We are San Antonio’s community foundation. We exist to make our community a better place to live.

There’s never been a time in the history of our country where a college degree was more imperative for success. Almost 40 percent of working-aged Americans now hold a college degree, according to a report from the Lumina Foundation. College graduates, ages 25-34, earned nearly $17,000 more on average than non-college graduates in 2012, according to the National Center for Education Statistics.
Research supports that obtaining a college degree leads to higher income, shifts in generational poverty, which then leads to better benefits and increased career satisfaction. That means, when you fund a scholarship, you are directly helping students obtain a college degree, and are indirectly addressing the poverty and income inequities facing our community. Every student’s story is different, but the financial gap in paying for college is still apparent. By providing sufficient scholarship assistance, we can enable greater success in college, provide backing for deserving students who want to graduate with their degree and give back to society. The support that students receive from their own community instills a greater sense of belonging — and motivation — to make it through their higher education. On pages 4 and 5, you will meet two scholarship recipients who represent the vitality and drive of the college students you are helping. Valentina Fernandez and Jared Pauletti are furthering their education through internships this summer. They both credit the scholarships they received as the catalyst for realizing their potential and embarking on the limitless opportunities for a brighter future. Thank you all for being the change agents we need in this community. Sincerely, Becca

ANNUAL IMPACT LUNCHEON Smiles, hugs, and handshakes permeated the room as more than 200 donors and volunteers gathered to celebrate legacy at the San Antonio Area Foundation’s 2018 Annual Impact Luncheon on Feb. 28. Inspiring A Legacy was the theme of this year’s event at the Witte Museum’s Mays Family Center. The luncheon’s salute to charitable giving included many stories, but it was the heartfelt remarks from guest speaker Clay Richmond that captured the true spirit of the event. “I thank my parents for setting the bar of caring for others at a level that my brothers and I will continuously be reaching for,” Richmond said to a captivated audience. The Richmonds’ story is intriguing. Jack and Laura Richmond and their three boys left a 50-acre farm in Topeka, Kansas., in the 1960s to take a gamble on a “then unknown concept we now know as Pizza Hut,” Richmond said. The Richmonds moved to San Antonio in 1968 where they had one restaurant that grew to several Pizza Hut locations in San Antonio. Their charitable giving started in Kansas but flourished in the Alamo City with various fundraising activities including a matching program for United Way. Since then the Richmonds have created multiple matching challenge grant opportunities and other donations and foundations that have raised millions
of dollars to serve the most vulnerable in our community. There was barely a dry eye in the house when Clay, the youngest Richmond son, said, “I have come to realize I am no longer the baby. The foundations are the babies and we are to take care of them — the stated goal is that they should last 100 years after we are gone, to thrive in order to invigorate and support the angels among us.” Other highlights of the event included a moving video about the Area Foundation’s history that began thanks to the love of a brother and a son. Richard Goldsmith created the Area Foundation in 1964 at the request of his uncle Mannie Goldsmith. The purpose was to create a legacy in honor of Richard’s father, Nat Goldsmith, who made charitable giving his mission in life. Also included in the video was the charitable journeys of Harvey Najim and the Richmond family. There were also heartfelt comments by Theo Guidry, Area Foundation Board Vice Chair and Rebecca Brune, Area Foundation President and COO. Donor Drew Cauthorn shared an inspirational prayer of gratitude. After the lunch, attendees enjoyed an exclusive sneak preview of the Witte Museum’s exhibit, “Confluence and Culture: 300 Years of San Antonio History.” The exhibit and the tour were made possible by the generosity of the John L. Santikos Charitable Foundation.

SCHOLARSHIP
VALENTINA FERNANDEZ “No goal is too big, so be confident and believe in yourself.” That’s the personal mantra of Valentina Fernandez, and by all accounts, she lives up to every word. The Rapier Educational Foundation scholarship recipient has many accomplishments including serving as a student trustee with American University’s Board of Trustees. She was an intern with the District of Columbia Public Schools and the U.S. Senate, and co-developed a 60-hour civics curriculum for middle school students. This summer she will attend Carnegie Mellon University as a Public Policy and International Affairs Fellow. Valentina, a junior at American University, says the Rapier Educational Foundation scholarship through the Area Foundation afforded her the opportunity to attend college. That opportunity in turn led to work in politics and policy to create equitable education policy reforms that reduce barriers to access in higher education. “As a low-income student, I recognize that being comfortable with the bare minimum is not enough. I wanted to put my knowledge into action and have hands-on experience about what a potential job would entail,” she said.
In 2017 students received a total of $3.2 MILLION in scholarships.

RECIPIENTS Leaving a legacy also means establishing a foundation to promote success for the next generation. In 2017, Area Foundation donors provided 659 scholarships to 596 students pursuing higher education, many of whom were the first in their families to attend college. Donors have created a total of 82 funds to ensure bright, encouraging students like Valentina and Jared have the financial backing they need to prepare for future success. Your contributions make the difference!
JARED PAULETTI NASA called and Jared Pauletti answered. The Texas A&M University freshman will spend his summer as an intern at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. The Rapier Educational Foundation scholarship recipient says he hopes to one day combine his passion for computers, flight, and cybersecurity to develop and contribute to cutting edge space technology. NASA is the first step. “I am immensely thankful for being selected to receive the scholarship, which is helping me pursue an engineering degree at one of the nation’s top engineering schools,” he said. Without the assistance, Jared says he would not have been able to devote the time needed to secure the coveted internship. Jared will work at the Independent Verification and Validation facility in West Virginia and will apply cybersecurity protocols to satellites. In addition to his passion for cybersecurity and space, Pauletti has also helped with Eagle Scout projects and other service activities, is a self-taught computer programmer, and is currently attempting to build a 3D printer.

THE BIG GIVE
The numbers are in and the impact was great. Big Give 2018 raised more than $5 million for 613 nonprofit organizations in South Texas! March 22 was the online day of giving co-hosted by the San Antonio Nonprofit Council and the San Antonio Area Foundation. The day began with excitement as Area Foundation staff, donors, board members, supporters and the media boarded the Big Give bus, donated by the Lion and Rose owner Allan Tharp. The crew traveled to several nonprofit fundraising events to support staffers as they sought to raise needed funding for their programs and operations. Whether it’s $10 or $10,000, every bit helps these vital nonprofits serve their clients.
Here are words of thanks from a few of those nonprofits: “ADL wants to extend a BIG THANKS to all of our supporters from the Big Give this year. With YOUR help, we raised $35,644! – Animal Defense League of Texas “On behalf of the Chrysalis Ministries’ staff, chaplains, and Board of Directors, we would like to thank all of our donors for their support during this year’s The Big Give SA. Because of this compassion and generosity, we were able to raise $3,090 to support our mission. We could not have achieved this without you!” – Chrysalis Ministries “Through the generosity of our surrounding community, our PTO parents collected $1,187 for the Big Give. The PTO is excited to present this donation to the students and staff.” – The Foundation School of Autism “The GRAND TOTAL of donations raised during the Big Give 2018 is in! Thank you for your contributions and for helping us work toward ending the cycle of poverty in the Texas Hill Country. A total of $46,835 was raised.” – Hill Country Daily Bread Ministries

CONGRATULATIONS! Two members of the Area Foundation family were recently honored as inductees in the San Antonio Women’s Hall of Fame. Area Foundation President and COO Rebecca (Becca) Brune joined a class of 16 women honored on March 24 for their contributions in agriculture and ranching, athletics, business and finance, civic leadership, communications, creative arts, higher education, K-12 education, health professions, innovation, law, military, public service, science, technology and volunteerism. Brune received the award for her work in the health professions sector prior to joining the Area Foundation. “I am honored to receive this recognition, but what made the night truly special for me was sharing it with my mom (Jill Parker),” said Brune. Parker is a previous Hall of Famer who received the honor in 2006 for her work in science and technology. This marked the first time a mother-daughter duo has been inducted. Also inducted was Priscilla Hill-Ardoin, a former Area Foundation Board member and current donor. Hill-Ardoin was honored for her work in business and finance as a former AT&T executive. Congratulations Becca and Priscilla for not only being inducted into the Hall of Fame but for everything you do to make our community a better place for so many.

“What’s kept me passionate is having a dream or desire that’s bigger than myself. When I say something bigger and greater than myself, I look around and I see the social issues and the economic and social injustice in our community — and the drive to want to make that better and to fix that and to be a part of the solution has really inspired and kept me passionate.” — Rebecca D. Brune, president and COO of the San Antonio Area Foundation
