In addition to planning the re-use for the whole area the assignment was to design the renovation of a building with the most historical value. This was a team work of seven students who were divided again into two groups. My group focused on the historical building. The overall plan is presented on this first spread and on the following spread the redesign of the historical building. The guidelines set by the city on Jyväskylä in terms of residential-, commercial- and office volume and a new logistic system guided the planning significantly. To fit all the required functions it was necessary to plan two new housing areas on site to complement the old buildings. The area was turned into a healthier, more vibrant and bicycle friendly neighbourhood. Winter 2012 Lahti Institute of Design, University of Applied Sciences

In the first floor there are the lobby and the hotel restaurant/cafe, in the second floor there are hotel rooms, conference space and a spa area and lastly in the third floor there are suites and an organic wine bar. The hotel is attached to a shopping centre with multifunctional purposes. The centre was planned to be the heart of the new area with an organic image. The COMMUNITY DESIGN brief was to increase wellbeing in a suburb in Lahti by using emerging design methods

This design process started by exploring the suburb of Tonttila and getting to know its residents. The leading idea of the course was co-design - designing with all the stakeholders. Throughout the course we worked in groups and as much as possible with the residents. Therefore, our group organized four workshops. The agenda of the first two workshops was to get to know the area and the people, find out their problems and needs as well as recruit members to our team, Tonttila tiimi. In addition to challenges, we found a lot of opportunities in the area. In the beginning of our research it became clear that the area was lacking organized activities. In the last two workshops we concentrated on designing within our team and developing our concept Kipin채. Autumn 2012 level MA, Aalto Arts, Aalto University SubLifestyles module, 365wellbeing

cv kaupungin kangas kipinä 2/2 chair design counter construction exhibiting kitchen designs croquis sauna triip solmu kajaste rusko garage landscape planning passive house We chose to use the existing resources to realize our concept. There were plenty of inefficiently used spaces in the area as well as local actives and entrepreneurs. We created a physical platform Kipinä that provides space for organizing and taking part in activities. An empty space in the heart of the suburb became the home base of Kipinä but we mapped all the other unused spaces in the area to make them accessible as well. An online platform was created to support the physical one. SubLifestyles-module has ended but the project Kipinä is still ongoing. I and my colleague are recruiting people to take charge in implementing Kipinä in Tonttila and the latest meeting was held in Tonttila 13.2.-13. There were members of the local community as well as decision makers from the city of Lahti attending. Autumn 2012 level MA, Aalto Arts, Aalto University SubLifestyles module, 365wellbeing

This designing process started by exploring architecture and finding inspiration there. I started taking an interest in buildings that had fascinating declinations and angles. Also triangle shapes inspired me. The course included technical drawing, building a scale model 1:1 and 3D- modeling. Mentioned steps are presented in the pictures on this spread. On top, I worked together with a carpentry student that built a finished model of my design. It was on display at the annual furniture, interior decoration and design fair, Habitare2011 in Helsinki.

The FURNITURE DESIGN brief was to design a counter of a cafe or restaurant This course taught me a lot of designing and building fixtures. I learned about the suitable materials and constructions that are durable enough in public space. To apply the knowledge I designed a counter that is modular and therefore suitable for different spaces and purposes. The shape as well as the materials on the surface support the idea of flexibility because they are easily transformed.

Have a peek inside and see the kitchen of your dreams. The SPATIAL DESIGN brief was to create a new, interesting

way to present kitchen designs.

There were two German companies as clients - Alno manufacturing kitchens and Altec being a professional in exhibiting kitchens. In pairs we were supposed to come up with four unseen ways to exhibit kitchens. In the end the idea showcased on this spread was chosen and presented to the companies. The design got an honorable mention.

PRESENTATING A KITCHEN

In every box there is a different kind of miniature kitchen that the visitor is able to find when peaking through a hole on a side of the box. The design was based on two key principles. First, the human urge to peak through a key hole or such and second, the possibility to showcase a maximum amount of designs in a minimum amount of space. The presentations technique works at a fair, in a show room as well as on the street – anywhere. Spring/Summer 2012 Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences At the trade fair, in a showroom...

The INTERIOR ARCHITECTURAL brief was to design a sauna to a family of four. In addition to the traditional functions of a bathroom, a shower and a sauna, the need of a toilet and a dressing room was taken in consideration. All of the functions were well placed inside 16 square meters. To ensure the serene feel in the space the lighting was carefully thought and realized by indirect lighting and the natural glow of the fire coming from the fireplace in the sauna. Even though the colour scheme in the bathroom is white the atmosphere remains warm because of the creamy tones and the texture of natural stones. The beautifully patterned wooden texture spreads from the sauna to the bathroom on the walls.

To brighten up the everyday of residents of the area we brought some evergreen elements and lighting to the urban context. Solmu is a modular seet that contains a small greenhouse. The seet feels physically warm. In addition to the warmth and the green appearance the energy is wisely used to locally produce green vegetables. Solmu was a result of working together with a colleague Riikka Manninen and is on display at http://www.flickr. com/photos/helsinginenergia/sets/72157632632919296/ . The COMPETITION brief was to design an outdoor toilet with a modern touch Kajaste was created as a result of taking part to a competition together with three co-students. Kajaste was qualified for the second round of the competition with four other designs and was on display in its natural size at the furniture, interior decoration and design fair, Habitare2011’ in Helsinki. All of the materials were provided by sponsors. At the phase of implementation my role was to get intouch with the possible sponsors and financiers. Find pictures of the making process and the design fair on the next spread.

At the early stage of the designing process we chose willow as a leading material. We wanted to invent a new way of using this multifunctional, fast renewable and beautiful material. Kajaste outdoor toilets main structure consists of metal framing and glass walls that have almost a clinical appearance as such. The glass structure is surrounded by a layer of weaved willow- Together they create an interesting duo. The weaved willow filters the sunlight creating constantly changing lights and shadows inside the outhouse. At night the LED-lighting inside makes Kajaste glow soft light to its surroundings. The outhouse, Kajaste, presented on the previous spread was located after the fair in the garden of a seaside Villa in Pyht채채, Finland. The client and owner of the Villa needed a garage that would fit perfectly on the site with Kajaste and other existing buildings. In addition to the need to store a car and a motor boat in the garage there was an urgent need for storage space for firewood. Therefore we designed an attached shed behind the actual garage. The building was designed and the presented material produced within 72 hours. The garage is to be built in the near future.

cv kaupungin kangas kipin채 chair design counter construction exhibiting kitchen designs croquis sauna triip solmu kajaste rusko garage landscape planning passive house The LANDSCAPE PLANNING brief was to transform an open and therefore unused outdoor space into a more private garden. This work resembles my interest in landscape planning. The site is in Stuttgart, Germany and belongs to a student housing organization Studentenwerk. The garden of three tall residential buildings is located between two railways and a parking lot of a supermarket. For its lack of privacy and loudness the site is not used at all. I focused on making the space more private by fencing it and creating spots for the residents to hang out in peace. These functions are combined in the element system I designed for the site. The element structure starts from the fencing continuing throughout the yard as pavement. A special challenge of this project was the lack of visualisation programs and the schetches were made by traditional methods. Spring/Summer 2012 Stuttgart University of Applied Sciences

The ARCHITECTURAL brief was to design an energy efficient house as a group of four. This course was about learning the principles of building energy efficiently and putting that learned information in use by planning a passive house in detail. The location, the shape of the site and the city plan made it challenging to fulfil all the standards of a passive house. The house was named Harakoto (eng. Crow house) Spring 2011 Lahti Institute of Design, University of Applied Sciences

When designing a passive house the alignment of the plot determine the shape of the house as well as the functions of the rooms significantly. The planning process included determining the constructions of the whole house with detailed technical drawings and defining the surface materials inside and outside the house with 3D modellings. Lastly we gave a presentation to argue in favour of our solutions, both constructional and visual. Harakoto was on display at Finnish Housing Fair 2011 in Kokkola.
