in 2013 to $4.22 billion in 2017. One of the most encouraging factors that has led to this growth is that purchasing works online is attracting a signicant audience of new buyers. 45% of purchases made from brick and mortar galleries were made through their websites by buyers who had had no previous relationship with the gallery. This new audience is also increasingly comfortable purchasing works from purely online galleries such as Saatchi Art. This positive shift in comfort levels with purchasing art online suggests that online galleries are nding new ways to combine a personal experience with technology to improve levels of condence and trust in buyers. Saatchi Art’s Art Advisory service oers clients the opportunity to work closely with a curator who will give guidance about works to purchase, while at the same time leveraging Saatchi

Instagram is now an essential channel for people to discover art from all over the world, providing a way for people to increase their knowledge of artists, as well as giving galleries direct access to over 1 billion global consumers. In Saatchi Art’s annual Invest In Art report we oer an overview of the online art market and give guidance about investing in emerging art. We introduce recent graduates from the best art schools in the US and UK, spotlight artists who are on the rise and garnering international acclaim, and celebrate the successes of artists who we have introduced to collectors in previous editions of this report.

New Findings CUSTOMER LOYALT Y In terms of number of buyers, fewer people bought art online in 2017 compared with 2016. However, sales increased by 12%, and the online art market is on track to hit $8.37 billion by 2023. Active online buyers have displayed an increase in condence in online platforms: purchases are up signicantly, as is the average price of works sold online. 74% of online buyers purchased more than one work in the last 12 months (up from 65%) and 25% of

90%

of online buyers anticipated buying the same amount or more art online in the upcoming year.

38% of online art sales platforms are thinking of integrating blockchain technology in the future.

online sales were works in excess of $5,000, up from 21% in 2016. Big spenders have increased their online purchases and visits, with 38% visiting art sales websites several times per week, up from 31% in 2017. Small spenders have also become more active in the online market, viewing it as an entry point to the art world. Only 58% of those with small budgets bought from physical spaces before buying online, in stark contrast to the 100% of big spenders purchasing from a physical space rst.

BLOCKCHAIN AND CRYP TOCURRENCY Blockchain and cryptocurrency, such as Bitcoin, are becoming increasingly prevalent in the nancial markets. Blockchain has already begun to inuence the global nancial system and it has the potential to impact the online art market. One of the challenges of the online art market is that buyers want price transparency and quality assurance. Blockchain could potentially aid in resolving these issues, acting as a decentralized registry that is inherently safe as the data cannot be altered. Prices, valuations, condition, and shipping reports could be added to the registry, making pricing more accurate and transparent while assuring quality.

SOCIAL MED IA

Our Top 10s on Instagram

Social media has become an inuential force in the art market. With nearly 1 billion active users, Instagram is the dominant social media platform for the art world. Its image-centric design makes it perfectly suited for displaying art, and its extensive user base can be reached by galleries and potentially converted to buyers. The huge benets of Instagram for the art world, compared to similar apps that were created specically for buying and selling art, lies in the fact that it was not created for the
art world and can therefore be used to reach new buyers. 79% of buyers under the age of 35 use Instagram as a means of nding new artists, and 43% say that discovering art on social media inuences what they decide to buy. While museums have the largest followings, art fairs and online galleries have seen the most growth in Instagram following, corresponding with the growth in online art sales. According to Hiscox, Saatchi Art saw a 72% increase in following, making it one of the top four fastest growing Instagram accounts in the art world for the second consecutive year. Social media remains the most eective way to reach potential online buyers, according to Hiscox, with 52% of new buyers discovering online sales websites through social media platforms.

Why Invest in Art? INDEX: 01. Invest In Art Class of 2018 02. International Artists on the Rise 03. Invest In Art Alumni

To help collectors navigate the emerging art world, Saatchi Art publishes an annual Invest In Art report. For each edition Saatchi Art Chief Curator Rebecca Wilson introduces outstanding recent graduates from the world’s top art schools, highlights a selection of artists at the next stage in their careers who are attracting international acclaim and recognition, and follows the successes of artists who we have introduced in previous editions of this report. Since launching our rst in report in 2013, our aim has been to promote promising emerging artists whose artworks show strong potential to increase in value, and to oer collectors the chance to be among the rst to discover exceptionally talented emerging artists. While there are never guarantees when it comes to investing in art—collectors should always buy what they love rst and foremost—many of the artists carefully chosen for our Invest In Art series have gone on to enjoy signicant success with the value of their artworks more than doubling.
