COLOR FIELD A B S T R A C T PA I N T I N G S

From the drips of Jackson Pollock to the color field paintings of Mark Rothko, abstract art gives artists the freedom to express themselves through color, form and texture.

Christian Hetzel adds the finishing touches to Blue Grey White in his studio in Germany

Christian Hetzel

3

Acrylic on canvas 39.4 x 78.7 in

ESSLINGEN, GERMANY

$11,500

Christian Hetzel’s minimalist paintings reflect his “less is more” approach to life. Inspired by the monochrome paintings of Robert Ryman and by Rothko’s profound exploration of color, Hetzel works with composition, color and texture to create paintings that are the antithesis to the image overload of the 21st century. His abstract works, with their timeless quality, are rooted in an awareness of the natural world and in particular a deep desire to capture a sense of light through paint. Each of Christian’s paintings is an invitation to the viewer to become part of what he describes as “a perpetual challenge to create something new”. Christian’s paintings are in many private collections in the US, UK, Germany, Italy, France, Singapore, Taiwan, Russia, and Switzerland. You can also see his work in the Chanel boutique in Frankfurt, Germany, as part of a selection made by Peter Marino, architect to Andy Warhol, Yves Saint Laurent and luxury boutiques all over the world.

Paintings and photographs of people are among the most popular works of art, with their strong references to the real world and their exploration of how we perceive ourselves in it.

Kelly Puissegur works on one of her detailed, narrative paintings in her Los Angeles studio

13

Kelly Puissegur

14

Champs in 82’ but Sadly They Never Won Again Acrylic, ink, gouache and watercolor on wood 24 x 36 in $900

LOS ANGELES , CALIFORN IA

When she was in art school Kelly Puissegur made “serious” abstract sculptures and paintings that she thought her professors would like. It took a while after finishing college for her to feel comfortable enough to start making works that expressed who she was – and they couldn’t be more different. Figurative, narrative and hilarious, her paintings with their quirky depictions of people and animals are inspired by movies, music, books and snippets of conversation that she overhears in everyday life.

Acrylic, ink, gouache and watercolor on wood 30 x 24 in $900 15. Four Cats

15

Acrylic, ink and gouache on wood 30 x 24 in $1,200

Kelly works in a variety of mediums – pencil, ink, marker, tape, watercolor, and acrylic paint – sometimes working from sketches, other times diving straight in with nothing planned. Her wonderfully playful works are much in demand, rarely remaining for sale for long.

“Characterized by bright colors and playful figures, these witty paintings make the perfect conversation piece.”

You can read more about Kelly’s work and take a peek inside her studio on Canvas, Saatchi Art’s magazine.

MAKING FACES

Stephanie Vovas re-creates a 1970s Californian glow on a photo shoot in Los Angeles

CO N TEM PO R ARY PO RTR A I TURE

From Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa to Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring, some of the most iconic artworks of all time are portraits. Contemporary artists continue this captivating tradition, pushing the genre in new and exciting directions.

12

27

Stephanie Vovas

“Stephanie’s photographs are evocative of a glamorous 1970s California culture. I am enamored by her goldenhued portraits featuring women with big hair and smoldering eyes.”

28

LOS ANGELES , CALIFORN IA

Stephanie Vovas’ favorite thing is taking pictures of people. Heavily influenced by 1970s culture, her heroes include Helmut Newton and Andy Warhol, both well known for their portraits. Transformation, glamour, and uncertainty are themes she explores in her photographs, which she approaches as if she were making a movie. Period locations, the California light, interior design and clothes all come into play in Bardot-esque portraits of her muse Diora Baird. Stephanie recently shot a 10-page feature for Playboy – “a dream job” – and has won numerous awards, including American Photography 29, 31, Prix de la Photographie Paris, the International Photography Awards, and PDN’s Faces. Her photographs are held in many private collections and have been exhibited in several solo and group shows.

Hormazd Narielwalla transforms an old tailoring pattern into a vibrant collage

COLOR BLOCKING M I D - CEN TURY M O D ERN WO RKS

Organic forms, clean lines, and subtle colors are characteristics of mid-century architecture and design. From Mad Men to Charles and Ray Eames, the power of this aesthetic can still be felt among today’s artists and designers.

18

46

Hormazd Narielwalla

“Hormazd’s works evoke in me two of my great passions: Matisse and mid-century design. He’s an alchemist turning tailoring patterns into beautiful artworks.”

LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM

Growing up in India, Hormazd Narielwalla was from an early age drawn to the world of fashion, buying back issues of fashion magazines for a rupee each. This passion and meeting a Savile Row tailor led him to start working with bespoke tailoring patterns, transforming them into geometric collages. He has also worked with 1970s luxury lingerie patterns, British Raj uniforms, and Winston Churchill’s own suit patterns. Hormazd’s abstract collages have been receiving critical and commercial acclaim ever since his debut solo show with Paul Smith in London in 2009. In 2015 he had his first museum show at the Museum of Fashion in Bath, UK. He has exhibited in London, Melbourne, Stockholm, Athens, New York and New Delhi, and his works are in numerous private and public collections, including the Courtauld Institute and the British Library, London.

ABSORBING THE WORLD L ANDSCAPES AND SE ASCAPES

The natural world has for centuries been a source of inspiration for artists, from Turner’s atmospheric seascapes to Monet’s Impressionist paintings of water lilies and Van Gogh’s famous Starry Night.

Sandy Dooley adds texture and color to her Impressionistic paintings

26

69

Sandy Dooley

70

K E N T, U N I T E D K I N G D O M

Inspired by the English countryside, Sandy Dooley creates “in-the-moment” landscape paintings in an Impressionist style. Whether she is painting on an easel in a field or dripping paint on a canvas on her studio floor, she is driven by a desire to capture the vibrancy and harmonious balance of the natural world around her. Color and texture are key elements in achieving this, as is her seemingly effortless ability to evoke the play of light and shadow on the landscapes she depicts. Sandy studied at Central St Martin’s School of Art in London, and has sold her works to corporate and private collections in the UK, Europe, Australia and the US. She has also made commissions for many clients so if you would like her to paint a landscape that is special to you please contact us at curator@saatchiart.com.

“Sandy balances vibrant colors with texture in her lush landscapes. Inspired by her environment and the passing seasons, her paintings transport me to the Kent countryside.” Jessica McQueen, Assistant Curator
