urbannature

How can urban public space be combined with a productive, self-sustaining, naturalized edge to create a new meaning of NATURE IN THE CITY?

questions

> How to mediate the transition from urban to natural? > How to provide flexible and interesting public space both on land and water? > How to create a robust public space that can be adapted to different contexts? > How to activate interest and interaction with urban nature?

goals

> provide a more naturalized edge to restore diversity and support the stability of the lake ecology. > soften the transition between the constructed and natural edge through planting and materials > give a place to stay on the lakes to establish them as a good urban space as well as a natural, recreational path. > develop a context-sensitive design sequence that can be applied to different sections of the lakes over time to create a better urban nature.

program

productive urban nature “In principle, the city dweller--a permanent hostage to 100 per cent predetermined use of space--craves these sorts of undefined spaces that have no specified function but are nevertheless useful because they are accessible.” Geuze 2011: 25

It is not my intent to add program to the city lakes. I suggest where public space could be developed to make the lakes more successful as an urban space, but do not program specific functions. The ‘general function’ guiding my design is that the edges must be able to support a freshwater ecosystem and a vibrant urban life at the same time.

method

context-responsive The city lakes connect all the inner neighborhoods of Copenhagen together--they are a wayfinding device and a presence in the daily routines of many people. Each lake has its own character, based from its own development and the neighborhood around it. A single design solution for all the lakes would destroy the character of the lakes by ignoring the unique experience from place to place as one moves through the city. A careful study of the scale, materials, and use of each side will lead to design that builds upon what is already good and adds a new layer to the character of the site.
