SAARAH MKANSI AND SARAH KALIVANDA STUDIO CAPE TOWN - BRUSSELS
Jan-June 2023
Zennepark, located in the heart of the Canal North-East neighborhood, is set to be revitalized as a vibrant hub for community engagement and cultural celebration. The project aims to transform the park into a safe and inviting space that connects with the neighborhood, promoting unity and growth. The plan includes repurposing existing industrial buildings into versatile spaces, such as a wood workshop and an urban garden, to add cultural vibrancy and foster artistic expression. The goal is to create an inclusive and dynamic environment that honors the neighborhood’s diverse cultural heritage and enhances the overall quality of life for residents. Together, this revitalization will breathe new life into Zennepark, creating a thriving community space for a brighter future.

SPATIAL ORGANISATION + CIRCULATION SPATIAL ORGANISATION AND CIRCULATION
On the first floor of the building, an urban garden filled with horticultural wonders awaits, nestled gracefully alongside a charming cafe and a cozy seating alcove. This horticulture area serves as a multifaceted space, far more than just a provider of nourishment. While it does supply fresh and wholesome food, it also serves as an educational hub, imparting knowledge about sustainable gardening practices to the community.
ZENNE-PARK THE GREEN HUB
Moreover, the horticulture area takes on a greater role as a giver back to the community, creating job opportunities for the locals. This offers a chance for individuals to be a part of nurturing and cultivating the earth’s bounty, fostering a sense of belonging and pride within the community. The products harvested within this flourishing urban garden find their way to multiple destinations. Some are delivered fresh, straight to local markets, while others are lovingly prepared and thoughtfully distributed to various locations. These fresh and wholesome products also become a vital ingredient within the cafes that grace the building, enhancing the culinary experience with their natural goodness. In essence, the first floor horticulture area blossoms into more than just a garden. It emerges as an educational center, a source of employment, and a provider of nourishment to both the body and the soul. With every harvested bounty, it continues to enrich the lives of the community it serves, offering a living testament to the power of cultivating the earth and cultivating community connections.

KYLEMORE COMM-UNITY CENTER PROJECT BRIEF
The focus is on architectural heritage
PROJECT TYPE
Community Center
SITE LOCATION
Kylemore, Cape Town
PROJECT DESCRIPTION The project focuses on the development of an architectural concept for a community center in Kylemore, a residential area created for residents who relocated from the neighboring village of Pniel. The primary aim is to synthesize contextual and programmatic information to establish a starting point for the design process. The project is part of a larger research endeavor, emphasizing architectural heritage and intangible heritage. The goal is to address community aspirations in the design proposal, particularly through a sketch presentation. Kylemore lacks a defined town center but hosts several churches, community organizations, and home-based entrepreneurial activities. The proposed site for the community center is at the town’s north-eastern corner, intending to leverage the boundary between the town and the nearby nature/recreation area for communal activities. The intention is for the building to harmonize with the historical built context, emphasizing its social function while reinforcing the community’s social fabric.

PROJECT BRIEF
To design a new front and back facade for an existing 3-storey concrete-framed structure
PROJECT TYPE
Facade Studies
SITE LOCATION
CBD at 33 Waterkant street Cape Town
06
PROJECT DESCRIPTION Through exploration of the existing structure and context, precedent studies and different curtain wall typologies, I tasked to design a curtain wall facade that responds to the various factors at play, including the programme and the climatic conditions.
05 04 03
02
The inclusion of protruding screening systems are allowed, but any projections from the front and back facade are limited to 1000mm. The existing structure, including the upstand beams, are to remain unaltered. Materiality had to be taken into account.
