Christmas

'Trust me on the sunscreen' Time to switch off all devices, put on your shoes and shop locally this Christmas Words: Paul Chapman

B

az Luhrmann penned a classic in 1999, taking the words from a hypothetical commencement speech by columnist Mary Schmich, originally published in June 1997 in the Chicago Tribune. The essay, giving various pieces of advice on how to live a happier life and avoid common frustrations, spread massively via viral email.*

Personal Training Get fighting fit with Jade Ashmore. One to one and group sessions from £3.

West Studios Shop Selling locally made gifts, cards and jewellery. Knitted wire bracelet by Hannah Watson £35.

Nathan Wall (Pop-Up Restaurant) Date night at The Society of Coffee Shop with Nathan Wall top Chef.

Helen Rowan Photography Christmas Gift Vouchers for Beginner Workshops and Helen's fabulous 2020 Photo Sessions.

StraightCurves Specialist 1:1 Tuition. Got a crafty friend and no idea what to get them? One-to-one tuition, learn at their own pace. From £25.

E. Hagg Jewellers A wide range of items from fine jewellery to classic timeless watches form a local independent business.

The Three Cottages Book and pay for a slap up meal with John and Nicky at the Three Cottages.

Twisted Spire Yoga Improve the mind, body and soul by joining Dave West's yoga sessions.

Torne Valley Is your loved one in need of the perfect garden power tool? Tools to cover all jobs from blowing leaves to cutting up logs.

What's he on about now, what's this got to do with anything? I can almost hear the groans!

The last line 'But trust me on the sunscreen', is how I feel about 'shopping locally'. I feel I use the phrase repeatedly, I try and encourage those around me to do the same and through S40 and S41 Local we try and point you to some great local independent businesses run by the very people who might just live on your street. Yet again Christmas approaches and I make no apologies for repeating the text below. Christmas is on the horizon and with it a shopping list of gifts for family and friends. To fulfil your present buying objectives you could go online and await delivery to your door.

* Source wikipedia

Alternatively, you could spend your money locally this Christmas at a small independent business. There's a chance that the business owner or maker will take your money and spend it in another community shop or cafe... and then the next business owner will do the same thing, keeping the money in Chesterfield and benefiting our local economy. Or yes, you could spend it in a chain store and some faceless shareholder somewhere in the world will add the amount to their fortune and it has no impact on our community's economy. I know shopping local takes more time and effort but if you need convincing or you'd like to see how this works, check out 'Tale of a Tenner' on YouTube (quick code below), it's inspiring - and not just because of the cyclists!

Page 6

This edition and next we'll be including some great ideas for gifts and we'll also suggest some great services so people don't end up regifting that 'thing' they didn't want or need, perhaps helping the planet a little. See adverts for more details, contact numbers and addresses.

And ... if you're a local business reading this and want something in December give us a call, it'll only cost you an advert. Last thing ... tell them S40 & S41 Local sent you! www.s41local.com

CHRISTMAS IN

CHESTERFIELD

C

hristmas is coming and it’s coming to Chesterfield in style this year, with a plethora of independent retailers, restaurants, bars, cafes and events to get you and all your family in the festive mood.

Festive events in the town centre kick off on Saturday 16 November with the start of the much-loved Christmas Tree Festival at the famous ‘Crooked Spire’ church. Last year there were more than 100 Christmas trees, decorated by local community groups, charities and retailers, on display in all their festive glory. This year there will be even more stunning Christmas trees on display for the two-week festival which ends on Sunday 1 December. Admission is free but donations to the church are always gratefully accepted. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas in Chesterfield however without the annual lights switch on.

On Sunday 17 November presenters from Peak FM will be joined by the stars of this year’s pantomime at the Pomegranate Theatre, Jack and the Beanstalk, as well as the Mayor and Mayoress of Chesterfield, Santa and Peter Rabbit, to do the grand lights switch on at 4.45pm. This year promises to be bigger and better than ever, with entertainment starting at 12 noon in the Market Place with of stalls, games and rides.

And when Santa finishes the Christmas lights switch on, he’ll be taking up residence in his grotto in Chesterfield Market Hall until Christmas Eve. Page 16

Santa will also be enjoying trips on the John Varley boat on Chesterfield Canal. And you can enjoy a trip with him on Santa Special Cruises running every Saturday and Sunday from 23 November to 22 December and on Monday 23 December from Tapton Lock. Make the most of your visit to Santa’s grotto to check out Chesterfield’s shops, stores and market stalls. With new stores opening regularly, like Shop Indie and Rate Cute on Vicar Lane, Chesterfield is guaranteed to have a perfect Christmas gift for all your friends and family including the foodies! Chesterfield is brimming with local produce. Cheese lovers should head to R P Davidson Cheese Factor which boasts around 150 cheeses. For tea and coffee, it has to be Northern Tea Merchants, while Brampton Brewery is the place to go for real ales. You can also sample their ales at pubs in and around Chesterfield, including the Rose & Crown in Brampton and The Glass Works on Sheffield Road. If cocktails and wine are more your thing this Christmas, then head to Chesterfield’s 2018 Restaurant of the Year Bottle & Thyme.

Whatever your taste, Chesterfield has something to suit you. Save the petrol, miles and stress and shop, eat and drink local this Christmas in Chesterfield.

inding financial advice that you can trust is a tricky business, and quite often the decision is put on the ‘too difficult list’ or very often, left too late.

Milestone Financial Planning is a local independent business, keen to extend their present client base and with over 50 years combined experience are well placed to offer advice for your circumstances. The team consists of eight people, all are Chesterfield based and the picture shows left to right, Charlotte Pearce (Finance Manager/Administration) Nick Evans (Financial Planner), Jake Bennett (Technical Administrator), Peter Blant (Financial Planner), Craig Croft-Rayner (Financial Planner), Joanne Ali (Client Service Manager/Administration) and seated, husband and wife, Michael (Managing Director) and Jo Heath (Operations Director).

The business has grown rapidly to support the demand for high quality advice and the team brings with them a wealth (important to a Financial Planner) of experience and knowledge, plus backgrounds in stock broking, law and large financial corporates.

MD, Michael Heath trained as a stockbroker and later worked in a national advisory firm before Milestone was formed. He explains, “I saw a gap in the market for a totally independent advice service. Personal contact can get lost in larger companies and I wanted to offer a local, personal and bespoke service”. “Milestone Financial Planning offers a single point of contact for people, creating a service that’s based around individual needs at specific points in life’s journey.

“Throughout life, we have difficult and complex financial decisions to make as circumstances change. We offer clear advice at these decision points; our role is to be with you for the long term ensuring we deliver a plan that’s in line with your needs.” The name Milestone emerged from their commitment to this approach. “We help people who want to plan for and protect their future. This can range from pension planning, to investments and inheritance tax planning” Peter explains. Page 18

“Our Unique Selling Point is our independence; we have no ties or links to any other Financial Institution. This gives us total flexibility to offer a truly bespoke service. Being of modest size allows us to be agile, act quickly and deliver a costeffective professional service to our clients. “We have relationships with local accountants and solicitors and through this can offer an end-to-end service, so there is no need to send people off to do their own leg work, we can do it for them. “Today’s financial climate is challenging, the industry is changing, politics are impacting decisions, the superstar fund managers of the past no longer exist, banks and building societies are pulling back their financial advice services, and businesses like ours need to change and adapt to stay ahead.”

Michael adds, “At Milestone, we like to keep customers informed, to give them the opportunity to gain confidence, build trust and become more engaged and involved in their own finances.” “At important and volatile times like this, where we have Brexit on the horizon and seemingly no end to the US/China trade wars, it is vital we stay in touch with customers” says Peter. “It’s about relationships, developing trust, regular reviews, consistent results and supporting people when life demands it - we’re in it for the long term.” Based at Dunston, the office is modern and relaxed, with parking outside the door for clients. The team know every client, go above and beyond expectation and always deliver the highest standards of service . Michael says, “It’s important that the team know the journey that individual clients are on. At the end of the day, we want our clients to sleep easy at night, safe in the knowledge their investments are at the centre of everything we do”

Challenges for charity Words: Bekah Anstey Images: Gavin Holmes

I

’ve known this month’s local hero for many years but never really ‘known’ him. I’m pleased to say that now after a lot of Facebook stalking, I probably know him better than he knows himself. This month’s Local Hero is the one and only fitness fanatic, expert spinner and Chesterfield’s No 1 runner. Let me introduce you to Gavin Holmes! Gavin is a fitness guru with a difference, he turns fitness into fun and engaging social time that clearly keeps people going back for more. He’s a former education director that puts his teaching experience into developing Chesterfields finest gym goers.

Gavin has really upped his game this year when it comes to charity fundraising, his most recent commitment was to raise funds for JDRF – improving lives, curing type 1 diabetes. This charity is very close to his heart as his nephew Archie has been diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

too late!

To quote a few huge supporters:

organise your...

Matt- ‘Gav is an absolute weapon and a true character of showing up and doing what needs to be done’ Chris – ‘No words can convey the effort you put in, total respect for you and your team’ Louise – Archie is an absolute star and so are you for supporting such a great charity. C

Gavin you’re a true inspiration for your charity work but also your mindset and determination when it comes to fitness. It’s a pleasure to be able to share your hard work with our S41 community. To donate to Gavin's cause please go to:

http://bit.ly/GAVSCHALLENGE

Gavin has organised and taken part in many events such as a 100mile ultra-marathon (pushing Gavin’s competitive streak to the max!), a 3-hour space themed spin that looked fantastic, a 3.5-hour 26 mile treadmill ‘monsterthon’ and not forgetting a mile of burpees at Stand Road!! Gavin has documented his challenges which makes for a very interesting read – I especially liked the bit where Gavin was hallucinating and thought that a group of bushes around a bus stop were kids up to no good sat on the floor, you can follow his diary at www.velocityrunning.wordpress. com. One of the things I really like about Gavin is that when he fundraises, he doesn’t just do the challenges himself, he involves the local community. He has a following that really support him with raising money and physically being there to help motivate and inspire.

News It's All Happening At The Old Grammar School

Titanic - Refloated

Annual Remembrance Service 2019: Organised by the Old Cestrefeldians' (OC) Trust, takes place at the Old Grammar School, Sheffield Road, Monday 11 November at 10.45am, the service will be conducted by our fellow OC, the Right Rev. Bill Godfrey, the former Bishop of Peru, seen below left with the Archbishop of Canterbury.

More than 100 years since its sinking, RMS Titanic is being refloated by Chesterfield Operatic Society at the Pomegranate Theatre.

Compassionate & Caring When Harold Liilleker & Sons are trusted with your loved one this is how we do things. When a loved one passes away, your world turns upside down. During this time of grief, you need a compassionate helping hand that can take care of the funeral arrangements and help you bid a final goodbye to your dear one with respect and love.

On her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York, the “unsinkable ship” slowly sank after hitting an iceberg. It was one of the most tragic disasters of the 20th Century in which 1,517 people, young and old lost their lives.

Based on real people, Titanic The Musical is a stunning and moving production, focusing on the hopes, dreams and aspirations of her passengers who each boarded with stories and personal ambitions of their own.

It will include readings of war poems and a special dedication to OC brothers, 'Jock' and Billy Wilson, who died while serving in the RAF during WW2. We will also have The Last Post played before the two minutes silence at 11am. Descendants of any OCs who gave their lives in the service of their country are also cordially invited.

There will be time afterwards to catch up with old friends over a cup of coffee. Trust membership forms will be available, if you wish to support our future activities.

Copies of Philip Riden's book A History of Chesterfield Grammar School will also be available for sale on the day price £35. Cash or cheque only. OCs ties will also be available at £10 each.

Exhibition - The Boys Are Back In School: In the 425th year since we were founded, and in conjunction with the Sheffield Road West Studios, we have also arranged a small exhibition of Chesterfield School artefacts and memorabilia. This will take place in the Gallery area and run from Monday 11 November to Friday 13 December. Opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am to 4pm and Saturday 10am to 1pm. Tea/coffee available while you browse. Offers of items of interest are invited. Please email Frank at frankdukes70@aol.com. Page 24

Operatic society chair Sarah Morrell, who plays the role of aspiring middleaged American Alice Beane, says the musical is full of stunning music. “While the story is one of tragedy,” she said, “the musical itself tells the story of the passengers’ hopes of a new life in America. With a cast of nearly 50, I am sure audiences will love this dramatic production.” Directed by Carole Copeland, Nick Stacey as musical director and Alison Doram as choreographer, Titanic sails at the Pomegranate from November 20 to 23 with a Saturday matinee. Early bird tickets (£16) are available from chesterfieldoperaticsociety.com or £17.40 when the theatre box office opens on October 31.

Commemorating William E Glister: The Trust has also commissioned a brass plaque to commemorate the outstanding headship of W.E.Glister (affectionately known as 'The Boss) from 1947 to 1968, which will be placed on the wall immediately outside his former study at Sheffield Road. It will join the plaques to other previous Heads and, very appropriately, will be unveiled at around 11.30am by Ms Sheila Glister, the Head's daughter, who is now in her 80s and lives in Sheffield.

he number one ingredient every Chef needs to create the finest cuisine is passion, something Nathan Wall isn’t short of. His passion and talent haven't gone unrecognised, his catering career spans from Michelin to Rosette level across Derbyshire! He is a Chef with a mission, a vision and ambition…so, when he messaged us at S41 we couldn’t wait to interview him to find out about his latest Chesterfield based venture ‘fun dining’. SP: Nathan, let’s pretend we haven’t met previously, and I know nothing about your latest venture! So, what’s this new, exciting mission you are on?

NW: I have launched a new pop up restaurant at the Society of Coffee on Stephenson’s place called ‘Restaurant Artichoke’. SP: One of the finest coffee shops in the world may I add! NW: I completely agree! I’m on a mission to offer the same high standard of food on offer at a fine dining restaurant, but with a more relaxed approach. It’s more like eating at a pub where you can just relax and chill, but also have the same quality that you would expect from a Michelin Starred restaurant, just without the price tag! SP: So, accessible fine dining, but in a cool little establishment… NW: Yes, fun dining not fine dining. Fun dining is something that is being thrown around recently in a few restaurants and I think it has a nice message and a great title for this article! SP: Agreed. Your dishes are weird and wonderful combinations. Where do you draw your inspiration from? NW: The inspiration comes from the ingredients themselves. I love going foraging for food in our local area. I like to break down the ingredients further and look at it from a different perspective. I challenge myself to come up with a dish that people aren’t doing or simply haven’t thought of yet.

Page 26

SP: I know you can be creating a dish for up to weeks at a time, tell me about your most weird and wonderful dish, one that really sticks in your mind… NW: I did a scallop dish on the last pop-up; the sauce took four weeks to create! It started with, well, I have a bit of an obsession with the root vegetable celeriac. It has pretty much been on the menu of every pop-up I have held. I juiced the vegetable to begin with and slowly started to ferment it, I took the weight of the juice and added two percent salt. I placed it on the windowsill and tasted it daily, to see what the flavours were doing and where it was heading. The day before the pop-up I took it off the windowsill and created the sauce with the juice, which was wild! It went down enormously well with diners and they loved the story behind the dish. I personally serve all my dishes and tell the narrative of how they came to be…I feel the story of a dish’s creation is just as important as the appearance and taste, this gets lost in many restaurants. SP: This is a major part of your unique selling point, because not only do you cook the dish’s, but you serve them and speak passionately about the story behind the flavours. NW: I really enjoy the part where I mingle with diners and give them a glimpse into how my creative brain works…I give as much detail as I possibly can. SP: So, at each pop-up you serve five courses? NW: I serve five courses and each dish has four elements. There may only be four elements, but by keeping it simple I am able to create something quite magical. If I have anything left from the pop-up, I take it home and completely transform it again, making a whole new dish! Nathan's next Artichoke Pop-up Restaruarant is on the:

An afternoon off! If you can 'spa' the time

Words & Images: Jennie Sim

W

hen someone asks me what I do to relax I struggle to answer.

Two businesses and a busy household with mum's taxi service to various clubs most nights relaxing isn’t an option… if there are five free minutes in my day, I fill it with something other than on myself! The secret ingredient to relaxing is good company... or so I am told. My very good friend Rachel’s birthday was coming up and like me she had been nonstop working and juggling what life throws at her, so we decided enough was enough, a catch up was needed - some quality time together was long overdue. Our day started at The Eating House Calver for brunch, a small stone-built café that if you blink you could miss on your way into the peaks. As soon as you enter this quaint hidden gem of an eatery the smell hits you of baked goods mixed with the sweetness of cakes and the rich aroma of fresh coffee. The menu is fabulous with a vast array of yummy cakes also catering for those following a Vegan and Coeliac diet. It’s such a lovely day we opt for takeout and head off on our journey to visit Treak Cliff Cavern. You can take the cave tour for starting at Treak Cliff Cavern in Castleton and expect a 60 – 90-minute adventure for £15. The tour guides are super animated and really keep your interest

Page 28

with the highlight polishing your own piece of Blue John. After the 90-minute tour there is only one thing on our mind… bubbles… In the form of a hot tub and Prosecco – double bubble.

Off to our final destination we head through the village of Hope which is as picturesque as it sounds and has a beautiful gift shop, florist and a few other quaint village shops well worth a visit. We have pre booked the twilight spa package at Losehill House hotel and Spa, Edale Rd, Hope Valley, for £60.00 you get use of the Spa between 4 and 8pm with robes, towel and slippers provided a three course meal in the restaurant and a pot of fresh coffee on arrival, a pretty sweet deal! As soon as we enter the venue we are greeted wonderfully by the receptionist, we instantly feel at home and are soon relaxing in the comfy armchairs in the lounge enjoying our cafetière of coffee. Our next stop the Spa and we head straight to the hot tub situated outside with the incredible view of the Peak District countryside. Of course, we had a glass of fizz whilst talking nonstop… in fact I am surprised we had time to drink – who am I kidding!

Our order is taken in the lounge and canapés are bought over before we are shown to our table. The food, service, attention to detail is second to none, this is truly fine dining at its best! No detail is spared with my vegan menu from canapés to the little sweets bought out after our dessert. I ordered the broccoli soup which included a broccoli floret in scrumptious light batter, mains were a roast onion tartlet and dessert a coconut panacotta. The waiters and waitresses were extremely knowledgeable answering queries

before I had even asked them, the service quality and attentiveness just right. You can eat in the restaurant without the spa…but why would you? My advice – treat yourself and find out what it means to truly relax whilst taking in the beautiful Peak District.

The pool is indoor and heated and what’s great is after using the hot tub the pool is a temperature that doesn’t make you jump out of your skin when climbing back in. We do a lap or two of the pool, sauna, steam room and back to the hot tub then decide we are suitably relaxed and more to the point starving!

Cover Artist

The Art of Running Meet cover artist Dave Elsom Words: Annie French Images: Dave Elsom

T

he artist Dave Elsom recently had his first solo exhibition at West Studios, and I was fortunate enough to have spent some time with him discussing Art and running, interests that we both have in common. Dave told me that as a child he was always drawing and doodling, creating cartoons and comic books. His mum tried to encourage him by taking him on a visit to the Winchester School of Art.

‘That was my idea of hell, with all those posh kids. That’s the thing with art, it’s perceived as a middle-class thing when you look at the price of paintings, and it’s only for those who can afford them. The magic for me is when you get a street artist who is recognised as a legitimate artist. People like Phlegm who exhibited in Sheffield, this was one of the best exhibitions that I have ever been to” AF: How did you get back into art as an adult? DE: It was when my daughter was really young, her drawings were incredible. It got me thinking about my own drawings. I went to night school at Hillsborough College and signed up for a drawing and painting course. I felt like a fish out of water in the first three weeks, I was doing what I had been taught at school, tiny life-like drawings. Then my tutor got hold of my hand and made me draw really big circles and got me drawing really loosely. At the end of the ten weeks, I had really come on and with her encouragement I signed up for another course doing graphic design. Unfortunately, the college could not get enough students to run that course, but had places on their print making course. I loved it from the start and continued onto a second ten-week block. Like many colleges, with funding being cut for adult learners, the course came to an end. AF: So how did the running theme start? DE: Running has been my refuge from the world, I have struggled with mental health and depression. One of my problems is that I cannot switch my brain off, everyone I know who is

Page 30

creative has the same problem, it the price you pay. Running has been my go-to, if I’m having a particularly bad time, it’s not always easy to go out and run, but I always feel the benefits when I do. I have also had the support from Ian and Baz at Art and Minds, based in Killamarsh. I now help out at the centre as much as I can.

gave me loads of encouragement. It’s another refuge for me, at weekends when I have my daughter we go in and have cup of tea and a chat, mess around with my artwork. Ian is one in a million, he’s worth more than ten doctors, I just love what they do and all the support they give to people.

Dave runs with the Clowne running club and runs most Saturday mornings at the Rother Valley park run. The theme of his recent exhibition at West Studios was mainly running. With a combination of lino cut prints and photography. Dave’s experimental style is quite obvious with his silhouetted photographs of runners and typography layered over them, using quotes of fellow runners describing what running means to them.

Talking to Dave has been an absolute pleasure, he has restored my faith in the Art World as it’s not all about exhibitions and making money. We have so many wonderful organisations and talented creative people in our town, they should be celebrated and recognised. If you have an art storey and would like a cuppa and a chat, please contact us at S41 Local.

DE: What I really like about running is finding the rhythm of your breathing and the meditative thud from your shoes. Art provides a similar feeling, so I wanted to combine the two. Confidence comes from experimenting with my art, this has influenced my running challenges that I have taken on. I completed a couple of marathons and now enter ultra-events, last year I did a 24-hour race. I wouldn’t have had the confidence to do these things a few years ago.

Dave Elsom contact details: Sombrero_ printmaking Sombrero_ printmaking davidjelsom@hotmail.com

Art & Minds is a not for profit organisation based at 43 Bridge Street, Killamarsh, Sheffield, S21 1AH

AF: So, you have survived your first solo exhibition and an ultra-marathon, what next? DE: I want to continue with the running theme, people appear to like that. I like the idea of getting the message out there about the benefits of running, so if I can do that through my art everyone wins. I need to work full time as my artwork doesn’t pay the bills, so I run the occasional weekend workshops at West Studios. I want to develop my Etsy shop, but any sales just go back into buying new materials. AF: You’ve mentioned Art and Minds, how did you get involved with them? DE: I donated an old CD rack which I thought would be useful for an art project, we got chatting and they followed me on Instagram and

his month sees another busy, but very inspiring month, it is the start of the Young Enterprise Company Programme Competition. I have the pleasure of working with 25 fantastic schools, each have a team of students that are going to run a business. It’s the best job in the world! I’m hoping they will get Derbyshire to the UK Finals in London. No pressure! The student’s motivation and ideas really inspire me and give me hope that Derbyshire is producing some fab budding entrepreneurs. I attended an event at The County Music Bar called Musicians Against Homelessness – Chesterfield Rocks! I can safely say I had the time of my life. The music was amazing, beer was flowing, and I got to talk to lots of people about who they were supporting that evening. It was fantastic! They raised over £1,000 and lots of awareness for the charity.

I also had the pleasure of being invited to the Acorn Roots gig at St Leonards Church, Spital. They were fantastic and the hospitality was superb as always! If you haven't attended a Spital Arts event yet you need to add this to your list of to do's, they are always put together so well and they really make you feel so welcome. The venue is also very beautiful and the acoustics are amazing!

I’ve enjoyed helping Eva to learn her lines for a production she will be in very soon, she has performed before but only ever for singing so learning lines has been great fun. I’m hoping this will be the start of her amazing acting career! Thanks Jessica Widdowson! I’m super happy that Autumn is here, I can wear big baggy jumpers, go on muddy walks and drink lots of hot chocolate. I love to see the seasons change and Autumn is my favourite! So, light those Yankee Candles (warm cashmere is my current scent) get the marshmallows in your hot choc and get your dressing gown on by 5pm (earlier if you can). This month I’m going to do things that are good for my soul and make me happy, that means more time in the countryside with my family.

You may notice a lack of Simons blog this edition, we've had a busy month and unfortunately couldn't squeeze him in! He'll be back soon! Peace, love and positivity

Chesterfield Freemasons Welcoming and charitable Words: Bekah Anstey Images: The Freemasons

I

was offered the chance to go and have a nosey around the newly refurbished Chesterfield Masonic Hall, home of the Chesterfield Freemasons. I didn’t have a clue what to think before I arrived, but I was looking forward to seeing inside a building that had been around long before my time and learning more about the history of The Freemasons. I was greeted by the lovely Malcolm Smith – the architect involved in the planning and facilitating of all the fantastic renovations. The building is a modern but still a very traditional space with an abundance of character and charm. The work they have completed over the years has really added value to the space and made it a welcoming venue for events and meetings. Malcolm talked me through all the support they have given our community and I was overwhelmed. I had no idea what The Freemasons did! There’s a huge amount of local charitable giving that takes place, including supporting Ashgate Hospice, Fairplay, Chesterfield Boy Scouts, The RAF, Umbrella, The Bus Stop Cafe and many local churches. On top of this they give to national charities and have a pledge of supporting larger charities, they gave over 2 million pounds at the last national festival they ran. Great job!

Chesterfield Freemasons

With all the awareness about mental health and having a safe space to go to, I feel The Freemasons is possibly that safe space for a lot of local good men. It offers community spirit, support to each other and a sense of belonging. That’s a fantastic thing in my book! I asked Malcolm what the Freemasons meant to him and he said

Development

Chesterfield.

There's a lot going on you know.

Each year Destination Chesterfield arranges an Investment Summit, this year hosted at Casa Hotel, where developers, businesses and investors gathered to hear the latest updates on progress in Chesterfield. And there’s a lot happening.

The Avenue (Mark Johns)

At the end of the article there are links to various videos and related pages.

The former Avenue Coking Works has seen a massive clean-up operation and the new development by Kier Living delivers housing with a contemporary, open plan feel with a hint to the site's industrial past. The Phase 1 build is in progress, with a release of 252 properties, and future phases taking housing numbers to 469. It also includes commercial units and a school.

Derbyshire’s largest regeneration project established as a result of the decline of heavy industry. This £250m development, includes 200 hectares of trails, woodlands, enhanced wildlife sites and is fronted by a two-mile industrial area along the M1.

So far, 52 new companies are based on the site, creating 2,236 new jobs. This already exceeds the number employed at the colliery during its height of operation, the end target is 4,100 jobs. To the north side of the motorway, most businesses have been on site for 12 to 18 months and are already expanding. This is great news for Chesterfield, as although businesses may not be local, they employ skilled people from the immediate area to work in the warehouses, distribution centres, factories and offices.

Social Media is the primary tool for filling vacancies. The days of browsing at the job centre have long gone. There are a typically 20 to 25 jobs posted per week at Markham Vale. FB: jobs at markham vale Twitter: @markhamvalejobs

To help fill these roles, Markham Vale has its own training facility at the Environment Centre where 1500 people have attended training courses in the past 12 months. Markham Vale is also keen to remember its mining heritage and markhamstorymine. org commemoratives the sad death of 106 miners killed in Markham Tragedies in 1937, 38 and 73. Page 36

Chesterfield Borough Council (Huw Bowen) In a whistle stop round up of developments across the Borough, Huw Bowen (Chief Executive Chesterfield Borough Council) brought us up to date on a number of projects.

Chesterfield HS2: HS2 is over budget and running late, however it continues to move forward and will bring future economic benefits and jobs.

The Northern Gateway

Markham Vale (Peter Storey)

The brownfield site on the way to Clay Cross is a prime location for future development and Kier Living have created ‘a new development which blends in sympathetically with its surroundings whilst having a genuine sense of place’.

Check out the new video by Whitham Cox Architects (see link) that shows how the walk from the station into town could look, framing the spire, dare I suggest it, almost like a mini Sheffield. The delivery of HS2 will also bring about a depot for Staveley, where Talgo, a rail innovator, will be based, creating 250 jobs and development of the Staveley corridor with 750 homes, a school and creating a new community.

Chesterfield Waterside: Avant Homes has acquired the land at the old Arnold Laver site for the development of 177 two, three and fourbedroom homes, with the first homes expected to be released for sale later this year. The development will also include a seven storey office building (planning secured) which will bring in new businesses and investors, who want to be based on the doorstep of the station.

Development Northern Gateway: The new Premier Inn is now fully open and developers Jomast are searching out tenants for the ground floors. The new multistory car park is open for business, we all have our views on it‌ I like it.

The scheme is also delivering a new Enterprise Centre on the old ‘donut’ car park, with work starting on site very soon, “we’ve had a look and haven’t found any old kings laughs Huw. Once complete, and with street layout changes to Elder Way will deliver a whole new look and feel to the Northern entry to town.

Others: David Lloyd Leisure has submitted plans for Adrenaline World, Phase 1 of Peak Resort, The Glass Yard leisure and retail development has been approved on Sheffield Road (similar to the development at 131 Chatsworth Road), Vicar Lane will be installing a new LED screen to support events at the amphitheater junction, outside H&M. “All these projects are helping revitalise our town, Chesterfield is a great place in which to live and work, your money buys a bit more house here, our average price is ÂŁ184k as opposed to ÂŁ220k across the countryâ€? adds Huw. “The plans to boost town centre living plans are in progress, the old bank in New Square, and McCarthy Stone are due to redevelop the old North East Derbyshire County Council offices as retirement apartments.â€?

“Commercial demand for the town continues to grow, we’ve already received 400 enquires this year alone. Our great location with sites at Markham Vale, the proximity to Peak District, good quality housing, employment availability that’s supported by training opportunities at Chesterfield College and Derby University, gives us a great future. Yes, we have problems, but development and job creation ensure our town's doing well."

Skilling for investment: (Mark Warrilow, HS2 and David Higham, Chesterfield College)

Chesterfield College have been working with young and older people, skilling them for the opportunities being created. The Premier Inn saw 20 people trained exclusively for the jobs available. The college continues to retrain the older generation preparing them for roles in the public sector in hospital, nursing, support and social care. HS2 opportunities will exist for plant operators, civil engineers and apprenticeships in the supply change. The developments hope to inspire young people and show them what happens inside businesses, and give them insight into interesting jobs available, perhaps opening their eyes to roles they didn’t know existed. Page 38

Polly Barnfield OBE (CEO Maybe*) The patent-pending Maybe* platform uses AI (Artificial Intelligence) to help organisations listen and engage with their customers through social media, benchmark their results, and optimise the ROI of their activity. Polly has been working with Vicar Lane looking at how they can use social media to increase footfall and sales.

“In 2019 we started looking at our devices more than watching our TVs, an active social media user spends 136 minutes each day scrolling through 300ft of posts Polly informs us. “National retailers are all using social media to point people at their websites, the ‘What Do You Think Campaign (#WDYT) has been a huge success.

Polly showed a video clip (link below) that demonstrated how a small independent, footwear retailer in Cheltenham has seen a 39% increase in sales as a direct result of social media use. Please visit the links below to find out more about Maybe* and what it can do.

At a personal level I struggled with this part of the day. The instant hit creates a reactive response to the post, ‘I want one of those’ etc. but does the recipient actually need it? Last month we talked about avoid, reduce, reuse, recycle, whilst I fully understand the need for businesses to be successful, should we carefully consider purchases? It’s a balance, and one I hope we can reach so we have a thriving successful high street but one with a sustainability ethos that supports it.

ÂŁ

I’ll leave that with you.

Cllr Tony King (Derbyshire County Council) Tony wrapped up the day with a few short words to say “Derbyshire is a fabulous place to live work and visit, I can’t agree more. After the morning I went away with a few questions, a few actions and a firm desire to help all the presenters get more people into our town centre. There are many small business owners putting their energy and money into town and trying to make a go of things, and it’s our job to support them and step across the threshold. #shoplocal

Garden Tips

November Garden Tips Words: Inspire Community Garden Picture: Robert Nixon Betts

If you have been organised enough to order bare-rooted trees or shrubs (local nurseries may have some, although the varieties will be limited), they should be delivered sometime this month. Plant them out as soon as possible – it is essential the roots don't dry out, so if you have to keep them for a few days, wrap them in some old sacking or something similar, and (very important) keep them out of the wind.

Prune established apple and pear trees; this can be done any time between leaf fall and buds bursting but early winter days are more likely to be mild and pleasant. Aim for an open, wine-glass shape, to allow air to circulate and fruit to form where it will receive maximum light.

Many perennials should now be cut down to ground level, although you can leave those with attractive seeds-heads if they’ve not been made tatty by the wind – grasses can be particularly effective for a few more weeks, especially if they get frosted, and seedheads can attract birds. Lawns may still need occasional mowing; keep them clear of fallen leaves and rake out worm-casts. You can also lightly trim hedges to keep them tidy, but don't overdo it otherwise you'll be looking at bare patches all winter.

e c n a r a e l C l a n i F Event MASSIVE BARGAINS ON EQUESTRIAN WEAR AND LEISUREWEAR Various sizes available while stocks last

Sow over-wintering vegetables – cabbages, broad beans and peas are just some that will grow much faster in spring if they’ve had the chance to develop roots beforehand. Outside containers should be insulated before it gets consistently cold, by wrapping in bubble-wrap. Do this when it’s mild and not frosty, otherwise you’ll just seal in the frost. Continue to check any bare soil for germinating weeds and deal with them; it's normally easier to get out all of a dandelion root out if the soil is wet. Digging over vegetable patches can be quite pleasant if the weather is good, with the possible added bonus of a robin watching to see if you turn up any worms. But try to avoid walking on wet soil, as this will compact it, then you'll need to dig it again.

If the birds have left you any holly berries which you want for Christmas decorations, protect them with fleece or a loosely fixed bag.

If you have birdfeeders, keep them topped up (and provide fresh water as well); encouraging foraging birds, especially tits, will help deal with over-wintering pests and their eggs, as well as being great fun to watch.

Mostly the colder months are about planning for next year, looking at catalogues and ordering seeds. No-one can predict what the weather will be like next week, let alone next year, so you'll have to assume it will be a normal summer – if only we knew what that was any more. Transition Chesterfield Potato Day The twelfth annual Transition Chesterfield Potato Day will take place on Saturday 25th January 2020 at The Pavements Shopping Centre in the town centre. To get the best prices consider making an online pre-order before 3rd December 2019 for your seed potatoes, onion and shallot sets, garlic bulbs, pea and bean seeds etc. see our website: www.potatoday.org.uk or text 07834 838076 with your name and address for the 2020 leaflet and order form.
