Makes Art as Activism

“My art addresses subjects related to identity, race, and perception through the use of symbolic imagery, cultural allegory, and social realism. It is my goal to create thought-provoking images that challenge our personal perceptions and generalized thought processes.” Adept at portraying her subjects’ facial expressions and utilizing a bold color palette for dramatic effect, Traci Mims’s portraits are an intriguing combination of realism and expressionism. In her paintings, Traci uses cultural symbols and social realism to provide a narrative of black culture and identity, as well as a commentary on contemporary social and political issues. Born and currently living in Florida, Traci holds a BA in Fine Arts from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, and a MFA in Printmaking from Temple University. Her work has been exhibited internationally, including Barcelona, Florida, Paris, San Francisco, and New Jersey.

“Feeling imprisoned by realism and representation, I decided to change my art practice. Inspired by an exhibition about Dansaekhwa (Korean minimalism), I simplified the shapes, lines, and colors in my drawings. In my series, The Outre Mers, lines and strokes dominate the page, and negative space is explored in each composition.” Self-taught painter Félix Hemme combines subtle yet consistent lines with soft colors to create wonderfully active and whimsical figures. Utilizing the contrast between the colors in the foreground with those in the background, Félix effortlessly creates movement and depth, transporting viewers to a parallel and mysterious reality. Based in Brittany, France, Félix has an educational and professional background in design. His work has been frequently included in galleries and art fairs across France.

Mamie Young is a filmmaker turned contemporary artist living and working in Los Angeles. Her work explores the pop culture icon of the “inflatable wind dancer” and its hidden cultural meaning in modern society. “Despite drawing inspiration from my local landscape, I don’t focus on capturing a particular place or time. My work is more centered on the idea of a landscape. I try not to inform the viewer of a specific place, but rather present them with a new experience, one that is both real and imagined.” Nordic painter Jeanette Lafontine’s abstract and imagined landscapes exist in a world between familiarity and fiction. Jeanette begins her creative process by sketching a series of real or imagined landscapes on paper. Once complete, she transfers these ideas and drawings onto the canvas, where she then allows the material and physical qualities of paint and pastel to inform the final composition.
