Three cheers for the red, white, & blue and sweet summertime! Happy Independence Day and Happy Summer Saathee family! As we roll into the heat of the next couple months, this recipe is sure to be a hit! Lassi is a yogurt-based beverage that originated in Punjab and can be served both sweet and savory. One of the most popular ways to enjoy it is with mango, or you can simply season it with spices such as cumin & salt. Lassi is also known to have loads of health benefits due to the
Yogurt or homemade dahi used to make the drink. Yogurt is of course packed with calcium which improves bone health and strength, as well as probiotics which aid in overall gut health. It can also help with digestion and prevent issues such as bloating! So, you’re not only getting a delicious and refreshing drink this summer, you’re promoting the healthy lifestyle that we all strive for! This recipe takes only 10 minutes to prepare, and I’ll walk you through 3 different versions! For more easy recipes and How-To Videos visit www.saathee.com/taige.
Serves: 3 people Prep Time: 10 mins By: Taige Shukla Special thanks to Charu (Amma) ShuklaIngredients Directions
2 cups Yogurt or Dahi 1 ripe Mango (puréed) 1 cup blueberries 1 cup strawberries 2-3 tsp sugar ¼ tsp ground cumin ¾ cup water Salt
Sweet (Red White and Blue) Lassi: Start with 6 tbsp of yogurt and mix in about ¼ cup of water. Using a blender or wooden hand churner, blend until smooth. If too watery add in more yogurt, if too thick add in more water. Blend in 2-3 tsp of sugar, feel free to adjust the amount of sugar based on how sweet you like your lassi! Once the lassi is ready, top with your favorite fruit and enjoy! Since it’s July I decided to be festive and go with a red, white & blue theme by using strawberries and blueberries. The tartness from the berries are the perfect combination with the creamy, sweet lassi. Mango Lassi: Start by cutting and puréeing a ripe mango. In a cup add 4 tbsp of yogurt and almost ¼ cup of water, again adjust the amount of water and yogurt according to how thick you’d like it. Blend until smooth. Now mix in your mango purée until well combined. Typically mango will add the perfect amount of sweetness to the lassi, however if your mango doesn’t do the trick feel free to add in sugar to taste! Mango lassi is my absolute favorite and I love serving it alongside desi dishes that may have an extra kick of spice. Savory Lassi: Start with 6 tbsp of yogurt and mix in about ¼ cup of water. Blend until smooth and adjust yogurt & water according to how thick you want the lassi to be. Mix in ¼ tsp cumin, a pinch of salt and a pinch of sugar. Adjust the level of salt according to taste preference and blend until combined. For savory lassis you can also choose to add in cilantro and ground pepper for some extra flavor!
