About the Area Foundation San Antonio Area Foundation Published 2.1.2020

History

The San Antonio Area Foundation has served the community for over half a century. Established in 1964 by Richard Goldsmith, the Area Foundation has grown to become one of the top 20 community foundations in the country based on asset size.

Mission

The main mission of the Area Foundation is to help charitable givers make meaningful gifts to improve lives for generations to come. This is done through the more than 500 donor funds established specifically to help meet the needs of nonprofits.

About the Area Foundation

The San Antonio Area Foundation was founded in 1964 as the region’s only community foundation, to inspire philanthropic giving. The Area Foundation oversees more than 500 charitable funds from individuals, businesses and families, approaching $1 billion in assets. In 2018, over $54 million was invested to address our community’s greatest needs and improve lives. The Area Foundation is where giving and community connect, creating a city where we are stronger together.

Training

The Area Foundation serves the nonprofit community by offering valuable classes and training programs in leadership, board governance, financial management, administration, and more. Last year alone, more than 2,000 nonprofit staff and leaders received training at the Area Foundation from more than 70 course offerings.

Our Programs HOLT Values-Based Leadership™ Fellows Program made possible with the generous support of HOLT CAT

This is a premier, one-of-a-kind leadership program for 501(c)(3) CEOs with less than five years tenure and/or senior management nonprofit leaders poised for executive leadership. The nine-month cohort program, sponsored by HOLT CAT, includes leadership development, nonprofit management training and mentorship guidance. This program offers new CEOs and senior management nonprofit leaders: y Values-Based Leadership™ training led by HOLT Development Services, Inc. Our Programs Supervisory and Management Certificate

in partnership with the H-E-B School of Business and Administration at the University of the Incarnate Word

Supervisory and Management Certificate Spring 2020

The Supervisory and Management Certificate program is a five-month series geared toward mid-level and/or first-time nonprofit managers. Through management and leadership competencies, interactive discussion and learning activities, this 30-hour program is designed to equip staff with the skills needed to successfully lead a team of people. Students must follow the program’s pre-selected courses. All classes are held at Area Foundation offices, and led by the University of the Incarnate Word faculty. Our Programs Nonprofit Management Certificate

in partnership with the School of Business and Leadership at the Our Lady of the Lake University The program is designed to encourage deeper comprehensive learning, preparing nonprofit professionals to take on leadership roles through the following tracks: y General Nonprofit Management y Fundraising y Leadership Development Each track is built around seven core nonprofit competencies: Each individual certificate track requires 36 hours of study.
