days, are special days with lunch and entertainment to help combat loneliness and isolation and 'Time for You Cafes' run days where special facilities such as free head massages are given to encourage people to visit and find out more about Wellbeing services. Many of you may know the lovely green open space adjacent to Boythorpe Cemetery as ‘Foolow Field’ or ‘the cow field’. At the moment there is only a small playground there badly in need of refurbishment. It is now known as Whitecotes Playing Field and the ‘Friends of’ group chaired by local councillor Keith Falconer was set up on 1st Aug 16. After consultation with the local community we adopted aims to secure its long-term future which would improve the facilities there while at the same time protecting the wildlife and preserving the countryside feel of the place that so many enjoy. The Friends have been awarded £10,000 by the Big Lottery’s Awards For All which will be spent on improving access for the disabled, purchasing some sports equipment and also providing some seats which will be placed to take best advantage of the lovely panoramic views seen from the field. This work will be initiated as soon as weather permits. We had great news in December being awarded over £48,000 from the recycling Company Viridor Credits. This will enable us to provide much needed play equipment for older children, a trail circuit involving balance for younger children and improvements to the existing playground: a new surface, an inclusive roundabout and self-shutting gate... plus more seats for the field. In 2018 we will apply for more funding to install paths all across the field linking the entrances making it a more inclusive, accessible place. We are indebted to the Woodland Trust who have donated 60 saplings which have been planted along with spring bulbs with the help of a council ranger, committee members and members of the local community. We have installed two noticeboards, one at Hucklow Avenue and the other at Hazel Drive purchased with a grant from Derbyshire County Council’s Community Leadership Scheme with the help of councillor Ron Mihaly. 16 for 2018 Destination Chesterfield Manager takes on Sixteen Challenges in 2018 for the Alzheimer’s Society Tupton resident, Dom Stevens is set to complete sixteen challenges in 2018 for the Alzheimer’s Society and aims to raise at least £1807 throughout the year.

Chesterfield's First Tuneless Choir Chesterfield Tuneless Choir bursts into song for the very first time this winter for an evening of shackles-off, joyfully liberated, singing. Over 50 people have already joined and more are keen to try this new nationwide phenomenon. The choir, organised by local health-worker Amanda Higginbotham (pictured below left), launched with music teacher Karen Cook (pictured below right) as choir leader. Amanda loves singing but admits she doesn’t have a tuneful voice and Karen runs a couple of singing groups. Together they are looking forward to welcoming people and having fun... no previous singing experience is required. The choir, based at the historic Elder Yard Unitarian Chapel, Elder Way, Chesterfield, S40 1UR, welcomes people of all religions or none, to sing a wide range of songs, everything from old crooners to Adele, via classics from the likes of Abba and Queen.

The first four challenges started on the 1st of January with Dom giving up alcohol, caffeine, cheese and crisps for 12 months. The sixteen challenges include Dom’s first skydive, a marathon, obstacle races and many more. One because of the memories of my grandma, and the difficulties she experienced with dementia in later life. She now requires full time care at such a young age.” “Along the way I will be joined on these challenges by friends, family and colleagues, thank you to them all for sparing their time to join me.” “Anything we can do to support research in to this condition and support people with dementia and their families is a really worthy cause.” Jeremy Hughes, Chief Executive at Alzheimer’s Society, said: We are delighted that Dom is giving his time to support Alzheimer’s Society. inter is the time to reflect on last season’s harvests. Consider which fruit and vegetables performed well and also those that were a disappointment. Think of what will be grown again and also if a new approach to growing a particular fruit or vegetable is required. Should you be trying something new or perhaps selecting a different variety for the forthcoming growing season? This is the time of year to plan for next, with seed and nursery catalogues. Don’t be over-ambitious though – only plan for plants where there’s space, or steal yourself to removing under-performing ones (or dig them out on a nice day, which will allow time for the soil to settle before spring). If you have a pond with fish in it, make sure it never freezes over completely (but don’t break ice by hitting it, which may well hurt the fish); a rubber ball can be floated in it to make a hole to allow access to oxygen. Keep an eye on any stored produce, bulbs and tubers to make sure the mice haven’t found them. Hanging them in a sack is usually a good way of both storing and protecting them, but remember that mice are amazing climbers. This is the time to give your pots and trays a thorough clean to get rid of any over-wintering pests and diseases. If you have a greenhouse or frames a good clean of the glass, frames and floor will mean that you can get off to a good start in March when it is time to really get started sowing your seeds for this season. If it snows heavily, knock it off or gently shake branches to prevent them breaking under the weight. Try not to stand underneath while you do this… Check to see if any paths, fences etc. need routine maintenance, and prepare to do it on any nice sunny, dry days.
