CONTEXT
CONTEXT
The city lakes as a recreation area. View Over Lake Sortedam Christen Købke, 1838
The city lakes were used as a promenade and meeting place long before the paths were formalized. Følg med. Fra Dosseringen i København Laurids Andersen Ring, 1884
CONTEXT
The current paths and slopes of the city lakes were implemented by city architect Poul Helsøe in 1929
CONTEXT
Constructed edges on the top three basins of the city lakes

CONTEXT HISTORICAL USE
CURRENT USE
CONTEXT
Long edges, relatively steep slopes, and no where to stay.
CONTEXT
The water edge could be a habitat for wildlife, but it is homogeneous and unproductive.

1. ANTI SOCIAL SEATING

AIM + PRECEDENTS
AIM > PROVIDE A MORE NATURALIZED EDGE to restore diversity and support the stability of the lake ecology Public Spaces in Perello - Manuel Ruisanchez
> GIVE A PLACE TO STAY on the lakes to establish the edges as both good urban space and as recreational paths through the city > ENHANCE THE EXISTING ACTIVITY rather than add new program > DEVELOP A CONTEXT SENSITIVE DESIGN that maintains and refines the characteristic qualities of the lakes to create a better urban nature
Cala Calafato Footpaths - Manuel Ruisanchez

urban planning ‘planned’ ‘unplanned’
‘unplanned’ DOES NOT MEAN disordered OR disfunctional... ...IT IS SAID TO BE emergent.

complex
contrived order
natural order
THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ‘planned’ AND ‘unplanned’ IS THE SCALE AT WHICH THEY ARE DESIGNED, THAT IS, THE SCALE AT WHICH systematic order PRESIDES
order without a plan. the INTERACTIONS of INDIVIDUAL ELEMENTS may themselves be UNCOORDINATED or CHAOTIC, but the OVERALL PATTERNS are RECURRING and FAMILIAR.
natural order complex local, incremental micro scale “unplanned
patterns in complexity The COMPLEXITY found in cities comes from the INTERACTION AND RELATIONSHIPS between the DIFFERENT PARTS at DIFFERENT SCALES, OVER TIME.
nature is interconnected Nature is composed of COMPLEX, INTERRELATED webs of relationships called ‘ECOSYSTEMS’
ecosystem THE ORDER OF THE WHOLE arises from INTERACTIONS BETWEEN THE PARTS. eco + “oikos” + “house” +
system “systema” “interacting components”
second nature “In the urban context, greenery attempts to fill an intuitive void--the absense of nature.
“It is possible to reintroduce a performative ‘second nature’ in which ecological relations, water management, and microclimate become part of the engineering of the city.”
“‘Second Nature’ refers to a designed nature in adjacency to existing urbanization, capable of absorbing future growth while maintaining ecological systems.”

NATURALIZED EDGES > Constructed Littoral Zones
NATURALIZED EDGES > Constructed Littoral Zones
“Frogs, toads and the occasionally odd shorebirds passing through all prefer SHALLOW AND WARM WATER. Therefore southwards slopes of zero to 50cm of water (depth) over up to five meters – also called SLOPES 1:10 – ARE MUCH PREFERRED BY THE NATURAL INHABITANTS OF LAKES. The bottom can vary from coarse gravel to fine clay. In one or two years wetland plants and submerged plants will inhabit parts of the shallow waters...” Jan Pedersen, M. Sc.Biology Danish Nature Conservation Society
NATURALIZED EDGES > Existing Habitat Restoration
“...One of the really big problems of these lakes is the LACK OF A NATURAL OR AT LEAST SEMI-NATURAL LITTORAL ZONE... We did experiments on this and based on the results, a few low-water habitats were constructed.
Of course, the total area of habitat created is just a ‘drop in the ocean’ compared to a natural lake, and MUCH MORE WOULD BE A GREAT IMPROVEMENT FOR PIKE AND FOR THE LAKE ECOSYSTEM IN GENERAL. With the amount (of habitat) available now we are not convinced that a viable fish population will be able to exist in the long run.” Christian Skov and Søren Berg, Department of Inland Fisheries, Institute of Aquatic Resources Technical University of Denmark
