Such a strongly characterized intervention of town planning, together with sustainable architecture, will enable the involved operators (inhabitants, the public administration, property developers and architects) to cooperate in a wide-ranging operation of urban marketing, stimulating interest at both a national and international level.

URBAN LIVING ROOMS is principally meant to point out a strategic approach to the indicated subject, able to read the specific environmental conditions and economic dynamics, but at the same time the project wishes to prime a wide range of cultural, social and economic processes. The project was guided by environmental sustainability criteria, architectural sensitivity and multi-functional uses of the site, able to favour social exchanges and a tuneful relationship with nature.

In URBAN LIVING ROOMS the relationship between architecture and landscape is placed at the very centre of the project. As a matter of fact, we reckon that the problem to solve is not exclusively a problem of town planning over an extensive area, but of landscape designing of the territory where natural and artificial elements will merge together, as commensurable matters, to originate a recognizable sign. That new landscape generates a strong identity from the intervention and the place in question, so as to become the very landmark of the territory.

More than that, the borde of contact between natural and artificial elements is exploited to the ful so as to reach the maximum of visual pleasure As if it would reproduce the uncertainty of its subject matter, the project seeks to create spaces with a well-defined identity, but without an description, preferring to trace a condition of expectation and suspen sion for a town still evolving

THE CHILDHOOD UNIT

URBAN DECENTRALISATION AND ARCHITECTURE FOR CHILDHOOD

The main research topics identified the guidelines of thesis degree and led to the development of a concept and various project proposals. The research topics are the following: School & Architecture School & City School & Pedagogy School & Sustainability School&Architecture The research line School & Architecture analyze the evolution of school architecture typologies in the history. We create this timeline to propose a comparative interpretation of the developement of the scholastic building. In this scheme the main themes are organized and syntethized the evolutive lines of school architecture. The school building arise was with „One room scheme“ with movable partitions. After came the „Barracks school“ charatcterized by improved hygientical problems and the introduction of the corridor element. Then after different trial we arrived to the model of „Open Air School“ were the open air playground occupied a very important role. Afetr all these typologies with Montessori arised the pedagocigal unit.

The second topic School&City has allowed to the development of a theorical-scientific model to verify the condition of school system in Italy comparing a concentrated model positioned outside the city limits and a diffused model of the schools within the city limits. This comparison has demonstrated the convenience of the second model specifically in the case of the childhood school. The third research line cariied out the dialog between School and Pedagogy. We studied the developement of the different pedagogical schools of thought and the hypotesis of a codification and traslation of pedagogogy in phisical and architectural spaces. It is also important the collaboration with REGGIO CHILDREN : international association for the research and promotion about childhood school.

Reggio Children in the last year is collaborating with designers and architect in researches and design with an integrated aproach. The last line of research - School&Sustainability starts from the analysis of the internation systems of school certification ( like School Leed and others) and school system pianifications. The actual certification method consider only the building: we consider it a mistake because we understood in our research that we don‘t have to evaluate the single school building but the entire system-net of schools of the city. Another theme that we analyzed was the „metadesign“ thath was the better way to syntethize the different line of research we carried out first in a concept scheme and after in a physical project solution.

The theoretical research has become a practical action model: the design concept. The aim of the thesis research is to demonstrate the possibility of design school micro-centres that can occupy the vacant spaces of the city, currently without function and identity. The basic structural cell is a wood prefabricated box. It is composed by a layering of wood X-LAM panels and it’s characterized by a short time of construction, an high design quality and a good indoor comfort.

PARK OF PARKS

MASTERPLAN IN DOSSON (TV - IT) PARK OF SCHOOLS

The Park of parks is an academic project :it is a school centre diffused in a green area that wants to involve all the characteristics of the local landscape, from the urban gardens to the vegetable gardens, till the lacustrine gardens. Inside this gardens the schools are designed to create an „open air“ school system that is is tucked away among the nature and the local landscape.

The schools design was charactwerid by a strong integrated aproach between technology, ecoefficiency and fuctionality of indoor and open-air spaces. All the devices of lightening and heating are studied to maximize the passive feature of the buildings. All these devices have been studied and designed analyzing solar incidence and the needed indoor lightenig level. For the indoor ventilation we studied a recuperating-heat system from the renewal air system.

NEW ALTOBELLO CAMPUS

URBAN RIGENERATION OF ALTOBELLO AREA (MESTRE-VENICE) (IT)

This project is placed in an suburban residential area of the city of Mestre (Venice) characterized by high building density. This high-desity housing area superimpose on an industrial old pole of which resist a few elements (marked in red in the plan bottom left). In our project we start from the hypotesis to to move some didactical structures of CĂ Foscari University in an area near from Altobello. The aim of our project is to create a system of open spaces able to rigenerate and renew the neighborhoo and to restore the buildings of hystorical memory. After that we plan to convert these building in new student‘s dwellings and to create around them the new Altobello Campus.

The first step was the analysis of the existent hystorical bulidings with the mappings of the materials and degradation of the facades and structural schemes. After we considered different kind of intervention considering builing structures criticality, the hystorical stratigraphy and the problem‘s sources. The project set in coherence with the „Contratto di Quartiere“ of Altobello and develops a system of open spaces that aim to reconnect the neighborhood urban-net improving services and the feasibility for the citizens. This green system reconnect the great park planned to be created in the south area of the city in a disused industrial area. The new campus‘s heart will be the renewed hystorical buildings . They will be the new student‘s dwellings and will be improved with additional volumes in the external courtyard in which wil be collocated the atéliers and common spaces.

The most important element of the project is a device intended to be a solution for the stabilization of the roof, to improve the lightening and the venilation of indoor spaces and to create a recognizable character of the New Campus. This device is a small courtyard with a steel structure covered with PMMA polymethylmethacrylate panels. This element is necessary also to a reconfiguration of indoor spaces with the function of little courtyard to improve the internal lightening level and the ventilation.

Also the external volumes are made of a steel structure, concrete blocks and PMMA panels. The facades design is made of particular combination of the different layers of PMMA translucent panels that generates different light textures dependign on the moment of the day. Also the internal PMMA courtyard became a characteristic and evident sign of the Altobello campus renewal. The light pattern that they create in the courtyard improve the internal comfort and became a sort of indoor garden.

MONDELLO TURISTIC CENTRE

NEW TURISTIC COMPLEX IN MONDELLO (PALERMO) (IT)

The project is developed on a strategic the center of Mondelllo, tourist location near the city of Palermo. We started with the analysis of the viability and after the study of urban voids and their relationship with the built environment. From this analysis we understood that the city is characterized by the sedimentation of two types of urban design: the first is the urban net of the historic town of Arabic origin with high density blocks characterized by the presence of interior patios, while the other type of urban net is that of the „villini Liberty“ of the early twentieth century characterized by low density.

In parallel to the design activity we carried out a careful analysis of local climate data (Palermo), paying particular attention to the identification of the prevailing winds to maximize the exploitation of natural ventilation. The obvious critical issues was identified during the summer and given the large amount of absorbed solar radiation is also analyzed and studied the shading of structures by simulation software such as Ecotect.

The project therefore aims to connect existing public spaces and recreational ones with the new tourist center. On the ground floor consists of a large slab pierced by several patios and a residential area on the upper floors with a swimming pool, sun terrace and some „belvedere“. All these structures are held together by a large wall (the one underlined in red) that incorporates both the structural function than that of the wall equipped with the installations. In the south the plate leaves space space for gardens with a slight slope, evoking the idea of the coast, and the wall „folds“ on itself to give rise to a small belvedere-tower which establishes a ‚interesting dialogue with the old trap that is located in the immediate vicinity.
